August — Kids & Pets

August is a time of transition for many as school restarts. We focus on our kids and look forward to the changes another school year will inevitably bring. I remember when my son first started to drive—SCARY! And then, his little sister started driving a couple of years later. I couldn’t believe both my son and my daughter were old enough to navigate their own ways on the road. What an adjustment that was!

But that’s what parenting is all about, isn’t it? It’s about adjusting to our children as they adjust to the new world around them. There is so much to learn, explore, and find when you are a child, and I love our annual “Kids and Pets” issue, which comes out every August, because it allows us all to remember and reconnect with the child inside of us.

In this issue of North Peoria Lifestyle, we walk you through a treasure trove of stories. We outline some unique and exciting products for kids, introduce you to our own award-winning 7th-grade actress and vocalist, Jax Fuchs, offer up some dog training tips, make a car recommendation for first-time drivers, and then, hopefully, a story that will ignite your inner spirit. Leeanne Gardner of Unbridled Pathways has been helping people reconnect with themselves and their communities by working with horses for various groups. Her life-changing work is so special to the Northwest Valley, and I encourage you to schedule a spot for yourself, your team, your family, or any other group of special people with whom you share this amazing journey.

Kids and pets hold the candles to our souls. They are our connection to others, to that child inside each of us, and are so much the source of our love. Whatever adjustment you may be making in life, or for your children, we hope you get a bunch of wonderful tips and ideas from this issue so you can create some special summer memories!

EQUINE EXCELLENCE

Unbridled Pathways is a Program Aimed at Helping Tween Girls Succeed

PHOTOGRAPHY BY UNBRIDLED PATHWAYS

Tween girls, as well as their families, are often on the lookout for new ways to find motivation, encouragement, and mentorship. A new program is opening in the West Valley for tween girls interested in a career or future working with horses.

“Our programs aim to provide transformative learning experiences and opportunities through connections with horses.”

Leeanne Gardner, founder of Unbridled Pathways (UnbridledPathways.org), is starting a new program for tween equine lovers. The plan is to collaborate with local ranches near middle schools to offer the equine-assisted mentoring program.

ABOUT UNBRIDLED PATHWAYS

Unbridled Pathways is a 501c3 organization based in Cave Creek. Its mission is to facilitate Equine Inspired Experiences for Individuals and Organizations (EIEIO), with the goal of bolstering confidence, fostering genuine connections, and nurturing communities, says Gardner.

All of the programs Gardner offers aim to provide transformative learning experiences and opportunities through connections with horses.

UNBRIDLED CONFIDENCE FOR TWEENS

The new program, Unbridled Confidence, is an innovative program designed to empower middle schoolage girls through the connections between humans and horses.

For Gardner, this new program is essential for girls today. “The program focuses on personal growth, self-confidence, improved social skills, and emotional validation. Self-confidence plays a significant role in understanding boundaries and preventing bullying,” says Gardner.

THE ROLE OF HORSES IN HELPING TWEENS SUCCEED

Gardner, who has been surrounded by horses most of her life, says she wants young girls to have the opportunity to experience what she has through these equine connections.

“I have experienced first-hand the power of the horse-human connection,” Gardner explains. “As herd animals, horses epitomize a sense of presence, authenticity, and coherent relationships with one another, all with no judgment.”

For Gardner, the hope is to encourage the next generation of women and shift away from conditions where bullying is prevalent. “Several generations of children were raised on technology, and I feel the CONTINUED >

equine interactions will help shift the energies and create stronger future leaders, resulting in more cohesive communities.”

HOW UNBRIDLED CONFIDENCE WORKS

This new program is based on 4BNU Tween Mentoring Program by Susan F. Moody, Certified Confidence Coach for Tweens and Teens. Moody implemented this mentoring program in the Phoenix area through partnerships with Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Mentorkids USA, Phoenix Youth At Risk, and others.

Gardner explains that, “Along with Liz Covert of TRRFCC Horsemanship, we will be adding in the powerful equine component for an added bonus and wisdom from the horses.”

Gardner explains that the program is not currently seeking individual applicants. Instead, she hopes to create collaborative relationships with local ranches and charity organizations.

“We are looking for local grants or donations from organizations that may want to be involved in offering this mentoring program for low or no cost to middle school girls and their families. For instance, $7500 would sponsor 12 students to participate in the 8-week program,” says Gardner.

Once the program for tween girls is established, Gardner has big plans for the future. “We would like to roll out a similar program for boys. We are also developing an equine mentoring program for elementary school kids focusing on reading and writing literacy and one for high schoolers focusing on leadership skills.”

LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE EQUINE PROGRAMS

Before the program gets up and running, there are still things area residents can do to get involved and help build the program. Unbridled Pathways always accepts financial donations to bring equine programs to kids and adults alike. Gardner shares, “Your financial support allows us to find safe spaces and professionals to help us create memorable experiences with horses.”

In addition, Gardner encourages those who own horses to consider collaborating with her to offer more locations for the equine program across the Valley. Check the website for ways to get involved, volunteer, or donate financially.

LITTLE GIRL, BIG DREAMS

GLENDALE GIRL IS TAKING THE LOCAL THEATRE COMMUNITY BY STORM

At only 12 years old, Glendale seventh grader Jacquelyn “Jax” Fuchs is an award-winning vocalist and honor roll student and has been in over 20 musical productions around the Valley, including a professional run in Scrooge! at Arizona Theatre Company.

“Performing in Scrooge! was a dream come true," says Fuchs. "I shared the stage with so many incredible actors.” She says she never wanted it to end.

“I can't imagine my life without performing. I get to be creative. I know it makes the audience  happy—and it makes me happy.”

Bobb Cooper, Executive Producer for Valley Youth Theatre, has often worked with Fuchs. "She is a talented artist and always works hard to give her best performance."

Cooper also appreciates Fuchs' feisty sense of humor and says she has an uncanny adorableness.

Fuchs has her sights set on Broadway or the silver screen. “Lydia from Beetlejuice is my dream role," she muses.

Understanding that big dreams take hard work, Fuchs is a shining example of dedication. She takes weekly singing and acting lessons, multiple dance classes, and piano and tumbling lessons.

Matt August, Kasser Family Artistic Director at Arizona Theatre Company, believes Fuchs has a bright future ahead of her. "She has a ton of talent, a beautiful voice, a generous work ethic, and is adorable onstage," he says. "She is savvy about what it takes to succeed in this very competitive industry, and she is dedicated to learning all the skills it will require, both onstage and off."

Fuchs doesn't seem to mind the hard work. “I want to be the best performer I can be.”

Two years ago, Fuchs was diagnosed with scoliosis. Her mom, Angel Fuchs, explains that performing helps the tween cope with her condition. "She's strong, confident, and disciplined. That's what she needs to endure 14 hours a day in a back brace."

Shoes That Support Growing Feet

With so many sneakers on the market, finding a pair your child will love and that supports growth and foot health can seem daunting. Nathan and Rebecca Hohenstein, owners of Tortoise and Hare Sports (TortoiseandHareSports.com), have experienced this firsthand with their kids and are here to help you find the perfect back-to-school shoes for your child.

When shopping for athletic shoes, “One of the most important things is having your child in the right size shoe,” emphasizes Rebecca.

The shoes should also be supportive, durable, breathable, and versatile. Through Tortoise and Hare’s 5-point fit process, parents can relax while associates find the perfect shoe for their child.

“We really want to make sure we’re balancing and aligning the foot to the rest of the kid’s body so that the foot can continue to develop healthfully,” explains Nathan.

Gold Award Girl Scouts Are Setting the Gold Standard in Our Community

Local Girl Scouts Honored for Community Service

This year, three local Peoria girls have received the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. The prestigious Gold Award is presented to girls in grades 9 through 12 who have worked to address relevant local or national issues.

Emily Coronado

Emily created a mural at Centennial High School dedicated to performing and visual arts to encourage students to get involved in these programs. Emily spoke with students of all grades to communicate her mural's message, encouraging them to participate in the arts while emphasizing the benefits. After she completed the mural, the school saw an increase in the arts and drama clubs. Emily, a Girl Scout of seven years, is a Centennial High School graduate and attends Glendale Community College, where she studies fine arts illustration.

Rachel Leppla

Rachel created her Gold Award project to spread awareness about sustainable energy and how the use of energy affects the world. Rachel researched and created an online platform to share her findings with the local community. She ensured her research was accessible to young audiences to help them understand sustainable and clean energy. Rachel, who spent 12 years in Girl Scouts, is now using her leadership and communication skills to pursue degrees in English and Journalism/Mass Communications at Arizona State University.

Claire Xu

Drawing inspiration from her long-time experience in music as a piano and flute player—and lovely memories of performing for her grandparents—Claire created “Music for Community,” a bi-weekly club that performs monthly recitals at senior living facilities. During the project, thanks to Claire's encouragement and organizational skills, the impactful club gained 26 members across 13 different instruments and held 15 club performances at eight retirement homes across the Valley. With 11 years in Scouting, Claire attends Mountain Ridge High School and plans to study economics or business administration.

TAKE A PAGE FROM CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FOR CLASSIC BIRTHDAY PARTY THEMES

let the WILD RUMPUS begin

ARTICLE BY CHERYL PARTON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Whether seeking philosophical guidance or deciding what’s for dinner, recipes for life can be found in literature. We learn from great minds that came before us, and that’s true when planning a birthday party. Take a page from classical children’s books to find themes that combine playfulness, colorful illustration and words to inspire food, décor and games that will tickle the fancy of youthful guests, with a central activity of reading aloud. Published in 1963, “Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the most recognizable children’s picture books of all time. Writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak created a universal story about mastering fears. Dressed in his wolf costume, and sent to his room for creating havoc at home, young Max travels to an island of Wild Things where he becomes king. It’s a story about childhood resilience and mastery of fears, but simply observed, the fantastical book provides a colorful segue to an afternoon birthday romp in the park. When it comes to wild things, enjoy inspiration from our own party, plus we’ve compiled some ideas for ways to help the rumpus begin based on other beloved titles:

“Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice.”

“WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE” BY MAURICE SENDAK

As a costume party, have guests dress as their favorite wild thing. A crown-making activity allows everyone to be King (or Queen) for a day.

GAME: Wild Rumpus Dance Party. A twist on the Freeze Dance, guests dance and prance freely until the music stops. An extra step means that player is out. A winner is the last “beast” to stand still after multiple rounds of play.

“CURIOUS GEORGE” BY MARGRET AND H. A. REY

Gather a barrel of monkeys, plus your favorite Man in the Yellow Hat, for a party where guests can go bananas. George always seems to wander, so try a scavenger hunt that meanders from clue to clue. Banana cupcakes, banana bread, and a tower of bananas add a healthy touch to the dessert table.

GAME: Monkey in the Middle. Create a circle with one guest in the middle. Toss a ball, or soft monkey toy, across the circle without the monkey in the middle catching it.

“DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!” BY MO WILLEMS

Though an unlikely party host, pigeon—with his wide-eyed enthusiasm—sets a party tone. Eat “bird seed” trail mix and hot dogs (inspired by another Willems title, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!”).  Printable images of Pigeon lend themselves to thematic and whimsical decorations.

GAME: Red Light, Green Light. With guests as “bus drivers,” they make their way to the station/finish line with a twist on this classic party game.

Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice. Give books as party favors or add a layer of philanthropy by having guests bring their favorite book to donate to a local nonprofit.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

DOG

SOCIALIZING

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
