For the Ones We Love

Dear North Shore Readers,

There’s something uniquely beautiful about the way our hearts expand to make room for the ones we love—whether they walk on two legs or four. This month, we’re celebrating the joy, chaos and unconditional love that comes from raising kids and caring for our beloved pets.

In our home, our two daughters, Kaira and Nadia, are the light of our lives—and right alongside them is our sweet, furry family member, Rosie, who brings just as much laughter and love to our days. Like many of you, we see our pet not just as a companion, but as a true part of our family. From first words to first walks (yes, even puppy steps!), each milestone is something to cherish.

Our talented staff photographer, Amee McCaughan, beautifully captures these special moments that make family life so meaningful–you’ll see her work graciously on our cover and in a special article about family portraiture in the pages within. This issue is also filled with heartwarming stories and helpful resources that celebrate all things  kids and pets—from expert tips on finding the right childcare to where to dine with your dog this summer. In this issue, we also shine a light on some of the new (and longtime) kids’ training facilities and sports programs, helping shape our children into true athletes–on and off the field. We also hear from a local doctor on how pets help heal trauma and support mental health, and a neighborhood chiropractor offering preventive care to keep our furry companions thriving.

As parents—of children, pets, or both—we find ourselves in awe of how quickly time passes. One moment, you're chasing toddlers and tossing tennis balls, and the next you're watching your teen gain independence or your once-sprightly pup slow down just a bit.

Here’s to the chaos, the cuddles, the milestones, and the memories. Because family is everything.

With gratitude,

August 2025

THE M WORD: UNDERSTANDING MENOPAUSE AND 3 KEY CHANGES IT BRINGS

For many women, the word menopause can feel overwhelming or even taboo. But at Wild Moon Collective, we believe it’s time to change the narrative. Peri-menopause and menopause are a natural phase of life that deserves understanding, care, and support. While every woman’s journey is unique, there are common changes that happen during menopause. Let’s explore three key changes and how to navigate them with confidence and wellness.

1. HORMONAL SHIFTS AND THEIR IMPACT

During peri-menopause & menopause, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels drop significantly. These hormonal changes can lead to:

- Hot Flashes & Night Sweats: Sudden waves of heat can disrupt daily life and sleep.

- Mood Swings: Fluctuations in hormones may cause irritability, anxiety, or feelings of sadness.

- Weight Changes: A slower metabolism often accompanies this phase.

HOW TO MANAGE: Consider Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), natural supplements, or lifestyle changes like consistent exercise and mindfulness practices to help balance your body and mind.

2. SKIN AND HAIR CHANGES

As hormonal levels decline, your skin and hair may go through noticeable transformations:

- Thinning Skin: Skin can become drier, more fragile, and prone to fine lines.

- Hair Thinning or Loss: Many women experience hair shedding or thinning during menopause.

HOW TO MANAGE: Professional skincare treatments like microneedling or hydrating facials can restore moisture and vitality. For hair health, c onsider targeted solutions like scalp microneedling, nutrient-rich vitamin injections or specialized hair restoration treatments.

3. BONE AND MUSCLE HEALTH

Peri-menopause & menopause can also affect your physical strength:

- Bone Density Loss: The risk of osteoporosis increases due to declining estrogen.

- Muscle Weakness: Some women experience reduced muscle mass and strength.

HOW TO MANAGE: Weight-bearing exercises, calcium-rich diets, supplements like vitamin D, and Bioidentical Hormone

Replacement Therapy can assist with bone health and help maintain muscle tone and overall vitality.

EMBRACING THE CHANGE WITH CONFIDENCE

Peri-menopause & menopause is not the end—it’s a new chapter. At Wild Moon Collective, we’re here to support you through every step of this journey with treatments and guidance designed to help you feel empowered, beautiful, and well.

From hormone-balancing therapies to skin rejuvenation, we offer solutions to help you navigate the changes of peri-menopause & menopause with grace and confidence. Remember, this isn’t just ‘the M word’—it’s ‘your time’ to shine.

Let’s embrace this phase of life together. Reach out to schedule a consultation today and discover how we can support your journey through this new chapter in your life.

Capture the Love Now

NORTH SHORE PHOTOGRAPHER AMEE MCCAUGHAN TURNS FAMILY MOMENTS INTO LASTING HEIRLOOMS

Photographer Amee McCaughan hears  every excuse for putting off getting professional family photos: “I just want to lose 10 pounds.” “Maybe when the kids are older.” Her unwavering advice: Don’t wait.

"None of us are guaranteed anything," says McCaughan, a North Shore photographer known for turning joyful moments into heirloom artwork. "Your kids don’t care if you lost five pounds. They just want to see you in the picture.”

For McCaughan, photography is deeply personal. After losing her rescue dog, she launched a series of pet portrait fundraisers benefiting local shelters. Since then, she’s captured dogs mid-pounce, mid-snuggle, and midzoomie—moments that now live on as custom artwork in her clients’  homes.

Pet sessions are relaxed and playful, usually outdoors and tailored to each animal’s quirks. Whether your pup is regal, ridiculous or somewhere in between, McCaughan’s calm, intuitive approach turns chaos into charm.

Family sessions follow the same thoughtful rhythm. Most take place outside, but McCaughan begins by meeting families at home, where she listens to what they hope to capture, offers design expertise and helps plan where the photos might look best—so the final artwork suits both the story and the space.

“I just think, capture the moment,” she says. “There's something so meaningful about having the moments and people you love most on your wall. Time flies and family is everything.”

Part of her session fee is designed to be applied towards custom prints, artwork, albums or wall installations— perfect for creating something lasting and meaningful.

This summer, McCaughan is giving back. For every pet session booked through September by North Shore City Lifestyle readers, she’ll donate $200 to Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook, where her daughter volunteers. Learn more at ameemccaughan.com

THE BEST CHOICE DEPENDS ON TRUST, TIME AND LIFESTYLE

Nanny vs. Daycare

“Nannies aren’t babysitters,” Richards explains. “They know how to meet a child where they are.”

The baby finally naps. Your inbox is on fire. And in the back of your mind, that familiar question returns: Should we hire a nanny or look into day care?

If you’re a North Shore parent with young kids, you’re not short on options—but that doesn’t make the choice easier. Each path has its perks. Each has its drawbacks. And each one shapes your daily life in very different ways.

Jayme Richards, founder of The Nanny Collaborative, has spent more than three decades helping families find trusted in-home care. Whether it’s first-time parents or those managing toddlers and tweens, she says most have little room for sick days or last-minute errands.

“Convenience is a big factor,” she says. “Having someone at your house, with your child, handling things—it’s hard to overstate how much that helps.”

Richards’ clients often include both parents who are full-time, working professionals with a calendar that barely has space to breathe. These are families who can’t afford to scramble when the baby gets pinkeye, or a meeting runs late, or the dog eats a sock.

A nanny steps in where needed. They pick up groceries, fold laundry, prep dinner, and manage the toy explosion that seems to happen five minutes after cleanup. That way, when parents walk in the door, they can be present—not playing catch-up.

But it’s not just about to-do lists. A good nanny becomes an extension of the family. They know your kid’s nap quirks, what snacks they love and when a meltdown is brewing.

“Nannies aren’t babysitters,” Richards explains. “They’re professionals. They know how to meet a child where they are—developmentally, emotionally, even on a cranky Monday.”

Still, even the most magical nanny needs a break. Enter the modern day care: structured, social and increasingly flexible.

Maggie Pisarczyk, owner of Celebree School of Northbrook, knows that juggle well. She ran a

household as a nanny for five years before opening her own early childhood education center.

“We grow people big and small,” she says. “That means emotionally, socially, developmentally—and yes, physically.”

Celebree serves kids from six weeks to 12 years and offers everything from infant care to after-school programs to summer camp. Pisarczyk developed the school with working families in mind. That means drop-in care when needed, part-time enrollment and coverage before and after school options. There’s even a team of trained floaters who step in when someone on staff calls out.

The vibe? Structured but warm. Teachers serve family-style breakfasts. Toddlers learn to set the table and pour their own juice. There’s yoga, science, music and even a garden snake made of rocks painted by the kids. Every class follows a curriculum—even the infants.

Pisarczyk remembers what it’s like to be on the parent side of the equation.

“I try to meet people where they are,” she says, “because I remember how hard it was to make it all work.”

And if your nanny calls out sick or takes a vacation, Celebree can often fill the gap. Their drop-in program means families don’t have to scramble when plans fall through.

“Families are surprised by how flexible we are,” she adds.

Both care models prioritize consistency, trust, safety and emotional well-being. Richards vets every nanny she places with extensive background checks, social media reviews and reference calls. CPR and first aid are the minimum. She also takes the time to understand parenting style, comfort level with independence and what a typical day looks like at home. Pisarczyk has a similarly rigorous interview, selection and screening process for her staff.

“Anyone can do dishes,” Richards says. “But it takes a certain kind of person to love your children—and love their job.”

She encourages families to try a nanny for a day, or at least a few hours, to see what the chemistry is like when the parents leave the house. If something feels off, a reputable agency will help find a replacement.

Pisarczyk takes a similar onboarding approach, easing new children into the school with short visits or playdates. “We want kids to feel safe and seen,” she says. “And parents want that too.”

So how do you choose?

If your child thrives in a one-on-one setting and your family wants help managing the home, a nanny might make more sense. If your child is ready to socialize or eager for structure and building more independence, a day care like Celebree may be the better fit.

Sometimes, it isn’t either-or. Some families use a nanny during infancy and transition to school-based

“That means emotionally, socially, developmentally— and yes, physically.”

care around age two or three. Others keep both options open, using day care part-time and a nanny on backup, depending on work, travel, or sibling needs.

There’s no one-size-fits all solution. Just people—smart, thoughtful, skilled people—working to support you and your family.

Just don’t wait until you’re running on fumes to figure it out. Sleep is hard enough to come by already.

ATHLETES IN TRAINING

These North Shore programs building strength, confidence and character through sport

FINISH STRONG KIDS

Now in its 16th year, Finish Strong Kids is a multisport training and league organization serving more than 2,500 kids on the North Shore. Founder Ed Reformado credits his grandfather and high school sports background as the inspiration for starting the program. “Growing up, I had a special bond with my grandfather through sports; it was always in me to share that love for sports with others,” says Reformado, who served as captain of his high school’s basketball team. “I got to help create practices and game plans—I took great pride in that.”

Finish Strong offers a variety of after-school and weekend sports programs, including activities appropriate for preschoolers as well as leagues in basketball, flag football, floor hockey and soccer for school-age kids through the seventh grade. There’s

also a summer camp program for up to 30 kids in each age group with a sports-centered schedule that also includes field trips and swimming.

Reformado is proud of his group of 34 coaches, some of whom started out in the program as participants. “I am very fortunate to see the previous generation come back and want to help the next generation, he says. “Our coaches are constantly in the community and love to support all Finish Strong participants outside of our program.”

Beyond the scoreboard, Finish Strong has an all-inclusive approach focused on character-building skills like leadership, friendship and teamwork. “It doesn’t matter where your kid lies athletically, if they enjoy sports, our staff will make everyone feel important, and find a role where they can be successful,” Reformado says.

D1 TRAINING

Husband-and-wife team Meghan and Kevin Marschall opened D1 Training North Shore earlier this spring as a place where the whole family could train. “People can come to D1, level up and gain confidence,” Meghan Marschall says. “Then, they can go back to their sport and be that much better.”

D1 offers strength training, conditioning and injury risk reduction for all ages and fitness levels. Programs are grouped by age and led by certified coaches—many with additional credentials. The Scholastics group (ages 7 to 11) focuses on fundamentals and agility, the Development group (ages 12 to 14) works on sport-specific skills, and the Prep group (ages 15 to 18) mirrors D1 college-level training. There’s also an adult fitness program with group classes and personal training.

Each new client starts with a one-on-one consultation and body composition scan. Progress check-ins happen at the one-week, 30-day and 45-day marks, either in person or through the TeamBuilder app.

“We attract people of all walks of life with differing fitness levels, and our athletes see measurable results within just a few weeks,” says Marschall. D1 also partners with therapists, doctors and schools—and plans to open two more locations in the next year.

KIDSTRONG

Opened in April in Libertyville, KidStrong is a science-based training program designed to help children from toddler age through 11 years build strength, confidence and emotional intelligence through progressive, age-appropriate challenges. Led by certified coaches and backed by childhood development experts, the program blends physical activity with character development in a structured, energetic setting.

Amee McCaughan).
“As a mom and soccer enthusiast, I wanted to create a space where kids can grow not just as players, but as people,” – Cathryn Smeyers, owner, Kicklab

“We’re aiming to help parents raise strong, confident, high-character kids,” says owner Alex Gordy, who’s looking to open another location in the Glenview/Northbrook area. “We do that via 45-minute weekly classes with curriculum designed by childhood development experts, and we’re focused on progression week to week and month to month.”

Classes run seven days a week and are organized into three-week skill-building blocks focused on activities like rope climbing, obstacle-based training and emotional intelligence skill-building with breathwork and communication tools. For toddlers under age 4, classes are hands-on with parents actively involved. Older kids work on preparing for team sports and physical conditioning—including proper squat form and strength training. They also

gain teamwork skills and “learn how to win and how to lose,” says facility general manager Julia Hassan. Students who move up the to the “Alpha” level have a chance to lead sessions with the assistance of coaches.

ELITE NORTH SHORE TALENT

Elite North Shore Talent is more than just a dance and cheer studio—it’s a community rooted in inclusivity, artistry and personal growth. Founded by Nabi Jordan-Polk, the studio evolved from a park district program into a thriving independent business that now offers recreational and competitive dance and cheer for ages 3 to 18, as well as adult tap and parent-tot classes.

“We’ve created a space where kids can try different genres, pursue performance or

competition, and still play sports or take breaks when needed,” says Jordan-Polk. “It’s about giving them a well-rounded experience.”

From ballet and hip-hop to tumbling and cheerleading, Elite North Shore Talent is known for its accessible and family-friendly approach. Students can join throughout the year, with makeup classes available and recital enrollment open through November to accommodate fall sports schedules.

This fall, the studio will introduce specialty skills workshops—one-time sessions focused on tumbling and acrobatic techniques like cartwheels and aerials, perfect for dancers and gymnasts alike.

KICKLAB

Born from a shared passion for the game, Kicklab is a new, state-of-the-art soccer training center located in Vernon Hills. Spanning over 9,000 square

feet, the space features professional-grade turf, responsive passing pods, interactive targets and tech-driven skill tracking to help players of all ages level up their game.

Kicklab combines the excitement of gaming with foundational soccer training—focusing on essential skills like passing, trapping, ball control and shooting with precision.

“As an educator, the learning and development of others has always been my passion,” says founder Cathryn Smeyers. “Now, as a mom and soccer enthusiast, I wanted to create a space where kids can grow not just as players, but as people.”

Director Jay Bulev, a seasoned coach and varsity girls coach at Stevenson High School, adds: “Our training is rooted in creativity, passion and purpose. Kicklab gives young players a chance to fall in love with the game while building real skills.”

HEALING HEARTS

HOW PETS SUPPORT OUR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

In the quiet moments of our lives, when stress creeps in and anxiety takes hold, many of us find solace in an unexpected source: our beloved pets. The bond between humans and animals has become a powerful therapeutic force that touches hearts and heals minds.

As a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Plena Mind Center, I see how pets transform lives—especially for young people navigating the complexities of growing up. My own English Labrador, Ari, is a constant reminder of this gentle power.

There’s something magical about a dog’s tail wag or a cat’s calming purr. Science supports what pet lovers have long known: these sweet moments are healing. Petting an animal releases oxytocin—the “love hormone”—melting away stress and wrapping us in calm and connection. No appointments necessary—just presence and unconditional love.

Pets also offer something rare: acceptance without judgment. They don’t give advice or urge us to “cheer up.” They simply stay close, offering quiet companionship and pure love.

For those healing from trauma or struggling with loneliness, animals can offer profound lessons in trust and connection. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Paws for Patrick organization to offer weekly pet therapy at Plena Mind Center. These special visits create magical moments where therapy animals provide comfort and joy that beautifully complement traditional care.

Watching patients smile when a dog rests its head in their lap reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful medicine comes on four legs. Our pets can’t cure everything—but they remind us that we are loved, just as we are.

Sit. Stay. Adjust.

Local chiropractor helps pets stay healthy through gentle spinal care

You might see a chiropractor for regular adjustments, but did you know your pet can benefit from them, too? Neither did we.

Hyunjung Lee, DC, LCP, cAVCA, owner of Revive Family Chiropractic in Vernon Hills, helps care for animals with a specific chiropractic technique called Applied Kinesiology. “We’re focused on the nervous system and making sure it’s at optimal function by addressing the spine—both for humans and animals,” she says. “Many animals have limping and gait issues and suffer from herniated discs that cause pinched nerves, just like us. We’re in the business of getting them back to their daily activities and giving them the opportunity to heal a lot faster without the use of drugs or surgeries.”

Treating the spine for nervous system regulation with gentle adjustments has also been shown to help organ function and improve the digestive system — especially for animals with food sensitivity and aversion issues.

When it comes to dogs, Dr. Lee commonly sees gait issues caused by arthritis and hip dysplasia. Cats can benefit from gentle chiropractic adjustments to help address anxiety and irritability issues, according to Dr. Lee. Not only does she help small animals, she also helps bigger animals like horses. Stable owners call her to work with their horses on restoring stability to the spine, which is said to help with overall musculoskeletal health and improve performance.

“The main goal for pets in receiving chiropractic care is to improve overall health and ultimately be able to avoid any unnecessary surgeries,” she says. “Like humans, animals respond to specific chiropractic treatments very well and it’s amazing how much their quality of life can greatly improve—at all ages.”
