Hello, my friends!

This month, we're giving you permission to wander. Whether that means uncovering Mount Clemens history one sidewalk at a time or finally figuring out which bird keeps stealing the blueberries from your garden—July is for exploring!

Our EXPLORE Issue kicks off with “History Beneath Our Feet,” where local historian and storyteller extraordinaire Jeff Pollock proves that even the quietest corners of our city have stories to shout. From fascinating footnotes to a goosebump-worthy true crime tale (yes, it really happened right here!), this article will have you scanning every building plaque and alleyway with fresh curiosity.

Then we take a peaceful pause with “Backyard Birding Made Simple.” Bob Gors of Wild Birds Unlimited shares his expert tips to help you turn your backyard into a birdwatcher’s paradise. It’s a beautiful reminder that some of the most rewarding discoveries happen when you’re still. Be sure to admire the stunning Oriole on our cover—photographed by Bob’s wife, Pam Gors—because beauty is part of the journey, too.

And if your idea of “exploration” leans more toward the sippable side, we’ve got you covered. We’re serving up five refreshing summertime drink recipes that are perfect companions for any kind of adventure—even if that adventure is flipping pages on your patio. Personally, I’ll be enjoying the Herbal Coconut Piña Colada while exploring a new beach read in my favorite lounge chair. Don’t judge me—I’m traveling through fiction!

So whether you’re hitting the trails, tuning into birdsong, or simply sipping in the sunshine, I hope this issue inspires you to embrace curiosity and enjoy the little things that make summer unforgettable.

If you’re a parent who wants your child to have:

• rock solid confidence

• lifelong self-discipline

• top level fitness

• and be safe from bullying and peer pressure

My son has been a student at Romanelli’s for over five years. I cannot express how great this dojo is. My son’s first experience with karate was through a school organization, and that teacher clearly did not know how to deal with young children. The instructors at Romanelli’s are unbelievably GREAT with children of all ages. They naturally modify their teaching styles and expectations based on each child’s individual age, level, and individual needs. The growth my son has shown in both self-esteem and physical abilities is un unbelievable. I would HIGHLY recommend this dojo for children, teens, and adults.

BIRDWATCHING MADE SIMPLE

Expert tips to make backyard birding a fascinating and peaceful part of your life.

Thinking of putting up a bird feeder? You’re not alone. Backyard birding is the second most popular hobby in the U.S.—right behind gardening. Bob Gors of Wild Birds Unlimited in Macomb shares expert tips to help you get started—and get results.

Male goldfinch
“You don’t have to track every species—just pour a coffee and watch. The birds will tell you plenty.”

START WITH THE RIGHT SETUP

If you’re new to bird feeding, don’t overcomplicate it. Bob recommends starting with a tray feeder, either pole-mounted or hung. “It’s accessible to the widest range of birds,” he says, “and it lets you experiment with different seed blends.”

Before setting up, take a look at your yard. Birds prefer to feed near trees or shrubs where they can perch and scan for predators. “If your yard is wide open, it’s going to be harder to attract them,” Bob notes.

Quick Tip: Place your feeder about 15 feet from trees or shrubs to give birds a safe place to wait their turn.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEED—AND SKIP THE FILLERS

Not all bird seed is created equal. Bob advises avoiding blends with fillers like milo, wheat, or oats. “Those are agricultural leftovers. Most birds won’t eat them.”

Each Wild Birds Unlimited store owner customizes their seed blends, based on the birds in each store’s specific area. Their blends contain no fillers—just high-quality ingredients birds actually eat. They’re available in no-mess varieties—no shells, no waste. “With standard seed, up to 40% of the weight of the bag is shells,” Bob says. “No-mess is 100 percent pure bird food.”

Quick Tip: Choose fresh, unscented, unflavored seed. Birds don’t need additives—just what they’d eat in nature. Check the ingredients on the bag: sunflower should be the first ingredient—since it’s the seed most birds love.

KEEP UNWANTED GUESTS AWAY

Squirrels causing trouble? Try safflower seed. “It tastes bitter to squirrels but attracts cardinals, grosbeaks, titmice, nuthatches and chickadees,” Bob says. Hot pepper blends also work—birds can’t taste the heat, but mammals can.

Dad feeding baby bluebirds

Top: Baltimore Oriole

Bottom: Red-breasted nuthatch

To deter large birds like starlings, Bob recommends using a cage around tube feeders to limit access. Tube feeders with small perches help discourage bigger birds. For tidier feeding, seed cylinders—compressed seed—are a great low-mess option.

Quick Tip: “Start simple,” Bob advises. “Watch what’s happening in your yard, then adjust as needed.” Unlike loose seed, cylinders make the birds work harder—and give you longer-lasting views of the birds.

SPOT BIRD BEHAVIOR (AND BACKYARD DRAMA)

Once your feeder’s up, the show begins.

“Different species act differently,” Bob explains. “Cardinals are typically the first and last birds of the day to the feeder. Male hummingbirds are very territorial and will defend ‘their’ feeder. Chickadees come to the feeder in a flash; they have a grab-and-go strategy. “In our backyard, orioles and bluebirds battle over live mealworms,” Bob adds. “The female bluebird often holds her ground.”

Quick Tip: You don’t need to track every species. “Just sit back with a cup of coffee and watch,” Bob says. “You’ll start noticing more than you’d expect.”

SEASONAL CHANGES TO EXPECT

Feeder activity increases in summer, thanks to fledglings. “By July, your bird population has basically doubled,” Bob says. At the same time, some favorites—like male orioles—start their fall migration as early as July.

One common myth? That goldfinches leave in winter. “They stay put,” Bob says. “But the males molt into drab-colored feathers, so people often don’t recognize them.”

“Most people start with one feeder and get hooked. It becomes part of the day—peaceful, fascinating, and surprisingly personal. You’ll start to recognize personalities in the birds themselves.”

Quick Tip: Keep feeding in winter. “Some of the best bird watching happens in the colder months— different species of birds visit us in the winter.”

HOW TO ATTRACT SPECIFIC BIRDS

Want cardinals? Use tray feeders or tube feeders with U-shaped perches. “They’re heavier birds,” Bob says. “Standard tube feeders are hard for them to use.”

Hoping for bluebirds? They prefer park-like settings. If your yard fits, try a nesting box with a 1.5-inch entrance, and offer live mealworms far away from the nest box.

Hummingbirds? Stick to sugar water—no red dye needed. “And expect a show,” Bob adds. “Males are fiercely territorial at the feeder.”

Wild Birds Unlimited carries feeders tailored to specific birds, but Bob and his team focus

on fit. “We ask about your yard, your goals, and guide you from there.”

Quick Tip: Not sure what birds are in your area? Ask your local Wild Birds Unlimited shop or check with the Macomb Audubon Society.

WHY BIRD WATCHING STICKS

Bob says many customers started birding during the pandemic—and never stopped. “They looked out the window and realized something was there,” he says. It’s remained part of their lives: one couple told Bob they still start every morning on the porch with coffee and birdsong.

“It became a ritual that many people now cherish,” Bob says.

HISTORY BENEATH OUR FEET

HISTORIAN JEFF POLLOCK REGALES US WITH FASCINATING TALES OF MOUNT CLEMENS THAT ARE HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT

If you want to explore Mount Clemens, don’t start with a brochure. Start with Jeff Pollock.

The former director of the Crocker House Museum and current Executive Director of Detroit History Tours and the Detroit History Club doesn’t lead your typical walking tour. He doesn’t just point at a landmark and recite a date. Instead, he places you inside the moment. “You’re standing here,” he’ll say, “where Nixon and Kennedy gave campaign speeches—just feet apart, weeks apart, in 1960.”

Pollock’s fascination isn’t with plaques or podiums. It’s with the everyday spaces that used to hold extraordinary meaning: a curve in the road where a scion of wealth met a violent end that captivated the nation. A quiet city street once flooded so often, people kept boats by their porches. Rose gardens that were arguably the world’s finest.

Let’s start with Deadman’s Curve, the sharp bend near Cass and Romeo Plank where J. Stanley Brown—a Detroit cigar heir—was found dead in a car on Christmas Eve, 1919. The scene itself was eerie: snow falling, the car engine still warm, Brown slumped behind the wheel in tailored clothes and a fine overcoat.

Brown had filed for divorce from his wife Ruth that September, adding a layer of motive to what became one of Macomb County’s most confounding homicide cases. Ruth was arrested but released. Lloyd Prevost—Brown’s best friend, and Ruth’s cousin— was convicted, despite proclaiming his innocence and being placed with Brown by multiple witnesses that evening.

But the case wasn’t over yet. Years later, on his deathbed, a priest revealed a final shocking twist: Ruth’s father (and Lloyd’s uncle), Frank Prevost, had admitted to the murder during confession. Lloyd was pardoned, finally reclaiming his good name.

CONTINUED >

VP Richard M. Nixon and his wife, Patricia, ride along North Gratiot (later North Main) in downtown Mount Clemens during a 1960 presidential campaign stop.

Newspapers across the country followed the case closely, fascinated by its blend of high society scandal and small-town justice. Deadman's Curve remains one of the region’s most chilling intersections of wealth, betrayal, and mistaken justice.

Boats near porches? That's part of Mount Clemens's hidden history too. For decades, seasonal flooding plagued the east side of Mount Clemens. Streets would swell with water, sometimes rising several feet, prompting residents to keep boats at the ready—just to reach their front steps. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century, through a series of viaducts and engineered drainage improvements, that the worst of the flooding was controlled. To longtime residents, those solutions weren’t just infrastructure—they were a turning point.

Or consider Nixon and Kennedy, whose dueling campaign speeches in the heart of downtown reflected more than just a crowded election calendar. They reflected Mount Clemens’ role as county seat for Macomb—a bellwether region for national politics even then. A sculpture of Kennedy still stands nearby, immortalizing the moment.

And then there’s the story of the Mount Clemens cannons.

“They’re replicas,” Jeff admits. “The originals were donated to the war effort during WWII, melted down for scrap. That’s why they’re fake. But that’s also why they matter. It tells you what the people of Mount Clemens valued in that moment—sacrifice over symbolism.”

Jeff’s storytelling style doesn’t dwell in nostalgia. Instead, it crackles with detail. Like the lesser-known village of Warsaw, once an active enclave of Polish immigrants filled with homes, local businesses, and a train depot. Today, it’s barely marked, but fragments of its presence remain in city maps, real estate records, and old-timer stories. Eventually annexed by Mount Clemens, Warsaw is now woven into the urban fabric so fully that most people don’t realize it was ever its own place. Jeff also tells us the nearby 'ghost towns,' like Meade and Disco, aren’t really ghost towns at all, just forgotten post offices or unincorporated villages.

Even the mineral baths Mount Clemens is famous for are rich with hidden history. They were a magnet for not just European royalty, but big-name entertainers—some of whom wintered here to play the circuit and soak in the sulfur-rich waters. The city’s fame was such that for a time, Mount Clemens rivaled Hot Springs, Arkansas.

And then there were the roses. In the first half of the 20th century, Mount Clemens was home to vast commercial rose gardens that supplied florists and events across the country. At one point, we were crowned the Rose Capital of the World. Though the greenhouses are long gone, the legacy blooms in old postcards, floral-themed memorabilia, and the memories of residents who still remember the scent drifting on summer winds.

“That’s the kind of history people walk past every day," Jeff concludes. "History is full of chances. Missed ones. Made ones. So I always tell people the best way to explore Mount Clemens is to start walking—because almost wherever you stand, something remarkable happened right there."

ENJOYING SUMMER

In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!

Beach Ball Garland

Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed?  It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!

Materials

• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)

• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)

• Thin rope or twine

• Air pump

Instructions

1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!

2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.

3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.

4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.

Watermelon Cake

A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!

Ingredients

• 2 large watermelons

• Assortment of berries and fruit

• 4 wooden skewers

• Toothpicks

• Whipped cream (optional)

• Fresh mint (optional)

Instructions

1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.

2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.

3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.

4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.

“I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way.”

Embrace the natural sweetness of sun-ripened fruits and the invigorating zest of garden-fresh herbs. From crisp berry infusions to fragrant herbal blends, enjoy the art of crafting delicious and revitalizing beverages that celebrate the fresh flavors of summer.
