The business that inspired this month’s idea is Rhino Roofing. Once we discovered that this company is quite generous with community support, especially when it comes to our children, we built from there. While roof shingles are important, there are other stories here. The rest of the stories housed within this issue are inspiring in all of the ways that make us come alive. Whether you're in the market for something that makes you feel a certain way or you just want to support a local mission, these stories will have you wearing a wide, cheesy grin, which of course is the best accessory one can have.
This month's style issue is a fun concept for me. Year after year I feel inade quate in the way of "fashion" because I'm a sporting gal. I love being ready for adventure at a moment's notice, sometimes wearing my leather horseback riding shoes while doing yard work, just in case I get the urge to hop on one of my steeds bareback. Embarrassing as it may be, my husband and I have this joke about showering. Once either one of us get out of the shower, there will be no more fly-spraying horses, milking sheep, or doing any kind of outdoor work. It's our out-of-order outfit: wet hair, clean socks and pajamas.
I recently heard a radio personality joke about Montanans being ready for a hike at any given moment. I laughed because I know it to be true. While I was driving to the grocery store with my son in tow, I was wearing Keen san dals, swishy hiking pants, and a sleeveless shirt. I have sunscreen, gummy bears, and bug spray in the vehicle at all times. I could have easily rerouted our day of domestic tasks and taken to the nearby trails. Guilty as charged .
ourThat'sstyle.
This issue is a loose take on style, veering more toward the figurative rather than the physical appearance we tend to think of first. "Oh, that's totally her style," someone will say when a close friend helps out a stranger. Her character is being complimented, not her fashion choices, and I like the sound of building a whole issue centered around that feeling.

Where a predetermined career meets a new perspective on prescriptions Growing up in the Philippines meant three things for Francienne
Grantsaris: First, she would have her favorite breakfast of rice, eggs, and meat most mornings. Second, her Catholic roots and practices guaranteed huge family gatherings (to the tune of hundreds of “relatives”). Third, her future profession would be decided by her parents.

16
“Your parents decide your future profession,” said Francienne. “It’s predetermined before birth, meaning you will end up having one of these careers: doctor, nurse, lawyer, or an accountant.” Luckily for Missoula, her preordained profession was in healthcare.

“While traditional medicine is a good approach for acute illnesses and for diagnosing and treating advanced illnesses, it can only treat disease once it has already occurred.” That just wasn’t good enough for Francienne or her patients.
18
“I had a deep nagging feeling that there had to be a better way than the ‘pill for every ill’ style of medicine that I was delivering,” said Francienne.
Having started college in the Philippines, Francienne’s path to medicine took a drastic turn when her mother made the huge sacrifice to move her family to Montana. Fifteen years later, with an undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of Montana and a graduate degree from Georgetown University, Francienne now serves Missoula as a board-certified family nurse practi tioner. She is also currently working on a second board certification in functional health. Her effort toward this second accreditation is the direct result of having become discouraged by the cus tomary method of treating disease.
Today, FG Aesthetics and Medicine is a compre hensive practice providing natural-looking facial results for patients seeking the best version of themselves while optimizing health and quality of life through a functional medicine process. This process is different than standard medicine in that rather than focusing on diseases or separate organ systems, the body is treated as one interconnected organism. The goal of functional medicine is not to diagnose disease, but to find the root cause of that disease. Why is the patient afflicted with gastroin testinal concerns or thyroid issues? What is caus ing hormonal imbalances or weight gain? Finding that root cause can be tricky when considering the entire body, which is where testing comes in.

Functional medicine takes the outdated doc tor-patient relationship and redefines it. No longer should a person expect to show up to an office, receive a diagnosis, and be treated with the same pill everyone else with that condition receives. True healthcare is about empowering the patient to take accountability, play detective, and work with a doc tor or coach to regain their highest quality of life. Francienne’s calling may have been somewhat of an arranged marriage, but Filipino culture and tra dition have instilled a deep sense of self within her care of others. She’s proud to say she, “truly enjoys the practical application of science that medicine represents where your intellect, influence, and heart come together.”

“We test because we don’t like to guess,” Francienne posted on her Instagram page (@fgaestheticsandmedicine). Such tests might include in-house blood draws, advanced hormone testing using the DUTCH method, or compre hensive (and private) stool testing sent directly to the home. In addition to testing, Francienne spends quite a bit of time gathering history from her patients. What are the interactions that might be affecting your body? Environment? Lifestyle factors? Piecing all of this information together allows Francienne to see the overall picture and to create a plan of care that is uniquely tailored to the individual. She believes that, “part of the greatest impact of functional medicine is engaging with the patients to make them an active participant in their overall health and well-being. When an individual is accountable, they are more likely to make the nec essary changes to improve their health.”

started selling things on Instagram and slowly built up a small following, built up even more clothes. I did that online for about a year. In June of 2021 we heard this space was for rent, so we came, looked around, and it’s got everything that we like.” Kayla, along with her boyfriend and business partner Kai, are coming up on the one-year anniversary in the store front on East Main. “We just decided to jump in. Here we are, one year later, and it’s going pretty good so far.”
Walking down the steps from East Main Street and entering Betty V. Vintage is an experience in itself. One is immersed in an underground wonderland of curated curios, clothing of all shapes and sizes, all colors and fabrics, as well as enigmatic furniture, art, and home décor, all individ ually selected by Kayla herself.
Kayla started collecting items to sell on eBay. “I sold things for a while, but I kind of lost patience with it,” she says. “I just kept collecting things. I always had the intention of opening a store of some kind, but I was always too busy working other jobs. Then with COVID, all of my hobbies went away, and I don’t like to sit around much. So I started a webpage,
When they’re not holding down the store, Kayla and Kai are roaming far and wide searching for castoff treasures.
“I measure every single piece of clothing that’s in the store, price it, put a description on it, research to see if there’s anything special about the piece,” Kayla says. “A lot of the stuff I collect are ‘statement pieces’: super fun, weird patterns, the more unique, the better.”
26 FASHION FORWARD | SHOPPING
“We travel a lot, and anywhere we go we check out yard sales and thrift stores, we find all types of stuff, talk to different people,” Kayla says. “We’ve got a bunch of shirts that we picked up in Vegas in April from a bunch of guys who were greasers. I’m from Anaconda, so I’m always bouncing between there and Butte. Kai’s from Helena so we spend a bunch of time there. Really any reason to go shopping.”
The store itself resembles yet another hand-picked piece of ephemera: the building dates from the 1890s with hardwood floors and most of the original fixtures.
The space feels like a well-kept secret finally opened up for the world, very much like the hand-selected items that populate the store. “It’s super unique, it’s weird, which is everything that I look for in what I buy,” Kayla says.

Sometimes, philanthropy seems complicated: throw ing money at issues isn’t always the solution. We wonder if
“I wanted to build a tough roof,” Brian said, “A roof should be a once-in-a-lifetime investment. I trained my guys to put on a high-quality roof—and it’s working.”
He’s quick to say he didn’t go without and he credits his single mom with providing for their family after his dad passed away when Brian was a year old. Brian learned all veins of the construction trade as a young man, eventually moving to Florence in the early 2000s to raise his family.
“I appreciate any kid who has a job and is doing some thing better for themselves,” Brian explained. “If I can help them do that, I’m in.”
Rhino Roofing got its start in 2014.

“I don’t think I could have a better team,” he said. “Our crews are amazing. They share my vision.”
Brian was born for hard work and persistent scrabbling his way to the top—he grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, the youngest of eight kids.
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…”
St. Francis’ prayer is a fitting motto for Brian, the owner and founder of Rhino Roofing in Missoula—a man and a company committed to quality, top-of-the-line work, as well as to the communities in which he lives and works.
No homeowner wants a leaky roof. Brian takes his stan dard for best-in-the-business roofing to his mentality of philanthropy. He started a scholarship program a few years ago, awarding graduating high-school seniors with $1,000 scholarships to further their education.
Brian’s team includes several members of his family: his girlfriend, Sherry Carrico, serves as office manager. His son, Chase, is project manager and his daughter, Angela, works part time as an administrative assistant. In addition to three roofing crews, Zach Guzman works as sales manager.
“We didn’t have a lot of money,” Brian said. “I wasn’t poor, but I didn’t have the best bicycle.”
Brian’s kids attended Florence schools and he saw the need for financial assistance for students with a desire to further their education. He’s read over 500 application essays, always looking for students with a compelling story and the ability to tell it.
Rhino Roofing is an Emerald Premium contractor of Malarkey Roofing Products, a distinction earned through training, testing, and inspection of roofing projects. And while Brian and his team are committed to leading the industry in roofing, perhaps the most influential by-prod uct of his work ethic is his commitment to giving back to his neighbors in Missoula and Ravalli counties.
So begins the first line of the prayer of St. Francis, a copy of which hangs next to Brian Bovee’s desk, surrounded by photos of family, a poster of the 2020 Florence High School football team, and a placard offering “Seven Rules for Life.”

Brian Bovee
“It takes so little effort to give back,” he explained.
GIVING BACK | HOME SERVICES
“I used to have major stress and anxiety. It took me 49 years to manage that,” he explained. “If I can help take that away, I want to help.” Tough roofs protect family homes and local philanthropists bridge needs in the community.
Brian is devoted to both causes. “I do feel on top of the world right now,” he said. “I’m 51 years old and I’ve never felt this good. When I look in the mirror, I can smile.”
Brian knows the effects of worry and how a little help can go a long way to change a person’s mindset.
Brian spearheaded a public service campaign called “Raise the Roof” with the Missoula Food Bank to raise money to provide healthy snacks for school kids, teaming up with other local business owners to raise funds and awareness. He knows that many donors gave large dona tions, but he also saw the power of many people giving smaller amounts as well—including the man who gave him a twenty-dollar bill in Cabela’s one afternoon.
“I’m 51 years old and I’ve never felt this good.

Find Rhino Roofing on the web at RhinoRoofingMT.com or by calling 406.552.3089.
“It’s a huge difference, with just the kids alone,” Brian said. “The little bit that I do, I know makes a big difference. This tiny thing, what kids are thinking when they eat an orange for a snack at school, helps them get through that day; or it helps them buy books for a year of college.”
small amounts of cash can actually make a difference. With the cost of college tuition, rent, and books, a thousand dollars only goes so far. But Brian doesn’t see it that way.
When I look in the mirror, I can smile.”

THE ROOMS Cactus paddles. My ears perked up as the therapist explained that the prickly greenery would be integrated into the Nopal Massage I was about to experience. Welcome to my visit to the spa at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North (FourSeasons.com/ Scottsdale/)—just one of the fabulous experiences I enjoyed during a recent visit to this desert destination. With another Montana winter just around the cor ner, now is the perfect time to plan a future getaway that will whisk you away to warmer weather. Read on to find out why I think this Arizona Four Seasons prop erty should be at the top of your to-visit list.
Imagine an oasis of luxury in the middle of the red rocks of Scottsdale, and that pretty much sums up the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. And thanks to a direct flight offered by Allegiant airlines between Missoula Montana Airport and PhoenixMesa Gateway Airport, you don’t have to worry about connecting flights to visit. The thing I loved about this property is that once my car dropped me off, I didn’t have the need—or desire—to leave for the three days I was there. From multiple dining concepts to nearby hiking trails to a fabulous outdoor pool, everything I could possibly need during my visit was within the cozy adobe confines of this resort. If you are interested in heading off-property to visit spots like Old Town Scottsdale, I would suggest renting a car. For me, I enjoyed the secluded nature of the resort. But, if you want to visit the area, Uber rides could easily add up.
Your own private casita—that’s what you can expect when it comes to the accommodations at this property. Rooms are appointed with all of the lux uries you would expect from a Four Seasons Hotel, including deep soaking tubs, twice-daily house keeping services, the softest bed linens, a top-notch private bar, and Nespresso machines and electric tea kettles (which the tea drinker in me appreciates immensely). Casitas also feature fireplaces and pri vate patios with million dollar views of the moun tains, valley, or lagoon-style pool. If you’re looking to splurge, I highly recommend booking an Oasis One-Bedroom Suite, which is the casita I called “home” during my visit. From the private plunge pool to the al fresco garden shower, I felt like this suite was my own private oasis.

Now back to those cactus paddles… At the beginning of the 60-minute treatment, the paddles are soaked and then cut in half so the therapist can incorporate the warm cactus gel into the massage. The nopal cac tus—better known as the prickly pear cactus—offers health benefits due to its high antioxidant, vitamin, and mineral content. Not only did the gel feel amaz ing against my skin, it left it hydrated and ready to take on the dry desert air. In addition to the treat ment I experienced, the spa offers a variety of other options ranging from a Prickly Pear Renewal body treatment to the Gold Repair Facial. While visiting the spa, be sure to set aside time to visit the steam room and to work out in the state-of-the-art gym. The spa also offers guests guided hike, yoga, and other fitness class options. Golf lovers can try their luck on one of the resort courses. And those who enjoy swinging a racket can check out the tennis or pickle ball courts for a quick workout. Finally, if your definition of wellness is simply to enjoy a little R&R, the pool area is not to be missed. There are separate children’s and adult pools to enjoy.
From a fresh veggie frittata delivered via room ser vice to the casual pretzel knots at Proof to the exotic Secreto Iberico served up at the resort’s fine dining concept, Talavera, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale offers a dining option to suit every palate. I opted to indulge in a bigger room service breakfast each morn ing, enjoying the frittata I mentioned, the chilaquiles, and the huevos rancheros. After spending my after noons poolside in the heat, I generally was content with ordering a triple berry smoothie for lunch. As for dinner, Proof is perfect when you want something more casual. Again, the pretzel knots are out of this world, but the shrimp and scallop aguachile is refresh ing and tasty, as is the create-your-own sundae for dessert. Finally, the food and sunset views at Talavera are not to be missed. From the lobster tostadas to the Secreto Iberico I mentioned (think: the finest pork served up with mole negro and other delights), every bite I took did not disappoint.

Furthermore, the overall landscape of the auto motive trade has utterly transformed in that time, in two big ways: technology and information.
Shannon Flanagan’s roots in Missoula’s car culture run deep. It’s in his DNA: his father Larry Flanagan began selling cars in the 1960s for H.O. Bell, Missoula’s original Ford dealer dating back to the early 20th century. Shannon’s father then started Flanagan Motors as a used-car dealership in 1975 when Shannon was five years old. Whether nature or nurture, Shannon became a car guy who’s been in the automotive business since he turned eighteen. Since their beginning, along with the town in which they’ve become an institution, Flanagan Motors has seen its share of upheavals and changes.
On the subject of technology, Shannon is similarly open-minded.“Carsarenow basically technology hangars,” he continues. “They have this massive suite of technol ogy that makes things easier and safer. And that’s changed our service business. In the '80s, '90s, 2000s, we used to do a lot of heavy repair work and
“I’ve been on my own as a business owner in Missoula now since 2012, and it’s been up-anddown,” Shannon says of the car business. While today they are solidly a Mazda franchise, they’ve also had their hands in a slew of other makes, includ ing AMC, Jeep, Renault, and Lincoln-Mercury, and they’ve seen bankruptcies and restructuring remake their business time and again.
“The biggest thing that’s changed in the industry since I started selling cars is that information is so readily available. And I actually embrace that, I think that’s a good thing,” Shannon says. “Even though you still have to build confidence with your customer, they come in with a set of information they believe in. Our dialogue with customers is usually making sure their set of information aligns with ours. Nine times out of 10 it does, and that makes our job a lot swifter and easier.”
DRIVER’S JOURNAL | AUTO + MARINE we’re doing less and less of that every year. Nowadays with warranty repairs, it’s like a refresh of a computer: you down load a new program and off you go. We’re going to be looking at manufacturers with over-the-air updates and a more unified manufacturing process. All of this is coming down the road, and it’s really exciting.”
The model that Flanagan Motors sells that embodies this spirit is the MX-5, popularly known as the Miata. It’s one of Mazda’s flagship models, by some measures the most popular sports car in automotive history in terms of units produced and sold. “It’s the one that everybody recognizes,” Shannon says. “It’s super fun to drive, compact, nimble, economical, and also reliable.” And in many ways, the Miata represents an ideal for the Montana adventurer, a mindset and ethos that Shannon Flanagan knows intimately.
So, Shannon Flanagan does not shy away from change, and is in fact quite optimistic about it. Which is a good quality for a Missoulian to have. When he was born in 1970, Missoula’s popu lation hovered around 30,000 people. Today it’s creeping up to 80,000. Along with a more-than doubled population, the primary industry in town during the same period has shifted dramatically from logging and forest products.
In some ways, Shannon Flanagan is like an artist, providing the community what it subconsciously needs.
Now there are cleaner jobs, primarily in the tech and medical sectors. The sky has cleared--at least a little bit--and the present is a little bit brighter. Flanagan Motors has been here through it all, a pillar in an ever-changing community, and Shannon is excited to usher the business into the future.
“I always think of American culture as car culture,” Shannon says.
“It polluted the whole valley with woodsmoke,” Shannon says. “There were fewer sunny days then than we get now.”
“Customers have wants that they want fulfilled, and they have this ideal in their mind about driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road with the top down, or heading to Yellowstone National Park, or hitting Highway 12 and following the Clearwater all the way to Lewiston, Idaho,” Shannon says. “I think in Montana specifically there’s an ideal where people want to be out. They want to go on an adventure, they want to explore, they want their car to take to them to the base of a mountain they can hike to the top of. All these things are really important to Missoulians.”

Western Montana Lighting rides the waves of change, armed with options Lighting consultant and owner of Western Montana Lighting Drew Mihelish hangs onto the life raft that has buoyed her through the changes in economy, customer interests, and even customer origin: options. Western Montana Lighting is, and always has been, beaming with options to suit any style.
With Drew's team attending market to purchase lighting twice per year, they have any style or brand you could dream of. And you'd think after all these years Drew would surely have a favorite style, but that isn't the case. "I have so much appreciation for each style for different reasons. The most important decision while developing your lighting package with my team is to give an overall concept that you are hoping to accomplish," says Drew. "It also looks best if you try to pair your lighting with the overall style and design of your home (exterior architecture coor dinates with interior design). Marrying the inside out and outside in is the icing on the cake that makes your efforts seem extremely thought out and purposeful."
"We can do anything from rustic all the way to extremely modern," says Drew. "In fact, contemporary items have been our top seller for many years in a row. We have also seen a large request in modern farmhouse and mid-century mod ern. However, with more people moving to Montana from out of state, finally getting to decorate their rustic dream home, we are starting to see a rise in more rustic lighting again."

And that's where Drew's team shines—meeting the chal lenge. From countertops and hardware to flooring and paint colors, the team can grasp and execute any style and make it come together flawlessly. "The amount of talent my team has is hands down the best in the state when it comes to designing lighting layouts. So come in and see what we can do for you," says Drew.
