SeptemberStyle Issue

Dear Reader,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creative energy.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Murfreesboro to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

EYE FOR Fashion

MTSU DISSERTATION FELLOW USES PASSION FOR FASHION IN CLASSROOM

ARTICLE BY NANCY DEGENNARO AND DEANN HAYS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J INTINTOLI

Fashion has always been a draw for recent Middle Tennessee State University Diversity Dissertation Fellow Nia Allen.

“I always had a keen sense of style, and it’s my own style,” said Allen, who taught in MTSU’s Textiles, Merchandising and Design program from 2023 through this summer as part of a fellowship while she completed her Ph.D. dissertation through a program at Texas Tech University.

While she’s always had an eye for fashion, it wasn’t her initial career path. Allen began as a business major, but after failing her sophomore accounting class, she knew she had to do something different.

“I remember my friend telling me they thought I was already a fashion major,” Allen said. “I felt like that was a sign for me to switch my major. When I got into my major, I realized that’s what I needed to do.”

After earning her undergraduate degree from Clark Atlanta University, a historically Black colleges and universities, or HBCUs, she went on to earn her Master of Communication degree from Loyola University in Chicago and a Master of Fashion Industry Studies from Kent State University in Ohio, which is one of the top-rated fashion schools in the United States.

“I always had a keen sense of style, and it’s my own style.”

She gained experience in the luxury fashion industry working for Gucci and Nordstrom. For her master’s thesis at Kent State, she launched a luxury pop-up shop that catered to Black women, all while juggling motherhood.

“I think I’m the type of mom who wants my son to be around for every moment, so he sees the sacrifice that it took, so I bring him along,” Allen said. “I also want him to be way more than I am.”

When Allen needed to expand her research for her Ph.D., she sought out a fellowship that would provide funding for her dissertation, “Luxury of Choice: Black Women and Their Relationship with Luxury Fashion.”

Allen said the atmosphere at MTSU was welcoming. It was near the iconic fashion scene in Atlanta and even closer to the emerging industry in Nashville.

After meeting College of Liberal Arts Dean Leah Lyons, who is on the Diversity Dissertation Fellowship committee, she knew MTSU was the place for her.

“When I did my interview, I felt like they believed in my studying, and I felt like I could make a difference at MTSU,” Allen said. “So, it really felt serendipitous.”

Lyons said the committee felt Allen was a perfect fit.

“She is enthusiastic, and her enthusiasm is contagious,” Lyons said. “We also knew she would be a good colleague to the cohort of scholars participating in the program. She brought more to the fellowship than we could have imagined.”

Allen said she enjoyed teaching at MTSU and plans to continue teaching in higher education.

“I loved teaching at MTSU,” she said. “I believe in giving my students hands-on experiences, so I took them to a textile show in Nashville. I had them speak to buyers in the fashion industry and planned the spring event with fashion icon Brandice Daniel.”

Not only has Allen enjoyed her time at MTSU, but the move has been life-changing for her family, too.

“We have blossomed here,” she said. “I believe it was ordained for me to be here. It’s a testament of how God works. But it’s not about getting somewhere. You have to bloom where you’re planted.”

Allen plans to start her own fashion and media company and advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the fashion industry.

“Women really do help each other and it’s important when you go into the world. You need to learn to become good sisters.”

Homes with Heart: Jamie Taylor’s Personalized Approach to Interior Design
ARTICLE BY MATILYN JENNINGS PHOTOGRAPHY BY VARIOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS

Jamie Taylor's journey to founding J Taylor Designs was one of organic growth and passion for design. After working with a local design firm, Jamie moved into the lumber supply industry, which was a pivotal moment as builders sought her expertise for custom house plans. After building relationships and expanding her construction knowledge, Jamie started her design firm in 2009.

As head of J Taylor Designs, Jamie’s inspiration comes from the unique needs and preferences of her clients, fueling her creativity to produce distinctive homes.

Jamie draws immense inspiration from coastal and historical-style homes from her travels. "These architectural styles exude character and depth, each telling its own story," said Jamie. "When I encounter an old home with a rich narrative, it ignites my creativity to reinterpret it for a newer home. Revitalizing old homes or styles for a new generation is deeply rewarding."

Jamie’s design philosophy centers on understanding and responding to clients' needs, creating timeless exteriors that evolve with the family. She prioritizes client engagement from the start through

comprehensive questionnaires and inspirational photos to set a strong foundation for collaboration.

One standout project involved designing a farm home with stunning views. The challenge of maintaining uninterrupted sightlines led to a creative placement of rooms to preserve views of the pond and sunrise over the river.

Over the years, Jamie has worked with clients who truly needed someone to listen and understand their family’s unique needs.

Whether it’s parents caring for disabled children or adults seeking a comfortable space for their elderly parents to live out their lives, these are the moments when conventional design principles take a backseat to personalized solutions.

"It's these families that leave a lasting impact on me," said Jamie. "The gratitude they express or the heartfelt hug they give show me they felt heard and understood. Knowing that the home we design will truly serve them reminds me why I do what I do."
