LIFE + CULTURE IN THE KITCHEN WITH ALEX BELEW HEALTH + WELLNESS
REDEFINING MEN’S AESTHETICS
Of course, this month all eyes are on "fathers," taking the time to celebrate what they mean to us and honoring their presence in our lives.
I'll never forget the time when I was a little girl and my dad was my whole world. He never dismissed an opportunity to draw with me and teach me how to cook in the kitchen. To this day my dad will get right down on the floor with my own girls and retreat to being a 5-year-old again. There is something light-hearted about fathers to their daughters; nothing else can compare. I love watching my husband's bond grow with our girls. From "Daddy" to "bruh," you have to laugh sometimes. (haha).
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
We loved sharing about so many incredible men in our community this month! Take a moment to read about Alex Belew, one of our own who recently won Hell's Kitchen and how his favorite place to cook is right at home with his wife and two adorable boys. If you haven't discovered TN Golf Station yet, it's the absolute perfect mid-day getaway for that guy in your life and JP will take great care of him!
We hope you take the time to recognize those men in your life who have made a difference regardless of the role they have played. Happy Father's Day!

For Murfreesboro resident Alex Belew, life looks much different than it did a year ago. Since being named winner of season 21 of the hit TV show Hell’s Kitchen, life has been a whirlwind full of new and exciting opportunities for Belew.
“When I walked out that door, it was just disbelief,” describing the emotion he felt in the final episode when he was announced the winner of the reality culinary show. “Gordon’s never picked an older person. I’m the oldest person to win by five years, six years…nobody over 35 has ever won…Watching the show, a lot of people were like, ‘We knew you were going to win from day one,’ but living it, it never felt like that. There was never a moment where I was like, ‘I’ve got this thing in the bag.’ That was never a thought. It was just always anxiety...”
Belew is still getting used to getting recognized by fans—even getting messages from fans all the way in Malaysia—and the travel that comes
with this new chapter of life “[In the past] I was on a plane once every other year, now I’m on a plane three times a month,” he says of flying back and forth to be in the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant in Atlantic City and other culinary events.
From the time he was young, Belew has always found himself in the kitchen. He learned the basics of cooking while watching his grandmother as a child. “I was always in the kitchen with her while she was making biscuits and pancakes and fried okra…” he remembers. “The food was always so delicious; I wanted to know how she got it from the beginning to the end.”
This childhood curiosity led to a job in the café at Old Time Pottery when he was 14 and then eventually to his first taste of the restaurant world, working as a server at Demos’ when he was 17. Belew later began catering private dinners in private homes and then leaped to begin culinary school. CONTINUED >
Belew is a truly well-rounded chef who has seen every facet of the business. In addition to continuing his catering business—which he did for 12 years—after graduating from culinary school, he was contacted by his former principal to teach culinary arts at Blackman High School, where his students won the National Restaurant Association’s Prostart Championship in 2014.
“It was one of the most rewarding three years of my life, and honestly, teaching culinary arts in high school is probably the sole reason I am where I am because it made me think so far out of the box,” he explains. “Because every day I wanted to teach those kids something brand new, which meant I had to teach myself something brand new….” He also shares that he was challenged by having to get creative working with a meager budget of only $1,500 a year to buy groceries for five classes worth of students.
After three years of teaching, he continued catering, worked at Nashville restaurants such as the renowned Husk, and began selling out restaurant pop-ups in 2016, but one of his goals was always his restaurant.
“My plan has always been since I was like 12 or 14 to have a restaurant on the square in Murfreesboro; that was always my dream,” he shares. “I grew up on Second Ave. off Main Street. My mom and I rode our bikes down the square…” So he took over the space where The Hoof BBQ previously resided to create Dallas & Jane, his restaurant named in honor of his grandparents. While he had to close the restaurant early in the pandemic, it opened the doors for something new when he decided to apply to be on Hell’s Kitchen. Being turned down for the show back in 2013 because producers said he was “too nice,” he applied again and caught their attention with his application. After a six-month vetting process, he secured his spot as a contestant on the show, where he competed non-stop for five weeks, ultimately winning the competition.
When asked to sum up his Hell’s Kitchen experience in a couple of words, he replies without hesitation: “Amazing. I’d do it again. Especially knowing what I know now…I thrived better in it than I thought I would. I enjoyed the go-go-go aspect. Every minute was packed full of something to do….”
While he may be traveling the world now and getting used to the term “celebrity chef,” the ever-humble Belew stays grounded in his Murfreesboro roots and his wife and sons. He says his two sons, ages six and eight, are some of his toughest critics when it comes to his cooking.
“I’ve been here a majority of my life. I can’t go anywhere without seeing someone that I went to elementary school with. I’ve been here since I was four, so that’s all I know…I grew up on Second Avenue, on Main Street. I went to Riverdale, Mitchell-Neilson, and Central Middle School back when there was just one middle school. It’s my hometown. The people are great. There are a lot of new people here now, though. It’s very strange how fast we’re growing…It’s my home. I love it here…” CONTINUED >
Aesthetics are usually associated with women in the modern era, but historical evidence shows that men have also been working to improve their appearances for centuries. The myth that cosmetic procedures are only for females is a misconception The ReFinery is working to debunk. As the market for minimally-invasive products and techniques continues to grow, so does the interest from men. Owner Dr. James LaPere shares, “It’s okay for a guy not to like a wrinkle or two. I can make those go away.” Botox for males, also called “Brotox,” is administered in a specialized way that accentuates a more masculine, chiseled appearance.
Dr. LaPere is board-certified in Family Medicine and has completed additional anti-aging and health optimization training. In addition to cosmetic procedures, he helps patients with acute or chronic conditions, including hormone replacement therapy. Dr. LaPere enjoys getting to know his clients through a comprehensive examination and discussion of medical history to help them feel their best. Treating the whole person takes time, so all appointments are face-to-face and at least 30 minutes. Labs and medications are provided in-office to help get clients to a therapeutic level with a resolution of symptoms, and it saves a trip to the pharmacy. Dr. LaPere is also known for his niche work with IFBB professional athletes. His specialized knowledge enables him to work with these performers and their trainers in a non-judgmental atmosphere while monitoring their health to keep them safely operating at peak levels.
Hair removal is another service men frequently sought that was formerly attributed to only women. Males commonly request to eliminate hair on the back of their neck and shoulders, but any area of the body is possible. Laser hair removal is a more invasive treatment, but The ReFinery uses a diode laser that is safe for all skin and hair types. Clients notice an immediate effect, with full results typically achieved after six sessions.
The interest in men’s weight loss has seen an uptick and has become one of their most popular services, even without stimulant medications. Instead, after a full health review, clients receive semaglutide, which has been shown to help patients lose 8-10 pounds per month. The ReFinery’s weight loss package is affordable and includes office visits, medication, and a dietary plan. During a routine visit, Dr. LaPere counsels patients on good eating habits and monitors their protein intake and muscle mass.

With injectable semaglutide, a non-stimulant medication, clients lose an average of eight to ten pounds per month. This medication has also been shown to reduce food cravings and improve insulin resistance.
Some clients prefer treatment for a specific body area where stubborn, unwanted fatty deposits reside. For men, the most common areas are under the chin, chest, and waistline.
HORMONE THERAPY:
The ReFinery can help men combat the symptoms associated with age-related decreases in testosterone. All labs and medications are provided in-office to get you feeling better quickly and discreetly.
“THE FAMILY ATMOSPHERE IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE THIS LOCATION UNIQUE. IN FACT, UPON ENTERING THE OFFICE, YOU IMMEDIATELY NOTICE THAT IT FEELS MORE LIKE AN UPSCALE CLUB OR BOUTIQUE THAN A MEDICAL PRACTICE. CLIENTS ALSO COMMENT ON THE PERSONALIZED CARE AND ATTENTION THEY RECEIVE FROM THE STAFF.”
These can be treated in the office with Lipodissolve, which destroys and eliminates fat cells, with results visible in just a few weeks.
The ReFinery recently celebrated its first anniversary. They are a family-run practice with Dr. LaPere as the primary provider, his wife, Ceseley, as the office manager, and their long-time friend, Tina, as a technician with 25+ years of experience. The family atmosphere is one of the things that make this location unique. In fact, upon entering the office, you immediately notice that it feels more like an upscale club or boutique than a medical practice. Clients also comment on the personalized care and attention they receive from the staff. One patient said, “I appreciate their attention to detail, professionalism and kindness. I am also very pleased with my outcome. Not only will I be going back, my wife will be going as well!”
LASER HAIR REMOVAL:
A diode laser is used to remove hair in the desired area. Results are noticeable immediately, with permanent results after six sessions.
BOTOX & FILLERS:
Dr. LaPere personally administers all injectables using a different technique for men than women to enhance their masculine and chiseled features.
Dr. James LaPere served as an Air Force medic for 11 years before becoming board-certified in Family Medicine. He completed multiple post-graduate trainings in cosmetics, anti-aging, hormone therapy, and health optimization and is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He currently balances his time between The ReFinery and Stonecrest Medical Center. Dr. LaPere has been married for over 20 years and has four beautiful children.
How “Water Wizard” Jagger Williams turned a part-time summer job into a full-time power washing career
As far as summer jobs are concerned, there wasn’t anything particularly remarkable about it. As a high school student, Jagger Williams simply wanted to have something to do where he could be outside, provide a good service at a fair price and make a little money. So he acquired some power washing equipment and set out to clean the exterior of homes around the neighborhood.
Then, little by little, his business began to grow. By the time he graduated from Siegel High School in 2015, the aspiring marketing executive had to schedule his full-time college classes around his part-time “summer” job. “My dad always said that the smart thing to do was to be in industries that have a need,” says Williams. “And there’s always a need for power washing. I combined that with my passion for marketing to make sure there’s a ‘want’ to go with the ‘need.’”
Today, that modest summer job is Waterly, Co., a Murfreesboro-based small business that cleans the exterior surfaces of residential and commercial structures throughout the city and beyond. During peak season, it’s not unusual for Williams and his full-time staff of four to tackle more than a dozen jobs a day.
Williams, known to his regular clients as the “Water Wizard,” says there are practical reasons
to power wash your home. “Power washing will enhance your home’s curb appeal and do so more affordably than any other exterior upgrade,” he says. “And the process that we use will last for years. I like to compare it to new landscaping. Fresh mulch looks awesome the day it’s done, but it must be maintained. Our treatments will look great 3-4 years down the road. It makes a great first impression on guests or if you’re putting your house on the market. And your HOA will love you!”
One of the differentiators between Waterly and its competitors is its ability to work with newer concrete. “Not everyone is comfortable with it because it’s impressionable, and too much pressure can leave marks or remove the top layer,” says Williams. “We make judgment calls regarding how much to dilute chemicals and how much pressure to use.”
Williams prices jobs by the square foot and, in addition to your home, can wash roofs, pool decks and seal and stain concrete and wood surfaces. Typically, a freestanding 3,000-square-foot home can be power washed in less than two hours. He also offers maintenance plans for customers who want their homes power washed every couple of years.
Jagger Williams recommends investing in your own power washer to rinse concrete and siding regularly. Rinse regularly, especially after mowing the lawn when glass clippings collect on the siding. However, go easy! Leave the heavy-duty power washing to the pros.
Applying outdoor bleach to your surfaces can help them look fresher, longer. Williams recommends using a sprayer with a 50/50 bleach-to-water solution that can be applied to surfaces like steps and brick prone to turning black or green.
Flimsy leaves seem harmless enough, but they can wreak havoc when they fall and settle on your deck or driveway. Leaves leave organic stains that cannot be removed without bleach. So use a leaf blower to remove.
Perhaps you’ve been told to moderate the amount of salt you consume. The same is true for your sidewalks and driveway. Applying salt to remove ice and snow can ruin the concrete beneath. Nature may have created the mess, but it’s best to let nature clean it up.
Imagine growing up inside a 200 sq. ft. room but not being able to play outside because the environment was unsafe. This is the reality facing many children around Rutherford County. In fact, there are currently over 1200 kids living in non-traditional housing, including motels, campgrounds, cars, and/ or doubled-up with another family.
This unsettling reality faced Joel Bigelow each week. He noticed a local non-profit organization serving a meal every Friday night at the motel located just outside the entrance to his job at the manufacturing plant. There were
hundreds in line, including an abundance of children. Knowing the area was a hot spot for sexual predators and drug activity, Joel and his wife, Jeannie Bigelow, knew they had to do something to help. Athletics has always been a big part of Bigelow’s life. He played football in high school and, as an adult, competed in ultramarathons and Iron Man events. He wanted to provide an opportunity for these children to safely enjoy time outside and experience the benefits that sports can offer. In 2015, Endure Athletics started with a Saturday

MARK PHOTOGRAPHYmorning program and a handful of kids from the motel. This regular weekly event gave kids a chance to receive a homemade hot breakfast, have fun, laugh, and enjoy being a kid in a safe space. The original goal was to simply be a place of refuge, love, and hope. That mission is still true today.
Bigelow had no idea how quickly Endure Athletics would grow. Sports provide a great opportunity for kids to build trust and open up about their struggles at school and with their families. For example, summer is a particular challenge for these kids. When class isn’t in session, they are mostly limited to their motel room, and nutritious meals aren’t always available. Thus, a nineweek summer camp program was created to meet these essential needs.
Summer Camp provides homeless children something to do daily, such as enrichment activities or events they might not otherwise have a chance to experience. This includes hiking, swimming, kayaking, water parks, zoo, and more. Bigelow recalls their first ice skating excursion, where several kids were apprehensive. This allowed them to try something new and overcome their fears together. Everyone had a great time, and it was a good bonding experience too.
Endure Athletics has now added age-specific, after-school programs for both elementary and middle school. Children receive transportation to and from the program, a hot meal, homework help, structured and unstructured physical activity time, and character-building and growth mindset lessons. The program is more individually-focused at the high school level, with mentorship, academic
support, and financial assistance for extra-curricular activities.
The reach over the last eight years has been quite impactful as they help kids break the cycle of generational poverty. The very first student who participated in their program is now 22 years old and finishing his last semester at Middle Tennessee State University. Lamarrious is a first-generation college student, and thanks to some help from The Endure Athletics Foundation, he will graduate 100% debt free. He says, “I was surrounded by people who wanted to see me succeed.”
Endure consistently serves 60+ children every week with the help of part-time staff and volunteers. All meals, programs and activities – even summer camp –are provided at no cost, thanks to community donors and partnerships. On average, it takes $49 per week to support a child in this program, but the lasting influence is priceless. A mom of four shares, “You are making an impact on them and are a positive male role model. Thank you for everything.”
This organization currently has an office at Nourish Food Bank, and they partner with local churches for events and activity space. Bigelow says they have grown to the point where they need a place of their own. The land has been purchased, and they are hoping to begin work on a new facility. Endure plans to be a permanent support system for homeless children in Rutherford County as they continue to bring light to some of the more challenging areas of the community. Learn more about the Champions Club at EndureAthletics.org.
“Being forced to stay inside made me lazy and antisocial. Endure’s summer program gave me something to look forward to every day and introduced me to other children.”
– Lamarrious, Endure Participant and Intern
JP Brown has expanded his boundless passion for golf by moving the game inside. The California native and former touring pro is the owner of TN Golf Station, a Murfreesboro entertainment venue where friends can gather to hone their skills on realistic golf simulators while enjoying the vibe of an authentic neighborhood bar and grill.
“With our concept, two people can play 18 holes in under an hour,” says Brown. “Your time commitment is literally cut in half. The simulator features high-definition technology with life-like graphics.
You hit a real ball that’s tracked by infrared cameras with no lag time. It’s extremely accurate and user-friendly.” Each of the three simulators can accommodate six players at a time. Clubs can be rented, but Brown says most players bring their own.
When Brown opened TN Golf Station last January, it marked the intersection of a life-changing experience with a lifelong dream. He moved to Murfreesboro
shortly after visiting friends in the area. Then he began scouting for a venue where he could establish his vision for a great place to hang out while enjoying a realistic golf experience. But the search was not without its setbacks. “I thought we had a location at the mall, but that didn’t work out,” says Brown. “I got in my car, and I was so mad! I pushed ‘home’ on my GPS, and it took me down this path, and I saw ‘for lease’ on this building. And a month later, I had the space.”
Serious golfers typically visit during the day to work on their games. When the sun goes down, it becomes one of Murfreesboro’s liveliest night spots and a great place for a Guys’ (or girls) Night Out. The facility can be rented for private engagements, and special promotions can be found on Facebook @TN.GolfStation.
TN Golf Station is located at 1276 NW Broad Street. For tee times or more information, call 615.624.7821 or visit TnGolfStation.com.
