Holidays: Connection and Giving

Dear Neighbors,

It's that amazing time of year when giving and connecting with loved ones starts to take over our minds, hearts and schedules. Isn't that a beautiful thing? Regardless of how you celebrate the holidays, the energy that makes this time of year so amazing is GIVING. Giving is a pure act of LOVE. Through acknowledging the people who make your life feel so full, leaning into the opportuni ties that help us grow, and sharing in the abundant energy of giving is what this world thrives on… love. Love is what connects us.

We have a beautiful issue to share with you this month. We have many inspiring ways to connect with loved ones and give unique sentiments of thoughtfulness. We'll start first with a generous gift from Michael Broussard, a Holladay resident. Michael came to me in October with an idea that had been percolating for a while. No spolier alerts here... details inside. However, his generous gift to the community and a deserving family every quarter in 2025 is nothing short of inspiring and heartwarming! Michael’s team will be choosing a family once a quarter and we’ll be announcing the winner on Instagram! What an incredible offering and such a generous gift.

As the first snow falls this winter, we wanted to call out a unique spot in Millcreek known to some as Shred Row. Outdoor enthusiasts have created an “outdoor mecca” when it comes to gearing up for your next adventure on the mountain. We wanted to bring light to an incredible area and highlight the experts that keep our outdoor adventures safe, geared up and ready to go. While you’re out bustling around, consider supporting the local businesses that keep our community thriving. Not just at Shred Row, our Public Market at City Hall activated by Utah’s Own and many other local favorites throughout the holiday season.

We also thought it would be fun to share some holiday memories and traditions from our very own City Council. Through gifting, connecting and celebrating… may your home be filled with health, vibrancy and love this holiday season. May your offerings and interactions this holiday season reflect the true joy and warmth you feel for your life and others. Much warmth and gratitude for you and this beautiful community we all enjoy.

From all of us at Millcreek City Lifestyle, Happy Holidays!

With love,

December 2024

MICHAEL BROUSSARD’S MISSION TO BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER

Giving Back

ARTICLE BY LAUREN CAGGIANO

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MICHAEL BROUSSARD

“Through his work, Michael offers more than lodging; he creates moments for families to heal, reconnect, and cherish time together.”

As a dedicated family man, businessman, and philanthropist, Michael Broussard’s vision of success extends well beyond professional achievements. With a strong commitment to community, Michael has a new way to give back — by providing families in need a chance to reconnect through a stay at one of his vacation properties.

Michael owns and operates Broussard Properties, a short-term vacation rental management firm that’s shown him the power of family bonding during quality time away. Now, he’s inviting readers to nominate families for a complimentary stay at one of his properties, especially those in challenging circumstances. A community board will choose one deserving family each quarter in 2025, giving them a space to connect, find peace, and create precious memories.

"The ability to gather, no matter the circumstances, is critical for families to heal and move forward," Michael reflects. He hopes that this initiative will be a source of comfort, whether families are navigating difficult times or celebrating life’s milestones. “If someone has a child that is terminal and they want to spend time together,” he explains. “In other cases, it might be a celebration of life for a family member. It’s happening more and more — people are traveling to get that critical time together.”

Michael’s team is dedicated to creating a full experience for the selected families, from providing lodging to helping plan activities — entirely free of charge. His mission is to allow families to focus on what matters most: connecting, sharing, and finding joy in each other’s presence.

This initiative is close to Michael’s heart, as he treasures every moment with his own family. He and his wife Debbie, together for 31 years, especially look forward to holiday traditions, like their annual Christmas

ski trip. Working alongside Debbie and their daughter Isabelle, Michael also feels incredibly grateful to be building a legacy with those he loves. “Every day, I get to wake up and be so excited about what I’m doing and where [the businesses are] going,” he shares. “It’s a really fun chapter.”

Beyond Broussard Properties, Michael has expanded his impact with the Broussard STR Investment Fund, focused on purchasing single-family vacation rentals and developing a resort. This venture enables him to uphold high hospitality standards and create meaningful investment opportunities that reinvest in the community.

With homes in both Utah and the Pacific Northwest, Michael is equally committed to his communities in each location. He serves as board president for the Shores at Stillwater near Park City and actively supports causes like the Nature Conservancy, protecting the beautiful landscapes that mean so much to him. “Being part of advocacy organizations like these helps our company portfolio serve the greater good,” he adds, motivated by a desire to give back.

Through his work, Michael offers more than lodging; he creates moments for families to heal, reconnect, and cherish time together. By sharing his values and resources, Michael hopes to inspire others, too, offering a space for families to rest, laugh, and be together. If you would like to nominate a family or send a submission, you can contact Michael via mail at:

Michael Broussard Properties

2350 East Arbor Lane PO Box #17265 or via email at info@broussardproperties.io. Be sure to submit all entries by December 22nd.

Myths Unfold on Ice

Millcreek Common Presents A Magical Winter Tale on Ice

The Millcreek Magic Ice Show is returning to Millcreek Common on December 5th, 6th, and 7th, bringing a dazzling mix of dance, skating, production and storytelling to the local community. With two performances each day at 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM, this exciting event showcases young local talent in a beautifully produced spectacle. Tickets are $5 per person, but seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot online at millcreekcommon.org.

This year’s theme, “Myths,” introduces a captivating story centered around a legendary tale from Millcreek itself. Audiences will learn about the origins of mythical creatures such as the Yeti, gnomes, and even Santa Claus. The storyline not only entertains but also educates, offering insight into where these timeless myths began and their cultural significance. Attendees will be left to decide what is myth and what is legend. The show’s beloved mascot, Milo the Moose, will

headline the show and guide spectators through various myths and legends, blending education and entertainment into an unforgettable half-hour performance. Combining skilled ice skating and dancing with vibrant lighting and special effects, the show highlights the incredible talent in the area.

Community Life Events Manager, and show producer, Rachel Nasse, says “Months of planning and dedication go into crafting this magical experience, making it one of the most anticipated events of the season. I truly believe that the talent we have here, locally, provide us with a ‘Cirque Du Soleil’ experience.

Whether you’re attending for the educational aspect, the stunning performances, a fun family event or the local community spirit, the Millcreek Magic Ice Show promises to be a fun and engaging gathering for all ages.

HESPIRIT OF SHREDROW

TLOCAL SHOPS THAT FUEL WINTER FUN

ARTICLE BY DENNIS NAZARI AND VALERIE BIANCULLI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA WIGGINS
Dennis, Salty Peaks
Lone Pine Gear Exchange

For outdoor enthusiasts, Shred Row is a unique shopping destination.

Over the past 20 years, customer-service-oriented, brick-and-mortar outdoor specialty retailers have been disappearing at an alarming rate. Fortunately, Millcreek, Utah, has preserved one of the largest and most diverse concentrations of independently owned outdoor specialty shops in the state—and maybe even the world. Along a half-mile stretch of 3300 South from 2800 East to 3200 East, you’ll find an impressive lineup of shops catering to nearly every action sport imaginable. Locals affectionately call this “Shred Row.”

For outdoor enthusiasts, Shred Row is a unique shopping destination where virtually anything you need for adventure sports—whether skiing, snowboarding, biking, climbing, or skateboarding—is at your fingertips. The shops here have created a “one-stop shop” for the community and beyond, rivaling the convenience of any big-box retailer with their

depth of expertise and passion for the sports they specialize in.

Shred Row’s ecosystem is a blend of longtime local retailers, small specialty shops, and a big-box anchor, including:

• REI: The resident big-box store for outdoor gear and apparel

• IME: Specializing in climbing and pack rafting gear

• Ski ‘N See: Focused on skis and season rentals

• Milosport: A staple for skateboards and snowboards

• Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop: Featuring snowboards, skateboards, and the Utah Snowboard Museum, home to the world’s largest public display of vintage snowboards

• Daleboot: Custom ski boot fitting and manufacturing

• Level 9: Offering skis and bikes

• Lone Pine Gear Exchange: skis and bikes

Scott & Paul, IME
Jake, Milo Sport

This collective hub provides a high level of expertise, rental and repair service, consignments and community engagement. Nearby fixtures like the Momentum Climbing Gym and the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center, located in the Lone Pine building, enhance Shred Row’s offerings. Salty Peaks, with over 1,000 vintage snowboards on display, also serves as a museum of snowboarding history, preserving the legacy of the sport for future generations.

What makes Shred Row truly unique is the level of personalized service. Unlike big-box stores or online retailers where customer service may be an afterthought, these shops are all about hands-on help. The staff are experts who live and breathe the activities they support. Many are active outdoor enthusiasts themselves, ready to share firsthand knowledge. From custom boot fitting at Daleboot to technical guidance on climbing gear at IME, Shred Row retailers are passionate about their craft.

For those who crave real human interaction, Shred Row is a treasure trove. These are shops where you can have a conversation, ask questions, and get advice from people who know more than Google. They also offer online shopping for convenience, but when it comes to fitting gear like boots and helmets or testing equipment, there’s no substitute for an in-person experience.

One of the standout features of Shred Row is its commitment to accessibility. Many shops offer rentals and demos on the equipment they sell, making it an excellent resource for beginners. Some, like Lone Pine and Salty Peaks, even work with adaptive sports and foundations like Make-AWish to help people with disabilities enjoy snow sports.

Shred Row shops also support a “reuse and recycle” ethos, selling high-quality used and refurbished gear year-round. Lone Pine, Milosport, L9, IME, and Salty

Peaks all offer consignment and used gear sales, giving outdoor enthusiasts the chance to find high-quality items without breaking the bank.

The level of repair and maintenance services available on Shred Row is a major draw. Salty Peaks, for example, specializes in snowboard binding parts, including hard-to-find vintage items for restoration projects. Lone Pine, L9, Milosport, Salty Peaks and REI offer top-notch repair services for skis and snowboards. From hand tuning to heat molding boots, the repair services on Shred Row are endless. Many shops even offer on-the-spot repairs and will let you observe the process, with staff ready to explain the work they’re doing.

Scott from IME describes Shred Row as “the gateway to the Wasatch,” with easy access from I-80 and I-215. Mike from Daleboot calls it “where the city meets the mountains.” Cal Egbert from Milosport highlights the area’s “locally owned and operated” atmosphere, emphasizing that, with the exception of REI, all Shred Row retailers are locally owned and contribute to the community’s tax base.

The long history of the shops on Shred Row has made this stretch of road a cultural hub for the Utah snowboarding and skiing communities. Daleboot, for example, has been a leader in custom ski boot fitting since the 1960s, with several patents that continue to influence ski boot design. In the mid-1980s, Milosport was founded by Dimitrije Milovich, a pioneer of snowboard design with his Winterstick brand. His designs, which were produced in Millcreek, helped shape the snowboards we see today, influencing everything from shape to functionality. Salty Peaks, Utah’s first snowboard-only shop, opened in 1987 and pioneered the “shop team” concept, fostering a community of local athletes who went on to national and international success.

Shred Row has grown into more than just a shopping destination; it’s a center for events and culture. Community contests, movie premieres, and outdoor events keep the area vibrant, attracting snowboarding and skiing fans from across the Wasatch Front. Many of these events are organized or sponsored by Shred Row retailers, who continuously give back to the community. In October, Dennis from Salty Peaks, who doubles as a snowboard historian and curator of the Utah Snowboard Museum, expanded the Brighton Resort Snowboard Museum, featuring pro snowboard models from riders who honed their skills in the Wasatch.

Ben Johnson from Lone Pine has been a forward-thinking advocate for expanding Shred Row’s influence, creating community spaces to make Shred Row a complete experience for locals and visitors. Johnson, along with Jason from Ski ‘N See, both credit the snowboard shops for making the area a prime location for new outdoor retail ventures. Shred Row also attracts top retail talent, which brings an even higher level of service. Scott from IME emphasizes that experienced staff are crucial when selling technical gear, especially

for activities like canyoneering where safety is paramount. Dennis from Salty Peaks notes the dedication to employee training, transforming new hires into snowboard experts in 90 days. This culture of expertise and training has helped make Shred Row a springboard for industry leaders.

Shopping on Shred Row is more than a transaction—it’s an experience. As Dennis from Salty Peaks points out, the “human-tohuman experience” is something online retailers can’t replicate. Supporting these local businesses is like supporting the soul of Millcreek. Shred Row stands as a reminder of the value in shopping local.

Whether you’re a skier, climber, snowboarder, or mountain biker, East Millcreek’s Shred Row offers top-quality gear, rental and repair services, and expert guidance for outdoor adventures year-round.

Council Members’ Favorite Holiday Traditions

Memories of Merriment

Bev Uipi

In my Tongan culture, it’s customary for brothers to give gifts (tokonaki) to their sisters on birthdays and holidays. Since we were young, Millcreek kids into our adulthood, we took tokonaki to our Utah aunties, Ngatu Vimahi and Selu Ika, for their birthdays and holidays. My dad is the youngest of eight, and the only brother living in Utah. Tokonaki were simple, it could be a cake, fruit, meat, or potatoes. My siblings and I had something to give our aunties in honor of my father’s love for his sisters for all they did to love and support him, as well as help raise us. I am grateful to understand, appreciate, and teach my son, Xane, one of the many ways to show love and respect within our Tongan culture during the holidays. It literally takes a village! 'Ofa ke mou ma'u ha Kilisimasi fiefia (Merry Christmas)!

Cheri Jackson

One of our favorite holiday traditions is collecting nativity displays from our travels. I have nativities from Iceland, Poland, Denmark, Haiti and more. My sons have brought me nativities from their travels too. The farthest came from Madagascar and was hand-carved.  It is fun to look for nativity displays when we are in different parts of the world, and it is fun to see other cultures' depictions of Christ's birth. Putting up the nativity displays every December reminds us of our travels. They are our favorite holiday decorations.

Thom Desirant

In my family, no holiday celebration is complete without a few rounds of euchre. Euchre is a team based, trick-taking card game from the Midwest that my family picked up at some point. There’s something special about the playful banter and strategizing with teammates, followed by laughter and maybe a little friendly rivalry. It’s our way of connecting and creating new memories, one trick at a time. Like many Utahns, my family is spread out across the country, but it's always so easy for us to pick everything back up across the card table like no time has passed.

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. While a simple cup of hot cocoa can warm the soul, why not take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board? Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy. Let’s explore the wonders of old-fashioned hot cocoa and all the accompaniments you can use to create your very own hot cocoa charcuterie board.

THE DELIGHTS OF OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Old-fashioned hot cocoa transports us to simpler times and brings with it a sense of nostalgia. The slow, traditional process of making hot chocolate from scratch – with real chocolate, milk and a touch of sweetness – provides a distinctly memorable experience for the holidays.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MINDY WESTER

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA

CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure, and serve as a sweet centerpiece to your holiday gatherings.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

VARIATIONS TO SAVOR

Indulge in some exciting recipes that are sure to elevate your hot chocolate into fun and festive beverages during the holidays and throughout the colder months.

MINTY FRESH WONDER

Embrace the festive season with a mint-infused hot cocoa. Fancify your beverage with a peppermint stick or make your

own crushed candy cane dust for a touch of holiday cheer. This minty delight is a crowd-pleaser and a perfect indulgence for cozy winter evenings.

SPICY AZTEC ELIXIR

Channel your inner adventurer with an Aztec-inspired hot cocoa. Infuse your drink with a touch of chili powder and a dash of cinnamon. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for a festive presentation. This fiery blend will ignite your senses and warm you from the inside out.

GROWN-UP GRASSHOPPER

Transform your drink into a rich adult-only grasshopper hot cocoa by adding 2 oz. of crème de menthe or a shot of peppermint schnapps. Adorn with a crushed candy cane rim for a playful offering.

DECADENT SALTED CARAMEL INDULGENCE

Elevate your hot cocoa experience with a drizzle of homemade salted caramel. The combination of slightly bitter cocoa and sweet, buttery caramel is a match made in heaven. Sprinkle an extra pinch of sea salt for that irresistible contrast.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
