Thank you for being here!

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away," - Maya Angelou

As we begin to close out the year, it's easy to get caught up in the fast-paced nature of the holidays. We want to get everything done as quickly as possible so we can then take a break. But instead of speeding up what if we slowed down? I love taking this time to reflect on all the things that make my life rich. That can look like savoring a warm cup of coffee with my animals or laughing around the table with my friends and family. No matter what, I like to be present with everything I do.

I love this time of year because I get to do the two things that matter the most to me: eat great food and laugh with my family. Of course, we do that all year, but there is truly something special about coming together in this season. (Hint: it's because of Thanksgiving food!)

Since it is November, it is only fitting that we share tips, stories, and more about giving back and being thankful. We worked with some incredible local businesses to help you figure out the best plans for a Friends-giving this year. The chef at The Bartonville Store also put his spin on the owner's family recipes. Try it out for yourself! And, our team was lucky to speak with the Community Clothes Closet out in Justin, an incredible non-profit that is for the people, by the people.

As we head into Thanksgiving, I hope you’re able to pause, soak in the present, and hold tight to the people and moments that matter most. Here’s to a season filled with gratitude, connection, and maybe a slice (or two) of pie.

With warmth and thanks,

November 2025

FINDING HOME

Coming home to Teresa’s House Assisted Living and Memory Care Village.

Founded by Teresa Whittington, RN BSN, and Godwin Dixon, Teresa’s House Assisted Living and Memory Care Village was born from a desire to provide the best care for seniors in an environment that feels like home. From their experience working in senior living communities, Godwin and Teresa

noticed that residents struggled with the transition because most places felt more like a facility than a home. They designed Teresa’s House with special attention to details that make residents feel at home, because they are home.

“We build homes, but they are homes designed for senior care. Each 16-room home has everything you have at home and more. The bathrooms have wide doors, handrails, and no-barrier showers. There are lights to help at night, and for our dementia patients, we have specialized wardrobes that cue them through the dressing process, helping retain their dignity,” explains Godwin. “There are no long hallways, and the kitchens are open so you can see and smell the food being prepared and served. It's just a beautiful, warm home environment.”

As residents settle into the homey feel, families have the assurance that if needed, help is always close by. With emphasis on quality care, Teresa’s House exceeds state requirements by having nurses on-site around the clock, seven days a week, state-certified staff passing medications, and a high ratio of certified nursing assistants and care staff per resident.

“We love that staff members stay in the same house and don’t rotate. It creates a familiarity for residents that is comforting to the residents as well as to me,” shares Laura Bakken, whose father is a resident. “I also love that I can call my father’s house and someone always answers and is willing to help.”

The Activity Center, designed to prompt memories of the 1960s/70s, is the hub of activities for residents that are both engaging and therapeutic. “Half is a CONTINUED >

working vintage kitchen with checkerboard tile floors where we do big group activities, and the other half is a man cave, set up as a garage with a 1965 Mustang, a sports bar, a workshop, and everything that brings back great memories,” shares Godwin. “It’s fun for all our residents, but it is very therapeutic for our residents struggling with dementia.”

Deciding to move a loved one into a senior living community can be difficult, but current resident, Laura, found the team at Teresa’s House to be supportive and helpful. “They were not only respectful of my dad, but they

were respectful of us too,” she shares. “It was a huge challenge and a pivotal point in our family, but I feel like cognitively, physically, and mentally, my dad has made great strides. As a family, we are comforted to know that he is in a safe place where they are taking good care of him.”

Teresa’s House, which has locations in McKinney and Argyle, offers Respite Stays, which allow prospective residents to join the community for 13 or 30 days to see if the neighborhood is a good fit. For more information, visit teresashouse.com or call 940-291-9522.

YOUR GUIDE TO HOST THE PERFECT FRIENDSGIVING

Local businesses that are sure to make your Friendsgiving memorable.

One of the best holidays of the year is upon us — Friendsgiving! If you’ve never celebrated Friendsgiving before, this is your sign to give it a try. Yes, traditional holidays are often centered around family, but what about the family you choose yourself? Spending time with your relatives is important and always will be, but carving out space to gather with your closest friends will leave you feeling full of love and life you’ll want to make it a yearly tradition.

If you don’t have a Friendsgiving to attend this year, consider this your challenge: be the host. Hosting can feel like a daunting task, but hopefully, we can take some of the weight off your shoulders. We have gathered some amazing local businesses that will take your Friendsgiving to the next level!

1. First things first, fall decorations! One piece of decor we think is a must is a centerpiece. One of our favorite ways to incorporate a bold centerpiece is with floral arrangements. Floral arrangements are a great way to spruce up your space, but I feel they get slightly neglected outside of the spring and summer months. Fall-themed bouquets are stunning and will bring so much warmth and life into your home. We recommend going to Lulu’s of Argyle! Lulu’s can create vibrant and on-theme floral arrangements for the fall. We believe these floral arrangements will take the stage at your party! They can also deliver, so even if you can't be in two places at once, your flowers can!

2. Another key component of a great Friendsgiving is, of course, the food. Something my friends and I do is a potluck dinner for Friendsgiving. I’ve found this is not only helpful for the host, but it’s also a great way to feel connected to your friends. This alone will create great memories, and who knows, you may find your new favorite dish! As the host, a great way to easily provide something yummy for your guests is by getting a charcuterie board. You can’t go wrong with a good charcuterie board, and it's the perfect appetizer to offer as people arrive and chat. We recommend checking out Boards & Beyond by Trish for gorgeous charcuterie options. If you don’t have time to cook with all your other hosting responsibilities, Trish and her delectable boards have you covered.

3. Speaking of yummy food, no party is complete without a treat at the end of the night! I don’t know about you, but I always look forward to the desserts around the

holiday season. Not only do I get to indulge in my family’s traditional desserts that I know and love, but I also adore trying my loved ones' traditional Thanksgiving desserts. To save you the hassle and mess of baking right before you have company visiting, head down to Everett & Elaine to pick up a delicious pie before your party. Everett & Elaine have several handcrafted pies to choose from (which all look delicious), and if you’re not a pie person, they also have gourmet cookies for you to choose from!

4. For those who have a passion for fashion, we didn’t want to leave you without a new boutique to browse. For some, the best part of fall is the fall outfits. If you want to find some new fall items for your closet, or a brand new outfit for your Friendsgiving party, stop by River Bleu in Northlake! Shopping local is a great option; not only will you be supporting those in your community, but you can find unique pieces to add to your wardrobe.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful. To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand.

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh

Groceries

• Clean your home completely. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go. Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

COMMUNITY CLOTHES CLOSET, PROVIDING AMPLE SUPPORT FOR LOCAL FAMILIES.

Serving Local Families With Compassion

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANO
Staff and volunteers of CCC.

During the holiday season, our thoughts often turn to supporting local organizations and families in the community. Since 2012, Community Clothes Closet (CCC) has been providing clothing to families in Denton and surrounding counties at no charge. Each month, CCC serves over 170 families, and since its founding, has provided over 1 million pieces of clothing to local families, all through the support and donations of those in the community.

“Joanna Johnson and I have a huge passion for our community,” shares Gwen St Clair, CCC’s Executive Coordinator. “Our mission is a very simple one; to provide free clothing to families in our communities so that they can have clothing to wear to school, work, and in general life and feel proud about it.”

A recent initiative of CCC is to bring awareness of clothing insecurity within the local community and what that means for families. “Clothing insecurity is very real. It is students who skip class because they don't have clean clothes, parents who choose between a meal or a coat, and job seekers passed over because they don't look the part,” shares Joanna Johnson, Executive Director. “We at the Community Clothes Closet believe that everyone deserves dignity, confidence, and warmth, no matter their circumstances.”

An annual program CCC hosts is the Back-to-School event, where each child receives new socks, underwear, and a pair of new shoes. The organization spends close to $20,000 to purchase the items. An important aspect of the program is bringing pride and joy to kids by providing a pair of new shoes still in the box, which may seem insignificant to some, but makes a huge impact on the kids.

“Shoes in a box for a child means that they are brand new and not something that was picked up on a shelf that has been worn,” explains Gwen. “Kids really respond to that, and we have heard them say, ‘Look, mom, it's in a box!’”

In addition to the outreach of providing free clothing, CCC has opened The Store at CCC, which sells new items that have been donated by patrons and from local retail stores with overflow inventory. The proceeds from The Store provide additional support for the daily operations of CCC.

As a nonprofit organization, CCC relies on volunteers for its operation. Volunteer opportunities for adults, students

seeking community service hours, church and school groups, and families who want to serve together include sorting and organizing clothing donations as well as assisting clients on the days CCC is open.

Both clothing and monetary donations allow CCC to successfully serve the community. Clothing donations of clean and gently used, as well as new clothing, in all sizes can be made using the blue donation boxes located on the CCC campus.

CCC holds several fundraising events throughout the year, with Cinderella Night: A Magical Evening coming up on November 24th from 5:00-7:00 pm. This boutique shopping experience will include a silent auction, online Louis Vuitton purse raffle, and the Glass Slipper Challenge, which promises an enchanted gift to the person who fits the glass slipper… creating a perfect opportunity to shop for a cause.

For more information on the upcoming Cinderella Night, ways to volunteer, and opportunities to donate, follow @justincommunityclothescloset on Facebook, email communityclothescloset31@gmail.com, or call 817-291-8872. Community Clothes Closet is located at 117 West 6th Street in Justin.

TRADITIONS MADE ANEW

The Bartonville Store - “The Store with more”.

The Bartonville Store is no stranger to rich history and tradition. The Store, selected by the Barton family, dates back to 1882, as the beginning of the town. The Store was a convenience store throughout the 1900s, and as time went on, it was used for countless town meetings and events over the years. In 2018, the House family purchased this historic building and has since converted it into a live music restaurant

and bar that is still a staple for social gatherings. The owner, Tim, has shared with us the importance of keeping history alive through The Store, as well as let us in on a traditional family recipe.“There are some things that just can’t be reproduced, and both 'The Store' and my grandma Matilda’s Mac & Cheese recipe are worth keeping alive for generations to come,” shares Tim.

Owner of 'The Store', Tim, with Chef George.

Tim and The Store’s chef, George, have worked together to create a fusion of their cultures. George has taken Tim’s family recipe and merged his Colombian background, similarly to how Tim has kept the original integrity of The Store while evolving it into something new. “I want to keep

the simplicity of the original dish, but add just a touch of other flavors to intrigue your taste buds. What I came up with is a marriage of two cultures, their traditions and flavors,” says George. Try these recipes out for yourself, then swing by The Store to tell Tim and George how it turned out!

‘THE

STORE’ & GRANDMA MATILDA’S MAC & CHEESE

Serving Size: 10-12 people  Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients:

• Elbow macaroni

• Fresh, sharp cheddar cheese

• 2 eggs

• Milk

• Real butter

• Salt and ground pepper

George’s Additions:

• Corn cake base

• Jalapeno bits

• Pork rinds

Directions:

Boil macaroni until soft, not fully cooked. Rinse macaroni with cold water and place a layer in the bottom of the casserole dish. Layer shredded cheese on top, and repeat the layering process until the macaroni is gone. While layering, add lots of salt and ground pepper throughout. Mix 2 eggs with milk, pour on top, and add butter to the middle. Preheat the oven to 325° and bake uncovered for about 45 minutes (until golden brown).

To incorporate George's spin, place a corn cake base before layering macaroni and cheese. While layering, add in bits of jalapeño throughout the dish. Finally, top off with crushed pork rinds to get that extra bit of crunch and flavor. Now, enjoy!

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
