It’s Time To Give Back... november 2014

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. –John 15:13

publisher & sales director

It’s that time of year again when we start prepping for Thanksgiving. In the spirit of the season, we were inspired by so many people and organizations in our community and I am excited to share some of these with you in this issue. One of those amazing organizations has the energy of North Scottsdale’s own Tom Lehman, who desired to give back to more than just the game of golf. Learn more about his work with Elevate Phoenix to equip urban youth to soar to greater heights. November also brings with it the 55th annual Heart Ball on Saturday, November 22. This year’s Phoenix Heart Ball committee consists of 90 outstanding woman who are business, civic, community and philanthropic leaders in the Valley. Check out more information in our calendar along with some other really great events going on around town this month. I feel so honored to have met those in our community that have dedicated their lives to making a difference in others. It is my honor to introduce to you, if you haven’t already had the pleasure of meeting him, your neighbor Dr. David Tellez. A resident for 28 years, Dr. Tellez had a vision to combine his love for people and his profession in eye care to serve the uninsured and undeserved community. His clinic is equipped with healthcare professionals trained not only to heal, but to share God’s love. Read more of his story in our Your Neighbor section on pg 30.

Introducing the Work of Max Hammond Article Christi Manuelito | Photography Max Hammond

F

rom the time he was four years old Max Hammond was destined to paint, as he began on the walls of his home, a budding muralist. As he ran along the edges of the salt marshes of the Great Salt Lake, he was struck by the inescapable solitude of the vast stretches of this area, from the absolute flatness of the salt flats to the surreal quality of the marshes. It was this desolate landscape he began to paint in college. Earning a B.F.A. at the University of Utah, Hammond was formally trained, emphasizing classical figure drawing in addition to his love for landscapes. After winning a trip to Mexico for six weeks, this rural boy was struck by the way the Mexicans used undiluted colors to bring life to what appeared to be stark living conditions. It was at this point that color began to take on a new life in his paintings. Hammond left Utah to begin a M.F.A. in painting at Arizona State University where he won the prestigious Nathan Cummings award allowing him to travel throughout Latin America, where he was again saturated in a world of color and ancient abstraction. Following his thesis show, he was invited to join the Elaine Horwitch Galleries where he met with instant success. His work 14

is widely collected, and appears in the permanent collections of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Finova Corp., the City of Scottsdale, and the City of Mesa among others. Hammond has had solo shows nearly every year for the past 25 years. His current work occasionally returns to the figures he originally painted where he weaves in and out of abstraction, sometimes almost recognizable, then blurring to pure color, form and texture.

hat do you do to feel good about yourself? Buy a new outfit? Run an extra mile? Give to someone in need? However you boost your self-esteem, having confidence gives us all the fearlessness we need to face the world. Sometimes, such courage can be hard to find, especially for people tormented by hair loss, whose worlds may seem a little less inviting. Take Bryce Cleveland, for instance. At 19 years old, Bryce started balding. “My hair was everything: the Mohawks, blowouts, every color you could think of,” he says. “I was the absolute hair trendsetter. When I started balding, it felt like I was losing a piece of me, almost as if it was a limb. It affected my confidence, the way I approached situations on business, my personal life, and, of course, my love life.” Throwing on a hat was the easiest option, but hats aren’t always appropriate. Creams and sprays were always available, but they were messy and didn’t work. Eventually, Bryce considered a hair transplant, but it was too expensive, and the scars would have been obvious forever. Discouraged and desperate for a solution that would restore his self-worth, Bryce started researching hassle-free ways to achieve the 16

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2014

illusion of a full head of hair. He remembered getting pretty realistic results the time he’d used a Sharpie and wondered if there was a way to get those ink dots under the skin where they couldn’t wear off. He ran the idea by some friends, who happened to be tattoo artists, and it seemed like a hair tattoo could be the answer. After practicing with different needles and techniques, Bryce perfected a process called scalp pigmentation, which permanently implants color into the scalp. The end result is the look of new hair growth where there was none before. Unlike commercial tattooing, scalp pigmentation uses a needle small enough to replicate a thousand follicles per square inch and charcoal-based ink custom mixed to match any hair color and resistant to turning blue over time. Plus, the needle only penetrate skin’s outer layer as opposed to all three layers, preventing ink from spreading into surrounding tissue. If properly maintained, the procedure can last up to 10 years. With the concept fully developed, Bryce began working on buddies who would shave their heads just for the cause. He received such positive feedback that he decided to open his own business, Scalp Aesthetics, in Rochester, New York, where he grew up. “It just felt so good to be able to empathize

with other people,” Bryce says. “To be able to help them like I helped myself was amazing.” Bryce says years passed before the company had built up enough credibility to convince outsiders that the process is legit, but their client list eventually started growing to include even celebrities. George Farah, a pro bodybuilder (and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s conditioning coach), is a client and spokesperson for the brand. Since opening in New York in 2004, Scalp Aesthetics has expanded to 22 locations worldwide, including a facility in Scottsdale. “We really create a community of people, and they feel like they’re a part of it because they were suffering,” Bryce says. “This is a real issue. It’s something men really deal with.” Since Bryce knows that struggle firsthand and believes so strongly in this innovative solution, he is committed to spreading the love. Twice a year, Scalp Aesthetics donates a procedure to someone with cancer or alopecia. “We will start with your head and heal your heart,” he says. “It might seem dramatic, but it’s true. It’s the most rewarding thing ever.” To learn more about Scalp Aesthetics, try virtual scalp pigmentation before committing to a procedure, or schedule a free consultation, call 855. Teen Lifeline

T

een Lifeline started after a movie titled “Surviving” staring Molly Ringwald, aired on prime time network television in 1985. The movie spurred a public discussion on teen suicide. As a result, mental health agencies began to look at the issues raised in the movie and it was discovered that Arizona’s teen suicide rate was double the national average. Arizona ranked second in the nation for the rate of teen suicide. As a result, in 1986, through a grant from the McKesson Foundation, Teen Lifeline began as a program of Southwest Behavioral Health Services training teens from central High School. In 1988, we expanded recruitment and began taking teen volunteers throughout Maricopa County. In 1991, through a grant from the Marshall Fund of Arizona, we created an 800 number to reach teens across Arizona with a life saving hotline. Teen Lifeline is a very grassroots organization relying heavily on teen volunteers. In the early years, before social media and the internet, most of our outreach was conducted in the school and by word of mouth. Many teens learned of the hotline through a friend or family member. Many of the volunteers describe Teen Lifeline as a home away from home. Longevity is part of the legacy at Teen Lifeline. I was fortunate to have been involved with the research and development of Teen Lifeline in the beginning and have had many roles

over my 26-year tenure at Teen Lifeline. In addition, our Clinical Director Nikki Kontz started with the agency 20 years ago as a teen volunteer herself. The average length of stay for a teen volunteer is 3 ½ years. Over the past 28 years, more than 1,700 teens have participated in our life skills training program to become teen peer counselors. Teen Lifeline is growing as an organization. Our hope is to continue to expand our Prevention and Education services to reach all communities across Arizona. In fact, this year we have been able to expand targeted outreach to Prescott and Tucson.

Teen Suicide Hotline: 602.248.TEEN (8336) 18

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2014

What happens here on a daily basis is nothing short of extraordinary. Teens helping teens is what makes Teen Lifeline both unique and incredibly successful. In the next 3 years, we plan on adding texting services and expanding the hotline to teens across the nation. Before we do, we want to make sure we are meeting the needs of Arizona’s youth first. Our three programs continue to grow by more than 10 percent annually. This year we anticipate receiving over 13,000 calls, reach more the 37,000 through our Community Education and Preventions services, and we will train approximately 65 teens to staff the hotline. Our focus is steadfast, reducing teen suicide and education the public on how to help teens in crisis. Our job is to reach teens before they consider suicide as an option and help them find help and hope. Teen Lifeline is a lifesaving resource for Arizona’s youth. The peer counseling hotline itself is the heart of why we exist. We are here to save lives, and when the phone rings we get the chance. Each one is not just a call, but a child reaching out for help. They are looking for a connection. Teen Lifeline provides that connection to hope. Teens by the thousands find hope and help each year through our services. For 28 years our hotline has been a connection of hope for teens in crisis. Some call just needing a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on; others call as a last resort. Whatever the reason, Teen Lifeline and our counselors are here 365 days a year ready to listen and help. The biggest factor that separates Teen Lifeline from other crisis hotlines is the people who answer the phone. We understand that when teens want to talk about their problems, more often than not, they turn to other teens. Teens helping teens is what makes Teen Lifeline both unique and incredibly successful. Our teen Peer Counselors train for months for the chance to help someone. Our volunteers can empathize and understand the problems of the callers because, in many cases, they have or are going through the same things themselves. The Life Skills Development program pro-

vides our Peer Counselors the highest quality training, ongoing development, adult mentorship, peer support and real-world job training. In exchange for their service to other teens, these Peer Counselors learn the value of volunteerism, the importance of responsibility, fundamental communication and life skills. They continue to volunteer because they know they are making a difference. But we are more than just a Hotline. Teen Lifeline is reaching thousands more every year than with our prevention program. Through our Community Education and Outreach program, Teen Lifeline is able to reach over 36,000 people every year. Our presentations not only spread our name and hotline number, but also educate the community on important issues. This program involve diverse teaching methods that focus on increasing awareness and understanding of the problem behaviors, on acquiring or enhancing coping skills, and increasing help seeking behavior. Our prevention programs adhere to best practice standards in suicide prevention. Presentations include education on suicide prevention, bullying, stress, coping and grief. These efforts are provided to middle school and high school aged youth both in and out of a school setting and adults who are involved with youth. Our programs are implemented by staff members who are sensitive, competent, and trained in prevention and intervention methods which adhere to the American Association of Suicidology standards. Over the past 28 years, Teen Lifeline has served over half a million teens and families. Yet, we know there is more work to be done. We live in a world where 60 percent of our teenagers have thought about suicide, 1 in 6 has made a suicide plan and nearly 1 in 10 has attempted suicide. We live in a world where our teens are struggling with peer pressure, bullying, substance abuse, physical abuse, gang violence, and face limited access to the resources they need to deal with those stressors. In 2012, 33 children in Arizona ages 7-17 died by suicide (one child every 11 days). Last year we received over 12,000 calls and the number rises each year. One of every four calls deals with suicide. November 2014 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

orth Scottsdale’ own Tom Lehman has been playing golf professionally for more than 30 years, and is the only golfer in history to have been awarded the Player of the Year honor on all three PGA Tours: the PGA Tour, the Web. com Tour and the Champions Tour. Currently playing on the PGA Senior Tour, Lehman won the Open Championship, one of the PGA’s major titles, in 1996. As active in the community as on the course, he has been the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award, which is presented annually to a professional golfer sharing Stewart’s respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress. Lehman was also honored with the Charles Bartlett Award, given by Golf Writers Association of America for unselfish contributions to golf. But, never one to rest on his laurels, for the past five years, Lehman has been working to elevate even further. And, he isn’t referring to his golf game. “In 2009, I had the great honor to become a founding board member of Elevate Phoenix, a unique and often life-changing program for Arizona youth that provides in-school teaching; after-school mentoring/tutoring; career instruction/ post-secondary preparation; character, life skills and peer leadership development; community service; adventure activities; and reading/literacy improvement within urban public schools,”

says Lehman, who is also actively involved with nonprofits Cortney’s Place, McKenzie Monks Foundation, Hopekids, Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Phoenix Crisis Pregnancy Center, The Changing Lives Center for Women and Children, Search Ministries and Big Oak Ranch. Founded in Denver as Colorado Uplift, the model had worked effectively with urban youth for more than 30 years. In line with Colorado’s success, the Phoenix organization’s primary mission, according to Lehman, is to strengthen character, empower knowledge and elevate relationships, and its success is directly measured by the success of its youth participants. Currently, the organization reports a 98 percent graduation rate and 90 percent post-secondary rate among participating youth in Arizona’s most urban communities. “The heart of our success is the work of our team of full-time, primarily ethnic staff who serve as teachers, mentors, and life coaches to students over multiple years. Teacher mentors are available to students 24/7,” says Lehman. “These one-on-one connections make in-school learning more effective. As a part of this relational approach, Elevate Phoenix standardizes its learning objectives and equips staff to meet the varied learning needs of their students.” Currently, Elevate Phoenix is serving 4,500 local students at a cost of just $222 per student. Several local leaders in education have already stepped up in support of growing the program. “Full-time teacher-mentors working relationally with students is of tremendous benefit to students coming from single-parent families. Elevate Phoenix works with our urban youth to help them graduate, learn life skills, pursue post-secondary education and give back to the community,” says Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Kent P. Scribner. As the nonprofit organization got off the ground, it was funded wholly by contributions from businesses and civic organizations. However, with an eye toward growing the number of children it serves, Lehman and Elevate Phoenix are pleased to announce the launch of its first-ever signature fundraising event, the Weekend Jetaway Culinary Casino Classic, presented by AXA Advisors Southwest. “Weekend Jetaway is the brainchild of north Scottsdale wealth management firm and recent Most Admired Company

honoree AXA Advisors Southwest and partners as both a way to bring its own staff together on a volunteer effort and raise funds for a local nonprofit – we are especially proud the funds will be used toward our local kids,” says Lehman, who has signed on as the event’s official honorary chair. Weekend Jetaway takes place in a private jet hangar within the Scottsdale Airpark on Saturday, November 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. It features live music and both gourmet food and drink from chefs across the Valley including Alliance Beverage, Proof Canteen at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, Talavera at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North , Sassi, SOL Cocina, The Yacht Club, Tom’s Thumb Marketplace, The Melting Pot and many more as well as dancing, a luxurious silent auction and even games – with the winner from the evening taking home an all-inclusive vacation for four on a private jet.

Not My Kid Organization Encourages Good Choices Today for Long-Term Success Tomorrow Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided

K

ids today face challenges that were unimaginable to most parents just a few short years ago. From drug abuse to bullying, to depression, internet safety and suicidal thoughts, the spectrum of choices a child has to make to stay on the path to success is narrow and difficult to navigate alone. Fortunately, Scottsdale’s Not My Kid has recognized this, and has made it their mission to help kids across Arizona make good choices before they fall into trouble. Not My Kid was founded in 1999 by local residents Debbie and Steve Moak, who had watched their own son struggle with the perils of substance abuse after having been an athlete and student leader. Debbie and Steve were able to get their son help and headed back in the right direction, but felt that the knowledge they acquired throughout the process could help others who faced the same sort of issues with their own children. The message of Not My Kid is one of prevention. They want to impact kids early and help them recognize the differences between right and wrong. The hope is that through open dialogue and preparation, kids will develop the courage and confidence to make positive choices in even the most difficult of situations.

“We go out and do presentations for school faculty, for students and for parents,” explains Shane Watson, who is the Communication Coordinator for Not My Kid. “We feel like in order to create change in society we have got to educate all three groups. That is because there is really no stereotypical kid, and every kid that you can imagine is being touched by one or more of the topics we speak on.” Through their interactions Not My Kid focuses on six everyday challenges that are dangers for today’s kids: drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, unhealthy relationships, eating disorders, depression and self injury, and internet safety. When presenting to students, Not My Kid has a core group of about 25 “peer educators.” Because children are more likely to listen to people with whom they can relate, each presenter ranges from about 18-30 years old and can speak about the topic of which they have first-hand experience in overcoming. They are very open about their individual story, which includes a Q&A, and are approachable at the end of their presentations for audience members who would like to voice their private questions or concerns. The presentations geared toward parents and school faculty continued >

members are more commonly done by behavioral health-care professionals or by local law enforcement. Together, theirs is a message attempting to convey the challenges facing kids, as well as information on how to recognize the signs of potential problems hopefully before they occur. In an effort to evaluate the impact of their presentations, Not My Kid has recently hired an outside firm to survey select audiences immediately after attending a presentation as well as follow-ups down the road. They want to know if the work they are doing is really helping kids to make good choices. “We have completed our initial surveys and now have some incredible and measurable results-actual hard data-to show that our programs are working,” says Watson. “Not just right after the fact as far as people learning something or just feeling different about the topic, but that there has been sticking changes to their behavior down the road as far as intent for when they have to approach these topics.” Statistics only tell a small part of the story, however. What really drives the staff and volunteers at Not My Kid, Watson adds, are the stacks of letters that build up in the office and the emails that

clog up the inbox that come weeks, months, and sometimes even years after a presentation that keep them going. “What we hear as far as how this affects people is so encouraging and inspiring. To have kids tell us that because of what they heard through our presentation that it changed their outlook on drugs or whatever it is, that’s always just really awesome to hear.” Additional information on Not My Kid, including their programs, profiles on individual speakers, or how to get involved, can be found on their website at NotMyKid.org.

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale Celebrates 60 Years of Service Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided

T

hroughout this year the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale has been celebrating 60 years of service in the Northeast Valley, all while proving that things really do continue to get better with age. Originally founded in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1860, today over 4,000 autonomous local affiliates make up the Boys and Girls Club of America and can be found in each of the 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and on various military bases throughout the world. The organization arrived in Scottsdale in 1954, finding a temporary home a Loloma Elementary where it served 258 boys in that first year. This year the number

of kids in the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale system is close to eclipsing 18,000. “Over the 60 years that we have been incorporated, we have had to add the term ‘Greater” to our official title,” explains Diane Roberts, who is the senior vice-president of development and marketing for the Scottsdale branch. “The boundaries of Scottsdale have grown so much, as has the entire Valley, and wherever there has been a need in the northeast quadrant of the metro area we have always tried to be there. “But through all the growth our mission has always remained the same: to make sure that kids have a place to go that is positive and safe during those gap hours while school is out and parents are still at work. We try to provide the extra attention that kids need to have the right experiences that will help put them on the right path to becoming our next generation of great leaders for our community.” The official birthday for the club was in January, which was marked by a party at Hartley & Ruth Baker Branch, complete with a cake (actually comprised of sixty sheet cakes) that sprawled seemingly wall-to-wall in the facilities gymnasium. The entire community was invited in to mark the occasion, which also served as a kick-off for a year’s worth of commemoration of the past but also continuing work moving forward. The club also created a unique logo to mark their 60 years of service, which has adorned the t-shirts of employees, kids, continued >

and volunteers throughout the year as they went out into the community. The presence of the logo has helped serve as a reminder of how intertwined the organization has been and remains in the Northeast Valley. There have also been a series of donor breakfasts to help say thank you to anyone and everyone who has made a monetary donation to the club. The 60-year milestone is remarkable, but through the celebrations the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale has remained focused on many more moving forward and continuing to adapt to the ever-changing needs of today’s youth. “We serve an interesting community with not only large areas of growth but also large shifts in growth,” says Roberts. “What we need to continue to do is to be able to respond as quickly as we can every time there is a systemic movement in our service area.” There are over 100 programs offered within the Greater Scottsdale club, which also now maintains nine permanent facilities. As demographics move from area to area, this offers a unique flexibility to implement curriculum that will best serve specific groups of kids as soon as needs becomes apparent. A prime example of this has evolved over the last few years as local districts have almost entirely eliminated the arts from their academic curriculum. Boys and Girls has stepped in and evolved to include programs to supplement and even nursing artistic talent to anyone who shows an interest. They are also trying to focus on developing more advanced math and science programs to help prepare kids for the projected shortage of skilled engineers in tomorrow’s workforce. “We try to be as nimble and flexible as possible to be able to give all kids the services they need where they need them,” says Roberts.

A MISSION OF LOVE North Scottsdale Doctor Inspired To Create The Neighborhood Christian Clinic Article Michelle Guerrero | Photography Provided

r. David Tellez, a North Scottsdale resident of 28 years, was on a mission trip to Argentina with Scottsdale Bible Church, when he had a vision. The vision he had was of a local clinic designed to serve the uninsured and underserved community, equipped with healthcare professionals that were trained not only to heal, but to share God’s love. “Foreign medical trips are great but they are infrequent for most individuals and at great cost in time and money,” says Tellez. “I realized there were significant medical needs here in the Valley, and healthcare providers would be able to continue to care for the poor if there was a local clinic where they could volunteer once or twice a month.” It took a few years to pull all the pieces together, but the clinic finally opened its doors in 1999 thanks to a group of dedicated friends and colleagues, plus seed money from St. Luke’s Charitable Trust, Scottsdale Bible Church and a generous private donor. At the grand cialist at the Phoenix Children’s Hosopening there were seven physicians and only three patients. “It takes people to make these things happen, not just bricks and mortar. Not everyone can be a doctor, not everyone can be a nurse, but they can do God’s work in the inner city and support this,” says Tellez. “It’s very humbling to see how many people come out to support the clinic. It blows me away all the time.” Tellez shared a story about one of the clinic’s patients who was being treated for several complications due to diabetes, and then had a heart attack. Like many of their patients, he was a laborer who worked less than 32 hours a week, therefore had no medical insurance. “He was very gracious and the family came and presented a lunch for the staff and volunteers, and returned a week later with another meal,” says Tellez. “People remember how you made them feel. They really feel God’s love through all the staff.” The Neighborhood Christian Clinic provides full medical and dental care in a beautiful 5,500 square-foot building located on the property of Neighborhood Ministries in downtown Phoenix. They have six medical exam rooms and three dental suites. Patients pay $30 per medical visi,t which includes the exam and medications dispensed from an on-site pharmacy. Labs and x-rays are also provided when needed. The clinic is funded primarily by individual donors, in addition to patient fees and local churches and foundations. Parting Thoughts

A Thankful Heart Words Hona Amer

A

s I gathered things off of my desk, I noticed a folded piece of paper that I had previously overlooked. It had my name on the outside, so curiosity caused me to unfold it. I straightened the wrinkles in the paper with my hand and started reading the cursive writing. I became more surprised the more I read. Someone had taken time to write a handwritten thank you letter to me. The paper wasn’t fancy, but the words were sincere. It took only a small amount of time to write it, but the impact was significant. This simple act of gratitude made me realize how thankful I am for the people in my life. As the holidays approach, it can be easy to experience feelings of discontentment. We can look around and see all the things that we don’t have. We recognize on paper that we should be more grateful for the people, family and opportunities in our lives. Yet, in reality, comparing our lives to others can leave us becoming more and more dissatisfied with our own life. One way we can overcome feelings of discontentment is through gratitude. The object of our attention will receive our affection. If we continually focus on our lack, all we will see is lack. Yet, if we are willing to change our perspective, we can begin to see all the blessings in our lives. I am thankful for the people in my life, but I am not always communicating my gratitude to people in tangible ways. The people who challenge us to be better inspire us. The people who love unconditionally allow us to be genuine. The people whom we call family, whether relatives or not, share a special place in our lives. Of all the things that I could list, I want to be most grateful for the people in my life. 38

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2014

What could we do this month to show gratitude to people? Making a phone call or sending a note in the mail is a good place to start. Maybe you can invite them over for dinner and celebrate their friendship. Sometimes we assume that people know that they are loved and appreciated, but we never actually take time to verbalize it. Instead of overlooking the people, let’s communicate to them that they are appreciated. As we gather around the table this season and remember to be thankful, let’s celebrate the blessings in our lives. Maybe you decide for the month of November that you express your gratitude to a different person in your life each day. One small act of kindness could be just the encouragement they need. As we step into a mindset of thankfulness, may it subdue any jealousy and discontentment that can easily build in our heart. May we continue to count the blessings in our lives, no matter how big or small and respond with a thankful heart. Let’s dust off the thank you notes that have been sitting in our closets too long and start sending some encouragement to someone who needs it. Saying thank you goes a long way. Maybe that person will find the note you send hidden in a desk drawer years from now, and the simple words of encouragement you write today just might have a lifetime of influence.
