One of life’s greatest joys is sharing it with those we love—whether that’s two-legged or four. As we dive into our August “Kids and Pets” issue, I’ve been reflecting on how special it is to make memories with the little ones in our lives.
My husband and I recently took our 10-yearold grandson on a whirlwind adventure to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. His joy was contagious—from racing to the front of every ride to giggling at magic wand tricks in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It reminded me how important it is to include kids in our world, not just as tagalongs, but as essential parts of life’s journey. I’ve had the joy of traveling with my grandkids since they were tiny, and we’ve made unforgettable memories, like exploring the Eiffel Tower with our 16-year-old granddaughter in Paris. Or horseback riding on the grounds of Southfork Ranch in Texas with our then 10-year-old granddaughter, who didn't get my fascination with the 1970's sitcom. Or panning for gemstones at a cave in Missouri's Ozark Mountains with our preteen grandsons, who forgot about electronics for an entire day. These shared experiences stay with you forever.
While I don’t currently have a pet, I still miss my beloved Cocker Spaniel, Lizzie. She was part of our family and sat by my feet daily as I wrote. Many of you understand the deep bond we form with our furry companions. Pets give us unconditional love, companionship, and comfort, and deserve to be celebrated alongside the rest of the family.
As I write this, I’m also turning a page in my own story. This will be my final issue as managing editor of North Peoria Lifestyle. For the past four years, it’s been my honor to help showcase the stories, people, and places that make the West Valley a vibrant and welcoming community. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives.
My husband and I are now living full-time in our RV, exploring the beauty and wonder of the U.S. As I travel, I continue to share stories through my writing. If you’d like to keep in touch or follow my travels, I’d love to have you join me on Instagram at @wanderwithwonder.
Here’s to continuing the adventure—whether you’re chasing a toddler, your teens, your puppy, or your next dream.
With gratitude,

SHOTT'S TOTS KEEPS YOUTH HOCKEY ALIVE IN THE VALLEY
When the Arizona Coyotes moved out of state, a local nonprofit set a goal to ensure that the sport of hockey didn't entirely depart from the Grand Canyon State—at least, not without a struggle. And it begins with the next generation.
This is the purpose and mission of Shott's Tots, a youth Learn-to-Play program designed to introduce kids ages 5 to 11 to the game of hockey in a way that is both accessible and affordable. It is offered in cooperation with the National Hockey League, USA Hockey, and local hockey rinks and organizations, including AZ Ice Peoria.
Olympian Lyndsey Fry, President and Founder of the Matt Shott Arizona Hockey Legacy Foundation (AZHockeyLegacy.org), leads the organization.
SHOTT'S TOTS IS A PERSONAL MISSION FOR OLYMPIAN LYNDSEY FRY
Shott's Tots is not simply another developmental sports program. For Fry, it's very personal.
“I'm a product of Arizona hockey," says Fry. “I played in college and played in the Olympics for Team USA. I want to provide that opportunity for kids in the Valley. This is about keeping hockey alive in Arizona and honoring my friend who was so committed to making hockey accessible to everyone."
Named after popular Arizona hockey figure and former Coyotes executive Matt Shott—who passed away in 2021— the Shott's Tots program was established to fill a gap in the junior hockey scene around the Valley. The Arizona Coyotes had partnered with the NHL for years to run a local Learn-to-Play program that introduced hundreds of children to the sport. After the team left Arizona, Fry and the Foundation stepped in to ensure those opportunities did not leave with them.
The program operates on the straightforward premise of providing kids with the gear, coaching, and support to try hockey without committing to a substantial or long-term investment.
For $299, the players receive six on-ice instructional sessions and a set of hockey equipment—skates, helmet, stick, pads, and a Shott's Tots jersey. That is a fraction of what most families would invest to start playing hockey, says Fry.
"Traditional hockey clubs can be scary and expensive for families," Fry explains. "We wanted to take that obstacle out and introduce kids to the sport first—to fall in love with it in an informal, relaxed setting."
The low-cost youth hockey program has already attracted many families in North Peoria. Shott's Tots programs take place at AZ Ice Peoria, where beginners learn fundamental hockey skills in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Kids can then progress into AZ Ice’s more advanced programs, which include Cubs, Mini Mites, and local youth leagues.
“We’re planting seeds for the future,” says Fry. “These are the future players, fans, and ambassadors of hockey in Arizona. Something we need here in the Valley.”
In addition to stickhandling and skating drills, the program instills values far beyond the rink, including confidence, teamwork, and perseverance.
“We’re not just building hockey players,” Fry emphasizes. “We’re helping kids learn life skills. That’s what Matt Shott cared about most, making sure everyone had a chance to play, grow, and be part of something.”

HOW TO GET YOUR LITTLE ONES INVOLVED IN SCHOTT'S TOTS
Year-round sessions are offered for those interested in joining, with new schedules added continuously. Parents are welcome to reach out online, where they can find the latest registration information before each new session.
With the August back-to-school season approaching, Shott's Tots offers families an excellent opportunity to introduce their children to a new sport. Fry encourages participation as a special way for kids to discover new interests.
She says Shott's Tots is a wonderful place to begin. "If the kid plays hockey for a year or becomes the next Olympian, it doesn't matter; they were there, learned, and discovered the game for themselves."
Throughout Peoria and beyond, the passion for hockey is alive and thriving—and continuing to grow, thanks to Shott's Tots.
Peoria Man Brings New Cinnabon and Carvel Desserts to North Peoria
Peoria became a lot sweeter with the recent opening of Cinnabon Swirl (CinnabonSwirl.com), a bold new venture that combines the cinnamon roll chain with the legendary frozen sweets of Carvel.
The North Peoria location joins a handful of Cinnabon Swirl stores launched by Atlantabased GoTo Foods. Franchise owner Namit Mangat, who also oversees Moe's Southwest Grill locations throughout Arizona, is driving this exciting new venture in Peoria.
“We’re excited to introduce a fun, new spin on the Cinnabon experience,” says Mangat.
“We’re offering innovative menu items, baked goods, frozen desserts, and shareable treats, all inspired by the signature cinnamon roll flavor people know and love.”
The unique Cinnabon Swirl concept combines Cinnabon's delicious baked goods with Carvel's soft-serve ice cream and ice cream cakes. Designed for both indulgence and relaxation, the store's friendly atmosphere and innovative offerings are sure to delight dessert lovers of all ages.
Mangat chose Peoria for this initial location because of its atmosphere and
small-town feel. "Peoria is a lively community with a lot of families and people who are looking for something new. We knew this sort of dessert location would be popular in this area," he says. "It's a wonderful combination of old and new."
He expects Cinnabon Swirl to be more than a sweet spot, envisioning it as a community hub where people gather to celebrate life's moments."Whether it's a birthday, a school achievement, or just a hangout, we want everyone to feel welcome, says Mangat.
Cinnabon Swirl is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 24759 N Lake Pleasant Parkway. Stop in for a Cinnabon Swirl Sundae, which features warm, center swirls of a Cinnabon classic roll chopped and topped with Carvel vanilla soft serve, or a Birthday Cake Ice Cream Sandwich, which features soft serve nestled between cookies and blue cream cheese frosting. Yum!
This new dessert destination aims to serve sweet-toothed patrons from Peoria and surrounding communities.

We want this to be a community hub where people gather to celebrate life's moments.
Local dog groomer, Jeneh Young, shares tips for summer grooming and pet care
During the heat of a Peoria summer, keeping pets safe and comfortable requires more than just love and attention—it requires knowledge, experience, and a great deal of care. That’s exactly what local dog groomer and business owner Jeneh Young brings to the community through her unique grooming space, Doggy & Bark Co. (DoggyandBark.com), designed to provide pets with personalized care.
“I have been a groomer for 23 years, and I wanted to bring a unique experience to grooming,” Young says. “A place where pets can come in and feel safe and comfortable. We make every pet our priority while they are in our care.”
Originally from Washington State, this passionate pet lover has called the Peoria/ Surprise area home for years. In addition to being a skilled groomer, she’s a devoted mother of four who enjoys camping, gardening, cooking, and baking sourdough.
In her professional life, it’s clear that her true calling is helping dogs feel their best.
“It brings me immense joy when pets come in wagging their tails and are so excited to see me,” explains Young. “Making puppies look and feel their best and leave feeling confident and happy is my main goal.”
Young’s grooming philosophy is grounded in compassion and personalization. At her salon, dogs receive one-on-one attention, which minimizes the stress of long hours in crates or noisy group settings. This individualized care is particularly beneficial for anxious pets, as Young and her team give each pet the space and time to trust the grooming process.
“I love that my team and I have facilitated an environment where anxious pets can learn to trust grooming, no matter what level of experience they’ve had before,” says Young.
As Arizona temperatures soar during summer, dog owners must take extra precautions to protect their furry friends from the heat. That's where grooming becomes more than cosmetic—it’s a vital part of keeping dogs healthy and comfortable.
“A well-groomed pet is a comfortable pet,” explains Young. “Keeping them deShedded or getting regular haircuts helps them regulate their body temperature.”
She offers these grooming tips by coat type:
• Hair breeds (poodles, Maltese, Yorkies, Shih Tzus): To prevent matting, use a wire slicker brush and a greyhound comb.“Because they have hair instead of fur, it can mat very easily just as our own hair would without regular brushing,” Young explains
• Fur breeds with undercoats (huskies, golden retrievers): Regular brushing with a slicker brush, deShedding tool, and greyhound comb is essential. “The undercoat can build up and become impacted, which causes discomfort and overheating,” Young warns.
Matting is one of the most common grooming issues in summer, especially for dogs that swim frequently. “Hair mats more easily when it’s wet,” explains Young. “It’s so important to dry and brush pets after bathing or swimming, or give them a shorter, more manageable haircut. Humanity before vanity."
Frequent brushing, bathing, detangling, and the right haircut help dogs stay cool, clean, and mat-free, particularly if your pet is an outdoor adventurer or pool lover.
In addition to proper grooming, summer pet care includes some simple but often overlooked daily habits.
“The most important things are access to shade and clean water 100% of the time,” Young advises. “Always check the pavement with your hand before walking your pet. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.”
Sydnee is a Peoria-based creative with a journalism, copywriting, and social media background. A graduate of ASU’s Cronkite School, her writing focuses on lifestyle, travel, and nature. She’s probably riding horses, trail running with her dogs, or planning her next adventure when she's not writing.
“As Arizona temperatures soar during the summer months, dog owners must take extra precautions to protect their furry friends from the heat.”
Walks are best in early mornings and late evenings. Pet booties protect paws, and pad balms moisturize skin to help prevent cracks or burns.
Young also urges pet parents to recognize signs of heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and stroke. Those signs include drooling, heavy panting, red gums, an elevated heart rate, and lethargy.
“If a pet is overheated, move them to a shaded area, use cool (not freezing) water and fans to help. But in an emergency, contact a vet immediately,” Young explains.
As the heat fades, Young suggests gradually regrowing longer coats to have pets looking fluffy and photo-ready for the holidays.
Beyond grooming and safety, nutrition plays a role in healthy skin and a shiny coat.
“I highly recommend a pumpkin supplement or plain old canned pumpkin,” says Young. “Fish oil is a great supplement for pets. Dosage instructions are based on weight. Cooked eggs are good for pets' skin as they're high in protein, linoleic acid, and vitamin A.”
Young offers more than grooming—she’s a trusted guide for pet parents in Peoria. She provides expert care, personalized tips, and a calming environment that keeps pets happy, healthy, and confident all year.
Doggy & Bark Co. Pet Grooming is conveniently located in the Ventana Lakes Village Center in Peoria.

As an Arizona native, Julie Kang turned a troublesome summer problem into a successful business that helps keep people cool.
As the creator of Cool Carats (CoolCarats.com), Kang’s "aha" moment came after giving birth.
"I've burned my legs on hot car seats for years. But when it came time to place my baby in the same seat, I lost it," Kang explains. "I couldn't find anything out there to help, so I took matters into my own hands."
Featuring pioneering CoolTech™ technology, Cool Carats is a disposable car seat cooler that protects children and adults from scorching hot car seats. Freeze the pad overnight, place it on an empty car seat, and remove it before sitting or placing your little one on the seat.
Kang explains that, as the daughter of business owners, she always wanted to own her own business, but she didn't like the long hours her parents worked.
"By using e-commerce," she says, "I work smarter and can still reach customers all over the world."
Whether you're a parent or just someone who dreads the summer heat, Cool Carats is a must-have for surviving Arizona summers and beyond.

ADVENTURE-READY REFINEMENT WITH POWER, POISE, AND PREMIUM FEATURES
Combining utility with a touch of luxury, the 2025 Subaru Outback Touring XT is the most refined version of Subaru’s beloved midsize SUV. It delivers rugged capability with standard all-wheel drive and a suite of advanced tech, including the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System. Inside, ventilated Nappa leather seats offer both comfort and elegance.
I recently test drove the Touring XT in Cosmic Blue Pearl. While I’m not a fan of the station wagon silhouette, I appreciated its smooth, quiet ride and excellent fuel economy. The 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Harman Kardon sound system elevate the driving experience.
ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUBARU OF AMERICA
Under the hood, the Touring XT packs a turbocharged 2.4-liter Subaru Boxer engine paired with a High Torque Lineartronic CVT and eight-speed manual shift mode. Safety features come standard with Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring.
My biggest complaint? The lack of storage up front. Aside from two cup holders and a center console, there’s not much space for essentials like a phone or keys.
Still, the 2025 Outback Touring XT blends capability and comfort with a hint of quirky charm.
