Thankful During 2025

What are you thankful for this year? This season encourages us to pause, embrace the present and reflect on the people and moments that bring us joy. This month, we hope your home is filled with the aroma of delicious foods and freshly baked pies, the sounds of laughter around the table, watching (or playing) football and the feeling of gratitude in your hearts.

As we prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s not dwell on possessions or accolades but on the connections we nurture and the good we do for others. As always, thanks for reading, and rest assured that we appreciate all of you.

Wishing you and your family a Thanksgiving filled with gratitude, joy and grace.

Thankful Hearts, In-Home Care, Warm Smiles

When Kelly and Kevin Fehr started Amada Senior Care during 2014, they remember being guided by a bold vision to provide amazing, much-needed services to seniors while giving back to their community.

Kevin says, “My grandfather was one of the most influential people in my life. He lived to be 102, and for the last eight years of his life received excellent full-time, in-home care. The caregivers at his bedside were like angels. It was truly a wonderful experience. This care benefited my grandfather to be sure, but it also allowed my mother and uncle to be a true daughter and son, rather than caregivers.”

“Pop-Pop’s wish was to stay in the home he built himself in the 1950s,” Kelly adds. “In-home care made it possible for that wish to come true.”

Eleven years later, the Fehrs and Amada Senior Care team members believe they've achieved that envisioned vision. This nonmedical home care company helps seniors or adults with disabilities in the privacy and comfort of their residences. The assistance ranges from personal hygienic care and ensuring home safety to light housekeeping and meal preparation, transportation services or other activities that improve client's overall quality of life while maintaining independence in their homes.

Notably, Kevin says they serve both civilians and US veterans in eight counties throughout Middle Tennessee from their Murfreesboro headquarters at 402 Uptown Square.

"Our Amada Senior Care team is very thankful to give back by providing complimentary services through the VA hospitals in Murfreesboro and Nashville. Our caregivers know and respect the sacrifice that these veterans made, and they bend over backwards to provide them with the best care possible," he says as the company's president and CEO

Those military veteran-specific services can include help with living in a senior living community of their choice; receiving additional in-home care services; securing health care benefits that are financial covered with no repayment required; and receiving home care benefits paid directly by the US treasury on a tax-free basis.

As a Certified Dementia Practitioner, Kevin spearheads the company's business development. He says this licensure allowed him to develop a robust dementia training initiative for all of Amada’s caregivers, and provides him with opportunities to consult both families and physicians on the differential diagnosis of dementias.

Kelly oversees Amada Senior Care’s management and processes as chief operating officer. She says, "Our talented team learned early on in their journey that culture is the biggest attribute to the success of a company."

During several ways to acknowledge contributions of the company's employees, the Fehrs host an annual “Caregiver Appreciation Week” at their office. Kelly cooks meals for the caregivers and serves them lunch or dinner as a small way to say thanks for doing a great job.

They also acknowledge an Employee of the Month with a monetary gift, and have conducted a Caregiver Support Conference in Murfreesboro. To these collective ends, Amada Senior Care has earned both “A Great Place to Work” and “Top Places to Work” community designations.

“We’ve dedicated our careers to caregiving. We want your family to be an extended part of ours.”
~Kevin and Kelly Fehr, Amada Senior Care founders and co-owners.
“At Amada Senior Care, we believe caregiving is more than a profession. It’s a calling rooted in compassion, commitment and competence. We proudly offer Amada National Caregiver Value Awards that recognize outstanding employees who embody the very best of caregiving.”

The Fehrs take serious any opportunities to improve caregiving and community-driven services. "Building a successful company is important, but that pales in comparison to giving back to our community. Whether it’s serving on nonprofit boards, volunteering our time with service-oriented organizations or financially supporting efforts that are important to our core values like with the Alzheimer’s Association, American Red Cross and Alzheimer’s Tennessee, we keep priorities in the right place," explains Kelly.

Kevin states their philosophy is simple: the more they earn, the more they give back. "Being a part of helping families during difficult times in their lives has been extremely rewarding. We have a responsibility to provide exceptional service to our clients, while philanthropically giving back and supporting our community," says Kevin.

"It’s who we are, it’s what we do."

Being thankful for an amazing family, business and community ties is "an attribute that should never be taken lightly," asserts this compassionate duo who want to enhance lifestyle choices that support healthy, quality-filled aging.

Treating Sleep Apnea Without Masks

Hunter Arnaud, M.D., Otolaryngologist, MMC’s Comprehensive ENT Department.

Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter Team Succeeds With Relief Device And Surgical Procedure

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 30 million Americans, according to American Medical Association sources. When left untreated, medical experts confirm OSA can cause strokes, heart attacks, memory loss, vehicle and workplace accidents or worsen moods, even prompting death over time. Now, Murfreesboro Medical Clinic’s newest ENT physician is leading the way to treat and alleviate this life-threatening condition.

During December 2024, Hunter Arnaud, M.D., Otolaryngologist, MMC’s Comprehensive ENT Department, completed the first Inspire procedure for OSA at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter (MMC). Inspire is an FDAapproved OSA treatment option for people who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

“I couldn't be more excited to bring this revolutionary technology to Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee, and I couldn't be prouder of the incredible team here at MMC that made it possible,” he says. “It's a privilege to care for our wonderful patients and help restore their sleep and day-to-day lives.”

To date, he's assisted 13 sleep-deprived patients through the new Inspire procedure.

Daytime tiredness is often blamed on aging and changes in lifestyle, rather than a disorder of sleep, until one is having many episodes of sleep apnea per hour, resulting in being tired all the time or falling asleep while driving.

Dr. Arnaud says OSA occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout nights and causes poor, disruptive sleep.

The Inspire device works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. Patients uses a small, handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they awake.

Dr. Arnaud says the Inspire system is implanted during a short, outpatient procedure. The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through two small incisions. "Most patients return home the same day and take over-the-counter pain medications to manage pain as needed."

The safety and efficacy of Inspire was evaluated during a STAR clinical trial, according to the clinic's professionals. Five-year STAR trial outcomes show patients using Inspire experience significant reductions in sleep apnea events and significant improvements in quality-of-life measures. There've been 150-plus peer-reviewed

publications on Inspire, showing results consistent with those seen in the STAR trial.

Dr. Arnaud is a board-eligible physician skilled in Otolaryngology (ENT). His expertise includes adult and pediatric otolaryngology, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, cochlear implants, nasal and sinus surgery, head and neck surgery and the Inspire sleep apnea implant. He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and completed his Residency in Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

"My hometown doc influenced me and made me want to become a doctor, seeing the relationships he had and how he

impacted people in their time of need. I wanted to be that type of cornerstone for others, too," explains Dr. Arnaud.

Joey Peay, CEO of MMC, notes, “Dr. Arnaud's ability to perform the Inspire procedure in Murfreesboro further demonstrates the clinic’s commitment to bringing state-of-the-art medical treatments to our community. We'll continue to encourage our physicians to bring innovative procedures and techniques to benefit our patients.”

ROSCOE BROWN HEATING, COOLING, PLUMBING BUSINESS SPANS THREE FAMILY GENERATIONS OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY ROSCOE BROWN, INC.

Roscoe Brown with his wife, Annabelle, and their grandson Norman Brown, now heading the company.

Since 1940, Roscoe Brown, Inc., has been a trusted company in heating, cooling and plumbing for Middle Tennessee homeowners and businesses. Throughout the years, the group's mission has been to accurately and honestly assess, install and repair HVAC and plumbing systems.

The business started with its namesake, Roscoe, transferring his talent and expertise in tin work to the heating field, then adding air conditioning. That's back when customers dialed TW 3-6972 to reach him in Murfreesboro. The company's now owned by Roscoe's grandson, Norman Brown.

"We take our hometown roots seriously because our friends and neighbors deserve the best service for their HVAC and plumbing needs," says Norman.

Those installation and repair services include both residential and commercial solutions for heating, furnaces, heat pumps, indoor air quality, plumbing, leak detection, drain services with camera inspections, water filtration, hydro-jetting, rooter services, cooling, filters, generators and emergencies.

Supporting community endeavors is an ongoing objective of the Roscoe Brown staff, spanning the installation of an air-conditioning system for the cafeteria at Middle Tennessee Christian

School after it was founded in 1960 to presently donating funds to Habitat For Humanity.

Recently, Roscoe Brown's call center manager, Susan Couch, and HVAC field supervisor, Nathan Sims, visited preschoolers at First Presbyterian Church of Murfreesboro. The kids received goody bags and got to touch real HVAC tools and equipment. Susan and Nathan stated the youths' curiosity and excitement made the visit extra special, adding: "They may not be old enough for our SPARK Academy that trains tradespeople [Roscoe Brown’s internal, state-accredited apprenticeship program] but it’s never too early to spark interest in the trades. We love connecting with the next generation."

To impart industry updates or seasonal tips, Teresa Ojeda, director of marketing/public relations at Roscoe Brown, also conducts live discussions online.

As this family-operated crew is fond of stating: Discover the Roscoe Brown difference, which is built on a legacy of trust, innovation and genuine community commitment.

16th Annual Charity Run/ Walk Race Set For Nov. 27 In Downtown Murfreesboro Civic Plaza

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

realty report

September often brings a natural slowdown in the real estate market as families get back into school routines and fall activities. This year was no exception, with numbers dipping compared to August. But while closings and median prices edged down, the market continues to show healthy movement and plenty of opportunity for both buyers and sellers. Is This Cause for Concern? Not at all. Even in the peak markets of 2021 and 2022, September historically saw prices dip from August. What we’re seeing now is a natural seasonal adjustment, combined with a market that continues to lean in favor of buyers. Sellers are adjusting by reducing prices or offering concessions. Buyers are benefiting from more options and negotiating power. Closings are still happening every day, proving that real estate in Middle Tennessee remains active and resilient.

Our Advice Moving Forward For Buyers: Take advantage of higher inventory and motivated sellers to find a home that fits your needs. For Sellers: Work with a trusted agent to price strategically and stand out in a competitive market.
