IMPORTANT PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE

“Body MRI screening is a non-invasive, non-radiation imaging test that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to scan multiple parts—or the entirety—of the body for signs of disease, abnormalities, or cancer, often before symptoms appear. It’s commonly used as a preventive tool for early detection, especially in individuals at higher risk for certain conditions (like cancer or genetic disorders). Diagnostic Imaging of Milford is a leading provider of this life-saving, early detection technology.”

Anchoring Milford's Charm

The Past, Present, and Future of Lisman Landing
Drone Photo of Lisman Landing, Photographed by Ed Belenski

When Jim Donegan first took on the role of Harbor Operations Director in the spring of 2020, he brought with him over 30 years of marine industry experience and a lifelong passion for Milford. Now also serving as the city’s Harbor Master, Jim continues to nurture Lisman Landing, a cornerstone of Milford’s appeal as a premier coastal destination.

Lisman Landing isn’t your typical marina, Jim emphasizes. Operated by the City of Milford and the Milford Harbor Management Commission, it’s a “transient marina,” offering flexible, pay-as-you-go dockage. Visitors can rent slips on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis, making it convenient for boaters planning brief stops, weekend getaways, or extended coastal cruises. “Milford is an amazing destination for boaters,” Jim notes, highlighting the marina’s prime location at the head of the harbor, just steps from downtown Milford’s bustling shops, diverse restaurants, and local attractions.

“Lisman Landing really comes alive in the summer,” says Jim with fondness. Visitors and residents alike gather to enjoy vibrant patios, beautifully maintained gardens, and lively pavilion spaces. His favorite moments are those summer afternoons and evenings when the marina fills with laughter, music, and the energy of people enjoying Milford’s charming waterfront atmosphere. Families stroll by the harbor, children (and adults alike) enjoy ice cream, and visitors relax, making lasting memories.

convenient for boaters planning brief stops, weekend getaways, or extended coastal cruises.”

One distinctive advantage Lisman Landing holds is its exceptional proximity to Milford’s train station. “Having the train station close by makes it incredibly easy for visitors coming off boats or meeting friends here,” Jim explains. He describes scenarios where boaters leave their vessels secure in the well-protected harbor while hopping on a train for brief adventures or errands elsewhere. Conversely, it’s just as convenient for visitors to arrive by rail and join friends already docked at the marina, connecting rail and water transportation.

This easy integration of rail and water transport has encouraged day-trippers and weekend explorers from cities such as New York and New Haven to discover Milford’s charm. It’s not unusual for newcomers stepping off the train to immediately find themselves immersed in festive atmospheres or local celebrations happening right at Lisman Landing.

Jim points out that the marina attracts a wonderfully diverse mix of visitors. Local residents frequently gather at the marina, enjoying leisurely lunches, casual strolls along the

harbor, or sweet treats like ice cream by the water. Boaters, meanwhile, journey from near and far. For many, Milford becomes a favorite repeat stop, while others experience its charm for the first time as part of an extended coastal voyage. Each visitor adds to the dynamic community spirit that characterizes Lisman Landing.

With a robust calendar featuring beloved events such as Oyster Fest, Irish Fest, October Fest, craft fairs, concerts under Fowler Pavilion, and farmers markets, Lisman Landing gives boaters a front-row seat to everything going on downtown. It provides visitors with a perfect vantage point and direct access to the vibrant happenings in Milford’s lively district.

When asked about his recommendations for visitors docking at the marina or stepping off the train, Jim says that advice naturally varies by weekend. “It really depends on what’s going on,” he shared. From live music and food festivals to seasonal celebrations and family-friendly activities, Milford offers something unique and engaging each weekend, particularly in

“The marina team is always ready with recommendations and assistance, ensuring each visitor feels welcomed and connected to the community.”

Guests at Lisman Landing will find an inviting array of amenities to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable. Trained dockhands warmly greet visitors, assisting with tie-ups and settling boats securely into slips. Mornings begin leisurely, with complimentary coffee and newspapers available to boaters—a perfect way to ease into the Milford day. Practical comforts like Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, accessible restrooms and showers, and a complimentary pump-out service for overnight guests add convenience to any length of stay.

the warmer months. Jim is especially enthusiastic about Milford’s upcoming Kick-off to Summer event on June 21st, promising live entertainment and food trucks in the Lisman Landing parking lot, and a fireworks display from Fowler Field.

Lisman Landing isn’t just a picturesque spot for boaters—it’s a well-equipped facility designed to cater to the diverse needs of its visitors. The marina boasts 35 transient slips, accommodating vessels up to 65 feet in length, with a minimum dredge depth of 7 feet at mean low water.

For those exploring beyond the marina, easy access to local car and bicycle rentals makes discovering Milford’s downtown and scenic surroundings effortless. The marina team is always ready with recommendations and assistance, ensuring each visitor feels welcomed and connected to the community. Given the marina’s popularity, especially during peak weekends, reservations via the Dockwa platform are recommended.

Through Jim Donegan’s dedicated stewardship and passion for Milford, Lisman Landing remains central to the city’s allure, blending maritime tradition with vibrant community life. Whether arriving by rail or sea, visitors swiftly discover the essence of Milford: a welcoming, engaging, and charming coastal destination.

GENESIS OF Milford

TURNING CAR SHOPPING INTO A DESTINATION EXPERIENCE

ARTICLE BY CHELSEA SPATA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIMMY IENNER JR., MARK ARNOLD
Photographer: Mark Arnold

In the heart of Milford where the beloved Howard Johnson’s once stood, a new era of luxury automotive experience has emerged. Genesis of Milford, the newest flagship showroom for the premium car brand Genesis, is redefining what it means to buy — and experience — a vehicle. And just like the iconic roadside stop that came before it, this location aims to become a destination in its own right.

The dealership is situated just off Interstate 95, at the gateway to Milford. For many in the community, this prime location is more than just convenient — it’s meaningful. “What better way to establish ourselves than to be part of a landmark location like Howard Johnson’s was for a very long time?” says C.J. Bianco, Sales Manager at Genesis of Milford. “This location has always brought positivity to the community, and we’re honored to carry that legacy forward.”

Open for a year now, the showroom celebrated its official grand opening on June 10 of this year. But it’s already making waves not just in Connecticut, but across the East Coast. As Genesis’s flagship location – the only one of its kind – every new Genesis dealership is modeled after this one.

Inside, customers and staff alike are greeted by a luxurious environment designed for comfort and connection.

“Whether you’re a client or a team member, this location has everything you could want,” C.J. explains. “From the beautiful showroom and new service department to high-end amenities like TVs, premium lighting and sound, snacks, and coffee machines — it’s all part of the Genesis experience.”

Genesis, whose name fittingly means “the beginning,” takes pride in presenting their vehicles in a space that mirrors the quality of their engineering. With modern designs, cutting-edge technology, and unmatched warranties — including an industry-leading million-mile powertrain warranty — Genesis vehicles are built for longevity and performance.

One of the newest additions to their lineup is the 2025 GV80 Coupe, a striking fastback edition that’s already turning heads. “It’s the first year for the GV80 Coupe, and it’s a game changer,” C.J. says.

build relationships. Whether you buy a car or not, we want to have that conversation.”

The staff at Genesis confirms this philosophy, taking pride in their team and the training they receive.

“I really believe in the product,” says Client Advisor Tricia LaSasso-McNary. “As staff members, we’ve become product specialists for Genesis; we actually care about the brand and care about the car.”

That approach extends into the community as well. Genesis of Milford is committed to being more than just a business — they’re advocates for the city itself.

“The car is engineered to make you feel planted — like you’re part of the vehicle.”

“It’s got a 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine with electronic supercharging, all-wheel drive, and a luxurious finish. The car is engineered to make you feel planted — like you’re part of the vehicle.”

But what truly sets Genesis of Milford apart is the philosophy behind the experience. The dealership has removed the traditional desk-at-the-door model in favor of a more welcoming, pressure-free environment. “When you walk in, you feel at ease. We’re not just here to sell you a car; we’re here to

“Milford is phenomenal,” C.J. says. Once you come here and see what this town has to offer, you can’t help wanting to be part of it. We’re here for the long haul and we want to make sure Milford knows we are part of the community.”

As Genesis of Milford settles into its role as both a local landmark and a regional leader in luxury automotive, one thing is clear: this is just the beginning.

YOUR SUMMER SKIN Survival Guide

A CONVERSATION WITH KRISTINA FOREMAN OF MAKEUPMAKEUP

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, summer brings with it a host of challenges for our skin. From increased UV exposure to dehydration and breakouts, maintaining healthy skin during the warmer months requires a thoughtful approach. To help us navigate the season with confidence and a glowing complexion, we spoke with professional makeup artist Kristina Foreman. In this conversation, she shares essential tips, product recommendations, and professional advice on how to protect and nourish your skin all summer long.

“Sun

protection isn’t just for summer. UV rays are active year-round, even on cloudy days.”

MAKEUP ARTIST KRISTINA FOREMAN’S SUN-SAFE STYLE TIPS

What’s the #1 mistake people make with sunscreen?

Most people don’t use enough or forget to reapply. That’s how we get sun damage that causes damage can be hard to reverse. We need about a shot glass of sunscreen for your body and a nickel-sized amount for your face. Reapplying every two hours is highly recommended or immediately after swimming or sweating. That’s where we forget to protect our skin and risk getting sun damage.

Is sunscreen enough?

And how do I find a clean SPF?

Sunscreen is just the beginning. I highly suggest looking for SPF in 30 or more , non-toxic, non nano blends as top recommendations – EWG.org is a great resource. Wearing SPF shirts also helps for prime outdoor hours, adding a wide brim hat is essential. I try to avoid direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. personally. A late afternoon beach trip is safer and more relaxing.

What styles of SPF products are available if we don’t want to look greasy all day?

First, my absolute “go-to” trick is adding my favorite mineral SPF 30 Skin tint serum foundation if I want to look fresh and ready for the day at work or play. It goes on smoothly, leaves a beautiful skin fresh look with SPF and skin care serum in one. My second recommendation is applying my SPF 30 clean mineral powder over my cream SPF for added protection. It’s so easy to reapply for added coverage throughout the day and doesn’t leave you looking dry or cakey (my go-to products are available at my studio in downtown Milford)!

What’s one thing about skincare that people should keep in mind?

Sun protection isn’t just for summer. UV rays are active year-round, even on cloudy days. I wear SPF every day on my face, neck and hands to prevent sunspots and premature aging and I love being outside a lot. You don’t need to avoid the sun—just enjoy it smarter. Picnics Pairings

Have you been eyeing a breathtaking view or a luscious green patch near a waterscape? For special times with your favorite people, nothing says warm weather fun like a picnic. Follow these tips for preparation ideas.

Ambiance: Throw pillows are a must. Pull them from your couches or invest in outdoor pillows that can be used repeatedly. A large throw is also essential to protect from moist ground and grass stains. Bring your favorite tunes with one of the many available portable speakers or unplug and enjoy the sounds of nature. Cut flowers add a wow factor.

Enjoy your perfect picnic!

CREATE A LIVELY, NUTRITIOUS, AND TASTY SENSATION AT YOUR NEXT COZY PICNIC

Gear: You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!

Accompaniments: A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. A lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc.
