As we step into the new year, the air is filled with excitement and the promise of new beginnings. For many, January is a time to set fresh goals and envision new horizons. However, for some, it can also be a reminder of past resolutions that didn’t quite pan out and the pressure to make this year different.
In this issue of Northwest Columbus City Lifestyle, we’re focusing on sustainable, long-term improvements rather than quick fixes. Our aim is to inspire you to make lasting changes in your physical, emotional, financial and mental wellbeing.
I’m writing this column while Bryan and I are on vacation in Cape Coral, Florida. Every year, when it’s time to plan a getaway, we debate whether it’s the right time—work, family commitments and the busyness of life always seem to get in the way. But each year, we remind ourselves that we need to make the time to unwind, reset and recharge. There’s no better time than the end of the year to make a conscious effort to unwind—to reflect on 2024 and look forward to 2025.
During our vacation, we pondered our personal goals for the coming year and beyond. Our list is always ambitious, but when we lay it all out and talk it through, we both gain clarity. This process reminds me that in life—whether it’s business, finance, food, home or personal health—it’s not the occasional grand gestures that make the difference—but the consistent, everyday actions.
For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Similarly, indulging in a beautiful steak dinner with cocktails and crème brûlée every night isn’t best for your health, but enjoying it once in a while is perfectly fine. It’s not the sometimes choices we make; it’s the most-of-the-time choices that shape our lives.
So, as you plan your year, remember to balance ambition with practicality. Plan that vacation and also work to establish regular rest in your weekly routine. Join a fitness community or gym and also enjoy those limited edition Dunkalion cookies you’ve been eyeing at Lion Cub’s Cookies (trust me, they're amazing). It’s the consistent, small actions that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year.
Here’s to a wonderful 2025! We’re rooting for you every step of the way.
Warm regards,

1- Guaranteed Rate home equity line of credit (HELOC) is an open-end product where the full loan amount (minus the origination fee) will be 100% drawn at the time of origination. The initial amount funded at origination will be based on a fixed rate; however, this product contains an additional draw feature. As the borrower repays the balance on the line, the borrower may make additional draws during the draw period. If the borrower elects to make an additional draw, the interest rate for that draw will be set as of the date of the draw and will be based on an Index, which is the Prime Rate published in the Wall Street Journal for the calendar month preceding the date of the additional draw, plus a fixed margin. Accordingly, the fixed rate for any additional draw may be higher than the fixed rate for the initial draw. This product is currently not offered in the states of New York, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. The HELOC requires you to pledge your home as collateral, and you could lose your home if you fail to repay. Borrowers must meet minimum lender requirements in order to be eligible for financing. Available for primary, second homes and investment properties only. Dependent on minimum credit score and debt-toincome requirements. Occupancy status, lien position and credit score are all factors to determine your rate and max available loan amount. Not all applicants will be approved. Applicants subject to credit and underwriting approval. Contact Guaranteed Rate for more information and to discuss your individual circumstances. Restrictions Apply. 2-Approval may be granted in five minutes but may be subject to verification of income and employment. Five business day funding

It’s a common New Year’s resolution to look for ways to increase your income. While ringing in the new year with a well-timed raise may or may not be in the cards, there are many money habits you can practice to make the wealth you already have go even further this year.
sense to pay off the smallest balances first. “Then, start using the snowball effect," Daugherty explains. “As soon as you pay off one balance, redirect that monthly payment to the next debt. Never let the freed up cashflow wind up in your discretionary spending.”
With money on the mind, we asked Ameriprise Financial Advisor Nathan Daugherty for his advice on how to be financially healthy in 2025. He recommends following three rules of finance: prepare for the unexpected, don’t spend more than you make, and eliminate debt.
His first suggestion for people looking to improve their financial lives is to establish an emergency fund. “This is typically defined as three-six months’ worth of expenses,” Daugherty explains. Without an emergency fund, debt occurs and is often the biggest hurdle to tackle when it comes to getting your finances in line.
Daugherty suggests taking advantage of balance transfer offers on credit cards, and paying off the highest interest rate balances first. He says, “This will ultimately save you the most money over time.” If the highest interest rate is also the highest balance, though, it may make more
Daugherty describes discretionary spending as money spent on entertainment, dining, gifts, travel or hobbies. Limiting this is the next big step in becoming more financially stable. “We generally find that discretionary spending is more than we think. And this is the category we can adjust most significantly in our daily lives,” Daugherty says.
In line with discretionary spending, it’s common to experience "lifestyle creep" where you increase spending as your income increases. Lifestyle creep makes it harder to save for your future because you feel required to save more to maintain the same level of comfort. But how do we avoid it?
Daugherty says to “follow the rule of thirds.” One-third of your raise goes toward taxes, one-third goes to longterm savings, and the final third can be viewed as bonus cash.
Daugherty also encourages his clients to simplify their spending to help
spot long-term trends. He suggests putting all fixed expenses on one credit card, discretionary expenses on the other, and to “pay the cards off every month on the same day so you have a running tally of your total spend rate.”
The final step in finding financial freedom is with purposeful savings. Daugherty explains you can start by saving 10 percent of your income for retirement in any tax-advantaged savings options that are available to you, such as in a 401(k) or Roth IRA. “The power of compound interest is phenomenal," he says. "And when you add ‘tax-deferred’ into the equation, that power grows exponentially.”
Daugherty’s top piece of advice, though? Find an accountability buddy when it comes to your accounting.
“There’s something about human nature that forces us to work harder if we know somebody else is watching our progress,” Daugherty says. “If you don’t have someone in your life to help with this, speaking to a financial advisor is the best way to find a partner who will be invested in your long-term financial success.”

Resolutions getting to you? Well, ditch getting that gym membership that you’ll leave unused until you cancel it in May. Forget those yoga classes that remind you how inflexible you’ve become. Instead, try some of these options to get your blood moving this year.
Pickleball rose to a nationwide trend not from the typical trendsetters like Gen Z or Millennials, but from Baby Boomers. And in the wake of this trend, just two years ago,Pickle & Chill picked up the charge in a big way by creating an experience that will get your heart racing.
Get your glow on with some barre, dance cardio or trampoline cardio at Studio Glow. If that piques your interest, then you should sign up for some classes to move and shake until you feel your best for 2025. Or you can join one of their themed events to help get you out of the house.
Reach new heights with this indoor rock-climbing facility just off 71 and 161, near Anheuser Busch. They’ve got all the gear, so you just show up with a water bottle and get ready to, er, rock.
Want to see how well your aim is? This firing range is equipped with state-of-the-art systems to help you up your game. Also, planning a bachelor party or girls’ night of firing fun could be the ticket to keeping your resolutions on point.
When the OSU tennis team moved out of their Henderson Road digs, David Seckel, Pickle & Chill director, saw an opportunity. Since first opening in fall 2022, P&C has had over 10,000 new visitors and boasts nine indoor/10 outdoor courts, plus an outdoor party patio, making it the largest dedicated indoor/outdoor pickleball facility in the Midwest. Never played? No problem. As Amy, P&C partnerships director says, “Pickleball is one of those sports that can be casual as well as professional.” They have beginner classes, pick-up games, leagues and tournaments, and there’s even The Columbus Sliders, a pro pickleball team that practices there. “The energy here is high—it’s very social and we’re member centric. We’ve got a casual community—it’s a fun vibe,” says Amy.
So much of what I had read regarding aging indicated that concentrating on strengthening is much more important than aerobic exercise After turning 70 and having shoulder surgery plus an "iffy" bone density, it was time to get more serious about my strength and conditioning
The personal attention I have received is amazing They really took care to understand my medical history as well as any current pain issues My coach is so patient and makes sure I do things correctly, giving me cues to assist with learning proper technique Another plus is No Contract to sign! I highly recommend them to anyone, but especially to ladies who think that lifting weights is a guy thing! It is fun and rewarding! Carol, 70

Alex Sheen started "Because I Said I Would" in 2012, the day after losing his father to cancer. The idea was simple: give people the ability to keep their promises. In a time when broken promises are the norm, choosing to stick with something to its completion can be the single most important thing we do. Turns out, Alex was right. Fulfilling promises—just like how his father always did—was exactly what people needed.
Technology has made correspondence by mail nearly obsolete, but there is still something profound in receiving meaningful mail. And for over 15.2 million people around the world, a letter from Alex Sheen has proven to be a life-changing event. The craziest part is all the letters say the same thing.
When Alex’s family asked him to give the eulogy at his father’s funeral, the then 27-year-old had an epiphany. He kept being reminded of how his father was a man of his word, when it clicked: if more people would keep their word, the world would be a better place. He then made a few cards to hand out at the funeral.
Next, Alex began mailing 10 postcards to anyone who asked for them—anywhere in the world, at no cost. They’re small, white cards with the words “because I said I would” at the bottom. You fill out what you plan to do and give it to the person it’s for. “When you complete the promise,” Alex says in one of his many TED Talks, “you get the card back and can keep it with yourself as a reminder that you are a person of your word.”
Turns out, writing down promises is a huge “hack” for keeping them. In fact, the promises Alex has seen fulfilled have ranged from a 4-year-old afraid of the dark promising to sleep in her own bed to a 22-year-old who promised to take responsibility for a car accident while driving intoxicated.
Despite his lawyers urging him to lie for a lighter sentence, the young man chose to use one of Alex’s cards as a better path. After serving his sentence in full, he joined Alex’s team and now helps other people work through their promises. All because he
"A camp makes it easier for people to see the value of their giving"
wrote it down.
Promises like these moved Alex to start a charity. He saw a snapshot of humanity through the response—it was clear there was a deeper need. Alex had been learning about healthy mental health habits and resiliency skills for dealing with stress, grief and depression. By teaching others these skills, Alex figured people could keep promises better.
Alex quickly realized that “if this was going to be a charity, it has to be more than just a piece of paper.” In researching options, he got his answer. “A lot of the camps in Ohio have been around for over 100 years,” Alex said. “It’s tough for a charity to last that long.”
Alex wanted a movement that would last. Mental health best practices and grief counseling will always be needed. He figured the camp model would be ideal. Plus, Alex points out that a camp makes it “easier for people to see the value of their giving,” adding the impact of programs offered and thinking that could last 100 years—keeps him going.
Camp can be incredibly relaxing. It’s withdrawn from daily life and all its stressors. A camp also affords the time needed for healing. Many of "Because I Said I Would" campers are dealing with intense grief, deep tragedies, abuse—things that a 45-minute session just can't cover.
Along with archery, horseback riding, escape rooms and hot tubs, the camp also offers a range of self-control, goal-setting and stress management programs for caregivers, nonprofit employees, grieving families or anyone struggling with self-control or dealing with bereavement. This year, programs for youth facing mental health adversities will be added.
Now, 13 years later, Alex still mails cards but has added mental health resiliency programs, life skills, dozens of volunteer groups and 92 acres of land to fulfill the vision he had while celebrating the life of his father—a man who kept his word.
To help Alex and his team, you can donate through the website: camp. becauseisaidiwould.org or get your company involved in a volunteer day.
The origins of wellness began with ancient practices like ayurveda as far back as 3000 B.C. By the 2000s, modern wellness trends like workplace wellness and boutique fitness became more commonplace. And we are now entering the age of custom wellness, largely driven by celebrities' obsession with anti-aging and living longer, trickling down to the mainstream. If there's one word you're going to hear in 2025, it's longevity. Not only do we want to live fuller, more satisfying lives, we want to live as long as possible.
In pursuit of staying abreast of the fascinating world of wellness, we spoke with four local experts on trends they're seeing clients loving and asking more of.
Dr. Christine Salem, owner of Precision Health & Wellness, encourages people to get their labs done and schedule a consultation at the beginning of the year in order to get off on the right foot come January 1.
"Taking care of your health starts with awareness," Dr. Salem says. "And there’s no better way to kick off the new year than by understanding what’s going on in your body."
Dr. Salem says red light therapy, a non-invasive treatment that uses red or near-infrared light to stimulate cells and promote healing, is one of her favorite tools for boosting cellular health and supporting skin and energy.
"Bringing the Sciton Laser into our practice has been one of the most exciting milestones at Precision Health & Wellness," Dr. Salem

says. "Patients fall in love with their skin through treatments like the BBL Hero for brightening and evening tone and the Halo Laser for rejuvenation and texture improvement."
Other key components of longevity offered at Precision Health & Wellness include Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, medically assisted weight loss and NAD+.
Rebecca Milnes, owner of The Avenu Wellness Center, has seen firsthand how much suffering (physical, mental and psychological) can be alleviated by the innovative treatments offered at The Avenu, finding the hyperbaric oxygen chamber particularly beneficial for post-stroke and post-concussion repair.
According to Milnes, the oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber is pressurized, which alters the way it is delivered in the body.
"Pressurized oxygen is able to travel deeper in the body than through the normal respiration system," Milnes explains. "The pressurization also increases the amount of energy produced by the body."
Coupled with diminishing pain, a hyperbaric oxygen session accelerates healing of tissue and bone, creates new stem cells and helps with nerve regeneration.
In addition to anti-aging remedies and energy-boosting therapies, staying physically active is, of course, a big piece of the health puzzle that can't be ignored.
Megan and Pete Yeh, owners of Starting Strength Columbus, say that exercise is so important that "you must make fitness a priority by scheduling it into your calendar and ensuring family support." Further, the two encourage to focus on workouts that provide measurable health benefits like strength gains (lifting more weight) "rather than just feeling sore or sweaty."
The duo explains that fitness trends like focusing solely on cardio
or low-fat diets are "finally fading," which is a result of the consumer taking a more informed approach to what matters for overall health and longevity.
"Now, more than ever, there is a greater emphasis on self-care, healthy lifestyle choices and muscle-building as a solution to obesity and age-related frailty," they say. "Strength training empowers individuals to take control of their lives and face difficulties with greater confidence."
The key to a successful wellness program no matter what your workout or treatment of choice is? Consistency.

Mocktails have been gaining popularity the last several years due to consumers' growing interest in their health and overall wellbeing. Whether you're participating in Dry January or exploring a world sans alcohol, these alcohol free beverages could be a good place to start.
This past November, Northwest Columbus Lifestyle hosted a Sip & Savor event at CoHatch Worthington where 40 guests gathered to sample five alcohol-free spirits. Below are the alternatives and reactions from the guest list:
Flavors of orange blossom, Victoria rhubarb and charred grapefruit give this award-winning aperitif substitute aromatic, bold flavors that mix beautifully in a Negroni or Spritz.

Seedlip Garden 108
A clear spirit with complex green flavors like garden peas, hay, spearmint rosemary and thyme, this pairs well with club soda and lemon.

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.
Combine:
• 1 cup wheat flour
• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled
• 2 cups oats
• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts
The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 2 tablespoons chia seeds
• 2/3 cup raisins
• Optional: chocolate chips as desired
• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.
Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.
Add this mixture slowly to combine:
• 2 eggs
• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter
• 1/2 cup honey
• 1 banana
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
