OUR LADIES ISSUE

CELEBRATING LOCAL FEMALE FOUNDERS, BUSINESS LEADERS, AND PHILANTHROPISTS

MOVING FORWARD WITH FORTITUDE MAY 2025

Celebrating Female Fortitude

There’s something truly special about taking a moment to recognize the women in our lives who make the world more vibrant and beautiful. Whether it's our mothers, daughters, friends, or colleagues, these women are often the silent forces that shape our days and make life richer.

With Mother’s Day this month, our thoughts naturally turn to all those incredible women—biological mothers and mother figures alike—who have made an unforgettable impact on us. It’s the teachers, the friends, the neighbors, and the family members who offer their love, wisdom, and support in countless ways.

This month, as we celebrate these remarkable women, I also want to encourage you to support local businesses owned by women in our community. One of my favorite parts of this job is connecting with and championing the incredible women here in our Paradise Coast. From movers and shakers to makers and builders, these women bring so much to the table, both seen and unseen. Their contributions, often behind the scenes, create beauty and impact that cannot be replicated.

In this issue, we are featuring local female founders, business and non-profit leads, as well as philanthropists, who make this community what it is.  We celebrate their successes, and the fortitude it takes to make it happen!

Take a moment this month to recognize the women in your life. Send a text, make a phone call, or arrange a video call with the women who have made a difference for you. It’s a simple but powerful way to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they’re loved.

Here’s to celebrating the women who make life so much more meaningful. Happy Mother’s Day and cheers to the ladies who inspire us every day (like my mother seen here with me - thank you, Mom!)!

Rebecca Maddox: Accomplished Entrepreneur

Rebecca Maddox
ARTICLE BY JENN WIDEBERG | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA BLOOM

Q. REBECCA, DID YOU ALWAYS SEE YOURSELF AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

A. No!  I spent 20+ years in Corporate America in Finance and Accounting roles in NYC and Philadelphia.  A manager I once had did used to tell me that I was the only entrepreneur in the company at that time, though, as I was always thinking of new ideas and solutions outside of often bureaucratic, corporate red tape!

Q. SO, HOW DID ALL OF THESE GREAT ENTREPRENEURIAL EFFORTS OF YOURS COME ABOUT THEN?

A. I retired in 2006 and then the meltdown of 2008 happened.  My father advised my brothers and I that if we were smart, we would begin buying real estate in Naples.  We took his advice and starting buying, renovating, and flipping homes.  I then came across the opportunity to buy the property that Three60 Market sat on.  The initial plan was to buy and flip that property, but instead I saw a fit for a cafe there, built it in 2010, and opened it in 2012.  Over time, it became a fan favorite in the Bayshore area.  The Botanical Gardens would often send patrons there for lunch following visits to theirs.  It became a notable in an up and coming area.

Once the Botanical Gardens decided to open a restaurant inside their property, I knew I had to address that immediately.  This gave me the idea for Three60 Wines, that would be sold from the Market initially.  We positioned it on 2 main aspects: 1) we wanted to give people the opportunity to try wines they hadn't before, and 2) we wanted to provide our customers with great value.  We did this via supply relationships and pricing strategy whereby we only marked up our wines $3.60.  When we could provide people with these things, even more so than a Total Wine or ABC, we knew we were giving people something to talk about.

From there, I had the opportunity presented to buy land across the canal.  Given the land size limitations, and in wanting to provide our community with something completely different at the time, I ideated our food truck and bar destination: Celebration Park.  I had never even been to a food truck park in my life, but I wanted to provide customers with something that wasn't vanilla or the same old in these parts, where they could experience different flavors and cuisines, live music, and in a fun and casual environment.

This laid the framework for then wanting to provide a more upscale F&B option across the street.  Rebecca's on the front side of the street is a wine and food bar (which now carries Three60 Wines!) open to the public, and The Maddox is our private members club accessible around the back side.

Q. TELL US ABOUT THE PRIVATE MEMBERS CONCEPT.  MANY HAVE FOLLOWED YOU IN THIS APPROACH SINCE.

A. We have many opportunities for golf & tennis clubs here in our area.  Not everyone enjoys those sports, but they do want the socialization elements.  Most people in our club enjoy cooking classes, wine tasting, fine dining, live music, educational sessions, theatre, etc.  We try to bring these elements to them and have fun in an upscale, yet relaxing, environment.

Q. WITH ALL OF THESE BUSINESSES, DO YOU FIND ANY TIME TO RELAX?

A. I actually enjoy the challenge of it all and working 80 hours per week to make it happen.  However, my very supportive spouse and I also enjoy traveling immensely.  We will be taking some time soon to explore Bordeaux, Scandinavia, and Argentina later this year - we can't wait!

Rebecca's 'The Maddox' is a welcoming space for all

REYU is a movement for those who want to stay healthy and beautiful, by restoring their bodies’ natural connections.

Our bodies are constantly self-repaired by 3 central organs; the brain, the heart, and the intestines. They feed, repair, and regulate all our peripheral cells and organs through blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic ducts, which run back and forth in loops - we call them the bio-feedback loops. The youthful state of both internal and external peripheral organs is dependent on the integrity of their bio-feedback loops to these 3 central organs. As we age, these loops degenerate. The impaired connection between the central organs and ALL our cells is creating both beauty and health issues. That’s why beauty and health are correlated - both are a reflection of young and functional biofeedback loops. True rejuvenation starts with the biofeedback loops. REYU is a technology designed to achieve the restoration of these loops in a sustainable and 100% natural way.

Q. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THE NON-PROFIT SPACE, AND WHY THE SHELTER, SPECIFICALLY?

A. After buying a home and spending the first few years discovering Naples and enjoying all that it has to offer, I felt the need to give back to this special community. I met the lovely wife of a man that was in my golf and tennis groups, and asked her how she likes to spend her free time since we never saw her at our sporting activities. She told me that she devoted much of her time to a nonprofit called The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. She invited me to a new member event to learn more, I jumped at the opportunity.

There, we had the opportunity to learn from CEO Linda Oberhaus about all of the different committees of the Shelter Guild (the volunteer arm). I also had someone close to me who was at that time in an abusive relationship, so that drew me in even more. I could not understand why she "just did not leave". I came to learn that it actually takes an average of 7 times for a person going back and forth to finally have the courage, strength, knowledge and empowerment to leave their abuser.

Giving Back to Our Community

Q. WHAT MAKES THE SHELTER UNIQUE AND NECESSARY FOR OUR COMMUNITY?

The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that The Shelter takes pets. It has been found that many people will not leave their abuser because they are afraid that their pet will be harmed. We have had people from all over the country visit our shelters (in both Naples and lmmokalee) and often hear that there is not another one like it.

Our shelters offer everything a person can possibly need to help get their life back on track from clinical counseling, court and legal advocacy, financial training, help finding a place to live after they leave The Shelter, and so much more. Domestic Violence doesn't only affect one socio-economic group. We receive calls from Port Royal to Marco Island to lmmokalee and everything in between. DV can be anything from physical to emotional to financial abuse.

We also have our Human Trafficking Program in Immokalee.  Our wonderful advocates and counselors are very well trained in all areas and everything is completely confidential.

Q. TELL US ABOUT YOUR DIFFERENT ROLES AT THE SHELTER - FROM BEING NAMED VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR IN THE PAST TO TRUSTEE AND NOW BEING SELECTED TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

A. I am so proud to have served as President of The Shelter Guild where I had the opportunity to lead well over one hundred dedicated volunteers who participated in raising money and awareness, serving on committees that held children's and Mother's Day parties, and decorating the shelter on holidays as well as transitional living cottages. CONTINUED >

My biggest honor to date was being one of 7 recipients in 36 years to receive an award called the Beau Venturi Peace Award given to individuals who have shaped the face and direction of The Shelter for Abused Women and Children.

Q. WHAT IS CRITICAL IN MANAGING A HIGHPERFORMING NON-PROFIT?

A. First, is the mantra that our CEO created: 'Happy, Healthy and Whole'. This trickles down to every advocate, volunteer and participant. Next, is a clear mission and vision. Our mission is to lead and collaborate with the community to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence and human trafficking. Our vision is a community free from domestic violence and human trafficking.

Q. WHAT IS AN ASK YOU HAVE FROM OUR COMMUNITY TO FURTHER SUPPORT THE SHELTER?

A. The Shelter has a resale store, Options, where ALL net proceeds support The Shelter's life-transforming programs and services. My ask would be to shop and donate there to support our efforts.

Q. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS?

A. My passion for The Shelter's mission shows itself in every encounter I have on a daily basis. Because of this, I have had countless people ask how they can help and engage. I am also proud of the many relationships I've nurtured with some Shelter participants even after they've graduated from our transitional living program. Seeing them now own homes and progress in personal and professional life is incredibly rewarding.

Rachel Keller: Thriving Business Owner

WHO TRANSITIONED HER CAREER FROM POLITICS TO PROFESSIONAL HIGH-END SERVICES

Q. What inspired you to start your business?

A. With over 25 years of experience catering to high-net-worth individuals, I saw an opportunity to create a luxury wine storage facility that goes beyond basic storage—one that offers a white-glove experience, personalized service, and a true sense of connection for wine collectors. That vision led to the launch of Carl’s Wine Vault in early 2020.

Q. Did you always see yourself as an entrepreneur / business owner?

A. Not at first! My career started in the political sector, where I developed skills in high-end service and logistics. Over time, I realized I had a strong entrepreneurial drive and a passion for creating tailored experiences for clients. The transition to business ownership felt like a natural progression.

Q. What was the biggest turning point in your career?

A. The moment I decided to leave politics and fully commit to building a business centered around something I love—fine wine and exceptional service—was a defining shift. It was a leap of faith, but one that aligned perfectly with my skills and interests.

Best advice you've received?  "Surround yourself with people who make you better, both personally and professionally. And, of course, always call your mom."

Q. What challenges have you faced and overcome as a female entrepreneur?

A. Breaking into a male-dominated industry like wine and storage required resilience. I overcame this by proving my expertise, surrounding myself with a strong team, and staying laser-focused on offering a level of service that sets us apart.

Q. What makes your brand or business unique in the market?

A. Unlike traditional storage facilities, we provide a sophisticated, full-service experience. From climate-controlled storage to white-glove transport and inventory management, we offer a level of care that serious collectors and businesses can’t find elsewhere. Focusing on personalized service rather than just storage, and understanding each client’s collection and needs, we’ve been able to build strong, long-term relationships that drive business growth.

Q. How do you balance entrepreneurship with personal life?

A. It’s all about surrounding yourself with a reliable team. I’ve learned that delegation is key—when you trust the people around you, you can step away when needed without everything falling apart.

Q. How do you handle stress and burnout?

A. By making time for things that bring me joy— whether it’s the beach, a good glass of wine, or quality time with loved ones. Also, knowing when to say no and set boundaries has been a game-changer.

Q. What role does mentorship or networking play in your success?

A. Learning from others—whether they are industry veterans or fellow entrepreneurs—has provided invaluable insights. Building relationships has opened doors I never expected.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?

A. Trust yourself. You don’t have to have all the answers right away, but if you stay committed to your vision and surround yourself with the right people, you’ll find success.

Hyla Crane: non- profit leader

Champion of the Arts

Q. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THE ARTS AND NON-PROFITS?

A. I had stopped practicing law to stay home and take care of my two daughters. My tennis partner’s husband told me he had a vision of FREE Shakespeare in the park in New Haven, Connecticut. I thought it was a swell idea, but couldn’t understand why he was pitching it to me. As a former lawyer, he was sure I would be able to get the company incorporated and obtain a 501(c)3. Before long, I was the founding Executive Director of the Elm Shakespeare Company which continues to produce outdoor productions, as well as having a stellar education program.  I then held jobs at the prestigious Long Wharf Theatre and The Yale Repertory Theatre.

Q. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER?

A. I was hired by Joanne Woodward when she was the Artistic Director at the Westport Country Playhouse. The playhouse was embarking on a major capital campaign as it prepared for its 75th anniversary.  Joanne pushed me out of my comfort zone and I developed the confidence to better engage with people and speak publicly when needed.

Q. HOW DID YOUR BACKGROUND OR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE INFLUENCE YOU?

A. I had always loved the performing arts. As a child I studied dance, music and spent my summers at Berkshire Showcase and later Stagedoor Manor.  Summers were spent in stock theaters. After college, I believed I needed to find a grown up occupation and off to Law School I went. What else are you going to do with a degree in Philosophy from a liberal arts college? While I only practiced law for a short time, legal training always helped no matter what or where life led me.

Q. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED DURING TOUGH TIMES?

A. People keep me motivated. In my present position, our staff and our Board are just incredible. We have been through hurricanes and the pandemic together. They are so talented and they constantly surprise me with all that they can achieve. On my worst days just talking with my team lifts my spirits and keeps me going. I also try to celebrate the little victories and accomplishments. Finding time to enjoy the good times can really help when you hit some bumps in the road.

Q. WHAT MAKES YOUR NON-PROFIT UNIQUE AND NECESSARY FOR THE COMMUNITY?

A. Marco Island Center for the Arts and the Arts Center Theatre are the ONLY art center and community theater on Marco Island. Arts and culture function as indispensable parts of humans’ lives. The Arts are not just nice – The Arts are necessary. Studies show the impact and value of arts and culture, from individual quality of life to overall community health. The Art Center addresses the needs of its numerous stakeholders in different ways through its various programs and offerings. The Art Center’s unique capacity is to serve as people’s ART HOME on Marco. The Art Center and the Arts Center Theatre promote economic growth for both individuals and the greater economy of the island and beyond.

Q. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING BUSINESS LEADERS IN THE NONPROFIT SPACE?

A. The nonprofit world is very competitive as funding gets tighter. We often don’t collaborate or work together because we are all worrying that someone will go after our donors or we will find ourselves at some disadvantage. Business leaders, and especially women leaders, need to learn to develop trust and find ways to create mutually beneficial opportunities.  Rising tides lift all boats!

Katie Dudley: Beauty & Business Expert

REACHING FOR THE STARS

Q. DID YOU ALWAYS SEE YOURSELF AS A BUSINESS OWNER?

A. Yes, I’ve always had big visions. I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist at an extremely young age. As I got older, it was always in mind that I wanted to own something great, and make my parents proud.

Q. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED DURING TOUGH TIMES?

A. When you own a business, there are always people looking up to you and relying on you. It’s important to hold myself accountable. When I find myself a little less motivated, I will dive into podcasts that touch on business and leadership. I have found it very helpful to have a mentor, as well. Like-minded individuals help keep you motivated!

Q. WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS UNIQUE IN THE MARKET?

A. We are a salon that offers an unmatched atmosphere. We have worked really hard to maintain a very welcoming environment. Our team is close - we all love each other. The biggest compliment we receive is how much our clients enjoy coming to get their hair done because of how inviting the salon is - homey, peaceful, fun. The client experience is so important, so we’ve dedicated our salon culture around our guests. I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish as a team!

Q. WHAT’S THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU’VE MADE FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

A. There are two sides to this - the clients, and then our team. We use high quality products for clients to also take home should they choose. When you have people who trust you with their hair, we make sure to use products that support their desired outcomes while keeping their hair healthy. Beauty Edition doesn't cut any corners when it comes to our salon products and tools. Another great investment has been continuous education as trends change. Gotta be able to nail the inspiration pic! As a business owner, it’s been very important to pour into our team, so that we all can grow and evolve together.

Q. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOURSELF WHEN STARTING OUT?

A. Two things come to me right away! The first, who you hire matters. Make sure that they align with your vision, and culture. Nothing is more important than protecting the work space. Second - slowww and steady wins the race; stay consistent and don’t take on more than you can handle.

Q. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BUSINESS IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?

A. In a larger, stunning location with a waitlist of stylists wanting to work there! I also see myself being a consultant and coach, helping other salons achieve what we’ve been able to at Beauty Edition! My purpose is to spread passion and encourage people to go for their goals.

Q. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING FEMALE BUSINESS OWNERS?

A. Build meaningful relationships with other business owners. Be yourself, and be kind to yourself, but do not lack accountability. Be intentional. It can be very intimidating when you see a big vision for yourself, but you've got to go for it!

“Have a plan, close your eyes…and go for it! I’m a 'reach for the stars' type of person. If you want it bad enough, then it’s so unbelievably obtainable!"

Fun Places for a Ladies' Outings!

Ladies' Get-Together Inspiration

In honor of this month’s Ladies' Issue, we’re going to take a look at the best places to go when you and your female friends want to get together.  Never fear, though dear readers - Mr. Bites is not going to mansplain the best places HE thinks women want to go, but rather, he went right to the source and asked some gal pals to pick their favorite places.

Next month, we’ll dive into where the guys go when it’s their turn to get together.

Until then... Yours in deliciousness, Mr. Bites

MC: “For evening locations, women typically want an inviting ambience that's safe and consistent with good food and cocktails.  That’s why we love Delmar for it's beautiful venue and energy.  Similarly, Vine Room,  for its speakeasy vibe and fun libations.

For daytime Saturday or Sunday Fundays, Bayshore Drive has great options with the likes of brunch at Rebecca's or private members' club The Maddox, while The Med has fun DJ & dancing afternoons."

ES: “My friends and I love the District in the evening for its great cocktail selection and numerous fun spots to take photos.  For a ladies’ brunch, or a special occasion, you can’t beat Sails.  The rainbow mimosa flight at 239 in Mercato is pretty tasty and fun too!  Of course, Gumbo Limbo, beachside at the Ritz, has been a staple for so many for so long.”

MS: “There are a number of spots on Marco that are great for a girl’s get-together.  Tesoro rooftop bar at the JW Marriott arguably offers the best sunset view in our area - coupled with drinks, it makes for a beautiful evening.  For a post-boating casual bite, Dolphin Tiki bar is a relaxing hangout, and their Ahi Tuna Tower is to die for!  For happy / social hour, Oyster Society does one of the best on the island.  CJ’s outdoor bar at The Esplanade offers ladies a quality night out with live music on Thursdays.  For the mornings after, Doreen’s Cup of Joe is the must-go-to spot to shake off the cobwebs!
