Marvelous Mesdames

Mothers, sisters, wives, aunts and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, attention is on moms. However, it’s not just biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who've made indelible impacts on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors taking awesome steps in our communities, pouring into our lives -- making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our community. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role -connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Newtown's women. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

Please take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, set up a special beverage toast or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. Brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Smiles to all,

May 2023

Happy Birthday To One Of The Borough's Oldest, Iconic Institutions

Kathy Buczek, owner of The Temperance House in Newtown, purchased the building less than a decade ago to ensure that it retained its historic charm, grace, elegance and hospitality. To celebrate the Temp's 250th year of operation, Newtown Borough Mayor John Burke recently paid a special visit there to present Kathy with a proclamation marking the occasion. The proclamation encouraged residents to raise a toast in recognition of this historic milestone.

Local Ladies Contribute Through The Arts

TAKE A LOOK AT WONDERFUL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FROM THESE WOMEN

Ashara Shapiro

ArtWRKD is a full-service art consortium at 126 S. State Street in Newtown, with a mission for discovering, fostering and sharing all mediums of original work by best-emerging artists, says owner/curator Ashara Shapiro.

“I created ArtWRKD as a support to artists, our community and the education of expression. Art is an essential part of society,” she explains. “ArtWRKD offers space to the community for workshops, art education, lectures, artist interaction, events and a curated artist boutique.”

She says she personally creates art to show her world. “To share with others the way I see, exist and feel about everything both introspectively and outside myself. It’s the best way I know to communicate.”

“Art is essential to me because it’s the foundation for our culture,” she adds. “Art explores our collective humanity. We’ve always had art as a part of expression since we were on this Earth. I feel like creating a space to perpetuate the conversation is my mission.”

Two new events debut this month at ArtWRKD:  Wearable Art Fashion Show on May 12 and the Wearable Art & Fiber Exhibit May 12-31.

Nancy Pickering

Widespread benefits from the one and only 40-year-old Newtown Arts Company still manifest abundantly in today’s local community.

In 1983, Newtown enthusiasts celebrated the borough’s 300th anniversary and history with a pageant called Sweet Land . Volunteers from all walks of life converged to sing, act, dance, build sets, sew costumes, play music, sell tickets and bring Newtown’s distinctive story to life. However, the energy generated by that milestone production didn’t die at the final curtain. Artistic matriarch and Newtown resident Nancy Pickering was one of the founders of the group. She says members of that cast and crew formed the Newtown Arts Company to continue delivering live performances.

“In addition to enriching the cultural life of the greater Newtown area, the company has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarship grants to graduating high school seniors,” says Nancy.

Now after being launched four decades ago this year, Newtown Arts Company currently presents six shows annually. The regular season includes an array of dramas, comedies and musicals from classic to contemporary themes. Since 2006, performances have been staged at the historic Newtown Theatre, the nation’s oldest movie house built in 1831.

Nancy, who is the current secretary of the Company’s executive board, reminds there are many ways to measure success when it comes to the arts.

“For our youngest thespians, it’s the recognition of their growing confidence as they learn basic theatrical skills that will help them in many areas of life beyond the stage. And it can be felt in the heartfelt thanks from students headed off to colleges, universities and conservatories to pursue higher education in the performing and fine arts, because their talents have been rewarded with scholarship grants,” she adds.

Check out the upcoming performances of the Newtown Arts Company crew:

• Stars of Tomorrow (July 10-14)

• 13 (August 3-6)

• The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Nighttime (Oct. 19-22)

• The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Nov. 3-Dec. 3)

"In the world of live theater, success is seen in audiences' reactions as they laugh, smile, shed tears or applaud fine performances. It can be felt in the sense of camaraderie and family that develops among the cast and crew as they work together to tell a story."

Rae Radick

This soulful, professional musician grew up in Richboro, and graduated from Council Rock South High School. Rae Radick’s been a singer/songwriter since she was 16 years old. She currently splits her time between New York and Nashville working as a full-time professional performer, although she assures that her Bucks County roots still influence her music. She also tours internationally.

“Music is without a doubt the foundation and purest form of human expression and connection,” she assures. “It’s a universal language serving as a vessel of relation. Whether you’re dancing, singing, or just listening to music, it can alter your emotions and transport you as the melody or lyrics affect you.”

Rae opened for country music stars Miranda Lambert and Brett Young at Citadel Country Spirit Music Festival in 2021. “I’m like the Love Child of Shania Twain + Miranda Lambert + 70s Glam,” she quips.

She adds that she’s drawn to writing music about specific themes: struggles of relationships, growth, nostalgia and freedom. “I’m about being fierce yet vulnerable, classy yet authentic, free-thinking, and finding your own path in a technology-based world.”

There are decades of studies, documented from as far back as 1789, about music therapy and how it heals a variety of disorders, Rae shares. She adds that even the Ancient Egyptians used music, vibrations and frequencies to heal the sick. “The amount of artists, storytellers, genres and sounds in the world today are extensive, and there’s truly something for everyone to connect with.”

Catch Rae performing on May 4 at Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, May 13 for a solo acoustic show at Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, or performing on May 31 with Jessie’s Girl band at the Penn Community Amphitheater in Bensalem.

In Newtown on July 14, she’ll deliver a solo acoustic show at Triple Sun Spirits at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at TripleSunSpirits.com/Newtown-room. She just played at The Newtown Theatre in January.

Jennifer Hansen Rolli says her impressionistic paintings celebrate a multitude of places and spaces, from Bucks County backroads to the sunshine yellow, cab-jammed streets of New York. “My paintings invite everyone to discover and re-discover the nooks and crannies of ‘our places,’ and the everyday world we live in, rich with light and color and awe-inspiring moments,” she adds. “These little slices of life are worth immortalizing.”

Art has been an integral security in her life, she espouses. “The joy it brings me and to others has always been fulfilling. The process poses many struggles, but there’s always a solution, and I know I’ll find it. Sometimes it takes a really long time, but the answer isn’t impossible. Over time, I’ve learned this is valuable in all aspects of life. It was by watching my children find their own paths by creating, uncreating and then recreating that taught me this. Be patient and answers will come.”

She says she believes art has played a consistent role in society throughout the ages.

“On a large scale, an artist has put thought into everything manmade. This includes the chain on the blinds of the upper floor window I’m currently looking out of in Philadelphia, the blinking pizza sign, a twisting skyscraper, a knitted Eagles hat, and row after row of distant brick homes. This paints a picture of today’s society just as much as the abstract painting hanging to my right,” she says.

“Collectively, all kinds of artists are the underpinnings of society, looking to push boundaries in a slow, wavelike motion, linked to the past, linked to the future, feeding off of each other as they add their stamp on society. Citizens are touched by, and digest all this, as it quietly influences their lives.”

Her artwork has been called evocative and elegant, due to capturing elements of the ordinary and turning them into extraordinary results. Locally, her paintings are displayed at the Silverman Gallery of Bucks County Impressionist Art in Holicong. JenniferHansenRolli.com

Deborah Pomroy

Creating floral arrangements is another form of expressive art and beautiful handiwork, as evidenced by this local floral specialist who parlays colors, textures and scents of flowers in extraordinary ways.

Deborah Pomroy has been designing florals for more than 35 years and resides in Yardley with her furry buddies, Finley and Moses. After owning her own flower shop for 17 years, Deborah moved on to wedding floral design at Fabufloras in Philadelphia before working locally.

“I enjoy generating and sharing special tips and tricks to help others create magic to take home and enjoy,” she says.

Studies indicate that flowers have a longterm positive effect on moods. Flowers make intimate connections and help enhance enjoyment and life satisfaction.

“The intricate details of each and every flower I use amaze me. Floral design reminds me to stop and notice the curve of every stem, the brilliant color of each petal, the slight hints of fragrance and the many different textures of the seed pods,” says Deborah. “Meditating on these intricacies grounds me and helps keep me calm and focused throughout these busy days.”

Deborah is an adjunct professor at Mercer County Community College where she teaches the floral design program classes. She has a bachelor’s degree in ornamental horticulture with a floriculture emphasis and a business minor from Delaware Valley University.

She now also is found composing beautiful display vignettes, teaching classes and building spectacular floral arrangements as designer and event coordinator at the family-owned Seasons Garden Center in Washington Crossing.

“After a time when people felt safer to be separate from one another, I feel art is a bonding agent to bring us back together. When we share our art, we’re able to share a bit of ourselves with others. It’s cleansing to express our feelings to others once again,” Deborah concludes. SeasonsGardenCenter.com

INNOVATIVE, LASTING CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT

NEWTOWN CHIROPRACTOR GETS TO ROOTS OF WOMEN'S SPORTS INJURIES

Dr. Jennifer Grozalis has treated Newtown residents and local athletes since 2000 when she started Synergy Sports Rehabilitation and Chiropractic. A sports chiropractor specializing in soft tissue therapy, the physician treats not only bones and joints but also the surrounding tissues, muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments.

“What we do at Synergy is the future of sports injuries treatments,” she explains. “We have the most advanced equipment and are constantly pursuing more education to make sure we're offering our patients the best and most innovative care available.”

ATHLETE LIFE | HEALTH + WELLNESS

While many people typically associate chiropractors' work with simply adjusting the spine to treat back and neck injuries — therapies Dr. Grozalis practices by combining medical massage-based techniques with decompression therapy and laser therapy for "amazing results" — her personal philosophy centers on treatments aimed at eradicating patients' conditions long term.

“There’s a whole field where we can address the soft tissue injuries that cause lifelong pain,” she explains. “I went in this direction because it's an area of rehabilitation not addressed and why so many people live in pain.”

She says she treats all types of fasciitis, tendonitis and strains. “These techniques aren't only quick and effective for sports injuries, but also for hard-to-treat cases involving disc herniations and nerve impingements,” she says. “Through years of continuing education and perfecting the techniques to address these conditions, I can treat them and prevent them from coming back.”

She works with active women of all ages and especially identifies with her patients. “I have experienced firsthand all kinds of strains and injuries from overuse and just pushing myself too hard at times,” she says, “so I understand how to treat these women and get them out of pain quickly and efficiently.”

CONTINUED > 19 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/NEWTOWN MAY 2023

During the summer, the doctor says she sees a rise in sports injuries related to outdoor activities. She finds athletic injuries, such as strains, typically stem from overuse or repetitive stress on the joints and surrounding soft tissues. The physician's chosen form of treatment gets to the root, using soft tissue therapies before strengthening or stabilization exercises.

“The soft tissue therapies I use were specifically designed for athletes to decrease scar tissue and adhesions and reduce pain,” she explains.

Pickleball, says the doctor, has seen a recent rise in popularity. This likely contributes to increased cases of tennis elbow, described by pain in the lateral part of elbows stemming from a strain in the muscles that extend the wrist. The physician's chosen treatment method decreases development of scar tissue using active release techniques. “Combined with Kinesio tape and laser therapy, which cuts healing time in half, these weekend warriors can return quickly to the court," she says.

The proof comes directly from her patients. "I have patients who have long struggled with their conditions often say they're surprised they never received this type of treatment before,” she says. “I've had patients who've suffered for years with tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis, and after a couple of weeks of treatment, they no longer experience pain.”

JUSTICE, EQUITY, PROGRESS, CONNECTING, HEALING

NEW BOOK EXPLORES HOW WOMEN ARE GAME-CHANGERS IN TODAY'S SOCIETY

Local business and community leaders have been reviewing the new book  We Rise in Power: Amplifying Women of Color and Our Voices for Change. It was co-written by a Newtown resident and released on International Women's Day.

Co-authored by Michelle El Khoury and Lisa Pinnock in collaboration with a dozen female contributors from throughout North America, this anthology shares personal stories of challenge, resilience and triumph. The authors say the book brings together a group of diverse women who are advocates for social change, and that it offers pathways and strategies for transformative actions.

The book's intent is also stated as:  "making 'representation' the norm rather than the after-thought."

Indeed, United Way of Bucks County CEO Marissa Christie recently celebrated the book through a discussion held at Guru’s Fine Indian Cuisine in Newtown.

Regarding the co-authors: Newtown resident Michelle is a former pharmaceutical executive with more than 20 years of health care experience. She says her journey, coupled with her background and passion for yoga, led her to open Yogamazia as a yoga studio in Richboro. She now uses yoga as a doorway for discussions on race, gender and other social inequities to help empower the future generation of leaders. She states she is grateful to serve as a global ambassador for Yoga Gives Back. She is also a health and wellness educator with Integrative Health at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Lisa is a teacher and musician who is skilled in choral, piano, vocal instruction, music education, and singing, in addition to being an author. She graduated from the University of TorontoOntario Institute for Studies in Education, and has experience with working in the education management industry. She often states it is so powerful to have trust in one's own intuition.

"Our greatest trials are what shape us in ways that aren't often seen at first glance," Lisa says. "Like an iceberg, what lies beneath the surface is worthy of our attention. Learning to trust our inner light -- our knowingness -- will always illuminate the path forward."

We Rise In Power is available for $19.95 where books are sold, or fortunately can be secured locally through Commonplace Reader in Yardley. The bookstore's owner, Liz Young, says this compilation is a great conversation or discussion starter. "It's important to view the world in different ways, and this book helps broaden our horizons. Because of the co-author's local connection, it also makes it an interesting book for us to carry," she adds.

REINVENTING SPACES FOR HER

ADVICE EDITORIAL: WAYS TO ENJOY A HOME EVEN MORE FROM INTERIOR DESIGN CONSULTANT DONNA HOFFMAN

There comes a time when many a-design-loving woman casts a sharp look around a house to ponder how to increase the per-square-foot pleasure factor it provides each day. Is it possible to enjoy a home MORE? The answer is most usually yes, and the solution easily arises from transforming a less-used space from its original or former iteration into something else.

The spare bedroom is a great place to start. Some common reinventions clients love include:

• Reclaiming a now unused kid’s bedroom as a yoga studio or gym.

• Converting a spare bedroom into a craft room or art studio.

• Converting a guest room into a tricked-out dressing room or closet, possibly knocking down a wall to provide access from the primary bedroom.

• Reinventing a spare bedroom into a dual-use home office and guest room.

Rarely used formal living rooms are another great place to mine design gold. By definition, a formal living room is a contained space with three walls, not an open living room that spills into a dining room. For this exercise, the formal living room usually found in a center hall Colonial house can yield great opportunity, with any of these options to convert it into:

• A library/sitting room, adding beautiful millwork and built-in cabinetry for concealed workspace and a niched area for lounge seating and voila: half living room/half personal space.

• A music room with ample space for a handsome baby grand piano and some soft seating.

• A decked-out lady’s home office that is replete with style and function, bells and whistles, perfect for work from home and beautiful enough to hold court at the front of the house.

RIGHT: Finding just-right decor accents and having hidden storage can be so rewarding.

Formal dining rooms that are 'all look but no touch,' clearly are more limited in their conversion options, but in some cases, they can become extensions of a kitchen for the cook who craves a bigger, gourmet kitchen experience. This option requires a wrecking ball and designer/architect/builder, but the results when well done can be quite good.

Repurposing and redesigning for the lady of the house is an excellent use of design budget. Spinning little used spaces into an often-used, always-loved space is as gratifying as it is life-enhancing. What a perfect way to leverage every inch of square footage, and every penny in the mortgage, all to support elevated living.

Lift the glass! Here’s to the pendulum swing from glum to glorious in the transformation of what was, into what IS. Lean into what brings the highest joy at this present moment in a present home. The results will be something to toast.

Happy Mother’s Day.

COURT SPORTS PACKAGE INVITES TRAVELERS TO HIT STONE HARBOR’S PICKLEBALL, TENNIS COURTS IN LUXURIOUS STYLE

Staffs of the award-winning luxury boutique hotel in Stone Harbor, The Reeds at Shelter Haven, and resort wear brand, Lilly Pulitzer, are partnering to pamper guests through a new Courts Sports package now through October.

“With the increased interest in racquet sports, like pickleball, and our close proximity to Stone Harbor’s beloved court facilities, The Reeds is continuing our ongoing relationship with Stone Harbor Recreation this year, enhanced by our new partnership with Lilly Pulitzer,” says Ron Gorodesky, founder/ CEO of New Hope-based Refined Hospitality.

When booking the Court Sports package, guests are prompted to select a curated assortment of Lilly Pulitzer activewear, including tops, skirts, leggings and accessories in both new and fan-favorite prints and colors, including the lively, spring 2023 Holding Court capsule collection, which was handpicked for The Reeds’ guests.

THE FULL REEDS’ COURT SPORTS PACKAGE INCLUDES:

• Two-night stay at one of The Reeds’ coastal chic guest rooms or suites.

• Selection of Lilly Pulitzer’s court sports apparel, delivered in-room upon arrival (available at retail value).

• Welcome amenities featuring pre-and-post-game essentials, including water bottles, energy bars, sunscreen and tennis balls.

• Court reservations for tennis or pickleball at Stone Harbor Recreation, including use of racquets.

• Transportation to/from Stone Harbor Recreation’s pickleball and tennis courts.

• $100 daily dinner credit at The Reeds dining venues, including Sax and Water Star Grille.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Lilly Pulitzer introduced a new Print with Purpose: Holding Court. Honoring 50 trailblazing years of the Women’s Tennis Association, the print supports WTA charities in their work to empower girls and women through creating sunshine and inspiring future generations. Furthermore, Lilly Pulitzer made a $50,000 donation to WTA Charities as part of their partnership.
