Long Live the Days of Summer

Summertime in Texas is a welcome invitation to slow down and relish in the beauty around us. From early mornings before the hustle and bustle of the day begins to starlit nights that glisten off the lake, summer brings back a sense of nostalgia from our youth.

I remember long days at the pool with my friends, enjoying late evenings as the sun started to go down, and cookouts at our neighbors’ houses. There is a sense of nostalgia for the simplicity of our youth that comes with the summer months. Things like catching lightning bugs, watching the fireworks for Fourth of July, and taking off for a weekend road trip are forever imprinted in my memory.

An unspoken rule for this time of year is the amount of self care needed to be summer ready. An appointment with Hair Today Gone Tomorrow Electrolysis or Northlake HydroColonic will help you feel your best before and after that well-deserved beach vacation.

Want to enjoy some fishing without the hustle and bustle of boats buzzing by? Chat with Ramon Alcala at Ramon’s Hair Designs for the best fishing locations and tips. Or how about finding the perfect spot for live music, elevated flatbreads and small plates, and native wines? Two Brothers Winery has a full slate of summer specials that can serve as a date night or an evening with the family.

Whatever adventures you embark on this summer, we hope the stories in these pages inspire you to enjoy something new in our community. Cheers!

Sipping Wine for Summertime

Two Brothers Winery gears up for plenty of events and activities this summer

Over the last few years, Two Brothers Winery has served as a place to gather, not only to enjoy local wines, but to nosh on high-end small bites, listen to live music, and relax with loved ones. This summer, the winery continues to offer opportunities to connect with old friends and meet new ones through a variety of special events and activities.

One of these fun occasions that excites co-owner Donna Kirkwood the most is the winery’s annual Christmas in July celebration.

“This year, we are making it a full month-long event. We will have specialty drinks each week and are also bringing back our Christmas Cheer wine for the month of July. It's a cranberry Syrah that is on the sweeter side that people really enjoy during the holidays,” she said.

“My favorite part about the Christmas wine is that my husband created a set of labels a couple years ago that represent the Christ story, starting with the birth of Christ and the Wise Men. On the back of each label, it tells a little bit about that portion of the story that leads to Jesus turning water into wine.”

Other events at the winery include live music on Thursdays and some Saturdays, monthly BINGO nights, and themed trivia nights created out of a partnership with the Keller Library.

“It has been a lot of fun to see people come in and work together by participating in Trivia Night,” shared Kirkwood. “They meet new people because

they are sitting at the same table and are building friendships. I love that the library is doing events like this by partnering with small businesses.”

For those interested in a more in-depth wine experience, Two Brothers Winery offers a Wine Club. In addition to retail savings on wine, the club meets quarterly for a special weekend event that runs from  Friday through Sunday.

“We provide food and live music for the weekends,” said Kirkwood. “It’s great to get to see all of our members. They are able to come in, bring their one guest with them, have a glass of wine, eat food, and just come and enjoy a little bit of time at the winery.”

The winery also offers a special area called the Fermentation Room that is available for private gatherings and celebrations. The room is perfect for customers looking for a more intimate experience with family and friends.

“The room comfortably seats about 32 people,” Kirkwood explained. “We've hosted birthday parties, small wedding parties, and even groups who just want a place to be able to come play games.

We've also worked with nonprofit organizations to provide a place for their meetings.”

Recently, Two Brothers Winery expanded the menu to include the return of their delicious flatbread pizzas. Now, in addition to enjoying wine with appetizers and charcuterie boards, customers can have a culinary experience with dinner, as well.

“We want to be a place where couples can come and enjoy a nice evening together,” Kirkwood said. “We also have a dog-friendly patio and a family-friendly

environment where kids are welcome, which may not be something everyone knows. We’re not a bar, so we don’t have an age requirement and we’re happy to make the kids a cheese pizza so that everyone can enjoy the night.”

To explore all that Two Brothers Winery has to offer, visit twobrotherswinery.com, call 817-541-WINE, or visit the winery located at 110 Lamar St. in Keller. Some events require reservations or tickets, and those details can be found on the events tab of the website.

Two Brothers Winery is offering a variety of fun events and specials this summer, including:

• New menu items, such as artisan flatbreads, pretzels with homemade sauces, and other small bites

• Homegrown wines that are fermented on site, including a delightful pecan merlot

• Themed trivia nights and live music

• Christmas in July, which will feature specialty wines, drinks and more

CLEANSING THE BODY, Cleansing the Soul

NORTHLAKE HYDROCOLONIC TAKES A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO FEELING SUMMER READY
ARTICLE BY GABRIELLE BAILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANO

Sometimes, the human holds on to built-up negative bacteria and toxins in the gut that aren’t always easy to remove. With summer here, it’s hard to feel comfortable in stylish warm-weather clothes and bathing suits when the body is bloated and sluggish.

Kristen Flanagan, the owner and founder of Northlake HydroColonic, says a safe, clean and effective way to rid the body of toxins and aid with gastrointestinal problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome and constipation, is to receive a hydrocolonic.

Flanagan personally has felt the benefits of having colon hydrotherapy. She has worked in healthcare for nearly 25 years and, after taking care of her grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s Disease, and her father, who was diagnosed with colon cancer, decided to help maintain her health by adding hydrocolonics and infrared sauna sessions to her regimen.

While she noticed changes in her gut health, Flanagan also saw how flushing out toxins had an overall effect on her entire body.

“The colonic system works all over,” Flanagan explained. “The largest organ on our body is the skin. After your first session, you will see a difference in your skin. During the summer, you’re out in the sun and eating food at barbecues. A hydrocolonic is beneficial as far as detoxing and helping your skin heal from sun exposure.”

A hydrocolonic uses filtered water to gently flush out the colon and get rid of waste that has accumulated in the body. Once a hydrocolonic removes toxins, the liver and kidneys function better and are more efficient in filtering waste, leading people to feel better and have more energy.

“I want our setting to feel like, ‘This is your time.’”

Flanagan created a soothing, refreshing environment at her practice to allow her clients to feel relaxed during their sessions. Though the procedure seems intimidating, Flanagan ensures that clients feel comfortable and at ease during their appointments.

“I want our setting to feel like, ‘This is your time,’” Flanagan said. “Just like when someone goes and gets their nails done or when anybody goes to get their hair done. That is your time.”

For first-time clients, Flanagan gives them a tour of her practice, which boasts of state-ofthe-art Angel of Water systems that are made here in Texas. Clients are reclined comfortably in a large, sterilized tub and can spend anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes receiving their therapy at a very slow, gentle rate.

Once the hydrocolonic is finished, Flanagan recommends using the far infrared sauna for the most successful results.

“The infrared sauna uses certain wavelengths to penetrate all the way down to the cell, even down to the mitochondria inside. It works with the hydrocolonic to heal your cells,” Flanagan explained.

“There are different programs that people can choose from and the sauna programs itself for that selection. There's a weight loss program. There is a cardio program. There's an

anti-aging muscle recovery. Chromatherapy is also involved, which uses the lights to change the colors for someone’s chakras for people who like to meditate.”

Other advantages of hydrocolonic and far infrared therapies include weight loss, improved heart health, boosted immunity and anti-aging benefits.

“The clients who come in for aesthetic reasons make me laugh,” Flanagan said, laughing herself. “They say they need the bikini stomach because they're going to Belize. And when they come back from Belize, they say, ‘I need to get rid of everything I just ate.’”

Depending on a client’s needs, individuals can receive a hydrocolonic as often as once a week. Flanagan recommends hydrating and eating lightly before and after each session to keep the gut balanced and maintain the best effects. She offers hydrocolonic and sauna packages that cover all cleansing needs for the body, inside and out.

Northlake HydroColonic uses Vagaro Pay Later, Affirm Pay Later and takes FSA and HSA cards. Veterans receive 10% off of all services and packages, as well. Call 469-875-0322 or email info@NorthlakeNHC.com to schedule an appointment.

A Time to Reflect

RAMON ALCALA USES FISHING TO BECOME A BETTER BUSINESS OWNER

BY

Ramon Alcala, the owner of Ramon’s Hair Design, approaches life with the philosophy that the best way to understand something is to experience it personally. In both the professional and personal aspects of his life, he likes to immerse himself in what he’s doing, study it, and decide on the most effective approach.

Alcala sees his career as a hobby and takes his hobby, specifically fishing, as seriously as his career.

The roots of Alcala’s love of fishing can be traced back to his family’s farm, where he spent time as a kid fishing in the family’s pond. The hobby stayed with him, and his fishing locations and expertise have grown over the years. With that experience, Alcala has found parallels between doing hair and fishing, making the two intricately intertwined for him.

“I’ve been doing hair for 45 years and I really enjoy it,” he shared. “I spend a lot of time listening to my clients helping them solve their problems and showing them how to care for their hair.

“I’m kind of a nerd in that I like to study things and go one step further than most. Fishing is the same way. I study the water and the fish to know what they're looking for and what I'm doing wrong, too, so that I can be successful in catching fish.”

Alcala integrates his love for electronics with fishing by using underwater mapping technology on his boat to locate great fishing spots at Grapevine Lake in North Texas. He's able to study the patterns in which the fish move and understands how to entice them to take his bait.

Although he enjoys fishing for largemouth bass, Alcala truly loves the challenge of finding and snagging smallmouth bass.

“I get excited about catching fish, how they feel when you get them on the line, putting them back in the water, and doing it again and again,” he said. “Smallmouth bass are more of a challenge to find and are different characters in the water. They are big time fighters on the line, unlike the largemouths that mainly go docile when hooked. Smallmouths just keep fighting and fighting, trying to get away, and that’s exciting to me.”

In addition to catching fish, Alcala enjoys these moments to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. The simplicity and solitude of being on the water allows Alcala to reflect on the past and look toward the future.

“I often think about my clients and what I could do better for them. I replay my whole day or my whole week and see what I can do better the next time they come in; if I can do something else for them to teach them something or if there is something that I might have forgotten to tell them,” he explained.

“I’m really a quiet guy and I do a lot of talking with my clients throughout the day, so fishing gives me time to be quiet, peaceful, and think.”

Banishing Body Hair for Good

UNLIKE LASER HAIR TREATMENTS, ELECTROLYSIS IS FOR ALL SKIN TYPES

Now that summer is here, many feel the need to constantly shave, wax, or tweeze away their hair to remain smooth during these hotter months. Some might think it's too late for laser hair removal, and that is correct. Laser hair removal is often considered a winter treatment because of how sensitive the skin becomes during the process.

Instead, Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Electrolysis owner Sara Wolfe and her team provide a unique procedure known as electrolysis that works with all skin tones and types.  Electrolysis has been around for nearly 150 years. It dates back to 1876 when ophthalmologist Dr. Charles E. Michael developed a way to cure patients struggling with inverted eyelashes. These days, electrolysis utilizes a device with a small probe that is inserted directly into the hair follicle. A combination of heat and electricity is used to completely remove the follicle. It’s far more comfortable than laser hair removal and, according to Wolfe, is capable of doing what the laser can’t.

“Lasers use light to heat and kill the follicle at the source,” Wolfe explained. “But those lights are attracted to melanin. So, the darker your hair, the more effective the treatment is. That also means, the darker your skin, the more intense the heat and the pain will be. With electrolysis, that is not the case.”

Unlike lasers, electrolysis does not require a certain amount of pigmentation to be effective. It is the only FDAapproved solution for permanent hair removal. Electrolysis can be used to treat unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the body. The common treatment areas include the legs, arms, underarms, upper lip, back and bikini line. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis is not considered a seasonal treatment and can be done year-round.

“Despite their popularity, waxing, threading, sugaring and laser are treatments you will be doing for the rest of your life,” Wolfe said.

Lasers also can encourage hair growth, ultimately reversing the work done to remove it.

Wolfe and her team treat clients who struggle with male-pattern hair growth often associated with some kind of hormonal issue. This is typically seen in women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, which can create a hormonal imbalance that spurs additional hair growth. Unlike other treatments, electrolysis can transform someone’s skin permanently.

“I like to say that laser hair removal is like microwaving a meal and electrolysis is like the crockpot,” Wolfe said, laughing as she explained why it often takes longer to see the permanent results of electrolysis.

She also reminds her clients that hair grows in cycles. While the first treatment appears to eliminate all the hair during the first cycle, new hair can grow back that needs to be addressed.

When it’s time for an appointment, Wolfe recommends patients come in early for a facial to exfoliate and saturate the skin with moisture. This not only improves the efficacy of the treatment but improves the recovery time as well.

With a brand-new location in Roanoke, Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Electrolysis is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Consultations are free for new clients.

“I like to say that laser hair removal is like microwaving a meal and electrolysis is like using the crockpot.”
