Letter from the Publisher
Art de vivre, as seen on the bottle of wine gracing the front cover, means the art of living well in French. Let me tell you, Papillion, we know how to live well!
We published our first issue of Papillion City Lifestyle two years ago, and the longer we have the privilege of bringing this magazine to our Papillion community, the more we realize how amazing this community is! With so many wonderful people, places, and businesses in this town, we could never tell every story that should be told and that is one of the very reasons we are so proud to call Papillion our home.
Speaking of being proud Papillion residents, that reminds us of a time we were in Lincoln for a gathering several years ago. At this particular gathering, everyone introduced themselves and shared where they lived. Of course, we said we lived in Papillion!
After the introductions, a friend approached us with an insight that we still discuss to this day. He observed during the introductions that we were the only ones from the Omaha metro who didn’t just make the blanket statement that we were from Omaha. He mentioned that he has found this to be true on several other occasions as well, not just with us. That’s what it means to be proud of your community, and we love it!
In this issue, we would like to extend our gratitude to you, our readers, and to those who have made and continue to make sacrifices to keep us safe. For this reason, we are sharing stories of military veterans who are now giving so much of their time and energy to helping others, as well as those who work during the holidays to ensure our loved ones are safe and taken care of. We are also offering tips and tricks to help your Thanksgiving be the best one yet! And if you know anyone who may need some additional help this season, please consider nominating them through our Giving Campaign.
Thank you, Papillion, for being great! And thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your life each month.

NO T HOME FORTHEHOLIDAYS
This season is a time to gather, celebrate, and create lasting memories. While many enjoy the holidays with loved ones, others spend this time in service, keeping our communities safe. For them, the holidays may look different, but they’re filled with joy, purpose, and unique traditions. Here, we hear from a few everyday heroes in our community as they share what the season means to them, and we extend our heartfelt thanks for their dedication and sacrifice.
CELEBRATING INDIVIDUALS WHO SACRIFICE THEIR TIME DURING THE HOLIDAYS TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY

WHAT DOES THE ROLE YOU PLAY IN THE COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?
Serving Papillion, La Vista, and the Papillion Rural Fire District is truly an honor. Our community constantly shows appreciation and support, which means more than words can express. We often meet people on their hardest days, so we strive to serve with compassion, professionalism, and integrity. Simple smiles and waves from residents remind us why we do what we do.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, AND NEW YEAR’S WHEN YOU ARE ON THE JOB?
The fire service runs 24/7, even on holidays. While daily duties like equipment checks, chores, and training continue, we do carve out time to relax. Family members often stop by the stations to visit, and we try to share a holiday meal, though many times it’s interrupted or eaten cold due to calls, but we have learned to adapt to these things.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL TRADITIONS SURROUNDING THIS TIME OF YEAR?
Whenever I work a holiday, my family tries to visit me at the station. My wife always makes it a point to get a picture. It’s become a tradition, and it’s been fun watching my kids “grow up” from babies to teenagers through those pictures.
Dominique Lathan
9-1-1 Dispatcher since 2023
WHAT DOES THE ROLE YOU PLAY IN THE COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?
I’ve lived in Nebraska, specifically Sarpy County, most of my life. Growing up in Bellevue and graduating from Bellevue West, it’s rewarding to serve the community I’ve always called home. It feels like a full-circle moment.
WHAT DO YOU DO ON CHRISTMAS, NEW YEAR’S, AND THANKSGIVING TO CELEBRATE WHEN YOU ARE ON THE JOB?
During the holidays, we give back by adopting a Veteran and a nursing home. We also host potlucks, exchange Secret Santa gifts, and invite family to visit. Spending so much time together, coworkers often become a second family.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, AND NEW YEAR’S WHEN YOU ARE ON THE JOB?
I love the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. I enjoy eating, playing games, and spending quality time with my family. I’ve had the same best friends since childhood, and we make time for a Friendsgiving each year.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL TRADITIONS SURROUNDING THIS TIME OF YEAR?
My husband and I are still creating new traditions for our two kids. One that stands out is the last few years we have gone to the Christmas Light show at Werner Park. We always have so much fun!
Carl Consolver
Assistant Executive Director and Director of Nursing at Miles Memory Care since 2022
WHAT DOES THE ROLE YOU PLAY IN THE COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?
I have the pure privilege to care for clients who can no longer care for themselves, offering not just physical support but emotional care to both residents and their families. Listening and being present with them is a vital part of what I do.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, AND NEW YEAR’S WHEN YOU ARE ON THE JOB?
While working through the holidays, we strive to create a traditional holiday feel of family gatherings and festive celebrations through food, the smells of cooking turkey, or music. No matter the occasion, it is important to involve families and join the residents while celebrating the season.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS OUTSIDE OF WORK?
During the holidays, I hold on to traditions passed down through my family tree. I bake Thanksgiving desserts the night before to fill the house with that rich aroma of freshly-baked spice. We decorate the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and transform the outside of our home into a Christmas wonderland for my kids. New Year’s Eve is a time of hope, where we celebrate new beginnings and aim for an even better year ahead.

A VETERAN’S MISSION TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY, HONOR SERVICE, AND BUILD LEGACIES
ARTICLE BY DEB REINARD AND TAMSEN BUTLER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY A2I PHOTOGRAPHY
“I decided I wanted to serve the people I served with.”
Rob Cordray’s path toward his legacy started as a young child, surrounded by patriotic military memorabilia. Both his father and grandfather proudly served in the military, making Rob’s decision to join the military a natural evolution of his family’s heritage.
Now a decorated Army veteran, Rob decided after 30 years of service to pour into the community he loves. “I decided I wanted to serve the people I served with,” he said. Rob took the reins in 2023 as Chapter Captain of Omaha’s chapter of Team Red, White & Blue, a nationwide non-profit that helps veterans lead healthier lives through fitness events designed to improve their physical and emotional wellness.
“Rob transformed our chapter from a dwindling community to a thriving one,” said Tamsen Butler, military veteran and Team RWB member. “Before he came along, the chapter was pretty much gasping for air, but after he took over a couple of years ago, our chapter became one of the fastest growing in the country.”
Rob’s thoughtful leadership was recognized by Team RWB, and in 2024 he accepted the role of Nebraska State Coordinator, a role designated for strong leaders with a true passion for helping veterans.
Team RWB and its mission are personal to Rob.
“During my career, I lost many very close colleagues who succumbed to mental health challenges and PTSD,” he said. “I felt horrible for what they must have been going through, and even more so for their families.”
With that in mind, Rob puts his heart and soul into events that raise awareness and combat the risk factors of mental health issues plaguing veterans. He recently participated in the 50-Mile March, which is a 22-hour ruck from Lincoln to Omaha. Rob said the 50-Mile March was created initially to bring attention to the homeless veterans’ issues, but has now expanded to include mental health issues and other needs endemic to the veteran community.

It is no surprise that Rob’s professional life also revolves around helping others. Much like he has preserved his family’s legacy of military service, Rob helps others preserve their legacies through his services as an Edward Jones financial advisor. He focuses on military members, veterans, first responders, healthcare providers, educators, and other service-oriented vocations.
“I love serving those who serve others,” he said.
Rob said he feels a solemn responsibility when it comes to advising someone regarding their hardearned money.
“It’s come full circle,” he said. “My military career prepared me for the pressure of this vocation, and for the scope of impact my role can have in families’ lives. So, when people ask me how long I’ve been in the industry, and they want to know if they can trust me, I totally understand and respect the questions. I invite them to sit down, and I say, ‘let me tell you my story.’”
“Building a legacy isn’t just about money; it’s about genuine relationships and their impact on those around them.”
Rob’s story resonates with people who serve others because they understand that building a legacy isn’t just about money; it’s about genuine relationships and their impact on those around them. Rob is well-versed in guiding people onto their unique path towards the legacy they want.

Finding the Right Pairing
OF WINE SUGG E S TIONS FOR TH
The right wine can elevate a savory dish, enhance hidden flavors, and create a memorable dining experience. But with so many choices, selecting the perfect bottle can be overwhelming. That’s why we partnered with Wine Cellar 510 to offer a curated list of wine suggestions for Thanksgiving Day, making it easier to find pairings that truly complement your holiday meal.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMMIE RODRIGUEZ
Art De Vivre White Blend by Gerard Bertrand $28
• Origin: Languedoc, France
• Grape: Clairette
• Description: Vibrant straw-yellow color with a slight greenish tint. On the nose and palate, crisp pear, peach, and plum, with a touch of honeysuckle and lemon zest. The texture is fresh and refined with a slightly sweet finish.
• Thanksgiving Pairing: The Art de Vivre Blanc is a crowd-pleaser. It’s light, refreshing, and versatile. Its subtle sweetness and citrus notes pair beautifully with Thanksgiving classics like stuffing and mashed potatoes, as well as with Thanksgiving desserts. Loved by both casual drinkers and wine enthusiasts alike, it’s consistently our best-seller at wine dinners. Easy to sip, yet strong enough for main courses.
Albert Bichot Beaujolais-Villages $20
• Origin: Beaujolais, France
• Grape: Gamay
• Description: On the nose, light floral notes such as violet and peony, with bright red fruits like raspberry and blackcurrant. On the palate, it is fresh and lively with ripe strawberries, black cherries, and a touch of pepper.
• Thanksgiving Pairing: Gamay is similar to Pinot Noir, but with a bolder character. This Beaujolais balances lightness with rich flavor, pleasing both Pinot and Cabernet lovers. Its velvety texture and bright fruit complement Thanksgiving staples like ham and turkey, cutting through savory meats and adding depth and balance to every bite. A true holiday favorite.
Fitch Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon $35
• Origin: Sonoma, California
• Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
• Description: On the nose, notes of red cherry and raspberry. On the palate, bright red berries and succulent black cherries, with a hint of caramel, dark chocolate, coffee, and toasty oak. This wine is smooth-textured and medium-bodied, leaving a lasting impression.
• Thanksgiving Pairing: Cabernet isn’t a typical Thanksgiving wine, but for those who love bold reds, especially with smoked brisket or turkey, it’s perfect. This lighter California Cab pairs beautifully with smoky, rich dishes. Its toasted oak and dark fruit notes add depth without overpowering, making it great for the meal or post-dinner cleanup and regaling old family stories.
Wine Cellar 510
John and Shannen Trefz opened Wine Cellar 510 in 2014. Their daughter-in-law, Arissa Trefz, began bartending at Wine Cellar 510 in 2017, where she developed a love for wine and a talent for helping customers find their perfect match. She took over wine purchasing and management in 2020 and became the owner after her father-in-law’s passing. In 2023, additional owners joined the team. Though not formally trained, Arissa’s hands-on experience and passion for wine allow her to curate a thoughtful, personalized selection for their family-owned store.
H O P E
Begins with YOU A SEASON TO
The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE
“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress
Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.
Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.
Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.
To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.
2 WEEKS BEFORE
Create Your Thanksgiving Menu
• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.
• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.
• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).
• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.
• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.
4-5 DAYS BEFORE
Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries
• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.
• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.
• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.
2-3 DAYS BEFORE
Prep Meals & Set the Table
• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.
• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.
• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.
• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
1 DAY BEFORE
Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks
• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.
• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.
• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.
• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!
• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.
