When I moved to this area from the midwest, I thought I was arriving in a new town, ready for a new chapter. What I didn’t realize then was that I was actually coming home—just a few centuries later than expected.
While researching my family history not long after settling in, I stumbled upon something remarkable: my ancestors lived right here in Milford, almost 300 years ago. They were part of the town’s early story, before their journey carried them westward across the Midwest, where generations of my family would eventually settle. And now, all these years later, I’ve found myself back where it all began— curating a magazine that tells the stories of this town, its people, and its evolving sense of place and purpose. It’s a homecoming I never saw coming, but one I’m deeply grateful for.
When I selected Milford to launch this arm of City Lifestyle, I did so because I saw so much possibility among the community here. Now, I see that there was always something deeper at work behind that decision.
This issue—The Men’s Issue—is rooted in that very idea of legacy and return. We explore the quiet strength of fathers and sons, the traditions passed down through shared work and weekend rituals. We take a closer look at men’s accessories, not just as fashion statements, but as subtle markers of identity and personal history. And we dig into family stories from right here in Milford—stories that remind us how the past lingers in our present, often in ways we don’t fully see until we stop to look.
What does it mean to belong to a place? What does it mean to return to one? These are questions I’ve been turning over a lot lately, and I hope this issue gives you a chance to reflect on them, too.
Whether you’ve lived in Milford all your life or you’re just finding your way here like I did, I hope these pages offer something familiar, something surprising, and something that feels a little like home.

IMPORTANT PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
“Body MRI screening is a non-invasive, non-radiation imaging test that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to scan multiple parts—or the entirety—of the body for signs of disease, abnormalities, or cancer, often before symptoms appear. It’s commonly used as a preventive tool for early detection, especially in individuals at higher risk for certain conditions (like cancer or genetic disorders). Diagnostic Imaging of Milford is a leading provider of this life-saving, early detection technology.”

HOW CELLINI DESIGN JEWELERS IS KEEPING TIME
ARTICLE BY STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED BELENSKI
Nestled on the border of Orange and Milford, Cellini Design Jewelers is more than just a retail shop — it’s the continuation of a legacy that began nearly 80 years ago. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the store is helmed by Marisa Laros and her brother Bobby, who took over the business four years ago.
Their story begins in the 1940s, when Marisa’s maternal grandfather launched the original business focused on jewelry repair and smallscale manufacturing. Working alongside his
Jeannie, Bobby and Bob Bengivengo
wife and two brothers, he laid the foundation for what would become a multi-generational enterprise. In 1979, Marisa’s parents and uncle opened the first retail store, and the family tradition has continued ever since.
The store’s name, Cellini , is a nod to the Italian jewelry-making school in the region where Marisa’s family hails from — a heritage that continues to influence their values and craftsmanship today. While the wholesale side of the business has slowed in recent years, Cellini has expanded its retail offerings while staying true to its roots.
“All of our jewelry and watch repairs are done on-premise,” says Marisa. “That’s something we’re incredibly proud of, because not many standalone stores can still say that.”
Watchmaking is a particular point of pride. Marisa’s grandfather always worked with Swiss-trained watchmakers, a tradition her father, Bob Bengivengo, embraced and still contributes to. Cellini offers full-service repairs for both battery-operated and mechanical watches, including automatic and manual models. Their in-house watchmaker can disassemble, clean, and reassemble even the most delicate vintage timepieces — a valuable service for customers who bring in heirloom pieces passed down through generations.
In fact, many customers are generational themselves, returning to the store for engagement rings, estate appraisals, and custom repairs. Known primarily as a bridal jeweler, Cellini carries a range of designer lines, including the woman-led Sylvie collection, alongside Swiss-made Tissot and Italian Locman watches.
Since moving to its current location in 2013, Cellini has flourished in a community that feels both tight-knit and dynamic.
“All of our jewelry and watch repairs are done on-premise... That’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”
“The businesses here are so supportive of one another,” Marisa notes. “We’ve collaborated with local restaurants, boutiques — it’s a really special place to be.”
Whether you’re shopping for a milestone moment or restoring a treasured piece, Cellini Design Jewelers offers craftsmanship, care, and community in every experience.

STEPPING THROUGH TIME
ARTICLE BY JULIAN SARIA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.J. GARCIA PHOTOGRAPHY
Located at 74 Broad Street in downtown Milford, Arciuolo’s Shoes has built a legacy deeply rooted in family tradition, innovation, and community connection. Established in 1921 by Francesco Arciuolo, an Italian immigrant who opened the original shop on Naugatuck Avenue in Milford’s Walnut Beach neighborhood, Arciuolo’s Shoes represents over a century of craftsmanship, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Early tragedy profoundly shaped the family’s journey. Francesco unexpectedly passed away in 1930 from a heart attack, leaving behind his wife, a young son, and the business he had just begun nurturing. His son, Matthew Arciuolo, only 12 years old at the time, was forced into early adulthood. He stepped forward alongside his mother and uncle to carry on the family business. Despite having only a seventh-grade education, he became widely respected in the community for his intellect. Matt Arciuolo III describes his grandfather as “the smartest man he’s ever met.”
The family faced another significant challenge during World War II when Matthew Arciuolo was drafted, serving honorably as a quartermaster. Upon returning home to Milford, he found anti-Italian sentiment affecting businesses and families alike. In response, the Arciuolos temporarily rebranded their shop as The Wildemere Shop, strategically navigating difficult times. When tensions eventually eased, they proudly reclaimed the original Arciuolo’s name.
A pivotal moment of innovation occurred when a customer requested orthotics — an unfamiliar term at the time. Rather than declining due to his lack of knowledge, Matthew confidently agreed, then quickly turned to local library resources to educate himself and fulfill the order. This ingenuity marked a turning point, laying the groundwork for the family’s future specialization in custom orthotics and footwear.
MILFORD’S STORIED SHOEMEN, THE ARCIUOLOS
Fast forward several decades, and the Arciuolos remained at the forefront of industry innovation. In the early 2000s, Matthew Arciuolo Jr. formalized his expertise by becoming a certified Pedorthist, an important professional milestone reflecting their specialized skills. Around this period, Arciuolo’s Shoes began integrating cutting-edge digital technologies, pioneering lasercut orthotics, a groundbreaking advancement at the time. It was during this innovative phase that Matt III began working at the store in sixth grade.
In the late 2000s, an Adidas sales representative visited the store, mentioning that her sister, a member of the U.S. Olympic bobsled team, needed their shoes. After trying and appreciating the custom orthotics, the team’s coach approached Matt’s father seeking further enhancements to improve the athletes’ speed. Rising to the challenge, the Arciuolos experimented with aerospace-grade carbon fiber insoles designed to act as springboards for athletes. The U.S. team secured an Olympic gold medal in 2010 at Vancouver Winter Olympics, prompting the creation of a new brand, VKTRY, now recognized globally and utilized across numerous professional sports leagues.
Today, tradition and modernity coexist within Arciuolo’s Shoes. Visitors can witness and benefit from the traditional tools passed down through generations, such as a 50-year-old Brannock foot measurer, wooden shoe stretchers, traditional knives, dyes, and an exceptionally durable grinder powered by a repurposed 1938 Westinghouse washing machine motor, custom crafted by the same young man who led the shop during WWII. Matt III humorously noted they “have six backups just in case, but the original has yet to need any servicing or maintenance in nearly 100 years — so we’re set for the next 600.”
Matt III, who currently oversees daily operations alongside his father, is deeply invested in maintaining and strengthening the community ties his family has nurtured over the decades. Inspired by his father’s extensive involvement and beloved status within Milford, Matt actively engages in local events, serves as an alderman, and participates in the Downtown Milford Business Association, demonstrating his commitment to sustaining the family’s meaningful legacy of community service.
For Matt, the most fulfilling aspect of running Arciuolo’s Shoes transcends community involvement and innovative branding — it lies in the tangible impact his work has on people’s lives. Creating customized footwear for individuals facing unique fitting challenges has become a source of immense personal satisfaction. Matt deeply understands that quality footwear can significantly improve someone’s daily experience, succinctly stating, “When your feet hurt, everything hurts.”
Arciuolo’s Shoes remains an enduring hallmark of Milford’s vibrant community, driven by a genuine passion for their craft. As Matt III articulates, “This was the only thing I ever wanted to do — I never wanted to be an astronaut or a fireman; I’ve always wanted to do what my dad did.” This sentiment encapsulates the heart of Arciuolo’s Shoes: a passionate, community-centered family of shoeman committed to lasting for generations — at least for another 600 years.

Milford Junior Major League is making waves in youth baseball — and not just in Connecticut. With eight state championships in the last seven years, including the 2024 15U Legion State Title, the program has cemented itself as a powerhouse in player development and competitive excellence. In 2024, the league’s momentum continued with a 12U Cal Ripken World Series appearance, earned after clinching the 2023 11U Regional Championship.
But Milford’s success doesn’t just happen at the top — it starts from the very beginning. The organization welcomes players as young as two years old through its wildly popular Born To Play program, which has boasted over 100 toddlers annually for the past three consecutive years. From there, players progress through T-Ball and Coach Pitch before joining the Cal Ripken divisions and eventually advancing to Babe Ruth and Legion baseball at age 13.
In 2021, Milford Junior Major League breathed new life into the dormant American Legion Post 196 baseball program, which had been inactive for three years. Just one year later, the revitalized effort made history: Milford’s 15U team won both the Babe Ruth and Legion State Championships in the same season — a feat never accomplished before.
A Q&A WITH JOHN WEZENSKI ON THE SPIRIT OF MILFORD JUNIOR
“JUNIOR MAJOR LEAGUE IS A true town ORIENTED RECREATION LEAGUE. WE WILL NOT TURN ANYONE AWAY FOR OUR recreation PROGRAMS. THAT WAS THE VISION OF the league WHEN IT STARTED AND WE KEEP THAT TRADITION.”
About the Organization
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THIS JUNIOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ORGANIZATION?
2025 will be Junior Major League’s 70th season. Created in 1955, Milford Junior Major League was founded to give every young athlete in Milford a chance to play baseball. Thousands of players have come through the program in the last 70 years. Many have come back to the league to coach or sponsor.
HOW DOES YOUR LEAGUE DIFFERENTIATE ITSELF FROM OTHER YOUTH BASEBALL PROGRAMS?
We created a Born To Play program for 2-3 year olds. Many surrounding leagues start at 4 or 5. In addition, we affiliate ourselves with many national affiliates giving us an opportunity to provide our players with multiple opportunities through Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth, American Legion Baseball as well as other affiliates.
Player Development
HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY AND RECRUIT YOUNG TALENT FOR YOUR LEAGUE?
Junior Major League is a true town oriented recreation league. We will not turn anyone away for our recreation programs. That was the vision of the league when it started and we keep that tradition. We do hold tryouts for our American Legion program (Ages 13-19) but will always provide opportunities for anyone who does not make it.
WHAT KIND OF TRAINING PROGRAMS DO YOU PROVIDE FOR PLAYERS TO DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS?
We have opened and operated our own indoor training facility for the last 4 years to give our player’s the opportunity in the

winter to prepare for the upcoming season at an affordable price. What started as a 4 month rental has turned into a 3 year venture which allows us to always have somewhere to practice during inclement weather.
DO YOU HAVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH PROFESSIONAL OR COLLEGE TEAMS TO HELP PLAYERS ADVANCE IN THEIR CAREERS?
Junior Major League is fortunate to have league officials and Post 196 American Legion coaches who have college contacts and have been able to provide insight to our players throughout the process. We pride ourselves on helping each player individually make a choice that is in their best interest and fully support them along the way.
HOW DO YOU SUPPORT YOUNG ATHLETES BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD?
On the field is easy, we provide them everything they need from practices, games and tournaments to reach their full potential. Our league makes significant investments each season in field upgrades and equipment to ensure our players
get the most out of each practice. Off the field, we have partnered with many local organizations to provide our players opportunities for service hours and to become involved with the community.
Challenges and Growth
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOUR ORGANIZATION FACES?
Rising costs is a major challenge. We pride ourselves on keeping our prices down to allow everyone an opportunity to play. In addition to securing sponsors, maintaining facilities and finding the appropriate balance between development and competition. Additionally, adapting to the ever changing youth sports trends keeps us striving to improve.
HAVE YOU SEEN A GROWTH IN INTEREST IN JUNIOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, AND IF SO, WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE IT TO?
100%. Our registration numbers have continued to rise since 2018 and in 2025, we will see a 20% increase in registration from 2024. It’s an exciting time and it’s all due to the volunteers and coaches that we have that continue to run successful divisions and put the kids first.
Community Involvement
WHAT ROLE DOES THE COMMUNITY PLAY IN SUPPORTING THE LEAGUE?
The community plays a huge role in supporting the league. Our sponsor list continues to grow and we have been fortunate that over 95% of our sponsors have returned over the last 4 years because they see the dedication and time the league puts into the players and their families. The community provides our families with additional fundraising opportunities as well.
ARE THERE ANY COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS OR INITIATIVES YOUR LEAGUE IS INVOLVED IN?
Our league is affiliated with a variety of organizations in Milford. Junior Major League organizes the baseball program for American Legion Post 196, we are also members of the Downtown Milford Business Association and participate with Walks With Buddy each year. We understand the importance of organizations working together and there is not an organization that asks for help and hasn’t received it from Junior Major League and we are very proud of that.

Future Plans
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
We want to continue to grow and maintain the success we have had over the last 7 years. We want to continue to increase our registration numbers and identify new families to become members of the extended and executive boards.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF JUNIOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EVOLVING?
We see continued growth and success on and off the field. We believe that our growing partnerships with Milford-based organizations will only strengthen our impact on our community and that will lead to increased exposure and more families giving us an opportunity to show that Junior Major League is a true family.
