Dear Neighbors,
At this point in summer you've soaked up so much fun with your kiddos, your loves, yourself. I hope you're feeling a full heart, a bunch of memories, (a little unorganized) and mostly gratitude for this life you get to experience. It's these beings we bring into our lives that make it that much more full and expansive.
Earlier this year, I experienced the most difficult transition for a Mom... my babies who, mind you are 24 and thriving, MOVED. Out. Of. State. (insert crying so hard emoji face.) Empty nesting phase II. It nearly ripped my heart out. While I am very happy I have instilled independence, confidence and intuition in them to seek new horizons, listen to their inner guidance, and let their heart lead their life; it was the hardest thing I've experienced yet. Living in Utah without them didn't feel the same. My son has been my ski buddy. My daughter is my yoga and hiking buddy. Life lost it's color and meaning.
I was chatting with a dear friend on my trek home from Seattle, "I'm going to make the next part of my life, the best part of my life" and I felt that. Truth is, it's just a new phase. It's like when they stopped nursing, or learned to walk... letting go of the old stage and leaning into the new holds a new feeling of unfamiliar.
My kids attended summer camp at the JCC. Swimming lessons was part of their day. I remember my daughter excitedly ask me to watch her jump off the diving board. I had to be on the side... watching my little human jump into a deep pool was gut wrenching. But she did it, and she swam! My fear for her immediately turned to excitement. That's kind of what I'm feeling now. In May, I gave her the most magical wedding. While things have changed, she is still my sweet 'lil lightening bug. I hope you embrace all the seasons of your kids lives with curiosity and softness. Everything changes. We know this but when it really does change it honestly sucks.
I hope this issue inspires you to be more present with your children at every age. Enjoy all the little moments. The hard moments. The ways we can help them thrive.
For those of you who "Mom Hard" I see you.

An interview with Lance Black, Founding Partner at Gabb
Q: GABB WAS CREATED WITH A MISSION TO PROTECT EVERY CHILDHOOD WITH KID-SAFE TECH. HOW DID THAT MISSION COME TO LIFE?
Gabb was born out of a growing concern: kids were being overexposed to harmful content, addictive apps, and online dangers through traditional smartphones. From the beginning, the goal was clear—make parenting easier by creating tech designed specifically for kids.
“Our phones don’t include internet browsers or social media by default,” says the Gabb team. “We help reduce screen time and eliminate exposure to many of the biggest online threats. We want to empower kids without compromising their safety.”
Q: WHAT MAKES GABB PHONES SAFER THAN TRADITIONAL SMARTPHONES?
Gabb devices are intentionally built from the start with child safety in mind. There are no browsers or social media apps, which drastically limits access to inappropriate content and potential online predators.
But it doesn’t stop there. Gabb Messenger uses AI to flag potentially inappropriate conversations. Gabb Safe Video Calling can detect and block incoming or outgoing nude images and notify parents—giving families the chance to have important conversations before problems escalate.
Gabb Music also fills a big need: “Parents love that kids can stream artists across every genre and era from the world's largest safe music library—no explicit lyrics, no bleeps, just great music.”
Q: HOW DOES GABB HELP FAMILIES FIND A HEALTHY TECH BALANCE?
“Too much tech, too soon can actually harm development,” the Gabb team explains. That’s why they created the “Tech in Steps” approach, which allows parents to gradually introduce more capabilities and independence as kids grow in maturity. Gabb’s lineup—from kid watch to tween phone to teen phone—grows with the child, allowing them to build healthy tech habits over time.
Q: GABB IS ALSO VOCAL ABOUT ANTI-BULLYING EFFORTS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INITIATIVES YOU’VE BEEN PART OF?
Gabb recently partnered with the Governor’s Social Harms campaign to spotlight how social media is impacting youth mental health. “We shared our research and provided tools for families to better understand how online bullying and toxic social media content are affecting their kids.”
Q: ARE THERE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS THAT HELP FURTHER YOUR MISSION?
Digital wellness is at the core of what Gabb does. They’ve led the Gabb Digital Detox two years running, encouraging families to unplug during the Global Day of Unplugging. They’ve also partnered with groups like Wait Until 8th, OK to Delay, and IRLNY to educate families about alternative tech paths.
In 2025, Gabb launched the Gabb Foundation to donate safe tech to families experiencing financial hardship. “Every kid deserves access to healthy connection, regardless of their circumstances.”
Q: CAN YOU SHARE A STORY OF SOMEONE POSITIVELY IMPACTED BY GABB?
“In Indiana, 130 high school students swapped their iPhones for Gabb phones for a month. The results were incredible,” the team shares. Students reported improved sleep, mental health, and social belonging. One boy said, ‘I left my room and made the best friends I’ve ever had.’ When the month ended, many dreaded returning to their old phones. One girl called it, ‘like getting another full-time job.’ ”
Q: GABB PROMOTES REAL-LIFE CONNECTION. HOW DO YOUR PRODUCTS SUPPORT THAT?
“Traditional phones steal attention. Gabb phones are engineered to give it back,” the team explains. Even their Gabb Watch, a safephone kids can wear, includes fun features like Gabb Go, a game that encourages kids to complete chores and physical activity to earn coins. “One mom told us her child begged to vacuum just to teach their digital cow a new backflip trick.”
Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PARENTS TRYING TO DECIDE WHEN TO GIVE THEIR CHILD A PHONE?
“You don’t have to give your child everything all at once,” the team says. “Start with a safephone and add features gradually. It’s about empowering kids in a way that aligns with their maturity and gradually grows independence.”
Q: WHAT’S NEXT FOR GABB?
Gabb continues to innovate and expand their outreach. From product development to nonprofit work, everything is shaped by a single goal: making safe, meaningful connection possible for kids everywhere.
Q: HOW DOES GABB STAY CONNECTED TO FAMILIES’ NEEDS?
“We invite and reach out to parents and kids to share feedback constantly,” the team says. “That input helps shape our products, improve our services, and ensure we’re moving in the right direction.”

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SLC BALLET
At SLC Ballet, every plié is an invitation to play, imagine, and grow. “From the beginning, my mission has been to offer strong ballet training— whether students want to dance for fun or pursue it professionally,” says founder Teruyo Davis. “We stay true to the basics, because that’s what creates a future audience and patrons of the arts.”
Davis is on a mission to preserve the beauty of classical ballet in a world that moves faster than ever.
“Ballet teaches patience, discipline, and delayed gratification,” she explains. “You don’t get rewarded right away, but when you do, it’s deeply fulfilling.”
For the youngest dancers—some as young as four—the experience starts with play. “We make imaginary pizza during stretching,” she laughs. “They get to pick the toppings, and sometimes the pizza flies away or turns into a birthday cake. It keeps us all young.”
Creativity is at the heart of their teaching. “Kids are naturally creative. We just give them a little structure or inspiration, and let them explore,” says Davis. Teachers encourage storytelling, imaginative movement, and emotional expression through dance, helping kids process feelings they may not yet have words for.
Katheryn Nattress, a teacher and parent at the studio, has seen firsthand how this philosophy can transform lives. Her daughter Emma began dancing at SLC Ballet at age four, too shy to move in class. “She wanted to dance so badly, but was completely frozen,” Nattress recalls. “I was literally moving her arms for her.” Today, at 15, Emma has danced lead roles, won awards, and received scholarship offers from top ballet schools across the country. “She’s confident, self-directed, and completely in love with dancing.”
But it’s not just the technical training that makes the difference—it’s the sense of belonging. “When you do something hard together, it bonds you,” says Nattress. “Some of my daughter’s closest friendships have come from dancing. The dancers support one another and grow together.” That sense of connection spans generations, with entire families sharing the stage in studio productions. “There’s nowhere else I know where a parent and child can perform together,” she adds. “It’s incredibly special.”
The impact reaches far beyond the studio. Dancers learn how to lead, listen, adapt, and persevere—skills that carry into school, relationships, and life. “You can see it,” says Nattress. “They grow into strong, expressive humans.”
SLC Ballet’s commitment to inclusivity and professionalism shines in every performance. Their most recent show featured 115. “Our shows are professional-level experiences,” says Davis. “The stage becomes a magical space where dancers of all ages come alive.”
“We call it catching the ballet bug. It’s that moment when the lights hit, the music swells, and a child realizes—this is where I belong. Even if they leave for a while, the bug always brings them back.”
And once a dancer steps on stage, something special happens. “We call it catching the ballet bug,” Davis smiles. “It’s that moment when the lights hit, the music swells, and a child realizes—this is where I belong. Even if they leave for a while, the bug always brings them back.”
At its core, SLC Ballet is about connection. “Arts make us human,” Davis says. “Ballet is a universal language. It’s how we connect, express, and transform. And it all starts with a little curiosity—and a plié.”That commitment to artistry, inclusivity, and community recently earned SLC Ballet the honor of being named Millcreek’s September Business of the Month.
5 TIPS FOR YOUR
Be prepared and specific: say “1/2 inch” instead of “short,” “ears rounded,” “tail long,” etc. Take notes on what you liked or didn’t for next time. It may take a few grooms to get it just right, but it will get there! And groomers never take it personally if you want changes!
Bring a photo of a style you like or take one after a groom you love. Clear shots of the face, feet, side, and back will help your groomer match it. Ask your groomer to note the style and tools used. Staying with the same groomer will also help, as your groomer and pup will get to know each other over time, it will improve the result.
Proper care between grooms is key to getting the results you want. Most grooming breeds need a professional groom every 6–8 weeks plus daily or weekly brushing to keep their coat mat-free and healthy. Not sure what your pup needs? Just ask! Our groomers are happy to create the best plan for you and your pup.
Not everyone has time to brush their dog every night. That’s okay. Some breeds, like doodles, may need more upkeep than expected. Ask your groomer for an easyto-maintain cut. Having your beloved pup comfortable should always be more important than what they look like.

Our mission is to revolutionize the dog care industry by elevating the experience for every pup and their human through every service we provide. Because everyone deserves a place they trust for their pup. Great grooms start here.

Meet two inspiring young women whose lives have been enriched by Women Who Succeed , a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Utah’s future female leaders. Through mentorship, education, and connection, this program is helping the next generation rise with confidence, purpose, and strength.
MENTORSHIP, GROWTH & THE POWER OF WOMEN WHO SUCCEED
ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When Vaishnavi Kothamasu joined Women Who Succeed , she expected a formal program, but what she found was a warm and encouraging space that helped her to grow both personally and professionally. Now heading into her junior year, Vaishnavi reflects on how the mentorship, resources, and community have made a lasting impact on her life.
The program’s monthly themes—from mindfulness to financial literacy—provided Vaishnavi with tools she could apply directly to her academic and extracurricular pursuits. In fact, the financial knowledge she gained through Women Who Succeed helped her win first place in her event at both the state and regional levels of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competition. She credits the program’s speakers, group discussions, and workbooks for giving her a strong foundation in money management and leadership.
Beyond competitions, Vaishnavi says the mentorship and skills she’s gained—especially around time management, confidence, and networking—have helped her navigate the pressures of high school and set bigger goals for her future.
Her advice to other young women? “Don't be afraid to reach out and get involved.” For Vaishnavi, Women Who Succeed is not only a program, but a path toward becoming the best version of yourself.
For Annie Puerta, joining Women Who Succeed began with a simple poster in her high school hallway—and quickly turned into a life-changing opportunity. The program’s welcoming environment connected Annie with like-minded young women, supportive mentors, and experiences that helped shape both her academic goals and professional ambitions.
Through Women Who Succeed , Annie was paired with mentors who offered invaluable guidance, specifically a VP at Goldman Sachs by the name of Grecia Rojo who encouraged her to apply for a competitive internship. That encouragement paid off—Annie recently scored a summer internship with Granite Credit Union and believes those connections, along with the support of the program, helped strengthen her resume and confidence.
Annie also received two scholarships through the organization and credits the program with inspiring her to aim higher. Now on track to graduate college in just three years with a major in accounting and a minor in advanced financial analysis, she’s also considering a CPA and law school in her future.
Her advice for other young women? “Don’t let anyone else define your potential, the sky is the limit” Annie believes Women Who Succeed has made a positive impact—not by doing the work for you, but by reminding you that you can.

DORIE OLDS SHARES THE EXPERIENCE THAT RESHAPED HER LIFE’S WORK
ARTICLE BY DORIE OLDS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY DORIE OLDS
It was 2006. I was sitting at the desk in my shared office, a partner in a group practice, when the phone rang. A desperate mother was seeking help for her three-year-old daughter. The little girl had choked on a piece of chicken and was now terrified to eat solid food. Her mother blended all her meals into smoothies so she could drink them instead.
As I listened to this frantic mother, I explained that I had never worked with children before and didn’t believe I could help. She began to plead, saying she had called many professionals and no one was willing to work with her daughter. Because of her desperation, I agreed to try.
I had trained in 2000 as a Consulting Hypnotist with the National Guild of Hypnotists and had been working with adults seeking change in their lives. I began working with her daughter, Deseree. Our sessions were successful. She became more relaxed, began eating solid food again, and was so proud of herself. Her parents were overjoyed.
There are so many areas where hypnosis can help. If you know where you are and where you want to be, hypnosis can help bridge that gap.
Since then, I’ve worked with children on bedwetting, improving grades, test anxiety, public speaking, general anxiety, and more. I’ve helped young ballet dancers overcome fear of performers in “The Nutcracker” wearing rat costumes. I’ve worked with gymnasts who lost confidence doing backflips—once fearless, then suddenly afraid.
I also work closely with parents, helping them shift their reactions, communicate more clearly, and manage their own stress when facing their child’s struggles. That piece is often key to longterm success.
From that moment forward, I began working with children.
One girl I worked with was constantly fighting with classmates. After our sessions, her mother called to say the school counselor had noticed a drastic change in her behavior.
I also work closely with parents, helping them shift their reactions, communicate more clearly, and manage their own stress when facing their child’s struggles. That piece is often key to long-term success.
Today, I teach other consulting hypnotists how to expand their practice to include children.
Each year, I share what I’ve learned at the National Guild of Hypnotists’ annual convention—so more professionals can support the next generation with confidence and compassion.
