Curating Tiki Vibes

I'm not going to lie, I fangirled a bit when writing our cover story for this month's issue.

My husband and I got into tiki during the pandemic. Like many people, we were home a lot and trying to figure out how to de-stress and have fun within the confines of our walls. My husband, Tyler, has always been obsessed with Hawaii and attempted to curate island vibes in our Missouri home with a custom Spotify playlist. Trying to bring my own expertise to the table, I attempted to match the mood with cocktails.

This evolved a lot over the years, with my husband starting a Hawaiian shirt collection, us creating elaborate mocktails for our kids and we also got into collecting tiki glassware (which is not a cheap hobby). Now, if one of us is having a particularly stressful day, we will dub it "Aloha Friday" (no matter what day of the week), turn on the island playlist and make a drink. To us, tiki is mostly about the vibes.

So when I stumbled upon The Black Flamingo tiki bar on Instagram, after I got over my jealousy at the Waterman's incredible space, I knew they would make the perfect feature for a Northland story. Touring their home bar was such an amazing experience – it's such a cozy and cool space. And they made me a really amazing drink, too — you can get the recipe towards the back of the magazine!

To match the tiki style of The Black Flamingo, we also profile the vacationwear brand, Team Cocktail, new to Zona Rosa this month. I think I know where Tyler is getting his next Hawaiian shirt. Then, we stop by Larry's Nursery in Riverside, because if you're not all about the tiki style, you can at least bring tropical vibes to your home with plants.

I had fun putting our style issue together this month, and I hope you have just as much fun reading it!

Until next month,

September 2025

WHERE WHERE HAPPY HOUR HAPPY HOUR NEVER ENDS NEVER ENDS

Meet the Kansas City brand turning vacation vibes into a full-blown lifestyle — one soft shirt at a time

Vacation. Imagine the breeze blowing through your hair. A drink in your hand. Nowhere to be and all day to get there. Now imagine you’re wearing the softest shirt you own. Team Cocktail’s shirts are softer.

In 2009, Lyndsey Fliehs, along with her brother Trey Fliehs and a group of friends (self-named Team Cocktail), traveled to Barbados. They came home with the idea to trademark the name and start making their own high-quality, fun drinking shirts due to the lack of good-quality options. Their creations started getting a lot of attention.

“We would go on these cruises every January and make our own funny shirts, lanyards, koozies and whatever. We would run into people on the cruise ship, and they'd be like, ‘How do I become part of the team?’”

Lyndsey, Trey and his wife Becah, along with their cousin Brandy Robbins and

other family members, launched their website in December 2010 and are taking the industry by storm. What began in Lyndsey’s basement in Olathe has spread nationwide. The business has grown from online-only sales for over a decade to having multiple storefronts, with plans to expand further.

The secret to their success is evident in their growing customer base. The quality of their clothes is truly remarkable. It only takes one touch to get you hooked.

However, their product isn’t just clothing and accessories - it’s the lure of being a part of this free-spirited, fun-loving culture. The clothes are sometimes simply the ticket price for a greater adventure.

The short of it is if you buy from them, you are a part of Team Cocktail, which means you’re invited to the next cruise!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER

“That's how it started, and that’s how we continue to do it,” says Lyndsey. “We've gotten so many customers around the country, too. Literally, people from Alaska to Florida go with us.”

In addition, Team Cocktail customers have organically formed something of a kinship with each other. They run into each other around the country or on vacation somewhere in the world. After recognizing one another’s vacation wear, they often start up conversations. Once you know the quality and style of Team Cocktail, you know.

These are often the same customers who send in photos to Team Cocktail and are featured on the walls and slideshow in the store. Yes, that’s right — if you send in your vacay photos to Lyndsey and the Team, you become part of the in-store narrative of the growing Team Cocktail!

If you want to join in the fun, the next cruise is scheduled for February 2026. So, get your Vacation Tuxedo on and be ready for a good time because you’re traveling with professional happy-makers.

Nursery gives tips on finding the right plant for your home

Turn Over a New Leaf

ARTICLE BY REILLY ATKINS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH SCHREINER
Larry's

As we creep towards the cooler, darker months of fall and winter, we’re all looking for ways to bring warmth, life, and color into our space. Styling your home with houseplants can help you create a tropical escape from the harsh cold outside your door.

For new houseplant parents, selecting the right varieties can be daunting. Finding the right specimen for your light levels, watering needs, and tolerance for pests can be difficult. Thankfully, Lora Bonnot, manager at Larry’s Nursery in Riverside, gave us insight into the best options for every space and style.

LOW-MAINTENANCE MARVELS

For the beginner plant parent, Lora suggests varieties that don’t require much light or water. Sanseverias, often called “snake plants” or “mother-inlaw’s tongue,” and ZZ Plants fit the bill. These plants thrive on neglect and are the perfect plants for lower-light areas in your home or office. These low-fuss favorites only require occasional watering–about once a month or when the soil is completely dry.

Sanseveria is particularly diverse in appearance, coming in many colors and shapes. While for most, these plants conjure images of sturdy foliage growing tall, varieties like the ‘starfish’ sanseveria grow out in sculptural, cylindrical shapes. In areas of the home like corners and bathrooms, the sansevieria can thrive. Even better, they purify the air, making sure you breathe easy all year long.

A POP OF COLOR

Did you think all houseplants were the same boring shade of green? It’s a common misconception. Avid houseplant collectors prize the philodendron for its lively color variations – pinks, oranges, lime greens, and even silvery tones. Philodendrons are happy to climb, drape, and trail across your home, and are avid growers when they’re happy in the spot they’re in.

“Get a start this month on building your indoor jungle–you’ll thank your past self when the dreary winter greys come in full force.”

Varieties like the ‘Prince of Orange’, ‘Pink Princess’, and ‘Silver Sword’ can brighten your space with their unique hues. They’re happiest in bright, indirect light, so they’ll need to be placed right near a window in your home. Their bright colors add a splash of color and a bit of drama to every bookshelf or windowsill in your space. While some varieties climb or trail, others grow in upright clusters from a strong, central stem. With so many types to choose from, there’s a philodendron to add color to every corner of your home.

SHOW-STOPPERS

Have you ever walked into a space and been “wow-ed” by a particularly large, fabulous plant? Large tropicals make incredible, grandiose focal points for any room.

Birds of paradise have long, angular leaves and can grow over 6ft tall. Their clean lines lend themselves particularly well to minimalist, modern spaces, where their foliage can shine. Birds of paradise require a sunny spot and like to be watered when the first few inches of soil are dry. When they like the place they’re in, they’re vigorous growers, and will frequently put out gorgeous, architectural leaves.

Alocasia look prehistoric. Their broad, crinkly create a whimsical atmosphere. Some varieties of the alocasia can grow up to ten feet tall, with leaves almost as wide. They love sun and water, but thanks to their rhizome-based root systems, they can tolerate some underwatering. Alocasias command the spaces they’re in, making them the perfect option if you’re looking for a plant to anchor a room.

Visiting a nursery like Larry’s Nursery opens the world of possibilities when it comes to houseplants. No matter the shape, size, or color you’re looking for, they’ll have what you’re looking for. Being presented with so many options can be daunting, but the knowledgeable staff are happy to point you in the right direction. If you’re lucky, you may even spot Janice, the resident nursery cat, napping amongst the foliage.

A tip from Lora on narrowing your selection? Start by choosing a pot you think will look nice with your decor, and pair it with a plant that fits. It’s like having a piece of your home with you while you’re picking out your plant.

Get a start this month on building your indoor jungle–you’ll thank your past self when the dreary winter greys come in full force.

You can find plants, pots, and pet Janice at Larry’s Nursery, located at 2501 NW Platte Road in Riverside and online at larrysnursery.com

Vertical Gardens Are Moving Indoors

The Stylish Home Design Trend That Will Have You Saying, “Oh, Grow Up!”

Humans have always had a penchant for propagation. Since King Nebuchadnezzar II built The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the original Seven Wonders of the World) in the sixth century BC, artful gardening has fascinated folks. Today, there is a growing trend (pun intended) in home design that echoes that need to nurture, albeit on a much smaller scale. It goes by many names. Environmentalists refer to them as “green walls” or “ecowalls.” Gardeners may prefer “garden wall” or “edible wall.” Designers have dubbed them “statement walls.” But for our purposes here, we will refer to them as the architects do — as “vertical gardens.”

A vertical garden is essentially a wall, or part of a wall, that is covered with plants growing in soil or another type of medium. Though they began as outdoor architectural attractions, these wonderful wallscapes are popping up indoors, and their benefits go beyond a fancy facade.

The most obvious benefit of a vertical garden is the visual beauty it brings to the room. Its unexpected presence adds surprise and drama, while its living tenants, with their varied textures and individual personalities, add energy and a bit of charm as well.

Beyond the aesthetic advantages, living walls have health benefits. They improve the air quality by adding humidity, trapping dust particles, and absorbing many harmful gasses, replacing them with oxygen. They can help with cardiovascular issues like blood pressure as well as breathing problems associated with allergies and asthma. Because they lend a sense of calm and well being, they can even improve concentration, elevate mood, and reduce stress.

Because these living walls are becoming more popular, demand is driving the price down, making them more affordable for the average homeowner. Kits are available and most feature an integrated water delivery system which makes them low maintenance as well.

As for which types of plants to grow, succulents, mosses, grasses, and ferns are all good choices. Tropical vines work well also, as they can trail down or climb up. Pothos and philodendrons have great climbing capabilities, are fast growing, and low maintenance. The design possibilities are as endless as the plant combinations. So bring the outside in! Simply choose a location with bright, indirect light, and turn your wall into a living piece of artwork with a vertical garden.

OLD WALL, NEW TRICKS

HANG UP THE OLD WAY AND TRY A GALLERY WALL HANGING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL

The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store.

• A collection of frames and artwork.

• A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste:

• Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance.

• Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity.

• Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.

INSTALLATION TIPS:

01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE:

Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT:

Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART:

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position easily.

04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY:

Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.

Oasis BASEMENT

The Black Flamingo home tiki bar is a full-on tropical escape

PHOTOGRAPHY

In tornado alley, a basement is a must. And if you have to go down to the basement for the inevitable tornado warning, Jordan and Morgan Waterman’s house is the place to do it. Because if you have to shelter from the storm — well, wouldn’t you want to do it in a tiki bar?

Pull up to Jordan and Morgan’s 1920s house in their quiet Northtown neighborhood, and you wouldn’t suspect

anything out of the ordinary. A step into their living room gives a peek at their affection for tiki, with a bit of Polynesian flair on the walls, but it’s nothing over-the-top. Even as you step into their backyard, you wonder, “where the heck is this tiki bar?” and then you’re led down the unassuming concrete steps into a true oasis.

Jordan has rented his home in North Kansas City since 2018, but the tiki bar didn’t start to take shape until his favorite bar closed. TikiCat, an award-winning tiki bar in the basement of HopCat in Westport, shuttered in 2020, and Jordan, eager to recreate the same feel of TikiCat in his own home, bought some of the fixtures and started converting his basement space with the approval of his landlord.

The space, dubbed The Black Flamingo — Underground Oasis, has evolved a lot over the past five years, and is so impressive, it’s even featured in a book, “Polynesiacs: Tiki at Home.” The book by Tom Jaynes, or “Tiki Tom-Tom,” spotlights impressive home tiki bars across the country, and the Waterman’s space is showcased alongside home bars of all shapes and sizes.

The Waterman’s basement is small, but it packs a punch of impressively layered decor, so your eye is constantly finding new things at which to marvel.

“The best compliment you ever get in tiki or collecting, I would say, is, ‘Oh, you know, last time I was here, I didn’t see you had that,’” says Jordan. “And I’m like, ‘Oh, I had that for four years, and, you know, you touched it last time, but you don’t remember because there’s 19 new things around it.’”

Many tiki spaces have their own spin, whether it’s clean, opulent spaces that look like a Trader Vic’s restaurant or cluttered spots with flotsam and jetsam everywhere. The Waterman’s space has a Midcentury flair, filled with vintage pieces like a Witco magazine stand, 1970s swag lamps and, of course, Jordan’s prized tiki mug collection. He also loves pop culture references, and if you look closely, you’ll see the creature from the black lagoon or Sleestaks from the cult movie “Land of the Lost.”

As with many niche obsessions that involve collecting, there’s a big community of folks who love tiki, even if the definition of what is actually “tiki” can vary from person to person. Jordan, along with other tiki aficionados in Kansas City, has cultivated

that community locally, even if the Midwest isn’t at the forefront of people’s minds when they think of tiki spots.

“I think it’s cool to see that even though we’re kind of a desert of tiki, we’re really not,” says Jordan. “You have to look to find it. It’s not going to be a Google search. You have to go to the rum tastings. You have to look for it.”

This September, Jordan will help host the third annual Lei Away event, of which he’s a co-founder. The 3-day event celebrates all things tiki, featuring parties, vendors, seminars and more. Jordan is excited that Kansas City is continuing to make a name for itself in the tiki world, and hopes to continue to foster that.

The Waterman’s Black Flamingo space is proof that no matter where you are — whether it’s flyover country, a place where there’s no ocean or palm tree in sight, a dark basement, or, in their case, all three, tiki is truly a state of mind and a spirit that can be appreciated anywhere, anytime.

Join Jordan at Lei Away in Kansas City from September 26-28. You can find tickets and more information at theleiaway.com. You can also find The Black Flamingo on Instagram at @the_black_flamingo_nkc.

FLAMINGO

MAI TAI

If you stop by the Waterman’s Black Flamingo — Underground Oasis in Northtown, chances are they’ll serve you this drink. Tiki isn’t all about cocktails, but they’re definitely a part of the experience. Mai Tais can sometimes be a divisive topic among tiki aficionados, and this one adheres more closely to the original Mai Tai, meaning it’s more rum-focused and doesn’t include pineapple juice, so it isn’t overly sweet. Careful — it’s a stiff one!

BLACK FLAMINGO HOUSE

MAI TAI RECIPE:

DIRECTIONS:

Prep shaker with ice and add lime juice, Curaçao, orgeat, Appleton estate and Planteray 3 star rum. Shake vigorously.

“Dirty dump” shaker contents into a glass and fill with more Sonic ice. Top with a floater of Planteray OFTD Overproof, fresh mint and lime shell.
