he holiday are here and with it the many opportunities to celebrate the season. I hope you will take a look at our Holiday Happenings feature and plan to attend some of the lovely offerings right here in our community. Not many people live around a famous Christmas boat parade called "One of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation" by the New York Times. The 109th Newport Beach Boat Parade and Ring of Lights home competition is such a lovely tradition. Another fun affair for the family is the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort's "Lighting of the Bay" the day after Thanksgiving, and tree lighting ceremonies abound at Balboa Bay Resort, Fashion Island and South Coast Plaza. Sherman Gardens' "Nights of 1,000 Lights" is back for a fourth year, the Corona del Mar Christmas Walk draws the entire family, and the Balboa Island Holiday Home Tour offers a peek at nine beautifully decorated island homes. I added one out-of-town holiday extravaganza this year, since it is celebrating its 25th anniversary–Mission Inn's "Festival of Lights" in Riverside. If you like a mulled wine for the holidays, Chef Josef Lageder offers the recipe for a European one called Glühwein, which is popular in the German-speaking countries and the Alsace region of France. Paired with a soft-center chocolate torte will tingle your tastebuds! Maybe the Holy Land is on your bucket list, and, if so, you will enjoy our feature travel story on "Israel: The Land of Milk and Honey." Jerusalem is a combination of what it was 2,000 years ago and what it is today, a vibrant city. Just a day trip to Petra in Jordan will amaze you with its temples, homes and tombs carved into the sides of an enormous canyon. Deirdre Michalski's Parting Thoughts column will offer some tips to balancing out the holidays when you have children who are grown and married. She has some good suggestions as to how to make it work for everyone. In closing, however you choose to celebrate the season, make it meaningful and fun.

Surrounding the Mount is a wall that was constructed when the second Temple was erected. A section of this wall is called the “Western Wall” and is one of the holiest sites for prayer, known as the “gate to heaven.” The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is in the Christian Quarter of the Old City and is revered as the location where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. In addition to the holy sites, the Old City offers a plethora of interesting markets, shops and amazing rooftop views. With regard to lodging, each property has its own unique attributes. The historic King David Hotel has breathtaking views of the old city, the Mamilla is more contemporary and the Waldorf-Astoria is the newest with the most luxurious rooms. An experienced guide is essential to explore this complex destination, as there are many other historic and archaeological sites to visit. Beyond Jerusalem, there are countless wonders. A few hours away lies the fortress of Masada, built by Herod on a desert mountain. This is where 1000 Jewish rebels committed suicide with their families instead of facing massacre at the hands of the Romans in 73 AD. Continuing farther into the desert, you can literally float in the saltwater Dead Sea, a therapeutic inland sea that overlooks Jordan, and a day trip to Jordan to see the ancient site of Petra is a must. Around 300 BC, temples and structures were carved into the sides of Petra’s enormous canyon, the most famous of which is the ornate Greek façade of the “Treasury.” The tableau here is simply magnificent. Finish your trip in dynamic Tel Aviv, where you can experience daily Israeli life, not to mention a bustling restaurant and nightlife scene. An expert guide can accompany you though the colorful Machenudea food market, escort you to local specialty shops and arrange to enjoy dinner with an Israeli family in their private home in the old city of Jaffa. The Cove also houses its own incubator, Wayfinder, which is open to UCI students,

faculty, alumni or anyone with some sort of connection to UCI. So far, 60 startups have participated in the Wayfinder program and 120 start-ups have licensed UC Irvine-affiliated research. That is slightly short of UC Berkeley's 200 startups licensing research from the university, but it's not far behind, especially considering that Wayfinder has been operating for less than two years. Why did it take until 2015 for UCI to start something like this? Everyone at The Cove credits Chancellor Howard Gillman with providing the push to bring The Cove into existence. The academic environment can move slowly in comparison to the business world. One of Gillman's goals with The Cove is to speed up the process of bringing intellectual property to market. This commitment to business engagement is embedded in the mission of everyone involved in The Cove. "We want to gain the reputation as the easiest public university to do business with," Sudek says. About one-third of the businesses The Cove programs and events are targeting for investment, collaboration or mentoring are medical device and life science-relatedâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;one-third engineering and one-third everything else. UCI already had strong relationships with Beckman Laser Institute, Allergan, Edwards Life Sciences Corp. and many other companies with a large local presence. The next natural step was to build on those relationships and establish a hub for start-up incubation. The push to bring new technologies to market and create new businesses is especially critical to the future of Orange County's economy. Over the past decade, well-paid technology jobs have been on the decline here. One reason is that start-up companies formed in Orange County often leave the area to head north to Silicon Valley for financial support and access to talent. The Cove and the UCI Applied Innovation Center aim to be the county's one-stop shop for tech start-ups so they can get what they need right here, stay, grow their companies, and hire locally.
