STYLE + BEAUTY WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS INCLUSION: THE PLATFORM EMPOWERING DESIGNERS TO BE THEIR AUTHENTIC SELVES

Styling Our Lives: A Celebration of Personal Expression

I wish you a month of creative energy and hope this letter finds you in high spirits.

This month, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to...from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversa tions, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is also deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As I peer into my closet, it appears that I have a ton of clothes that just don’t fit this new chapter of mine. I’m going to do an extreme closet cleanse this month and transition from my stuffy corporate wardrobe to my new, better, creative self.

I have to tell you—I have found such inspiration in my readers, my community and partners. I get so many ideas, whether it’s style-related, everyday life-related or even the people that have come into my circle who are doing AMAZING things. Thank you for all of the kind emails. I love this community and finally feel like I’m doing what I should have been doing a long time ago.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Northwest Columbus to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity and ignite our creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on Earth can duplicate. Here’s to being uniquely you!

ART IS TO LIVE

Beauty AND Wellness

THE PERFECT STYLE DUO WITH PRECISION

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Fall is the perfect time for laser therapy to give you the complexion you've always wanted.

Dr. Christine Salem

You can do a wardrobe makeover any day, but what if you just don’t feel beautiful? While it's great to want to improve ourselves, lasting change lies within our daily habits—things like eating right, exercising daily and getting quality sleep—all lay the foundation of a happy, healthy life. It sounds simple enough. Sometimes, though, we need a little help in getting back to the basics so we can live our most fulfilled lives.

That said, we don't have to wait for a monumental resetting like New Year's Day to become a better version of ourselves. We can start today. Like actress Jane Fonda says, “It’s never too late–never too late to start over, never too late to be happy.”

This especially rings true for those of us who experience a fluctuation in hormones, which can lead to a decrease in energy, feelings of depression, osteoporosis and a multitude of other symptoms that can cause discomfort and health risks. It also rings true for people seeking professional assistance with losing weight (and subsequently, maintaining a healthy weight).

Precision Health & Wellness, a medical grade spa specializing in medical weight loss, hormone optimization and aesthetics, provides a variety of solutions that help men and women reach their weight loss goals, achieve hormonal balance and enhance natural beauty so they can live a happier, healthier, more vibrant life.

Founded in 2022 by Christine Salem, PhD, the med spa, new to Worthington, offers an array of services including GLP-1 medication and nutrition coaching, laser and medical grade skincare, IV hydration and more. “We treat a lot of patients for medical weight loss, thyroid management, polycystic ovarian syndrome, pre-diabetes and hormone replacement for men and women,” Dr. Salem says. “We focus on overall wellness.”

Dr. Salem’s resume reflects her holistic approach to wellness. She is dual-board certified as a family nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, earning a Master’s degree from The Ohio State University and PhD from Mount Carmel College of Nursing. Wanting to help people feel like the best versions of themselves inside and out felt like her true calling. “The way I treat one patient is different from the way I treat another,” Dr. Salem says of her approach.  “We use a lot of evidence-based approaches, but tailored to meet the individual.” Precision Health and Wellness doesn’t stop at helping patients feel better on the inside. They offer regenerative aesthetic treatments to enhance a patient’s individual beauty on the outside as well.

While Dr. Salem specializes in hormone replacement and medical weight loss, her partner, Anne Wood, advanced nurse practitioner and board-certified family nurse practitioner, focuses on aesthetics and weight loss therapy— passionate about helping individuals look and feel their best. If a flawless complexion is what you're after (and who isn't), Wood offers wrinkle relaxers and cutting-edge laser technology that will leave your skin glowing and gorgeous.

Though Precision Health and Wellness offers services to kickstart your journey to a brand new you, Dr. Salem also recommends adopting a healthy lifestyle to increase longevity including getting quality sleep, staying hydrated, incorporating regular exercise and following a healthy diet.

“If you want to live to be 100, the best thing you can do is strength train regularly, eat a lot of protein and get good, quality sleep of at least seven hours a night,” she advises.

CREATING FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY

Revamping your closet can be a game-changer, turning chaos into a stylish sanctuary. In a Grove City golf community, homeowners who regretted their cramped master area since 2013 have achieved just that. Thanks to the expertise of designer Samantha Ferris and her team from J.S. Brown & Co., their closet now boasts a stunning transformation, nearly doubling in size.

Closet Design Secrets from Samantha Ferris of J.S. Brown & Co.
"Identify what's most important for storage and functionality...experts can help you visualize solutions you hadn't considered."

J.S. Brown & Co. is known for creating beautiful, functional spaces, with Samantha leading the team with her extensive background in space planning and interior architecture. "I redecorated my room multiple times as a teenager and always had a passion for design," she recalls. "Learning about space planning and interior architecture hooked me."

What she loves most about the design process is adapting to her clients' needs. "Sometimes your style aligns with your clients, and sometimes their tastes are completely opposite," she explains. The recent Grove City project allowed Samantha to explore new materials and fixtures, creating unique design features that matched her clients' tastes.

FROM CLUTTERED TO CLASSY

The initial closet was a mere 90 square feet, divided into two small spaces off the bathroom. The bedroom itself was lacking any design features that could give it a

"wow" factor. Samantha and her team changed all of that by expanding the closet into a spacious 165 square feet.

"The feature wall behind the bed with bookmatched faux marble panels, cove lighting and modern light fixtures is my favorite part of this project," Samantha shares.

And, this transformation didn't stop at the closet— it included a full dressing room that beautifully opens through double mirrored pocket doors into the expansive master closet.

BLENDING FUNCTIONALITY AND BEAUTY

If you're thinking of starting a closet remodel, Samantha emphasizes that understanding your needs is critical. "Do you have a large shoe collection? How much hanging space will you require? Is an island or drawers important?" she explains.

This tailored approach ensures both functionality and aesthetics are prioritized. For this particular

project, key changes included a vanity space with an LED mirror and floor-to-ceiling wardrobes for "his and hers" areas.

"The mirrored pocket doors reflect the starburst chandelier, making the hall feel open and light," Samantha notes.

TOP CLOSET TIPS

Samantha offers several practical tips for those looking to enhance their own closet spaces:

1. Assess Storage Priorities: "Identify what's most important for storage and functionality," she advises. If adding space isn't possible, you can consider a closet design service for innovative solutions.

2. Maximize Vertical Space: "Place shoes on shelves six inches from the floor, and store folded sweaters on higher shelves," Samantha says. "Using vertical space effectively can greatly enhance storage capacity."

3. Opt for Custom Solutions: "Experts can help you visualize solutions you hadn’t considered," Samantha says, including providing space-saving units tailored to exactly what you're looking for.

If you're inspired by Samantha's insights, fall is a great time to rethink your closet space as that "back to school" feeling of fresh starts and clean slates settles in. Whether you're dreaming of a complete renovation or just a few updates, a specified, tailored approach can transform your closet into an organized, stylish haven.

Fashion Fall

BEST OF LOCAL SHOPPING: LOOKS STYLED BY ASHLEY ALT AND COURTNEY STONE SMITH

From left to right; Alise Ghanem, Delcina Brown, Olivia Minameyer and (front) Courtney Stone Smith

We can argue that personal stylist Courtney Stone Smith can make any outfit look good. But we can also agree that the looks shown here are the epitome of elevated luxury.

Brought to you by Northwest Columbus' most stylish boutiques, we give you a glimpse into each store including missions they stand for and what you can expect when you walk through their doors.

KINS COLLECTIVE (DUBLIN, BRIDGE PARK)

The aesthetic of KINS Collective emulates stylish, affordable luxury. As Courtney says: "It is perfect for fulfilling a classic style with a modern twist."

Shop owner Lindy Nagle describes her store as a "mix of classic and trend," catering to a range of shoppers from young women just starting out in their careers to moms wanting to stay on trend.

"Solid basics and denim are huge trends for fall," Lindy says. This includes the barrel leg shape which the store has in denim, brown and cream—a flattering fit for every body type.

Other trends she's seeing for fall include feminine details (like a button down with lace detailing) as well as tweed or tweed-like fabrics shown on sweaters, skirts and more.

MODEALISE (THE SHOPS AT WORTHINGTON)

"ModeAlise exudes creativity and the high-end street style aesthetic," Courtney says. "It is my go-to spot for unique footwear."

Founded by Alise Ghanem, the clothes, shoes and accessories from this truly unique shop are unparalleled from any other boutique in Columbus.

ModeAlise houses merchandise from Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia and more, catering to all women from petite to plus-size, offering gorgeous garments that make shoppers stand out in the absolute best way.

EVOLVERIE (DOWNTOWN WORTHINGTON)

"Evolverie is the ideal spot for the environmentally conscious fashion consumer," Courtney says. "It is great for sustainable staple items."

Amy Homan is the founder and designer of Evolverie, who launched the brand out of frustration from wasting money on low quality items. In her spacious store, you will find timeless, functional pieces, from dresses and blazers to jumpsuits and pajamas, all ethically hand-made here in Columbus as well as Karachi, Pakistan from unused materials left over from major fashion houses and designers.

"Our main goal is to make you feel good in the clothing," Amy says. "And just as important, make you feel good about the clothing."

BIRCH (DOWNTOWN WORTHINGTON)

Founders and co-owners of Birch, who happen to be sisters-inlaw, Kellie Harrington and Lindsay Harrington, set trends rather than follow them, filling their store with brands not found anywhere else in Columbus, fulfilling an approachable yet functional aesthetic that appeals to women in their twenties all the way up to their seventies.

"Birch is where you'll find fashion-forward styles with a SoCal meets Midwest feel," Courtney says.

"For fall, we’re excited about mixing masculine and feminine," Kellie and Lindsay say. "For example, a clean, baggy denim, a ballet flat and a button down. Accessorize with a statement earring or a hair bow and that’s the perfect easy-going combo that gives your look a style."

Birch customers appreciate the honest and helpful style feedback from store associates, knowing they're embodying a cool, boho-chic look.

Hair & Makeup Trends for Fall

“When people do connect to that confident side of themselves, they radiate.”

Fresh makeup and a new hairstyle have the incredible ability to boost our self-esteem. We all want to look and feel our best—so we left it to the experts to guide us on not only what's trending this season, but how we can be our most confident selves in the process.

614 Beauty makeup artist Delcina Brown shares her insights on the makeup trends we'll be seeing for fall, while sustainable hairstylist Olivia Minameyer gives us her take on the importance of staying true to yourself amidst the flurry of social media and celebrity trends.

MAKEUP

"I've witnessed clients walk in [my studio] feeling a bit shy and uncertain, but after a makeup session, they leave exuding vibrancy and confidence," Delcina says. "The right makeup can enhance natural features, allowing people to see the best version of themselves in the mirror. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling empowered and ready to face whatever comes their way."

That's the true magic of makeup. A swipe of red lipstick or a little eye glitter lifts spirits and builds confidence. This fall, Delcina anticipates a surge in blush application, possibly driven by the influence of musician Sabrina Carpenter.

"Many clients have already begun requesting more blush than usual, seeking that vibrant pop of color on their cheeks for a youthful, radiant glow," she says.

Also, instead of the ultra-dewy complexion (which can make you look a bit like a glazed doughnut), Delcina believes we'll see a shift toward a "satin skin" finish. "This look will still offer a subtle glow, but without the overly dramatic shine," she says. "It's an excellent option for those with oily skin who love the dewy trend but find it often leaves them looking too shiny."

As for lips? Burgundy will remain a fall favorite, as it complements most complexions beautifully. "There's nothing quite like a matte burgundy lip to embody the essence of autumn," Delcina remarks. "To balance the boldness of the blush and burgundy lip, I foresee a trend toward more natural and neutral eye makeup."

The makeup guru also expects the grunge look to make a comeback—something that seems to weave its way back into the fashion and beauty industries quite frequently. "Think back to Chanel’s vamp Collection from 1994, featuring deep red lips paired with dark, smoky eyes," she

says. "This style offers a bold, edgy alternative—perfect for making a striking statement during the fall season."

HAIR

Sustainable hairstylist Olivia Minameyer prepares for the "trendy bursts" that ramp up once the fall season starts by keeping tabs on trendsetters in the industry, but emphasizes that while Instagram and Pinterest are "cool," they aren't realistic when it comes to maintaining a great (and healthy) hairstyle.

"Cities like London, Paris, Milan and New York will always be trendsetting cities as [the fashion and beauty industries] are prevalent there," Olivia says. "But in the Midwest, people tend to stick to more natural hairstyles" that flow with their everyday lives.

Though her clients follow trend to a degree—richer, darker tones for fall—what really matters to them is

what makes them look their absolute best—regardless of whether that cut, style or color is on trend.

"As the seasons shift, we change colors with some trend in mind, but mostly what works for their maintenance and their skin tone so they feel beautiful," Olivia says. "Changing haircuts, [however], gets a little more fun."

Specializing in ultra sustainable practices in her salon, she coaches her clients on how to keep their hair healthy, stating "there's a lot you can do with a haircut to create massive change."

Like Delcina, the most impactful part of Olivia's job is connecting people to their confidence.

"You can hear other people compliment you [on your appearance], but if you don't see it yourself, it doesn't work. When people do connect to that confident side of themselves, they radiate," Olivia says.

WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS INCLUSION

FASHION DESIGNER ADITI BHATIYA PROVES DIVERSITY IS THE FUTURE OF FASHION

When you think fashion shows, grand, iconic events like New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week may come to mind. But don't let Columbus' humble nature fool you. The city is bursting with creativity, innovation and edginess on the fashion front. From local runway shows to markets, independent designers are choosing to hone their craft in the third largest fashion city in America.

Introducing a vibrant showcase that not only highlights unique fashion but also tells a powerful story of inclusion and representation—a runway event that transcends traditional fashion boundaries and celebrates the beauty in diversity— Passport 2 Fashion.

What is now viewed as the premier fashion show for up-and-coming designers and a display of international style and flair started as a simple idea from an Indian immigrant with deep ties to fashion.

“My family in India had a fashion and retail business back in the '90s,” Passport 2 Fashion founder Aditi Bhatiya says. “We were mostly connected to creatives in the world of fashion and my parents had a manufacturing unit where we made garments.”

Aditi says she grew up around clothes being constructed and sent out to retailers like Gap and JC Penney in the '90s. She explains that time in her life remained part of her identity which she never could shake the draw to the innovation and creative nature of fashion.

She found herself volunteering with Columbus Fashion Week working with marketing and social media for the massive celebration of style—but it was a small gap in the jam-packed fashion week schedule that caught her attention and got her wheels spinning about a way to highlight something different.

“That first year, we put the show together in I think six days,” Aditi says. “We had a great turnout—we had a great response and six or seven designers from different ethnic backgrounds on the same runway.”

That first year, though a trial run of an idea come to life, wasn’t a fluke. The shows continued year after year, evolving and morphing into something unique to Central Ohio.

“The first Passport 2 Fashion featured different cultures and various countries," Aditi says." [The designers] had different ideas of beauty and what was considered fashionable."

As the event grew, the focus widened, not only featuring the intricate creation of Latino, African and Asian designers but also exploring and highlighting the diversity of body forms and types.

“There used to be only one type of body—one type of look that was considered fashionable, at least here,” Aditi explains. “We started to explore the idea of maybe doing a fashion show that embraced more than just cultural diversity, one that celebrated diversity of body types, skin color, ethnicity, gender fluidity, age, that kind of thing.”

The concept of highlighting muses that may not be seen as the traditional model is one this non-profit founder says is a mission with a personal connection.

“I’ve struggled with my weight for years,” Aditi says. “I've been everything from a size four to a size 16 and I have dealt firsthand with what that does to self-esteem with body image issues, confidence and how you show up every day.”

Not only does Passport 2 Fashion highlight models of various shapes and sizes, it also gives designers a chance to showcase their work on a grand stage. The fees for designer participation have never exceeded $300 (whereas many designers can find themselves forking over thousands of dollars to showcase their clothing). Aditi explains the organization prides itself on making fashion and the fashion show landscape "very attainable" to anyone wanting to display their creativity.

“Designers have access to professional photo and video just by being part of the show,” she says. “Photographers and videographers take pictures that are professionally edited and of high quality and high resolution so designers can use them in their marketing materials, on their social media or websites.”

Passport 2 Fashion has grown beyond the confines of a gap in Columbus Fashion Week’s schedule. The show now stands alone, taking place at various locations across the city with The Vue hosting the August 2024 showcase. In the six years since the first show, more than 40 designers from across the nation have debuted their creations with more than 320 models of various sizes, styles, gender identities and backgrounds.

“Every year, we have stories of how either being a model has empowered somebody to feel good about themselves or how they've gone on to do the things they thought they couldn't do,” Aditi says. “It's just a very, very positive feeling.”

The seventh Passport 2 Fashion event runway show was hosted at The Vue at Bridge Park in August, marking another successful celebration of diverse storytelling through design.
