Ladies, ladies! There’s enough of him to go around. Don’t forget (as you parade him around your dinner party) that you wanted protection. Your friends’ ooooohs and aaaaahs are great, but that doesn’t inspire confidence in his patroling abilities. Your guy may be “the one,” but we all know every alpha needs that special training that only you can provide. You can give him all your love, but let us give him that finely honed edge that helps him become both an officer and a gentleman. 804-944-8500 | dogtrainingelite.com/richmond

Introducing a new furry companion to the family is an exciting decision, but it also requires significant changes and adjustments to a new lifestyle. With the help of a professional like Paul Hearn from Dog Training Elite Richmond, the transition to dog ownership can be easier and more enjoyable. Midlothian Lifestyle got the opportunity to chat with Carol Straus, a Dog Training Elite client, who shared her experience working with Paul. Read on for Carol’s insights on Paul and Richmond’s most elite dog training service!
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT PAUL HEARN AT DOG TRAINING ELITE?
While conducting a Google search, I discovered Paul through numerous positive reviews. There are several dog trainers out there, but I wanted to use a reputable company with proven methods.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO HIRE A DOG TRAINER?
Having recently recovered from shoulder surgery, I wanted to teach my dog, Dunkin, how to stay with me on a normal leash and not pull.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE PAUL SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR DOG TRAINING NEEDS?
I chose Paul because of his thoughtful interactions with Dunkin and me. He quickly identified Dunkin’s strengths and weaknesses, provided me with easy-tofollow homework, and reinforced the desired behaviors with positive repetitions. I absolutely loved Paul’s method of positive praise and the “yes” that comes after every correct behavior.
DID PAUL MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS DURING THE TRAINING PROCESS? HOW SO?
Absolutely. I was concerned about Dunkin’s safety since we live on a large property with horses and frequent deliveries. I wanted to make sure that his “come” and “place” commands were well-practiced to avoid any accidents. Thanks to Paul, Dunkin has been exceptionally patient around the horses and has not chased after any cars or trucks!
As part of his training packages, Paul includes weekly group sessions, and those have been invaluable! It has been amazing to witness all the dogs transform with Paul’s guided instruction. We have a saying in the horse world: if you aren’t training your horse, you’re “un-training” it.
I feel the same way about dogs. Consistency and positive reinforcement are the best things, and I don’t think you’re ever done making your dog the best!
DID PAUL’S SERVICES HELP YOU FEEL LESS STRESSED DURING THE DOG TRAINING PROCESS?
Absolutely. Paul’s amicable personality, combined with his proficient knowledge, made everything seem effortless. He was very systematic and always told me what to expect and what to work on the whole way through.
WHAT SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT PAUL’S APPROACH TO DOG TRAINING?
I think there’s a standard fear and dislike of electronic collars because so many people use them punitively. Paul was very careful in selecting the right approach to e-collar training. Our ultimate goal was to gradually reduce the use of the e-collar. We hardly ever use it, but when we do, Dunkin understands that he needs a reminder and responds positively.
IF SOMEONE ASKED YOU ABOUT WORKING WITH PAUL, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM?
I absolutely recommend Paul! The results are life-changing. He showed me practical ways to deal with unwanted dog behaviors, and living with a well-behaved dog has been a pure joy. Yes, there’s work to get it done, but it is SO worth it!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD OR SHARE?
I don’t think I would enjoy my dog as much as I do without Paul’s training. It’s amazing to see how he has helped so many clients and their dogs during group classes. It’s not magic, and it takes dedication at home, but Paul is always there to guide you!
If you’re struggling with your dog’s behavior and want to address issues such as leash and potty training, destructive chewing and digging, staying and coming, or stealing objects, then Paul is the expert you need! He can also help you with problems like barking, howling, and whining; food guarding and begging; mouthing, nipping, and playing rough; anxiety; submissive urination, jumping up; hyperactivity; and aggression. With Paul’s support, you can work towards developing a happier and healthier relationship with your furry friend.

DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY.
After completing my college education, I began my career in 2002 as a salesperson at a local Ford dealership. It was an exciting time for me as I played a significant role in the emergence of online car sales. Within three months, I was promoted to the position of internet sales manager, and over the next decade, I held various roles, including business manager and preowned sales manager. My time at Ford was invaluable and helped shape me into the professional I am today.
After leaving Ford, I briefly worked at Nissan before joining Mercedes-Benz of Midlothian in December 2012. Since then, I have had an incredible journey with the company. I learned from many amazing mentors, including Ron West and Dave Mitchell, as I progressed to general sales manager in January 2016 and then general manager in January 2023. Despite facing enormous challenges over the years, such as the financial crisis and the pandemic, I believe these hurdles have taught me to be adaptable and well-prepared. I look forward to continuing to learn from an even larger support
system, as Mercedes-Benz of Midlothian is now part of the 26-store and growing Murgado Automotive Group.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN AUTOMOTIVE, AND WHEN DID YOU MAKE THAT DECISION?
I’ve been fascinated by cars since I was a kid. I used to collect Matchbox cars and Hot Wheels, while Lamborghini books and posters decorated my room. During my high school and college years, I enjoyed customizing Hondas, which eventually led me to take a leap of faith in pursuing a career in the automotive industry after graduating.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A GENERAL MANAGER AT MERCEDES-BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN?
I learned from some of the best in the business and saw how they took pride in caring for the employees who care for the customers. I have a strong desire to help the individuals that I work with grow and develop. Additionally, I am committed to my own personal growth and development.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE?
I lead by example, demonstrate empathy, and balance competition with compassion. My goal is to inspire my employees to reach their fullest potential.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL FOR A GENERAL MANAGER TO POSSESS?
Surround yourself with great people. I never want to be the smartest person in the room. Being a good teacher and an active listener, as well as learning from each other promotes growth.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING AT MERCEDES-BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN?
I love how our store is more relationship-based than simply transactional. The personal relationships developed between our clients and our staff are extremely important across the board. We value the repeat opportunities and our clients’ trust in us. The excitement when a customer takes delivery is contagious, whether it’s their first Benz or their fiftieth. We have an incredible brand and always strive to do business right.
HOW DO YOU STAND OUT COMPARED TO INDIVIDUALS IN COMPARABLE POSITIONS AT OTHER COMPANIES?
I try my best to care for the customers, clients, and employees. Helping and watching individuals grow both personally and professionally is very gratifying to me. I also have a strong network of talented managers with whom I share and discuss ideas.
WHEN YOU AREN’T RYAN PULLEY, GENERAL MANAGER AT MERCEDES, WHO ARE YOU?
I am a lucky husband to my wife Niki and a proud father to my daughter Kennedy (15) and my son Hudson (11). In addition to my wife and kids, my mom lives with us, which makes for a special experience for both her and her grandchildren. Ultimately, I am just a normal guy who works hard to take care of the people I love.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF WORK?
I enjoy traveling with my family and friends, sports cars, home theater, video games, pro hockey, European soccer, and watching great movies. I also love to practice Tae Kwon Do with my daughter and son, and as of today, we have all earned our red belts! And a half-sweet, half-unsweet tea with light ice from Chick-fil-A always hits the spot for me!
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A MANAGEABLE WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
The retail and customer service industry can be quite demanding when it comes to maintaining a work-life balance. With long hours and the need to stay connected to the store even when at home, it can become quite difficult. However, having a team of competent and skilled individuals in the right roles is crucial for success. It’s important to love what you do and work with a team with the same passion. Taking family vacations annually and relaxing with loved ones on Sundays are essential for maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION?
To always stay humble, be grateful, continue learning every day, and consistently strive for personal and professional growth.
I support my community by shopping locally and donating items to charities like Hope Thrift, Habitat for Humanity, Crater Community Hospice and Thrift, Toys for Tots, Christmas Mother, and Sheltering Arms. At Mercedes-Benz, we collaborate with the Richmond Tennis Association to support tournaments and the Rising Stars Program, which helps underprivileged youth learn tennis. We also participate in the McDonald’s MidAtlantic Clay Court Championships and contribute to various community events such as the American Cancer Society tournament, Cosby Classic Golf Tournament, and Massey Golf tournament. Additionally, we support VCU Athletics, James River High School, Robious Elementary, RISE Baseball, and the Robious Athletic Association. Even more, our commitment to the community extends to many organizations like Sheltering
Arms, an institution close to my heart due to my father’s deep involvement.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE THE READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all our clients for the opportunities they have given us. I am also truly grateful for our dedicated team members and their passion for delivering excellent customer service. Without our clients and our team, we would simply have a collection of exceptional cars in a beautiful facility. It is the people who make all the difference.
Ryan Pulley is a remarkable leader who represents the fine values and ideals of Mercedes-Benz. His devotion and dedication drive the success of the brand and set a high standard for competitors. Local Law Firm Celebrates its Founder Through Annual Blood Drive
ARTICLE BY JOANNA TANNENBAUM PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK DAVIS AND KATE THOMPSONThis year marked the tenth consecutive year that CowanGates has sponsored blood drives, many of which were co-sponsored with Village Bank and Salisbury Country Club, to honor its founder, Frank Cowan. This past February, CowanGates, Village Bank, and Salisbury Country Club reunited to host
“Frank is remembered for his infectious smile, firm, kind, loyal character, and passion for service. He treated people with respect, kindness, and intention. ”
their annual Memorial Blood Drive to spread awareness of the life-changing impact blood donations provide. With the American Red Cross facilitating the blood collection at Salisbury Country Club and the local community’s tremendous response, the blood drive was a great success. The day was truly special, full of warmth and generosity. Undoubtedly, Frank Cowan had a wonderful impact on his community, which is why he left such a lasting legacy.
Frank was a remarkable lawyer known for his honesty and excellent counseling and mediation skills. He built a successful law practice and collaborated with attorneys throughout the Commonwealth,
championing and advocating for his clients and numerous charitable organizations. Frank served as Board President of the Virginia/West Virginia Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society for many years, making it one of his most significant contributions. Frank was a proud Hokie and a devoted alum, fan, and booster of Virginia Tech. Above all, he was a friend to many and a loving father and grandfather. Frank is remembered for his infectious smile, firm, kind, loyal character, and passion for service. He treated people with respect, kindness, and intention. When you met with Frank, you felt valued and heard. You left feeling strong and trusted.
In October 2014, Frank received the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He survived for a considerable time, thanks to the many blood transfusions he received from the selfless donations of anonymous individuals. Without these contributions, Frank would have survived only a few weeks. The donations not only helped Frank fight AML, but they also allowed him to extend many happy moments with family and friends. Frank believed that the joy of life is found in its daily journey. While the end result was important, more important to Frank was the way he lived his life in helping others— with intention and to find joy throughout every day.
CowanGates recommends the American Red Cross for their efforts to make the blood donation process relaxed and seamless. The demand for donations is incredibly high, and the contribution from just one person can save up to three lives! Donations through the American Red Cross could greatly benefit individuals such as cancer patients, burn victims, and those with chronic illnesses. This simple act of kindness can give the gift of life to someone desperately needing blood donation. If you are interested in donating blood and saving lives, you can find the nearest blood drive by visiting redcrossblood.org
CowanGates is dedicated to securing justice and favorable results for its clients. Serving Richmond for over 40 years, the law firm’s experienced attorneys provide legal aid and advice regarding personal injury, civil and criminal litigation, estate law and planning, business and family law, and more. To learn more about how CowanGates can help you, please visit cowangates.com.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT01.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)

Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
