"Be the person your Dog thinks you are" - C.J. Frick

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment and we are happy to highlight the best for Mount Juliet kids in this issue.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

We started our family with our two dogs before we had our children and to this day although they have passed, they are truly still an integral part of our family's core memories. From taking the stress off my day during my college years, joining me for evening runs, to bringing our girls home from the hospital and licking their first "boo-boo's." They will never be replaced. We recently rescued our newest addition to the family, a spunky, mini golden doodle. Chances are, you may have seen him loose, my husband frantically chasing him through the neighborhood, or better yet, my girls and I running through the Publix parking lot and down the milk and dairy aisle. It only took the best in Mount Juliet, Scott Latzsch with AllStar Canine Academy, to bring some solid discipline and good habits to the table for our Buddy to fall in line.

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.  Cheers!

NASHVILLE IS HOME

(1) WE ARE SURE YOU ARE A HOUSEHOLD NAME AND FACE, BUT FOR ANYONE (ESPECIALLY THOSE MILLENNIALS) WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH YOU, TELL US YOUR STORY, HOW DID YOUR PATH LEAD YOU TO *NSYNC AND HOW DID THAT JOURNEY CHANGE YOUR LIFE? Well, I used to sing in quartets and do acappella when one of the guys in my

quartet introduced me to Lou Pearlman. Lou said he was looking for a band like my quartet...so I brought him the quartet. I made changes throughout the years. Guys would quit and find replacements which led me to Justin & JC and we brought in Joey and then Lance and that became *NSYNC.

(2) WE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN NASHVILLE TO SETTLE AND RAISE A FAMILY IN THE PAST DECADE. TELL US WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE. The people are amazing! We love the topography. It's a great place to raise our son. It's also a good hub since I travel a lot so it's convenient to almost everywhere I have to go. A lot happens in Nashville, especially in the music scene. It just made sense that we would be here.

(3) WE ARE HONORED THAT YOU WELCOMED US INTO YOUR HOME TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY. TELL US

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOU AND YOUR WIFE MET AND YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A FAMILY. My wife used to work for the Orlando Magic when I lived in Orlando. I asked her out for 2 years before she finally said yes. I used to make a joke; I would say to her, "If you go out with me one time, we will be together forever." She went out with me one time and we're still together forever. We just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary! We have a few family traditions that we love; at Easter we rent out a cabin in Gatlinburg and at Christmas we go to New York and do all the fun New York stuff.

(4) WE LOVE THAT YOU ARE SO INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITIES HERE REVOLVING AROUND CHILDREN AND PETS - CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THESE ORGANIZATIONS? I have loved visiting the Boys and Girls Club and am currently in talks with Notes for Notes to do something together.

My family and I are also very active with Wags & Walks, which is where we got our dog. Other than that, I like to go to a lot of charity events that are around town.

(5) WE HAVE LOVED SEEING YOU TOUR THE COUNTRY WITH THE RECENT POP 2000 TOUR. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT AND WHAT TOWN HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE TO VISIT SO FAR?  The Pop2000 Tour is definitely different than the old *NSYNC days because I get to play a lot of venues I've never played. Every week the venues that we're at are completely different and I love showing up and seeing the venue for the first time and getting to experience that town. As for my favorite city on this tour, there's really not a favorite for me.

The fan response has been amazing. It's been great to go out and sing the old songs with a bunch of bands that had hits back in the old TRL days and watch the reactions of the fans who used to be kids but are now bringing their kids to the shows.

When you have great people on the tour that you enjoy spending time with and hanging out with, it's the old cliche, "When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life."

(6) IF YOU COULD SHARE YOUR JOURNEY WITH SOMEONE WHO IS ASPIRING TO BE IN A SIMILAR CAREER, WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU LEND? ANYTHING HARD YOU LEARNED FROM THAT YOU HOPE TO SHARE TO HELP OTHERS? When it comes to gigs, don't say, "no," because you never know when that gig that you thought was a little birthday party or whatever it is, could have someone there that is like, "Hey I have this opportunity."

Practice your craft whenever you get an opportunity. Don't treat it like it's just another little gig. Treat every gig as if you are performing at the Super Bowl.

Social media is a great outlet now too if you've got great songs and ideas. It's a great way to be seen and noticed, for someone to find interest in what you do. You never know what shape your career could take.

Seeing the (Outdoor) Lights

How Lindsey and Michael Hymas’ family vacation evolved into a family business.

Early in 2021 as COVID-imposed restrictions lingered, Lindsey and Michael Hymas ventured from their Cincinnati home in search of a semblance of normalcy. That led them to Nashville, a place they had visited previously.

“If we ever were going to live somewhere else, we knew it would be here,” says Michael. “At the time I was working at Amazon, and I was informed that I’d have to move to either Nashville or Seattle. So, for us, the decision was easy.”

After that fateful intervention, Lindsey, Michael, and their three children moved into their new home in Mount Juliet. That led to another twist of fate: the founding of their new business, Bright Concepts Outdoor Lighting.

“I love gardening, flowers, and all outdoor beautification tasks,” says Lindsey. “And I thought our new home would look beautiful with the right outdoor lighting.”

Michael collaborated with a friend who had expertise in the field and the results were stunning. As word-of-mouth spread about the Hymas’ outdoor lighting, the couple began taking on jobs.

Michael’s engineering background along with Lindsey’s marketing skills and eye for creative detail made for an ideal team.

Each job is a custom design. Lindsey evaluates the aesthetic from the customer’s perspective while Michael uses high quality products on all installations. “I can’t NOT work in the best interest of my customer,” says Michael. Says Lindsey: “It’s really neat when our ideas manifest together and it’s always so rewarding to see the customer’s reaction.”

Of course, running a family business and raising a young family are time consuming endeavors. So, they’re intentional about making time for visiting local parks, hikes, cookouts, bike rides, and quarterly family vacations.

“We expect to be here a long time,” says Michael. “We love the area, have made great friends and the kids have adjusted well. Our business services the greater Nashville area, but we’re invested in Mount Juliet.”

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn says that boundaries can be learned by dogs of any age.

“There’s a nasty perception along the ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ line of thinking,” she says. “While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you. Dog training isn’t just for struggling pups either. Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

“Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

DOG SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.

The Power of Cumberland University

OVER 180 YEARS OF PRESERVING LEBANON’S UNIQUE IDENTITY

It's no secret that Nashville has easily established itself as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Booming healthcare, tourism, and music industries appeal to many who are looking to call Nashville 'home' and put down new roots. Subsequently, suburbs of Nashville have been feeling the growth and are quickly expanding into and even connecting with those music city lines. One could argue that, in some cases, it's hard to know exactly where Nashville ends and a new city begins. However, Lebanon, TN, has had the distinctive ability to maintain its unique identity throughout many years of continued growth thanks in large part to its most iconic landmark, Cumberland University.

Established in 1842, Cumberland University is no stranger to change- even withstanding the hardships of the Civil War and the World Wars, among others. For more than 180 years the historic institution has proven time and time again that it has staying power. And with recent record-breaking enrollment, you can rest assured that there are no signs of stopping. Sam Hatcher, Cumberland University Alumnus and current Chairman of the University's Board of Trust and his wife Teresa bear witness to some of the rich history, fortitude, and continued success that its students and the community have enjoyed over the years. Hatcher, who has served on the board since 1980, recalls a board decision in 1982 to once again make CU a four-year college, "We weren't sure what the result of that was going to be. We felt like, for the school to prosper and grow, that it was going to have to go back to its roots of being a four-year university. And as I look back on that,  that  was a major decision

At the podium: Sam Hatcher, Cumberland University Alumnus and current Chairman of the University’s Board of Trust.

for Cumberland University." Indeed, Cumberland has benefited from such decisions. The Hatchers noted that the university has attracted not only local residents, but students from 39 states and 48 countries have also stepped through Cumberland's doors looking to further their education. And the steadily growing institution now offers more than 80 accredited academic programs for minor, major, and graduate studies.

For students of the 2024-25 academic year, a welcomed decision was made by Cumberland University to not raise tuition costs. A recent press release cited "a period of uncertainty and financial strain for many navigating the college search process," as a motivating factor behind this crucial decision. Hatcher explains, "I think the board was trying to send a message. The University sent a message that says, 'We are aware. We recognize the challenges being faced by so many families in this current economic environment and that we want to be supportive in some way.' And we felt like perhaps the best way to do that was to maintain the current tuition and not increase [...] We feel like it's important that we've held the line on that."

Its student-centered focus truly sets Cumberland University apart, effectively positioning itself to thrive in nearly every department. Community outreach traditions like the annual community Easter egg hunt or the Symphony on the Lawn Concert Series are a few of the many ways CU brings the community and student body together. Mrs. Hatcher notes, "When you step on the campus, you just feel that it's a community in itself." At a time of seemingly infinite change and growth in Middle Tennessee, it's important that our cities try and maintain their uniqueness while enjoying each success. For Lebanon, TN, Cumberland University stands at the helm with the power to do just that. And it's not only the building itself that aids in preserving this singular town, it's the people you'll find within its doors.

NEW CLINIC BRINGS INNOVATIVE TREATMENT TO TENNESSEE

A Lice-Free Future

“It’s the least we could do for those who work hard every day to teach our children,” says Joe .

As the back-to-school season arrives, so does the unwelcome return of head lice. The mingling of children, teachers, and caregivers after a summer apart often leads to a surge in lice cases. But families in Middle Tennessee now have a new ally in the fight against lice: Lice Clinics of America— Williamson County. This clinic, part of the Lice Clinics of America (LCA) franchise, offers a groundbreaking dehydration technique to eliminate head lice and their eggs.

Owner Joe West was inspired to start the business after his daughter, who was away at college, called him worried about an itchy scalp. Fearing it might be lice, Joe contacted a clinic offering the AirAllé™ treatment for a head check. Fortunately, his daughter was lice-free, but this experience got Joe thinking: "What if someone needed help here?" After researching local options, he discovered that not a single clinic in Tennessee offered the non-pesticide AirAllé™ dehydration treatment.

"I saw this as a huge opportunity to launch a successful business by helping others in a crisis. It's a very rewarding business model," says Joe. The clinic opened in July 2024 to offer relief to families with its innovative approach.

The FDA-cleared AirAllé™ device provides a 30-minute session that dries out lice and nits.  Once that is complete, the technician will comb out the nits from the hair and finish with a topical rinse. This efficient process eliminates lice and their eggs in about one hour without the mess of water or shampoos.

BENEFITS OF THE AIRALLÉ™ TREATMENT INCLUDE:

• Minimizing school and work absenteeism due to lice.

• Providing a safe alternative for those with asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities.

• Avoiding the risk of lice developing resistance, as they cannot adapt to dehydration.

Chemical treatments pose risks, especially to children and individuals with health concerns. Overuse of pesticides can be harmful, and many lice have evolved resistance to these chemicals. The AirAllé™ treatment, by contrast, offers a safe and effective solution by dehydrating lice—a method to which lice cannot adapt.

The clinic offers other services, including head checks and lice-prevention products. The clinic has committed to helping school staff on the front lines with children. Any private or public school principal who registers their school in our Schools Without Lice Program will enable full-time teachers, nurses or administrators to receive head checks and treatments in the clinic for FREE. No questions asked. "It's the least we could do for those who work hard every day to teach our children," says Joe. LiceClinicsOfAmerica.com/Nashville

MYTHS VS. FACTS: UNDERSTANDING HEAD LICE

Misconceptions about head lice are common. Here are some myths debunked:

Myth: Topical anti-lice shampoos effectively kill lice eggs.

Fact: Lice have developed resistance to the pesticides in many traditional treatments.

Myth: Having lice is a sign of poor hygiene. Fact: Lice prefer clean hair.

Myth: Lice can spread diseases.

Fact: Head lice do not carry or transmit diseases.

Myth: Pets can spread head lice.

Fact: Lice can only survive on human heads.

Myth: Lice can fly, jump, and hop

Fact: Lice can only crawl. They depend on consuming blood every few hours, so they would never choose to leave their host. They are adapted to living in human hair and are reluctant to leave it.

Myth: Lice can live on pillows, hairbrushes and hats for a long time

Fact: Lice relies on feeding off its human host every 3 hours. They become weak and die quickly if they don’t have a host to feed from every few hours.
