An Apothecary of Transformative, Handcrafted Products
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROMI APOTHECARYTaking great care of her skin was instilled in Romina Takimoto from a young age while growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii. “It’s just a part of Korean culture,” she says. “My grandmother taught my mother and then my mother taught me.”
In the early 2000s, she moved to St. Paul to attend Macalester College and created a career here. Romina practiced occupational therapy for eight years and developed a holistic sense of health and wellness.
During this time, she discovered a passion for Western herbalism, and started experimenting with making her own natural medicines and topicals right in her own kitchen after learning in depth about “all these beautiful medicinals growing right in our backyards.”
“Through apprenticeships and personal exploration, I learned that certain plants are very powerful and can transform the health of skin,” she says. “I started going out in nature and foraging for herbs, drying the herbs, building a relationship with the plants, and incorporating the herbs into formulations.
“In 2016, I had really bad cystic acne with scarring, and since my skin produces more melanin, I also had these dark spots. The first product I ever made was Restore Oil Serum, which is a formula with seven different plant infusions of potent herbs like yarrow, plantain, comfrey and St. John's Wort.”
Romina began using this formula – which she says also smells earthy and grounding – to treat her acne. “My skin regenerated, and if you were to look at me today, although I still have some minor indentations, which are a little bit harder to repair, the dark scars have completely gone away.”
She decided to share her knowledge and products with others, and founded ROMI Apothecary in 2017.
“I discovered that there was a yearning for people to connect to their bodies and to their health. There were and are a lot of products out there, but they focus more on treating rather than having a deeper connection with nature and with the plant-based ingredients in the bottle.
“Through apprenticeships and personal exploration, I learned that certain plants are very powerful and can transform the health of skin.”
“I discovered that there was a yearning for people to connect to their bodies and to their health.”
“To heal is not one dimensional. It's not about what products are used, but instead, it’s looking at what the bigger picture is of your health, your habits and your routines, and how those products fit into that larger, holistic picture.”
The ingredients used in all her products are grown by farmers in the region. “Through my herbalism community, I've made relationships with small farmers who own their own land and cultivate using permaculture and biodynamic farm principles,” says Romina. “It's all about seeing how plants relate to each other and the entire ecosystem, so there really is a holistic approach there as well. And these farmers truly love their land. These are not big GMO-based farms. These farmers are tilling their own land, hand-harvesting and hand-drying the herbs with utmost care.”
Today, ROMI Apothecary has a small manufacturing studio in St. Paul. Here, they have a production space with a laboratory, a shipping warehouse and multiple workstations.
Consumers can order the products right from the ROMI website, and have them shipped all over the country. They can also be found in retail locations around Minneapolis and beyond.
“I’m really proud of my staff,” she says. “We process everything in-house and our products are all handcrafted with scientific precision. We respect the core integrity of the plants and infuse our positive energy and respect for nature and our community within the products.”
In addition to the Restore Oil Serum, two of her other favorite products are the Reishi Tide Hyaluronic Acid Serum and the Earthly Cleansing Oil. “The cleansing oil is an oil-to-soap product.
It washes off and really dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and anything that's collected on your skin throughout the day. The magic of this cleanser is that in the spring, when the spruce tips start to bloom and wake up, we go out and wild harvest these flexible young tips and infuse them into an oil that eventually goes into the cleanser.”
Reishi Tide, she says, is an industry game changer. “It's a hyaluronic acid serum and compared to other hyaluronic acids on the market, we have one of the higher concentrations of the active ingredient at 2.5%. Most are less than 1% or a maximum of 2%. Hyaluronic acid serum is a huge component of optimal skin hydration.”
In the future, Romina hopes that ROMI will become a national household name for natural skincare. “We've been quite local to Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs, which I love, but I would love to see our products in boutiques and spas across the nation. One of my passions is product formulation, so being able to foray into more spa-specific formulations, like exfoliators or masks, is an exciting prospect.”
She adds, “ROMI is reaching an audience that appreciates high-end luxury skincare with very transparent ingredients and ways of processing those ingredients.”
Romina is very happy about what she’s been able to accomplish so far. “I'm proud that I was able to grow and establish a business based on my personal journey of transformation and my passion in life. And, I did it all while working fulltime at other jobs.”

Did you know more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year? At New Gild Jewelers, the team agrees – luster is better than a phone call. Instead of traditional mothers’ jewelry, which usually features a mix of the children’s birthstones, they offer one-of-a-kind gifts that cater stylishly to the occasion.
Why not give something that’s both trending and timeless – like pearls? Some outstanding pearl picks for her are as follows.
This gorgeous double-wrap bracelet is a beautiful combination of materials. Featuring Tahitian gray pearls, rose and yellow gold, and sterling silver, this tiny locket symbolizes the eternal nature of a mother’s love. $1810.

This exceptional necklace is lovingly crafted in 18K yellow gold, including handmade solid gold beads. The sweet pearls are called “Keshi” and they charmingly resemble tiny petals. Their color is natural with tones of pink and taupe that flatter every skin tone. $3695.
3.
Moms love chocolate and this lovely strand of chocolate Tahitian pearls is sure to provide understated luxury. The 14K yellow gold clasp finishes the look. $2175.

New Gild fell in love with this unusually cut purple spinel. It has a high table and a steep crown, which in layman's terms means it's a chubby stone. Determined to design a setting that would show off its depth, a detached halo with tiny diamonds in 14K yellow gold was crafted. The mounting is a marvelous showcase for a deep stone. $3482.
The gear ring set embodies clever design meeting beautiful materials. This 14K yellow gold set features a 1.65 ct purple spinel, with accent diamonds and a unique interaction between the two pieces. $4860.
Given the current high profile of Barbie, this gorgeous and pure pink 1.27 ct spinel from Tanzania brings a smile to everyone's face. Set in a 14K white gold mounting covered in white diamonds, it's a luxury piece for Barbies everywhere. $5470.
Here's an example of a gorgeous 1.19 ct Burmese red spinel that's red like a stoplight. This stone illustrates the remarkable color and saturation coupled with high clarity that's possible with spinel. $5193.

3. 4. 2.Meet Dr. Bailey and Dr. Erin
ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNETHESE FEMALE DERMATOLOGISTS DIG DEEP INTO THEIR CAREERS, LIVES AND ADVICE
“"We are so lucky to practice in a field with a very strong female presence. I have many amazing female mentors and colleagues so I feel extremely well-supported."
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A FEMALE DERMATOLOGIST?
Dr. Bailey Lee: I absolutely love being a female dermatologist. I have generally experienced only mutual respect amongst dermatologist colleagues of all genders and have extremely rewarding relationships with my patients. The positivity that I feel when helping a patient with a chronic, debilitating skin condition or simply helping someone feel more confident in their own skin makes the challenges worth it.
Dr. Erin Luxenberg Hammer: We are so lucky to practice in a field with a very strong female presence. I have many amazing female mentors and colleagues so I feel extremely well-supported.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION?
Dr. Bailey: There is nothing better than connecting with patients and making a positive impact in their lives. Whether it's the teenager with acne or the new mom with melanoma, the ability to treat them with care and dignity so that they are able to live their life and not have to focus on their skin condition is incredibly rewarding.
Dr. Erin: I think we have the best job in the world. What a privilege to be able to enhance patient health in a way that they can often quite literally see.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR TAKING CARE OF FEMALE SKIN?
Dr. Bailey: The single most important thing is to understand that we all have different skin types and skin care needs. What works for one person on TikTok may cause problems for another skin type. I often preach to my patients that keeping it simple is the best policy: a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer and the most important common thread that all skin types require for healthy skin: sun protection.
Dr. Erin: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE MINNEAPOLIS COMMUNITY?
Dr. Bailey: I have lived in this community for 20 years and every year I grow to appreciate it more. I love my walk to work every morning, seeing and interacting with my community, and knowing that I am providing them with a valuable service.
Dr. Erin: We live and work in such a vibrant area. I love walking to work. I love chatting with neighborhood business owners. I love our “small town” mentality while being part of the “big city.”

ELEVATE YOUR LOOK
Five Styling Tips for Every Wardrobe
ARTICLE BY BRENDA IRIS RODRIGUEZ-MENDLIKStyle is not just about following trends or wearing the latest, especially when said trends come and go so quickly. Having a great and stylish look should not be difficult to achieve either. Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind. These tips have helped me create wardrobes that are both efficient and effortless.
PLAY WITH COLOR
Don't be afraid to add a pop of color to your outfit. I recommend experimenting with different colors and shades that complement your skin tone. Have you ever stood in front of a mirror and looked totally washed out? Yes, there are certainly some colors that look better than others on different skin tones, so keep this in mind when styling.
If you're new to wearing color, start small by incorporating colorful accessories like scarves, jewelry or shoes (my favorite). The amazing thing about color is that it carries a lot of weight when it comes to your wardrobe and makes such a powerful statement.
MIX DRESS CODES
Let's say goodbye to the limitations of traditional dress codes and mix different styles to create a visually appealing look. Take, for example, the "elevated casual" dress code, which combines elements of professionalism with a structured blazer and casual flair with a pair of jeans. You can infuse sophistication by pairing it with a silk cami or a t-shirt to add an edgy twist.
RULE OF THIRDS
This is the one rule I do not break. We can often think that rules limit us, but nope not this one. Instead, this rule helps your outfits look visually appealing without fail.
The suggestion is that you aim for a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio. For example, a beautiful top with high-waisted jeans and heels. Here you are carrying the 1/3 on top and 2/3 on the bottom. Now, if you add a long cardigan that falls mid-thigh, it turns into 2/3 to 1/3. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is architecture; it is a matter of proportions.”
FOUNDATION PIECES
Foundation pieces are items that you are going to repurpose again and again. These pieces are simple and classic, which gives versatility in creating different outfit combinations. With this said, I am not one to recommend a white button-up, striped long sleeve or basic black t-shirt. Everyone has different foundation
pieces, depending on their lifestyle. Basics for me are those clean pieces that are not overly trendy, align with YOUR personal style, and allow you to pair other things with them, like colors and textures. These are the pieces that will go with your "fun" items.
FIT IS IMPORTANT
Fit is everything. No matter how stylish your outfit may be, if it doesn’t fit properly and to your shape, it simply won’t look right. Ensure that you take your clothing pieces to a tailor to achieve the perfect fit and know what fabrics and cuts look best on you. You wouldn’t believe how many people are wearing the wrong size and fit – usually, a size or two too big – resulting in a frumpy look. Whether it’s hemming pants that bunch too much, adjusting the waist that gaps, or even shortening the sleeves of a blazer, all these small adjustments make a big difference. This one might take a little work initially but knowledge is power and you will feel so good knowing what fits right.
Remember clothes are more than just pieces of fabric, they’re like a shot of confidence, your forcefield of self-assurance. So flaunt it, own it and show the world what you're made of. The more you use these tips and the more informed you are about your style and body, the more your looks will evolve.

UNIQUE SOLUTIONS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH AND BEAUTY
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN JOHNSONLearn how Ancient Traditions can Have Modern Positive Impacts on our Bodies
When Minnesota native Meaghan Moakley became familiar with Chinese medicine, she began to take a more holistic approach to health and wellness. “A lot of my dietary and lifestyle choices have made a tremendous impact on my health,” she says. “Chinese medicine looks at the world through the seasons, the weather, and how we can best behave to respect the earth and our bodies.”
With it being springtime in Minneapolis, she says we're moving into liver season. “It’s about helping to support the liver with sour foods like lemon and making sure that we're getting sunlight in our eyes within an hour after waking. These behaviors are rooted in ancient medicine, but have such modern impacts on our hormones and nervous systems.”
The more she learned and practiced Chinese medicine, the more she wanted to share it with others. In 2021, she founded Azalea Acupuncture in Edina.
“It wasn't my original plan to open a private practice – I studied Spanish and taught English as a second language. I loved teaching, so I just kind of blended the two and now with Azalea, I do a lot of patient education.”
Her patients, she says, become fascinated with Chinese medicine and how it relates to their bodies.
“Much of what we look at with Chinese medicine is how everything in our body is connected. They'll share with me constellations of symptoms that may seem very random to them, but they're actually painting a perfect picture for me as a Chinese medicine practitioner of what's going on internally.”
Meaghan offers a whole range of treatments to help patients feel and look better. “We love combining acupuncture with cupping, which is a powerful tool to help relieve stress and anxiety in the body.”
It's also great for muscle tension. “A lot of people will come in complaining of a tight upper back, neck, and shoulder area because they carry all that stress and tension there. A combination of acupuncture and cupping can be super helpful and provide them with immediate relief that will last a while.”
Another popular treatment is gua sha. “Gua sha is another Chinese medicine modality that's become more popularized thanks to Instagram and TikTok over the past couple years.” It’s used to treat pain and can be used on the face for aesthetic purposes. She often combines gua sha with cosmetic acupuncture.
“Cosmetic acupuncture feels like a newer thing, but that's actually been part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years,” says Meaghan. “With the same principles being used on internal health, it’s going to lead to an expression of external beauty.”
The needles she uses stimulate collagen production and elastin in the face. “When people make repetitive facial movements, it can lead to lines between the eyebrows. With the needles and gua sha, we can help promote more blood flow to the face, which is going to lead to a more radiant complexion.”
For people who are afraid of needles, she puts their minds at ease. “The needles that are used in an acupuncture setting are filiform. They're typically pain-free and if there is any sensation, it would be a slight pinch, almost like a mosquito bite.” Many of her patients often fall deeply asleep during their sessions.
All of the treatments are conducted by Meaghan, a licensed acupuncturist through the Minnesota Medical Board. She will even do home visits if someone has had an injury and is not very mobile.
As she looks back on her first few years in business, Meaghan is proud of all she has accomplished.
“Opening Azalea has really connected me with a lot of people in the Twin Cities. It’s definitely inspiring as a business owner to know that there are many people who care about the area’s well-being.”

Spring Floral Bowl
BRING THE BRIGHTNESS AND FRESHNESS OF SPRING INDOORS BY CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL BOWL ARRANGEMENT.
Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.
Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!
Supplies:
• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet
• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)
• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)
• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)
• 12” square cut chicken wire
• wire cutters
• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire
• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)
• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)
Preparation & Assembly:
• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.
• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.
• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.
• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.
• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.

HANDMADE
BREAKING BREAD
Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. This easy-to-follow recipe is exploding with flavor and is simple to make.
FOCACCIA
This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ¾ cups warm water
• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 4 cups flour
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• Optional:
• Fresh rosemary
• Coarse sea salt
• Fresh pressed garlic
INSTRUCTIONS:
Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.
Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
