We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit—I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.
But the truth is—that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.
We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.
I love to travel to Mexico. There’s something about the food, the culture, the history—of being someplace totally different that is wildly attractive to me. Typically, we vacation at all-inclusive resorts along the Riviera Maya as we enjoy the convenience of having everything onsite. This year however, we wanted to experience Mexico differently—cooking on our own, not having to worry about what time breakfast or lunch is over, having space to just be by ourselves indoors and out and it was an incredibly rewarding experience which I highly recommend.
Recently, I've been reflecting on my relationships with family and how we spend our time together. I started by identifying the activities we don't enjoy, like our "have-to-do" lists (laundry, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn). For you, it might be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough family dinners. But I've discovered that "adventures" and "exploration" don't have to be grand or elaborate. They can be as simple as trying a new recipe, playing a board game on the patio, walking a new trail or finding a unique event/activity nearby.
Our hope with this issue is to encourage you to make room for exploration. Prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. Lose yourself on a trail or in a book. Take that trip you've been thinking about. Make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on your “have-to-do” list.
Here's to embracing the joy of exploration and making space for the moments that truly enrich our lives.

A hidden gem offering tranquility and lush greenery just moments away
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY LABAKI
You find yourself in a Pacific paradise. Lush greenery and banana trees line the walkways on the grounds surrounding a large pool. Statues of birds, fishermen and Easter Island Moai heads are sprinkled throughout, and the chatter of parrots floats on a gentle breeze, inviting you to explore and see all that there is to see. At its center, a large home filled with treasures from travels past, each with its own story. But this enchanting place isn’t on a far-off island—it’s right here in Columbus.
Timbrook Guesthouse owners and innkeepers Jill and Peter Dole have lived on the property since 1988, and raised their CONTINUED >
family in the home before deciding to turn the property into a luxury bed and breakfast. Though they initially intended to start an inn on the west coast, the Doles eventually decided they would use their love of travel to create a new kind of experience and bring the aloha spirit to the Midwest. Timbrook was carefully curated to be both a relaxing bed and breakfast and incorporate design elements which hearken back to Peter’s Hawaiian roots.
“It’s his heritage, it’s been important to him,” says Jill. “I just love the plants. I’m all about plants and color.”
There are many decor and art pieces which give the inn a cozy tropical energy, including an abundance of plant life, hula dancers, pineapples and a portrait of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. The furniture and patterned wallpaper demonstrate a lively use of vibrant color throughout the inn, with rich greens, vibrant jewel tones of blues and orange and warm wood elements creating a welcoming environment.
But Timbrook doesn’t restrict itself only to Pacific Island motifs. Jill and Peter’s eclectic decor is composed of unique pieces, many of which were obtained during their travels across the United States and Central America. From quirky knick-knacks to beautiful paintings, there is something special to discover in every room of the inn. Many of the decor pieces hold more than just aesthetic value for the Doles.
“It’s funny, I mean, we have all this stuff,” says Jill. “There’s just too many for me to pick which is my favorite because so many of them have a story, and I can look at them and remember, ‘On that trip we did this.’”
Each of the inn’s six guest suites is designed to have its own unique color story and style. The Blue Bird Suite, with its walls of blue floral patterns and a neutral, pastel palette, evokes a softer, more subdued feel, especially when compared to the bold canopy of rich reds, rusty
golds, and contrasting blues of the Santa Fe Suite and its detailed Southwestern decor.
Outside, guests are immediately immersed in this world as Timbrook’s curling driveway leads them away from Olentangy River Road, hiding it from sight. The tropical bird aviary, hot spa and pool continue the inn’s tropical theme onto the grounds where flowers and lush greenery create a calming sense of seclusion, as though you were in an island jungle. It was important for Jill that the grounds were designed to be an escape where guests could connect with nature.
“So many people say when they drive up that driveway they feel like they’ve entered a whole new world,” Jill says. “They can’t believe they’re in Columbus, Ohio. We’ve created this—and this is in other people’s words—we’ve created this oasis. I want it to be tranquil. Serenity all-around.”
INSIGHTS FROM RESIDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ON MAKING THE TRANSITION
ARTICLE BY ASHLEY LABAKI
““There are many opportunities to make new friends and stay involved in senior living communities.”
Whether you’re a senior or the adult child of a senior, deciding to make the move to a senior living community can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. This is an exciting opportunity for you to explore your options and take a journey into a wonderful new chapter of your story.
We spoke with Wesley Glen resident Peggy Keener and her daughter, Stacie Smith, about their experiences, how to explore your options and ultimately find a community that you’ll love.
So, how do you know when it might be time to make the move to a senior living community? It depends on the person. Some seniors make the move following injuries or the onset of serious illness, but if you make the move before you have to, you have the grace to make your decision without the pressure of an unforeseen emergency.
Selecting a senior living community is just like picking any other home, and the best place to start is by making a list of the qualities and features that are important to you. Do you value amenities, clubs or activities? How about transportation or access to local businesses? Your priorities are relevant to your search and should be a consideration.
It is also crucial to consider what your needs are, and what they could be down the road. Some seniors may need more significant care day-to-day than others, and Peggy and Stacie recommend thinking about future levels of care, as your needs may change with time. Peggy, her husband and adult daughter all reside at Wesley Glen together because it not only met all of their current needs, but will continue to do so as their needs evolve.
“We didn’t want to have to move again,” said Peggy. “They can take care of us on assisted living, on memory care. We have very good therapy as well. We just wanted a lifetime of care.”
Once you’ve done your research and selected a few communities that meet your criteria, the next step is to take a tour. This allows you to explore communities in-person and see as many places as possible before making your decision. You can also take a list of questions you may have. If you’re the adult child of a senior with Alzheimer’s or dementia, you may be the one making decisions about your parent’s living arrangements.
Stacie recommends keeping parents involved by bringing them along on tours and prioritizing what they would want throughout the process.
“Think about what might be important to your mom or dad,” Stacie said.
Moving to a senior living community is a big step, but it will also take away some of the burden of caring for your home, while still allowing you to have the freedom and independence you enjoy in your current home. There are many opportunities to make new friends and stay involved in senior living communities, too.
Peggy leads bridge games, daily exercises and stays active with friends and various clubs at Wesley Glen. While she knows many seniors may feel apprehension about such a big change, there is, she says, no reason to fear.
“What most people don’t realize is that it’s impossible to be lonely here,” said Peggy.

The initial amount funded at origination will be based on a fixed rate; however, this product contains an additional draw feature. As the borrower repays the balance on the line, the borrower may make additional draws during the draw period. Planning for a trip is exciting. It’s also overwhelming, mainly due to fretting over what to pack.
My job as a personal stylist is to help take the anxiety out of planning for your style travel needs. Here are my best tips to ensure your suitcases are filled with the essentials.
Make a list of activities you’ll be partaking in. This can be anything from lying on the beach to attending a wedding or business meeting. Be specific and take the time to visualize how you want to show up. Write it down or create a Pinterest board for inspiration.
Continually check the weather leading up to your travel date. If you’re going to a tropical area, make sure you’re prepared for layering at nighttime. Are you visiting a cooler climate? Make sure there aren’t any unexpected heatwaves. Sporadic changes in weather can happen anywhere.
Save space by utilizing the military roll to save space and reduce wrinkling. This is especially helpful for over-packers. When executed properly, you can fit five days worth of outfits in a carry-on by utilizing this practice. If you’re unfamiliar with this technique, a simple “how to” YouTube search can show you. You can even implement packing cubes. These little mesh zipper bags help keep your items nice and orderly.
Stick with neutrals. I recommend picking neutrals along with one or two accent colors. When you stick with neutral colors like black, white or beige, mixing and matching outfits becomes so much easier. This is especially important for those traveling abroad.
Don’t forget about shoes. You don’t need a new pair of shoes for every single outfit. Stick to packing neutral shoes that work with multiple outfits. For example, one comfortable pair for exploring, a pair of dressy shoes for fun nights out and an elevated, casual shoe to create a classic look.
LEARN MORE: The ultimate packing hack is scheduling the time to pre-plan. Never underestimate the power of creating a packing list, even for the smallest items. Oftentimes, not doing these steps is what causes people to overpack, only to realize they wasted time and space doing so.
Sticking with neutrals makes putting outfits together a cinch. The perfect carry-on

Ever wonder what it’s like to fly private? This high-end, luxury service isn’t only reserved for celebrities. Business professionals, corporations and families going on vacation utilize this exclusive service for the convenience and flexibility it offers—choosing to experience a superior level of comfort and safety that far exceeds their travel needs and expectations.
As a private flight attendant—or as she likes to call herself, a cabin attendant—Lauren Baum, along with anyone else who has the privileged job of catering to celebrities, athletes and other high-profile clientele in the air, goes through extensive training, many of them obtaining
specialized culinary and etiquette training in addition to their initial and yearly education.
On any given day, Lauren explains she can wear the hat of executive assistant, travel agent, chef, nanny, florist, bartender, medic or party planner. Basically, whatever her guests need her to be, she finds a way to accommodate them while providing the highest level of service.
“It’s so much more personal in that it is completely catered to that specific flight and set of guests,” Lauren says. “There is always something to learn and skills to expound upon. I am constantly looking for cooking, plating, floral and aircraft setup inspiration in between flights."
Essentially, Lauren networked her way into getting her first flight, setting herself up in training after running into a friend who was in the aviation space. Private aviation, she says, is “the biggest smallest industry,” where you must “network like it’s your job." As with most careers, relationship building is key to success, as is professionalism.
“Going from training to getting that first job is very difficult,” she explains. "It’s being in meetings and networking with pilots. You need to be able to interview very well and be able to carry yourself well.”
The most surprising thing about her job, she says, is how kind her clientele is. It may be easy to assume there is self-importance with people who fly private, but Lauren reassures us that is not the case.
“I feel such pride in my work,” she says. “I’m able to enjoy certain things I wouldn’t otherwise be able to, and with that comes so much responsibility. You have to constantly be asking yourself; ‘How can I elevate the guest experience?’”
In addition to accompanying guests to their desired destinations, which have included Budapest, Italy, London and Prague among many others, Lauren also coaches others looking to get into the private aviation space through her consulting business, Cabins in the Sky.
Her group coaching sessions, which are mostly conducted online, guides those looking to get into private aviation on preparing for interviews, helping with resumes, learning how to network to get your foot in the door and building the foundation of being in the industry.
“You’re not waking up going to a mimosa brunch— you’re working,” Lauren confirms. “That’s a big misconception in the industry. The cabin attendants who do the best? They see [the job] for what it is.”
She emphasizes that your professional background (or personal, for that matter) isn’t a huge factor in finding success with private aviation—it’s much more about having a charismatic personality, a rigorous sense of discipline and a
love for networking. Through her consulting programs, she has coached everyone from nurses and teachers to yoga instructors, dietitians and fitness coaches.
“You need to be able to carry on a conversation and know what’s going on in the world,” Lauren says of the profession. “You don’t need to be a doctor, but you need to be able to carry on a conversation considering the caliber of people you’re working with.”
“Going from training to getting that first job is very difficult,” Lauren explains. “You know the saying, ‘It’s not what you know; it’s who you know?’ I think it’s a combination of both. It’s being in meetings and networking with pilots. There has to be a different level of professionalism."

PADDLEBOARD TO INNER PEACE WITH ZEN PADDLE'S NEW ADVENTURES
ARTICLE BY ANNETTE WITHERSPOON
When friends reached out to Daphne Fandrich for comfort during a stressful time, the seasoned paddle boarder invited them to join her on the water, where she has always found solace. Helping her friends find peace on the water inspired Daphne to create Zen Paddle, a unique paddleboarding experience with a mission to build a community that offers tranquility, and empowers women along the way.
At 49, Daphne was hesitant to start a new venture, but something inside her told her to go for it.
“I felt like if I didn’t do this, I would regret it forever,” Daphne said. “I feel very much like people can do something new as they age.”
Through a little bit of research and a lot of determination, she found a paddle boarding company that equipped her with six boards and paddles, and she began to bring her vision to life.
Offering scheduled excursions to the public, including small group paddles for organizations, Zen Paddle offers a fun time for friends and strangers alike who want to enjoy time together on the water, from morning paddles with coffee to picnic lunch outings.
“The excursions are guided and very intentional,” Daphne said. “Connecting to nature helps you connect to yourself. This is a way for people to get back to being themselves.”
Perhaps what’s most unique about Zen Paddle is the Zen paddles themselves. Every paddle has a theme to help women connect with other women. Daphne carefully named each paddle with words that uplift, inspire and encourage women including “The Queen,” “The Sun Seeker,” “The Warrior,” “The Whirlwind,” “The Daydreamer,” “The Wanderlust” and “The Guide.”
Though Zen Paddle’s focus is largely based on uplifting women, men are also welcome (and

encouraged) to join the paddle party. Children ages 15-17 are allowed with parental consent as well. Outings are offered at Alum Creek, Hoover Reservoir and the Scioto River. All skill levels welcome.

Mexico’s Best Kept Secrets
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA FEDERICO
The Quarry, Beachfront Penthouse www.airbnb.com
Most travelers to the Mexican states of Quintana Roo or Yucatan go the all-inclusive route—which is convenient as your restaurants and entertainment are steps from your hotel room. But there’s another side to Mexico that can be softer on your wallet, give you the ultimate flexibility and enable you to explore Mexico and all it has to offer on your own terms.
Consider AirBnB or VRBO. Renting a condo can give you more flexibility, more space, more privacy and at a price point that works for you. In Cancun, consider properties close to Kukulcan Blvd. Condo selection is greater in Cancun, but consider south of Cancun if a home if more your style.

Of course you don’t want to spend your whole vacation in the kitchen, but if you’re a foodie or don’t want to eat out every day, having your own kitchen is a plus. Experience the fresh food selections at the Soriana Supermarket or Chedraui in Cancun, try out an authentic recipe or keep it simple. Local restaurants in Cancun are top notch and feature local Mayan cuisine and local ingredients. Typically, they’re open air style overlooking the Nichupte Lagoon side and feature breathtaking sunset views. And for the ultimate luxury—hire a private chef for the week or for a spectacular evening. Check with your rental host as they usually have recommendations that are surprisingly affordable.
Discover Mexico on your terms and create unforgettable memories. 3. WHAT TO DO
Exploring is part of the fun of Mexico. With several marinas in Cancun, you can charter a captain for a private fishing tour (fishingbooker.com) where they’ll clean your catch and some nearby restaurants will even cook it for you. Just a few hours east of Cancun is Chichen Itza, one of the seven modern wonders of the world. Consider hiring a private tour guide to pick you up at your villa, and experience Chichen Itza, a local cenote and lunch in Valladolid with your own private guide for the day.
