CELEBRATING MILFORD

WOMEN WHO EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITY

May in Milford

Hello Milford! Welcome to our May issue of Milford City Lifestyle. May brings with it a number of things to enjoy, including the onset of reliably warm temperatures and the unofficial kickoff to summer on Memorial Day weekend. And who could forget Mother’s Day, when we honor and celebrate the strong women who have guided, educated, and inspired us.

As the seasons shift and our town comes alive with new energy, I am thrilled to introduce this special edition of Milford City Lifestyle, dedicated to the women who shape our community every day. This issue is a celebration of the remarkable women who lead and serve in ways both seen and unseen.

In these pages, you will meet entrepreneurs who have turned dreams into thriving businesses, advocates who work tirelessly to uplift those in need, and volunteers who give their time to make our town a better place for all. Their stories remind us of the power of resilience, innovation, and compassion – qualities that not only define these women but also strengthen our community as a whole.

Beyond celebrating achievements, this issue also highlights an essential topic: women’s health. This month, we sat down with medical professionals from Milford Med Spa and Diagnostic Imaging of Milford to talk about the importance of understanding one's body and the physical changes we endure over time. From wellness tips to expert insights, we aim to provide valuable information that empowers women to prioritize their well-being – because a healthy community begins with the health of its people.

It is our hope that these stories inspire you, spark conversations, and perhaps even encourage you to take part in the ever-growing network of women making a difference. We are honored to share their journeys, and we thank you for joining us in recognizing their contributions.

Correction: In the April issue of Milford City Lifestyle, we incorrectly stated that Zurita Insurance works with 15 insurance carriers. The agency actually works with 50 carriers.

How Women of Milford are Making a Difference

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STAFF

Wanda Carlson State Farm Insurance

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START OR GET INVOLVED IN YOUR BUSINESS OR COMMUNITY WORK?

I was inspired to start community work through the Girl Scouts, particularly with the Brownies.  This involvement taught me the value of giving back and making a difference.  As the Chair of the Milford United Way last year, I’ve seen firsthand how community service projects, like donation drives and grant distributions, foster a better place for everyone to live.  We can all make a difference one person, action, and donation at a time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES MILFORD SPECIAL WHEN IT COMES TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT?

In July of 2003, I moved to Milford. As a State Farm Agent, I love helping people and was looking to start volunteering in the community. During this process, I met Gary Johnson, former President of the Milford United Way.  He asked me to be on the Board, I said I would and am very glad that I did.  People, businesses, and nonprofit organizations who participate in community engagement make our city the best!

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES MILFORD SPECIAL WHEN IT COMES TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT?

Milford is known for being a “small city with a big heart.” This statement says it all. This charming town is very supportive and everyone loves to shop small and shop local. Over the years our customers have turned into good friends and I couldn’t be more grateful.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

My business’s greatest advantage is working alongside my daughters, Gabriela and Denisse. They share and respect the same values that I have. We have a unique craftsmanship that is not seen much anymore. I know my daughters will continue my legacy and this unique business.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED AS A WOMAN IN YOUR FIELD, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?

One of the biggest challenges as a working mother, especially as a healthcare provider, is finding balance between the demands of a high-stakes, often unpredictable job and the responsibilities of motherhood. The emotional and physical exhaustion from long shifts, the pressure to provide quality care, and the desire to be fully present for your children can create constant tension. Guilt—whether it’s about missing milestones at home or not being able to give 100% at work—is another major struggle. Prioritization, boundaries, and self-compassion become essential. I work to employ strategies to help manage the balance.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

As a PCP, the most rewarding aspect of my work is building long-term relationships with patients and their families and being able to support them through various stages of life and health challenges, ultimately making a positive impact on their well-being. It’s a privilege to be invited into someone’s personal world, and I am humbled to be included.

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS OR WORK CONTRIBUTE TO THE GROWTH AND WELL-BEING OF THE COMMUNITY?

I love having two roles as both the President of the Downtown Milford Business Association and a retail business owner downtown. Working to ensure the vitality of our community is so important.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

It’s rewarding to connect with people in my business and community. DMBA events bring people out to enjoy all that our town has to offer. The best part is the smiles on the faces of the kids and families that attend our events. It makes all the hard work worth it, because you feel how much people love Milford.

HOW HAS YOUR JOURNEY AS A WOMAN IN BUSINESS OR LEADERSHIP SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON SUCCESS?

I grew up loving art!  My career started in 1987 working with fashion photographers. Eventually, in NYC, I worked on magazine editorials and commercials and still love doing that today more locally.

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS OR WORK CONTRIBUTE TO THE GROWTH AND WELL-BEING OF THE COMMUNITY?

When I first moved to Milford I knew right away I wanted to raise my family here, be part of the community and open a makeup studio. That desire became reality in 2006. I love working with women of all ages to help them see their true potential while prioritizing their health by offering organic and natural makeup and skincare. The incredible support and small town feel is what makes having a business here such a rewarding and joyful experience.

NAVIGATING PERIMENOPAUSE

Understanding Perimenopause

WHAT IS PERIMENOPAUSE, AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM MENOPAUSE?

Menopause occurs when someone has gone a full year without a period, signaling an end to ovulation due to insufficient

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA SPATA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED BELENSKI
A Conversation with Courtney Holmes (DNP, APRN) of Milford Med Spa
“Symptoms can begin in the 30s, contrary to the common belief that they start in the 40s or 50s.”

hormone production. Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, often lasting ten or more years, marked by fluctuating progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen levels, causing irregular cycles and various symptoms.

AT WHAT AGE DO WOMEN TYPICALLY BEGIN EXPERIENCING PERIMENOPAUSE?

Symptoms can begin in the 30s, contrary to the common belief that they start in the 40s or 50s. The timing varies based on genetics and lifestyle. If a woman’s mother or grandmother experienced early or late menopause, she may follow a similar pattern.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS?

Initial symptoms include insomnia, anxiety, and hair texture changes due to progesterone decline. Testosterone reduction can cause fatigue and brain fog. Estrogen fluctuations lead to irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and weight gain.

In my own personal experience, I stopped sleeping well and experienced an uncharacteristic increase in anxiety for the first time in my mid thirties. I wish someone had told me earlier that I could treat these symptoms with progesterone and testosterone, so I could have avoided a decade of unnecessary suffering.

HOW DO HORMONAL CHANGES IMPACT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH?

Perimenopause affects the entire body and mind. Fatigue and depression can reduce participation in activities once enjoyed. Sleep disturbances from night sweats can lead to brain fog, affecting job performance. Many women worry about cognitive decline, only to find that hormonal balance improves their mental clarity.

WHAT ARE LESSER-KNOWN SYMPTOMS?

Rapid heartbeat, depression, anxiety, frozen shoulder, UTIs, and worsened ADHD symptoms can all be linked to perimenopause. Many women

undergo unnecessary cardiac testing or receive antidepressants that don’t alleviate symptoms. Hormonal balancing often provides relief.

Common Misconceptions and Diagnosis

WHAT ARE SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PERIMENOPAUSE?

Many believe estrogen replacement alone is the answer, but testosterone and progesterone are often more effective. Patients frequently come to me confused as to why an estrogen patch hasn’t helped, only to find they have estrogen dominance requiring progesterone. Estrogen is typically unnecessary until full menopause, which I confirm through lab monitoring.

HOW CAN WOMEN DIFFERENTIATE PERIMENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS FROM OTHER CONDITIONS?

A specialized healthcare provider can determine whether symptoms are hormone-related or stem from other medical conditions. Comprehensive lab evaluations, symptom assessments, and medical history reviews are essential. In my practice, I often identify underlying conditions requiring specialist referrals.

Treatment and Management

WHAT TREATMENTS HELP MANAGE PERIMENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) effectively improves symptoms and quality of life. This includes prescription progesterone, estradiol, and testosterone, available as capsules, injections, patches, creams, or pellets. Vaginal estradiol cream helps with genitourinary symptoms without affecting the entire body. Other options include antidepressants and psychotherapy.

ARE THERE NATURAL OR LIFESTYLE REMEDIES?

Yes. A high-protein, calcium-rich diet with fresh fruits and vegetables helps combat insulin resistance, muscle and bone loss, and weight gain. Women need 0.44-0.55 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Strength training is also beneficial for bone and muscle health.

Preventative and Long-Term Health Considerations

“Advocate for yourself and find a medical provider who will listen and provide proactive treatments and advice. Support groups are wonderful for sharing ideas and connecting with others going through similar experiences.”

HOW CAN WOMEN PREPARE FOR PERIMENOPAUSE?

Educating oneself before perimenopause helps in making informed healthcare decisions. Recommended books include:

• The New Menopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver

• Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming and Carol Tavris

• The Menopause Brain by Dr. Lisa Mosconi

WHAT LONG-TERM HEALTH RISKS SHOULD WOMEN BE AWARE OF?

Hormonal decline increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, breast cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Testosterone and estrogen help prevent osteoporosis. Progesterone is protective against breast cancer. Insulin resistance rises with estrogen decline, raising the risk of diabetes.

Support and Advocacy

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN WHO FEEL UNSUPPORTED OR MISUNDERSTOOD?

Advocate for yourself and find a medical provider who will listen and provide proactive treatments and advice. Support groups are wonderful for sharing ideas and connecting with others going through similar experiences so you don’t feel alone. We have a monthly support group that women are welcome to attend, led by our menopause certified coach.

HOW CAN HEALTHCARE

PROVIDERS BETTER SUPPORT WOMEN EXPERIENCING PERIMENOPAUSE?

Providers must seek continued education on perimenopause. Many women on estrogen alone without progesterone experience estrogen dominance, leading to weight gain, mood swings, and breast tenderness. Proper hormone balancing is key to improving quality of life.

Early Detection, Lifesaving Results

Routine cancer screenings can be lifesaving, especially when it comes to breast cancer. Thanks to advances in diagnostic imaging, women today have access to more accurate and earlier detection tools than ever before. Dr. Vito Errico, President of Diagnostic Imaging of Milford, and his team are at the forefront of this effort, providing state-of-theart mammography and diagnostic imaging services that prioritize both patient care and early detection.

Founded in 1993, Diagnostic Imaging of Milford has long served its community. Dr. Errico joined the practice in 2000, with Dr. Eric Ragaza following in 2005 and Dr. Laura Soldano in 2014. Together, they have built a practice that emphasizes

teamwork and a commitment to excellence in imaging. While Dr. Soldano handles most of the mammography work, including ultrasound-guided biopsies, Dr. Errico oversees the practice’s operations and ensures patients receive high-quality care at every step.

“We work together to ensure everything from screenings to diagnostics runs smoothly,” says Dr. Errico. “Whether it’s following ACR (American College of Radiology) guidelines or walking a patient through next steps after a diagnostic mammogram, our focus is always on clear communication and patient support.”

One of the most important advancements in recent years is the adoption of 3D mammography, which Dr. Errico describes as “state-of-the-art.” With this technology, radiologists are able to detect smaller tumors than they could with traditional methods. “We’re now picking up tumors earlier and with more clarity,” Dr. Errico explains, which can significantly affect treatment outcomes, while also helping reduce call back rates for additional mammography views.

In addition to 3D mammography, they also utilize ultrasound as a supplemental tool, particularly for women with dense breast tissue. “Combining 3D mammography with ultrasound provides better outcomes,” he says. This approach allows for more accurate diagnoses and helps ensure that nothing is missed.

For those unfamiliar with mammograms, the process is straightforward.  Dr Errico provided us with the following information when asked what patients should know about screening protocols.  The American College of Radiology (ACR) recommends annual screenings starting at age 40 for women of average risk. For those considered high-risk—such as women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations or a strong family history of breast cancer — screenings should begin between the ages of 25 and 30 and may include additional imaging like ultrasound or MRI.

“Mammography is a safe and effective method for early detection,” Dr. Errico emphasizes. Knowing your family

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Dr. Vito Errico is the president of Diagnostic Imaging of Milford, located at 30 Commerce Park. The practice was originally founded in 1993. After training at Yale University in neuroradiology, Dr. Errico joined Diagnostic Imaging of Milford in 2000, followed shortly by Dr. Eric Ragaza in 2005 and Dr. Laura Soldano in 2007. Together, their team works to provide expert, high-quality care to patients using innovative technologies while adhering to state guidelines.

Services offered at Diagnostic Imaging of Milford include mammography, arthograms, X-ray, MRI, steroid injections, ultrasound, imageguided biopsy, and more. Though mammography is just one of the services provided, Dr. Errico and his team emphasize the importance of routine screenings for early detection. For the physicians at Diagnostic Imaging of Milford, patient comfort and care is their driving purpose, and they continue to invest in the Milford community through their offered services and ongoing community outreach.

history and understanding your risk is a critical part of the screening process. For women with dense breasts, supplemental screening can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, delays in screening remain common. “During COVID, many patients skipped their annual exams,” says Dr. Errico, “but early detection is key.” He cites that early-stage breast cancer, if detected, has a survival rate of over 99%.

It’s clear that diagnostic imaging plays a vital role in preventative care, but Dr. Errico and his colleagues all expressed gratitude that their services have grown in popularity.  “We’re lucky that over the past two decades, awareness of what we do has grown substantially.”  Increased understanding has led to much better outcomes for women all across the nation.

Dr. Errico, a neuroradiologist by training who studied at Yale, appreciates the detailed anatomy that imaging reveals. “I enjoy the complexity of it — seeing anatomy clearly and using that to help patients,” he says. His passion for medicine and patient care drives the practice’s mission of combining technology with a personalized touch.

Diagnostic Imaging of Milford  loves their community. They have participated and plan to continue to participate in events like the Milford Hospital Mother’s Day 5K and the Milford Oyster Festival on the Green, providing outreach and raising awareness about the importance of cancer screening. Located near the Post Road and the waterfront, their independent practice offers what Dr. Errico calls “more personalized and traditional medical care.”

“We’re not part of a larger hospital system, which means we don’t have facility fees, and our patients enjoy easier access and close communication with our staff,” he explains.  Even the parking is easier to coordinate for their patients. Dr. Errico says “From the easy parking to the utmost care, we are for the Milford community.”

Dr. Errico wants women to understand that mammograms are a simple, safe, and crucial part of their healthcare routine. “Don’t delay your screening,” he says. “Early detection saves lives.” He also offers a word of appreciation for Dr. Soldano, whose expertise in mammography, radiology, and biopsies makes her an essential part of the team.

Ultimately, the work of Dr. Errico and his team reflects the power of early detection and the importance of accessible, community-based, boutique care. Through innovation, teamwork, and a deep respect for their patients, they continue to make a difference for women in the Milford community and beyond.
