THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO 2025 TECH: INNOVATIONS DRIVING THE WORLD

The Steady Cast: Finding Balance in Today's World

As spring unfolds across our beautiful community, I find myself reflecting on meaningful connections—with ourselves, others, and the natural world. This month's "Gentlemen's Issue" explores these themes with heart and authenticity.

Our cover story, "Lines of Hope," follows local veterans participating in Project Healing Waters, finding healing through fly fishing in Columbus's serene waterways. Their journey shows how the gen tle rhythm of casting lines offers therapy for the invisible wounds of PTSD. While Bryan and I LOVE to fish, we've never tried fly fishing. But their stories have inspired us to visit our two local fly fishing stores to learn this meditative art—perhaps some of you might join us?

In "On the Level," we profile SmartLevel Concrete, a company built by two local friends with a passion for solving prevalent problems for homeowners. Our community has supported their growth and they've expanded to the Cleveland area, demonstrating that excellence is built on unwavering foundations.

Our issue wouldn't be complete this June without mentioning fathers.  "The Dadvocate" offers a refreshing look at fatherhood in 2025, exploring how men are redefining parental roles with greater presence, emotional intelligence, and collaborative approaches. These fathers are writing their own playbooks, balancing careers with caregiving and finding profound purpose in their children's lives. Women had very defined careers when I was growing up in the 70s (teacher, secretary, etc.) - but today women hold all types of demanding roles that require equal partnerships when it comes to raising children. Happy Fathers day to all the Dad's out there - and if you're not a dad, know that the women in your lives celebrate all that you do and your contributions to our lives and community.

Throughout this issue, we celebrate modern masculinity—honoring strength found in vulnerability, wisdom gained through mentorship, and freedom that comes with authentic self-expression. Each feature reveals men who lead with compassion, creating ripples of positive change across Northwest Columbus.

As you turn these pages, I hope you'll find inspiration in these stories of resilience, creativity, and genuine connection.

Wishing you warm summer breezes ~~

LINES OF HOPE

CASTING LIGHT ON HEALING THROUGH FLY FISHING

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER KERNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIM LANGMAN
Mike Nemeth, United States Army
“The river doesn’t judge. It just flows,” Andy Stiebler

In the quiet moments before sunrise, when the fog still clings to Ohio’s rivers and the morning light filters through Buckeye branches, something powerful is unfolding. Veterans, many of whom carry the invisible wounds of war, are finding connection, healing, and peace—one cast at a time.

Lines of Hope is a forthcoming docu-series produced by contentEXP Group (CXG), a Central Ohio-based film & advertising production company known for its award-winning storytelling. The series will explore the healing journeys of veterans through the art of fly fishing, set against the usually unseen tranquil backdrop of central Ohio’s forests and rivers. Through stunning cinematography and deeply personal narratives, Lines of Hope aims to reveal the therapeutic power of nature and the strength found in community. Each episode will offer a window into transformation, resilience, and the deeply human need for connection.

At the heart of this project is a genuine passion for both storytelling and service.

“A chance meeting at a friend’s wedding turned into something much bigger than we could’ve imagined,” says Brett Langolf, founder of CXG. “Andy and I connected instantly over our shared love of fly fishing and storytelling—but more importantly, our desire to give back to those who have given so much.”

Andy is Andy Stiebler, co-owner of Steffen Brothers Fly Rods and a dedicated volunteer with Project Healing Waters, a national organization that uses fly fishing as a form of physical and emotional rehabilitation for veterans. He brings both his experience in film and his deep commitment to service to the Lines of Hope team.

“The idea just clicked,” Andy says. “We wanted to use our skills to create something that doesn’t just look beautiful but actually matters. Fly fishing is such a grounding, peaceful experience—when

you share that with someone who’s been through trauma, it can be life-changing.”

Lines of Hope was awarded the largest financial grant in the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s history for a film project. That funding reflects the community’s confidence in the power of this story and the quality of the team behind it.

“Our goal is to follow multiple veterans and share their unique journeys over the course of the series,” says Brett. “We’re not just making a one-off film. We’re creating a platform where veterans’ voices are heard, honored, and uplifted.”

CXG has earned both local and global recognition for its film shorts— including the American Advertising Federation Mosaic Award and the Global Humanitarian Award for the documentary short  Win(d) Over Cancer. They bring that same level of artistry and purpose to Lines of Hope, ensuring each episode delivers not only visual beauty but also emotional depth and authenticity.

With each story, viewers will witness the small yet profound moments that define therapeutic process: a quiet breath before a cast, the ripple of water as a trout rises, the smile after a successful catch. These scenes are not just cinematic—they are symbolic. Each cast becomes an act of resilience, each catch a reminder of strength.

Lines of Hope also serves as a bridge— connecting viewers with the often-overlooked stories and voices of veterans, and showing how nature and community can offer paths forward.

“The river doesn’t judge. It just flows,” Andy reflects. “That’s the beauty of it. Out there, veterans can let go of everything else and just be present. It’s powerful.”

The series will include collaborations with veteran organization nationally and locally, veteran job placement groups, and corporations that champion military wellness. With each episode, the team hopes to bring more awareness and support to the needs—and the potential—of those who have served.

As the series moves into production, Brett, Andy, and the entire CXG team are inviting others to join the journey.

“Whether you’re a veteran, a supporter, or someone who just believes in the healing power of nature, this story is for you,” Brett says. “We’re casting lines, but we’re also casting hope.”

The Lines of Hope team began actively filming this past spring and will continue through the fall, capturing the changing seasons and the veterans' ongoing journeys. The goal is to launch the series in Spring 2026, with special premiere events and community screenings in partnership with local veteran organizations.

Lines of Hope is more than a series. It’s a movement—one that invites us to slow down, look closer, and listen deeply. Because sometimes, healing begins with something as simple as water, a rod, and a quiet place to begin again.

SHARED CONCERNS

Zachary Cantrell and Jeff Osborn met over the course of their respective real estate careers, commiserating over the issues that uneven and sunken concrete can cause.

Around Columbus, they “saw how much of a hassle it was for homeowners,” Zach said, “and how it hurt both safety and curb appeal.” In light of this realization, the two partnered with an expanding foam solution from Supportworks called Polylevel® to create SmartLevel.

Jeff Osborn (left) and Zachary Cantrell (right)

“Our goal from the beginning,” Zach explains, “has been to change the way homeowners experience the construction process: fast, clean, effective, and done right the first time.” And with this goal, the two have expanded their company all from Jeff’s garage in the 43235 area during the height of the pandemic. Now they have two locations and four rigs, one in Columbus and Cleveland.

BOOSTED CONFIDENCE

By targeting concrete pads and slabs across the city, the SmartLevel team not only lifts and stabilizes sunken patches, they “also cover everything from sidewalks, driveways, porches, and patios to garage floors and pool decks—” Zach said, “basically any residential or commercial flatwork that’s sinking or settling.” Which, for any homeowner or property owner, can fix a problem that would otherwise get worse over time.

The two have worked together through tough times, and the opportunities they’ve given to homeowners to improve their curb appeal and boost safety make it all worthwhile. “Most people wait until it gets really bad—” Zach muses, “but the sooner we catch it, the easier (and more affordable) it is to repair.”

While homeowners often comment about the improved curb appeal and peace of mind they receive from SmartLevel’s work, “we’re seeing growing demand from businesses too—” he added, “especially those concerned with liability or maintaining a professional appearance for customers and clients.”

TRUSTED PARTNERS

Getting their help doesn’t have to be scary, either. SmartLevel stands by its system with “a 5-year warranty on all completed Polylevel and Nexus pro work on the joints and cracks in the repair area,” Zach confirms, “we also have a lifetime warranty for our two-part protection system and our three-part concrete protection system.” He added.

THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE to 2025 Tech

Stay on top of innovations that help the world move.

When it comes to gadgets and tech, Noah has his own fair share to follow. When he’s not with his kids and wife, he spends time on his PlayStation5. That is, when he’s not dealing with glitches and the constant maintenance of his saltwater aquarium and its own list of devices to worry about.

Columbus is no stranger to technology. From the soon-to-be-complete Intel installment, rumblings of a 'tech corridor', and even (for those who remember) one of the few locations in the country to host an Incredible Universe megastore, it's clear that Test Market USA has always been open to change.

And today’s world is changing on a day-to-day basis. AI is everywhere, the video game industry has continued to grow in popularity ever since a certain plumber jumped down that green pipe to save a princess, and even the fitness industry with apps and equipment from Peloton, the shifting sands of the tech world is quicker than what most can do to stay ahead of the trends and new inventions.

To help you keep your head during these wild times, we have six tech developments for you to discover and see how they can help in your life, professionally and personally.

One of our entries is not only cutting edge, but it's also locally grown. And it all started when Chris and Wes Hopkin were looking for a way to allow their aging parents to stay in their home. With the help of their father, Rick, they pulled together electronic components in the late 1990s.

As their homemade systems were successful, the brothers grew it into a smart-home integration business in 2007. Today, EZ-Integration offers services and products in the growing industry for homeowners all over the Columbus area.

Your productivity, health, and free time can be front and center in 2025, and these tools are here to help. So let's get to the list!

With tech options that are local, playable, and even wearable, we hope this list will inspire you to make the most of technology this year.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

AI starts with ChatGPT and other programs that can help with several needs, from throwing together a dinner to creating professional communications. This past fall, Columbus AI Week in Hilliard focused on the growing field. This “opensourced, un-conference,” as referred to by their website, plans to return in 2025.  https://www.columbusaiweek.com/

HANDHELD GAMING

Most everyone can take part in this digital playground, and it’s not just for kids anymore. Nostalgic classics and brand new games for adults are commonplace. The Nintendo Switch 2 releases this June (starting at $449.99), joining the Steam Deck (at $399), and the Sony PS Portal (starting at $199).

SMART HOMES

According to Chris Hopkin at EZ-Integration, there are two big developments coming soon in the smart home industry. AI and smart home devices are combining for simpler voice commands. Also, progress is being made in allowing devices from multiple manufacturers to connect under universal control systems. EZ-Integration, Inc. 614-495-3700, https://www.ez-integration.com/

TODOIST

This task management tool allows for individuals and teams to organize, prioritize, and schedule anything. The best part is that there’s a free version. If that doesn’t meet your needs, there are pro and business plans that start at $48 a year. Available on the App Store and Google Play.

PELOTON

Founded in 2012, Peloton remains one of the most popular and best-reviewed fitness programs available. The app, available on Apple, Android, Amazon, and Roku, allows you access to their workouts and the community, even without a machine. Check out their website for more information on products and subscription options. https://www.onepeloton.com/

SMART GLASSES

With many choices, you can select between models with AI tools, built-in cameras, and theater modes. PCMag also reports that CES 2025 boasted real-time language translation, private closed captioning, and even color-changing lenses. Ray-Ban Smart Glasses starting at $299. XReal One starting at $197. Amazon Echo Frames starting at $269.

Shaping StrongeraFuture

We had a chance to get to the bottom of Pete and Megan Yeh’s amazing fitness journey and how what they learned and now coach to others can help you build a future of strength for yourself. We think it’ll make you just as pumped to get to the gym as we are. Check it out:

A RIVETING Q&A WITH COLUMBUS STRENGTH-BUILDING EXPERTS MEGAN AND PETE YEH.

WE DON’T JUST HELP PEOPLE

“WORK OUT.” WE HELP THEM  GET STRONG —SAFELY, EFFICIENTLY, AND FOR LIFE.

CL: WHAT STARTED YOU TWO ON YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY? HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED WITH IT?

M&P: For both of us, the journey started with injury. We were lifelong athletes, but as we hit our late 30s, staying active started to feel harder. The injuries were piling up, and we realized we needed a new approach—one that would help us stay in the game, so to speak. That’s when we discovered the power of strength training.

Getting stronger changed everything. It didn’t just help us recover—it made us  more resilient. We could return to the activities we loved and keep up with life’s physical demands. And honestly? Lifting became addicting. You can see and feel the tangible results. Your body changes. You walk through the world differently.

At the end of the day, our story is simple: strength gave us our lives back. Now, we help others find that same freedom with Starting Strength Columbus.

CL: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO’S JUST STARTING OUT, OR CAN’T SEEM TO KEEP THE ‘STREAK’ GOING?

M&P: First, know this: success doesn’t come from being perfect—it comes from showing up. You’ll have great days in the gym, and you’ll have tough ones. But the real difference is made by consistency. That’s how real, lasting results are built.

You don’t have to do it alone. A coach can make all the difference—not just by motivating you or helping with your form, but by giving you a plan that’s tailored to your goals. They help you train safely, progress steadily, and stay accountable. Without that support, it’s easy to lose momentum, feel lost, or eventually give up.

CL: HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS HELP PEOPLE KEEP THEIR GOALS?

M&P: Most people think they're strength training because they’re moving a weight—or body weight—during a workout. But true strength training is different: it’s intentional and measurable. And when done right, it delivers results that most workouts simply can’t.

At our gym, we use the Starting Strength method, which focuses on compound lifts like squats and deadlifts, combined with adding weight over time. This approach isn’t just about getting stronger, it’s about building long-term physical capability, resilience, and health.

Pete and Megan Yeh

STARTING STRENGTH GYMS

As a physician working in the hospital, Megan cares for patients, who in her words, have “physical decline often rooted in preventable weakness. That decline is often reversible—if we start building strength early enough.” Strength building is the start of prevention. She adds, “The great news is you can make significant strength gains even when you’re older—it’s never too late to start.”

Pete, on the other hand, is all about the wins. His coaching position allows him to “see people grow stronger, more capable, and more confident every single day.”

Together, their community is a game-changer. "People often walk through our doors for the coaching," says Megan, "but they stay because of the relationships they build. You're not just working out beside strangers; you're becoming part of something bigger."

Making inroads to people's lives so they stay in shape and grow strength for living, the Yehs added a strength training gym to the Dublin skyline to keep up their own fitness journey while also helping others do the same. You can start by visiting www.startingstrengthgyms.com/columbus/ today.

If your goal is to improve bone density, prevent injury, gain functional strength, or stay active for the long haul, strength training is essential—and it needs to be done correctly. Lifting heavier weights for lower reps, with proper form and coaching, yields strength and health outcomes that far surpass typical high-rep, low-weight workouts.

CL: WHAT IS ONE SUCCESS (OR FAILURE) STORY THAT KEEPS YOU GOING?

M&P: Every day, we’re inspired by the small victories— because those “small” wins often change lives. We’ve seen clients lose a dress size, reverse insulin resistance, walk without a walker, come off disability, and return to the hobbies that bring them joy.

In one example, we have a client with chronic leg issues who quit activities she loved like skiing and playing tennis. She’d been through surgeries, physical therapy, and nothing improved her situation. However, through consistent training, support, and a program tailored to her needs, she made a remarkable comeback. Today, she plays tennis every week—and just got back from skiing double black diamonds in Colorado.

CL: DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MUST-HAVE EQUIPMENT THAT A PERSON COULD GET WHEN WORKING WITH YOU?

M&P: Lifting shoes, for safety and stability under the bar, a positive attitude, and an open mind.

CL: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS? HOW DOES THE LOCAL COMMUNITY FIT INTO THOSE PLANS?

M&P: At our core, we believe everyone deserves the strength and confidence that comes from lifting—no matter your age or experience level. That’s why we’re committed to serving the Dublin and greater Columbus community for years to come; creating a space where lifters of all backgrounds can thrive.

This summer, beginning June 9th, we’re launching a 6-week lifting camp specifically for teens. It’s designed to teach proper technique, build confidence, and instill a love for a skill that can benefit them for life. We see lifting as more than just a workout—it’s a foundation for lifelong health and resilience.

CL: ANY LAST THOUGHTS FOR OUR READERS?

M&P: If you’re curious about what we do, we invite you to come in for a free 30-minute session. You’ll get a feel for our supportive environment, meet our team, and see firsthand how we help everyday people unlock their strength. Our future is about empowering you—and we’re just getting started.

THE DADVOCATE

MODERN FATHERHOOD IS SHOWING UP, NOT FILLING IN.

The modern dad looks a lot different than he did a generation ago.

Gone is the stereotype of the distant disciplinarian or the once-in-a-while fun parent. Today’s fathers are showing up in carpool lines, in group texts about soccer games, and—most importantly—in the daily lives of their kids in ways that feel refreshingly active. They're no longer content being a supporting character in the story. They want a leading role.

And yeah, they’re still learning the lines as they go.

The shift didn’t happen overnight. But the pandemic gave it a shove. When the world shut down, so did business trips, office hours, and commutes. For dads used to airport lounges and late-night meetings, it was disorienting. Face-to-face was once how you proved your value. Suddenly, value looked more like being at home—helping with school, learning to do a ponytail, and stepping into a parenting role many hadn’t been fully invited into.

That invitation? It turned out to be an upgrade.

THE RISE OF THE HANDS-ON DAD

Today’s dads aren’t “babysitting” their kids. They’re running warm-ups at swim practice. Designing booster hoodies. Volunteering. All because they want to.

As Matt Lofy, Founder and Host of  The Dadass Podcast and President/CEO of the Worthington Area Chamber, puts it: “The definition of a modern dad is still being rewritten—and that’s a good thing.”

It’s not about perfection. It’s about presence.

One diaper blowout changed everything for Matt. “I never imagined a changing table would turn me into a Dadvocate,” he says, “but even the smallest parenting moments can lead to big change.” That spark led to over 300 changing tables being placed across Columbus.

PUT THE PHONE DOWN

Sometimes the moment sneaks up—like a random Target run. You hop in the car, glance over, and boom—there’s your kid. Just sitting there.

You’re not gonna be driving them around forever. Soon they’ll be driving themselves.

“It’s the small, everyday moments that become the heartbeat of parenting.”

So the phone goes in the back seat. Music goes up. Even if the song’s ridiculous—you learn the chorus. You sing, the louder the better.

“It’s the small, everyday moments that become the heartbeat of parenting,” Matt says.

THE STARTING LINEUP

Dads aren’t benchwarmers anymore. They’re in the starting lineup. Not as replacements, but as teammates. Fatherhood is changing.

And it’s going to be a good game.
