YOU Never Go Out of Style!

Hi friends,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and ready for the start of fall.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much in Mission Hills and the surrounding communities to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

EMMALEE RATHSAM PHOTOGRAPHY

A

local photographer earns international accolades with her uniquely creative self portraits and images

Creative, eerie, fashionable, beautiful–these are just a handful of terms one might use to describe the work of fine art, architectural and portrait photographer Emmalee Rathsam, whose creativity and attention to detail is turning heads as she competes with the best in the world in international image competitions.

“Competing in image competitions has pushed me to become a better photographer. It’s the perfect outlet to try new ideas and practice different lighting techniques. Just like athletes practice, I think it’s important for photographers to practice,” she said.

Rathsam counted the photography awards she has received since entering her first competition in 2015. That number is 35– a humbling feeling for a creative who fell in love with photography in high school and has built her business over the last 12 years.

“Seeing Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange–the historic image that captures a mother during the Great Depression–ignited my passion for photography. The impact that image has on the viewer and the story it tells is what made me want to be a photographer,” she said.

Rathsam began her career as a wedding, newborn, senior and family portrait photographer. Back then, as a new mom, the joy of capturing those special moments for clients was an incredible

launching pad for her business. But with time, Rathsam has added talents to her arsenal.

“As an artist it’s a natural progression to become more creative and push the envelope,” she said. “I have a huge love for art, and I try to implement that into my work.”

A big influence for Rathsam is the Renaissance period and the Surrealism movement. Both styles can be seen in her fine art and competition portrait submissions, many of which are self-portraits.

Recently, Rathsam pictured herself as a marionettist and used her knowledge of studio lighting and other effects to elevate herself to a second-place finish at ICON International Photography Awards. The judging process in these competitions is no walk in the park. What speaks to one person may not carry the same weight for another.

“Once you’ve made it to the live printed portion of the judging process, you sit in a room full of people and listen to them talk about your image,” Rathsam said. “They offer helpful constructive criticism, but it can be very nerve-racking.”

Another self-portrait she created is a double-exposure which emulates the work of photographer Duane Michals. This documentation of emotions felt during the COVID-19 pandemic received a merit award at Wedding & Portrait Photographers International a few years ago.

“Being recognized for my work is very rewarding. The validation that comes from the photographers that you’ve admired for years is so encouraging.” she said.

Rathsam’s goal is to one day see her portraits on display in Kansas City and beyond, and she is well on her way to seeing this dream come true. Until then, Rathsam will continue to inspire and uplift. Whether through her fine art or family photography, she has built a trustworthy brand that thrives on relationships and keeps people coming back time and time again.

Good Bones Are Always In Style

A Look Into A Cable Custom Homes Remodel

Sometimes a dream home does not start out looking very dreamy. The wear and tear of the decades are obvious, and the rooms are smothered in trends that have not been in style for 50 years. Most buyers would pass on a fixer-upper of this magnitude, but Cable Custom Homes owner Kent Cable sees the beauty through the overhaul.

“I like big renovation projects because there are no two alike,” he said. “You are really starting from scratch each time.”  Starting from scratch sometimes means stripping a house down to its bones so it can be updated to brand new. It takes five to six months to complete a whole house renovation from the day Cable and his crew begin demolition to when the house

is “move in ready,” significantly less time than a new construction home.

With an education in construction and real estate backed by 30 years of experience including management consulting, Cable built a foundation for a successful real estate investment business before that thought ever existed. Now, that business has grown into making the dreams of homeowners a reality with jaw-dropping transformations one would have to see to believe.

“It’s kind of a different blend, but I can take a lot of my consulting experience working with clients and weave that into my business,” he said. “There is a lot of problem solving. You have to be creative in how you do that.”

BEFORE

AFTER

Cable emphasizes the key to managing a home renovation is good communication with all of the people involved – the homeowner, the suppliers and his trusted team of subcontractors. It is also the key to managing problems.

“I’ve learned that you don’t bring the client a problem, you bring them solutions,” he said. “Even though I don't own this house, I still manage it like it’s mine. I understand how costs can run up. That’s why I am transparent with the cost.”

Keeping the stress levels low and the process smooth for the homeowner is incredibly important to Cable. From start to finish, he helps guide his clients through the process, often going with them to look at several homes before they decide on which one will be theirs.

“Home buying is an emotional process for the homeowner,” he said. “They are often building their final dream home. They have certain checklists of what they want in the house.”

Thankfully, Cable is not intimidated by checklists. One of his first projects was a house in Fairway, Kansas built in the 1950s. The family was overjoyed to find every single item on their list completed with no corners cut.

“They’ve told me more than once, ‘We got everything.’ It was through the process of listening, understanding and bringing in the right resources that made it happen. My job is to coordinate and bring that together.”

What Does Style Mean to You?

WHAT DO THE TERMS "BEAUTY" AND "STYLE" MEAN TO YOU?

The term “beauty” to me not only reflects your outward appearance, but also who you are as a person on the inside. Integrity and kindness are always beautiful. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the word “style” is fashion! It is always fun to express your style through fashion.

Fall’s 5 Biggest Trends

POWER REDS

From casual wear to shoes, red is the must-have color this season! Go bold with a head-to-toe look, or enhance a neutral outfit with a standout accessory. In Kansas City, this trend is a sure hit..

PREP SCHOOL

The resurgence of the Rugby Polo and track pants is bringing back high school memories. This trend features an abundance of stripes, polos, loafers, and a lot of navy. These timeless pieces are great investments that can be styled for many seasons to come.

PATTERN PLAY

Fall ‘24 is all about redefining tradition. This season, expect to see a deliberate blend of fabrics and patterns in garments like blazers, dresses, and denim. Take this custom ELV blazer, for example—crafted from two different fabrics that harmonize perfectly. Pieces like this elevate an outfit from good to great.

RODEO CHIC

Country is cool again, and we’re loving the nods to horses, cowboy boots, and lasso-inspired details. Denim skirts paired with tall boots and western-inspired knits create an incredibly versatile look. Be sure to add a statement belt to your fall shopping list—it really completes the outfit.

WALLFLOWER PRINTS

Who says florals are only for spring? This fall, expect to see floral prints trending in moody colors and heavier fabrics. Pair them with rich textures like leather or suede to ground these feminine florals and add a striking contrast to your outfits.
