Showing Up for Each Other (and Ourselves)

November has a way of sharpening our awareness— not just of the changing season, but of each other. It’s when the small, steady work of community starts to feel especially meaningful. People pitch in, check in, and reach out. And across Denver, we see how being part of something local really does matter.

This month, we’re exploring gratitude not as a vague sentiment, but as something that shows up in practice. It’s in how we care for others—and also how we care for ourselves.

You’ll find a feature on local ways to stay active as the weather shifts. Health isn’t just a New Year’s resolution—it’s a year-round act of respect for our bodies and minds, and one that many in our community are making space for.

We’re also diving into the often-tricky balance of business and personal life. With so many residents running small businesses, freelancing, or juggling multiple roles, we spoke with a one local business owner about how they manage boundaries, burnout, and staying present at home. Their insights are honest, helpful, and surprisingly universal.

And in a lighter, more joyful vein—Santa’s back. Our  Letters from Santa project is a highlight this month, and it’s a favorite for good reason. There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s eyes light up when they receive a personal note from the North Pole (with a little help from our hardworking volunteer elves, of course).

More than anything, this issue is about connection: to our health, our work, our families, and this place we all share. However you’re spending this season, we hope these pages give you something useful, something encouraging, and maybe even something to pass along.

Thanks for reading—and for being part of this.

a festive pairing

The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered.

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewü rztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.”

But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun.

“People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different.

“If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.”

For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey.

“With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.”

Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.”

What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.”

If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

“If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year?

“Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”

What about dessert?

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine?

“If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

“That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.”

James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife, Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.

HOW CANDICE NOGUERA TURNS NUMBERS INTO CONFIDENCE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

The Business of Balance

ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL RYNO
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that perseverance is everything.

When Candice Noguera talks about her work, her voice carries both warmth and conviction. As the owner of Bookkeeping & CFO Solutions 5280, she knows firsthand the challenges small business owners face, and the resilience it takes to push through them.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that perseverance is everything,” she says. “Especially in those first five years of business. That’s the critical mark where stability starts to set in.”

Candice’s journey into accounting began close to home. Inspired by her grandmother’s small business, she gravitated toward bookkeeping early on, eventually spending a decade in corporate America before deciding it wasn’t the right fit. “I wanted more lifeblood in my work,” she explains. “After I had my daughter, I knew the corporate gig wasn’t where I wanted to be. I wanted the flexibility to create something that not only provided for my family but also gave me balance.”

That decision led her to launch her own firm in 2010. What began as a solo practice has now grown into a thriving team of eight. The turning point came about six years ago, when she was teaching at the Accounting and Business School of the Rockies. Many of her students were struggling to find opportunities.

“I realized there was a need for jobs,” Candice recalls.

“That’s when I began hiring, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to build a team that shares the same values.”

Those values—integrity, accuracy, and a commitment to treating clients as people first—form the backbone of her firm. “When clients come to us, they’re not just numbers on a spreadsheet. They’re individuals running businesses, often feeling stressed and overwhelmed,” she says. “Our job is to take some of that weight off their shoulders.”

Community engagement is also a cornerstone of Candice’s approach. From free monthly lunchand-learn sessions to quarterly CFO calls, her firm prioritizes education and accessibility. “We want to

give our clients as many touchpoints as possible,” she explains. “It’s not just about doing the work—it’s about empowering business owners with knowledge and confidence.”

Outside the office, Candice is deeply rooted in Colorado. She enjoys riding motorcycles, snowboarding, camping, and spending time outdoors with her family. “Those activities are how I recharge,” she says. “Owning my own business has given me the freedom to create balance. That’s been life-changing.”

Still, Candice knows that balance doesn’t come easily for most small business owners—especially at the end of the year. That’s why she’s passionate about equipping entrepreneurs with the tools they need to stay ahead. Her first piece of advice? Don’t ignore your financial statements. “Too many owners wait until December or even January to scramble through their books,” she cautions. “That’s when sloppy work happens, and it can cost you.”

Instead, she recommends reviewing financials regularly and heading into the final quarter with clarity. “You need to know your net profit now—not later—so you can make smart tax decisions,” she emphasizes. “That gives you the chance to move money into tax-efficient areas before it’s too late.”

Looking ahead is equally important. “Don’t wait until January to set goals. Before the holiday season, create a forecast and a budget for the new year,” Candice advises. “Decide what your revenue goals are, outline your planned expenses, and be intentional about your growth.”

For many entrepreneurs, the temptation to save money by handling bookkeeping themselves is strong—but Candice warns against it. “One of the biggest mistakes I see is owners trying to do it all,” she says. “Bookkeeping is one of the very first things you should delegate. When you free yourself from that stress, you have more energy to actually grow your business.”

It’s not just about doing the work—it’s about empowering business owners with knowledge and confidence. “ ”

She knows that finances can feel intimidating, but she believes the key is to face them directly. “The most important piece of advice I can give is this: confront your finances head-on with an expert,” she says. “When you stop avoiding the numbers, you stop being afraid of them. And when you feel empowered instead of anxious, everything else in your business starts to flow better.”

Candice’s story is one of perseverance, balance, and service—qualities that resonate with the small business

community she champions. Through Bookkeeping & CFO Solutions 5280, she has built more than a firm; she has built a resource, a lifeline, and a reminder that financial health is foundational to every dream.

As the year winds down, her words carry particular weight: “The end of the year doesn’t have to be overwhelming,” she says. “With the right support and preparation, it can actually be the best time to set yourself up for success.”

Meeting Clients Where They Are

Helping people from all walks of life optimize health and fitness

As a young athlete, Central Park businesswoman and owner of E2O Health + Performance Physiology, Laura McDonald, became interested in the impact of the body’s relationship to exercise and stress. That interest led her to earn a master’s degree in exercise physiology and biology from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a certification as a clinical exercise physiologist from the American College of Sports Medicine. “I could see from an early age that it was a challenge to stay healthy in El Paso, TX,” she says. “Many parts of that city have food deserts, so access to healthy, nutritious food is hard to find.”

McDonald’s first job was in cardiac rehabilitation, an environment that helps post open heart surgery patients regain strength and confidence through movement. “I could see the power of incremental change,” she says. “Small consistent changes led to bigger positive strides, and I became a true believer in the transformative power of exercise and influence of everyday habits on long-term health.”

A job at National Jewish Hospital brought McDonald to Colorado and cemented her desire to be involved in sustainable and enjoyable preventive healthcare. With three girls under the age of six, and a packed schedule, Laura opted to open her own business in a gym space at TOCA, the former Bladium facility in Central Park.

With a clear understanding that a 24-hour day looks different for everyone, McDonald’s coaching philosophy is built on realistic, science-based strategies empowering her clients to take control of their health while gaining insight into how their bodies function. E2O offers one-onone strength training, small group classes, nutrition analysis, and other self-guided programs. A free initial consultation helps new clients get started. “The ultimate goal,” she says, “is that my clients can move, feel, and perform better for life.”

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

DESIGNED WITH INTENT

Consider locally crafted customized letterpress invitations, cards and gifts.

Cara Jo Knapp is passionate about turning paper into works of art. “Cards and invitations are highly personal,” she says. “Each one reflects the individuality of the sender.” Knapp founded Knapp Design Co. to provide a completely customized

“Letters from Santa emphasize that the holidays are not about what you have, they’re about who you are.”

stationery experience for her clients. “Every invitation, card or gift we create considers our client stories and is developed completely from scratch. I never use templates.” Knapp is originally from Traverse City, Michigan, and began her career at the Detroit Free Press after earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography and graphic design at Northern Michigan University. Today, you’ll find her creating custom designs at her storefront in Denver’s York Street Yards.

“It all starts with an invitation,” is the company’s tagline, referring to life’s invitations that open doors to relationships. “When I design a wedding invitation, the couple’s story is the motivation behind everything,” says Knapp. Her work is also dedicated to enriching a curated guest experience specific to the couple. “From save-the-date cards to the day of the event, everything is meticulously crafted and custom-made,” she explains. Knapp’s expertise

includes working with mixed materials to give every one of her designs a unique, luxe look. “I incorporate the use of leather, wood, velvet, and textured papers to create keepsakes, not just stationery,” she says. Sustainability is also an important component of Knapp’s business. “We can assemble and mail everything on-site and our products are made to be recycled or reused.”

Shopping a local small business empowers Knapp’s clients to work one-on-one to achieve personalized results they won’t be able to find elsewhere. She notes, “We are proud to offer a range of endless, customized design options.”

A visit to knappdesignco.com can get the design process going. Ready-for-delivery cards and stationery can also be purchased on her website for home delivery or free pick-up at the York Street Yards location.

LETTERS FROM SANTA

Making the holidays extra-bright for children, Knapp’s annual Letters from Santa project was inspired by her mother, who emphasized the desire to keep kids motivated through empathy and good behavior. “It was a happy accident that during the pandemic, many children were concerned that Santa might be quarantined,” explains Knapp. “The project became a way to reinforce positivity while reassuring kids that Santa would still come for the holidays.”

Santa’s letters are custom-made in Knapp’s studio for every child. From mid-October through November, parents can go online to fill out a short questionnaire about the recipient. Knapp takes that information and creates an individualized letter that is beautifully designed and magically packaged with small surprises.

Each package arrives in a plain brown box to preserve the secret. Reinforcing the holiday message of love, compassion, joy, acceptance, and togetherness, each child learns how they made special contributions throughout the year.

The letters are adorned with the hoof prints of Santa’s reindeer and compliment the caring and goodness in each child. Often placed under the tree on Christmas Eve, individual letters are crafted to underscore the holiday’s message of love, compassion, joy, acceptance, and togetherness, and each recipient learns how they made special contributions throughout the year. “Letters are meant to be saved and cherished as a reminder of the importance of kindness and the child’s milestones at every age,” says Knapp.

"We want to affirm that each child has the Santa they need by addressing their individual milestone moments. The letters emphasize that the holidays are not about what you have, they’re about who you are.”

Letters may be donated and sent to children affiliated with charitable organizations. The keepsake letters are given to families and children free of charge, removing economic disparity and making it possible for every child to have their own special correspondence. Knapp explains, “We want to affirm that each child has the Santa they need by addressing their individual milestone moments. The letters emphasize that the holidays are not about what you have, they’re about who you are.”

The standard Letters from Santa package includes some customizations, a Santa “nice list” highlighting three specific achievements per recipient, an ornament name tag, and a gold wax seal. The upgraded semi-custom

package adds multiple customizations and a red velvet envelope. Tagline options for 2025 include: “The Nice List is made of kindness, not things,” and “Where good deeds shine brighter then gifts.”

The Santa Shoppe at the Knapp Design Co. carries add-ons that include a “Nice List Member” iron or sew-on patch. (These are available in limited quantities.) Letter to Santa kits include two sheets of stationery and a stamped envelope, and gift tags and stickers are available for purchase.

Knapp Design Co. hosts a special website dedicated to Letters from Santa. Visiting, santa. knappdesignco.com provides access to questionnaires and initiates the custom letter process.
