Cami Mathiason knew from an early age that she wanted to be a hairstylist. She loved their ability to make people feel beautiful and confident.
The Boise native grew up with self-employed parents, who helped inspire her to do the same.
“I wanted to be able to have a career that I could be a mom at the same time,” she said. “At 16, I fell in love with hair. Fast-forward 10 years, and I got into the hair extension side.”
Mathiason is the owner of MANE Styling Studio in Meridian, which primarily offers luxury hair extensions and color services.
Having worn hair extensions since she was 18, Mathiason said she came across her current method of offering them when she got a new set for her wedding in 2018.
“I had really short, thin hair. You just want beautiful, luscious hair for pictures and just to feel your best,” she said. “I had a local hairstylist introduce me to the Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) method. I found out the soonest training was the week after my wedding. So, instead of a honeymoon, we flew to Huntington Beach, California, and spent the week in training. … My love for the method showed. Six months later, I gave up the clientele I had and solely offered extensions.”
While Mathiason said one of her favorite parts of working with extensions is being able to create a dramatic result, something else offers her more satisfaction.
“That’s definitely helping women that have health issues or autoimmune diseases: people that have significantly lost their hair,” she said. “We’re seeing a lot of COVID hair loss right now. The ability to help them with hair extensions and hair replacement, ... being able to provide that confidence back, that’s the most gratifying part.”
Mathiason had a recent example of a nurse who had contracted COVID-19 four times and lost nearly all of her hair.
“We were able to put extensions in with the little hair that she had,” Mathiason said. “And she actually broke down into tears and was crying when we were finished just because she was so excited to have her normal hair look. She’ll have the hair extensions as she goes through the regrowth process. That happens a lot. We get a lot of tears in our chairs. It’s kind of great, especially being able to help somebody that goes through something that they just have no control over.”
Mathiason’s salon instituted an application process to make sure people were good candidates for extensions.
“It’s definitely a lifestyle,” she said. “We call them the ‘highest low maintenance type of service.’ Maintenance on extensions is about every 8 to 12 weeks. You come in, get them
taken out, and moved up. You want to make sure you can commit to taking care of them to protect your investment.”
Once a guest is approved, Mathiason said they take a deposit, schedule the first appointment, and then custom order the human hair used for the extensions. The hair and the extensions are custom colored to match seamlessly. Then, the extensions are attached.
“Our methods don’t use heat or glue,” Mathiason said of NBR and the Invisible Bead Extensions methods. “We use just beads and strings. You can create a foundation with the beads and the strings and then we attach the hair to that. It’s tied in.”
From there, the hair is styled, ‘after’ shots are taken to go with the ‘before’ photos, and guests are sent home with products and care instructions. All in all, that first appointment can take anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours. As for the cost?
“An average, brand-new install is roughly $1,200, but our prices can range from $500$3,900,” Mathiason said. “Hair extension services are personal to you and your needs. No guest is the same. From there, the tightening reservation every 8-12 weeks can be anywhere from $150 to $350, depending on coloring and how many rows we do.”
With MANE being an extension-focused salon, Mathiason said people travel from across the country to visit. The shop opened in February 2020, and is appointment only.
“I was training with NBR and training with salon owners from all over the country, and I saw a lot of different ways of running one,” Mathiason said about opening MANE. “I wanted to create an entirely different experience, focusing a lot more on the guests instead of just how many clients we can get in within a day. Idaho needed something different, and a salon that was niched in this service.”

the next, is where we meet Perry, Allie’s father, who started in the industry in the 1970s.
Allie has a double bachelor’s in Fashion Merchandising and Business, along with a foundation in diamonds from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). But her initial introduction to the jewelry world came from her father. Under her father’s wing she learned to appreciate the craft behind individual pieces, and has been apprenticing for 10 years. This combination of hands-on training and formal skills development inspired her to take over the family business.
Allie has always loved jewelry.
Her parents recall her emerging from her bedroom dressed in as much costume jewelry as she could find when she was a kid. This early passion proved a boon as Allie took on the family jewelry legacy, making her the fifth generation to do so.
Now after three years of planning and construction, Allie and her family have opened a new showroom in Meridian: Copper Canary Fine Jewelry Boutique.
“It’s been a long journey to open this showroom, but we’re proud to call the Treasure Valley home and bring Copper Canary to the community,” Allie said.
While Copper Canary is new to Meridian, Allie and her family are not new to the jewelry market.
The family business originated in Chicago in 1885 with Allie’s great-great-grandfather, Isaac, who offered services as a neighborhood jeweler. Through generations, with the knowledge and business passed down from one generation to
Her son is already showing an interest in gems and jewelry as well. According to Allie, Nash, 5, is on his way to becoming a sixth-generation jeweler.
“He was a great baby to have in the shop... wrapped around me napping while I helped our customers,” she said. “He is continuing his jewelry training with his ‘Papa’ [Perry], learning to use the microscope and jeweler’s loupe. [He’s] excellent at sorting gemstones by shades of color. In a few years, he will attend GIA’s GemKids camp.”
Copper Canary’s collections primarily consist of custom designs and antique pieces (which the family sources from across the United States and Europe). They also offer jewelry repair for modern and vintage pieces.
“I have experience working for larger brands and have seen firsthand that a name brand doesn’t always mean that you’re getting top quality,” Allie said. “At Copper Canary, we work with our in-house, veteran goldsmith and European partners to ensure that each piece has
SINCE 1885 THE KNOWLEDGE AND BUSINESS PASSED DOWN FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT
unmatched quality. When we find something that accentuates someone’s style and personal preferences, it is a really special moment.”
Allie often works with clients to craft new pieces from antique jewelry, like turning heirloom lingerie and bar pins into more wearable pieces, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
“Restoring, repairing, and reimagining antique jewelry is an elegant form of upcycling,” she said. “There’s no better way to honor a diamond than to pass it down for generations as a wearable and desired piece. There is an added layer of sentimentality when the piece is passed down from a prior generation and we can reimagine it to fit the style for the new owner.”
As a personal example, Allie mentioned that her own engagement ring uses the diamond that her father gifted to her mother, but is now reset into an original 1920s Art Deco setting.
Allie said she enjoys working with clients to craft custom pieces. One of her favorite projects was a bespoke creation.
“After my client’s mother had passed, she noticed that butterflies landed on her all the time,” she said. “We worked together and custom-designed a necklace with a diamond-studded, solid gold butterfly so she could always keep the memory of her mother close.”
Copper Canary’s new Meridian location blends Art Deco design with modern touches.
“As we had the opportunity to create the space from the bare bones of the building, I knew we wanted to design the showroom in a thoughtful way that would complement the jewelry inside,” Allie said. “[We] took great care to make sure that all elements within the building are elegant, eye-catching, and welcoming. There are a lot of decades that influenced the layout and design, and I think you can really feel that as you walk around the showroom.”
The store has a centerpiece bridal bar dedicated to engagement pieces. On display are collections of pieces spanning 250 years of jewelry eras, such as Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. Also featured is a custom locket bar, one of Allie’s favorite services, where customers can choose from an array of colorful gemstones to create a unique piece.
Among the antique and reimagined pieces, Copper Canary also carries accessories like handbags, wallets, and hats. The designs come from partners that ethically source their materials.
Visitors can also take advantage of the coffee bar and refreshments as they explore what Copper Canary has to offer.
To find out more about Copper Canary Fine Jewelry Boutique and the unique specialities that the family store offers, you can visit CopperCanaryBoutique.com , or visit the new location at 2590 N. Eagle Road, Meridian.

BY ASHLEY LOEB + PROVIDEDIn a world where practicality often overshadows creativity, Judith Balis stands as a shining example of someone who has never relinquished her passion for interior design. From a young age, her love for creative expression and transforming spaces was unmistakable. While other kids played outside, Judith could be found rearranging furniture or fashioning home decor from scraps and found objects. Raised in a single-parent household, she mastered the art of thrifting and upcycling long before it became a trend. To her, creating wasn’t just a hobby; it was an irresistible calling. As she neared college, Judith’s dreams of becoming an interior designer were postponed due to the lack of a suitable program in her hometown, Boise. Instead, she pursued a career in education, becoming a devoted special education teacher. Yet, her heart yearned for more, and she found solace in constantly redecorating her own space and helping friends and family with their homes. It wasn’t until someone pointed out that she should turn her passion into a career that she seriously considered making the leap.
Despite her limited formal experience, Judith’s determination led her to audition for an HGTV show, where she faced the daunting imposter syndrome head-on. Against all odds, she triumphed over another home designer, and her name began to gain recognition. The experience taught her invaluable lessons, propelling her growth as a designer beyond what any formal education could offer.
Judith’s success as a home designer isn’t solely attributed to talent and creativity; it’s her innate ability to connect with people that sets her apart. She believes being a designer is an intimate job, requiring a deep understanding of clients’ personalities, families, and lifestyles. Her advice to aspiring designers is to take psychology classes, emphasizing the importance of reading and understanding people to thrive in this profession.
In 2018, Judith opened her first storefront, Feather and Twine, to share her talent and passion with the Boise community. The response was overwhelming, with lines forming down the street on opening days. What made her store truly magical were the connections that blossomed between customers, who would meet up, catch up, and share their lives over a cup of coffee on the store’s sofa.
Judith enjoys time in her beautiful home, which features a beautiful blend of more contemporary but comfortable pieces and antique finds with her husband of twenty years, two grown daughters, and two dogs about which she fondly joked seem to rule the house.
Beyond being a one-stop-shop for home decor, Bungalow offers in-home design consultations, ensuring that clients truly transform their houses into homes that reflect their personalities and stories.
As the demand grew, Judith knew it was time for a bigger space to continue fostering those meaningful connections. Thus, in 2021, Bungalow Home Furnishings was born—a place that not only offers a wide range of home goods but also stimulates the senses. Stepping into Bungalow is like entering a warm, inviting cocoon that wraps visitors in an earthy, comforting scent, reminiscent of a cozy bungalow.
Beyond being a one-stop-shop for home decor, Bungalow offers in-home design consultations, ensuring that clients truly transform their houses into homes that reflect their personalities and stories. Judith’s own home exemplifies her design philosophy, with a blend of contemporary comfort and cherished antique finds.
Despite her undeniable success, Judith remains grounded and encourages others to pursue their dreams and passions. She believes in listening to one’s inner voice and paying attention to what truly feels right. For her, life is about finding beauty in the simplest things, reconnecting with the earth and soul, and creating a harmonious work-life balance.
With each new chapter, Judith’s journey continues to inspire and uplift those who cross her path. As she lovingly curates spaces that uplift the human spirit, she teaches us that a home is not merely a collection of
objects but a reflection of the soul that resides within. Through her intimate connections with clients, Judith proves that design is about more than aesthetics—it’s about understanding, empathy, and creating a sanctuary that nurtures the heart and mind.
So, the next time you find yourself wandering through the cozy aisles of Bungalow Home Furnishings , remember that behind every piece lies a tale of passion, perseverance, and the magic of human connection. From her early days, transforming furniture with soda cans, to winning over audiences on HGTV, and finally creating a haven for Boise residents at Bungalow, Judith Balis has woven her love for design into every thread of her life’s tapestry. Her journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, the courage to face challenges, and the joy of forging meaningful connections in the pursuit of creating spaces that bring happiness and inspiration to all who enter.
With a second home at Tamarack Resort, lifelong memories are just a few steps from your front door. No matter the season or the size of your family, there’s something for everyone: World-class skiing and mountain biking trails for thrill seekers. Tranquil lakes, a scenic golfing experience and views for those who like to take things a little slower. And a vibrant community that brings everyone together.
In downtown Meridian, a gallery stands as a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Bill Garibyan’s vision to showcase his oil paintings turned into a cultural beacon for the Treasure Valley community. The Idaho Art Gallery, since its opening in January 2022, has become a cherished space for local and regional artists to exhibit their masterpieces.
Bill’s love for art began young, nurtured by his accomplished artist father. However, after immigrating to the United States from Armenia, Bill focused on providing for his family, putting his artistic dreams on hold.
“I took any job I could get—I worked at a window factory… I learned how to build houses, anything I could do for my family,” Bill recalled.
Despite the challenges, Bill’s passion for art remained a spark. When life settled down, he rekindled his love for painting, drawing inspiration from Idaho’s diverse landscapes.
“Here we have mountains, rivers, lakes, fields, canyons... but most of all, I love the skies. Idaho has the most beautiful skies,” he remarked.
In 2019, Bill and his family moved to the Treasure Valley, which led to the creation of the Idaho Art Gallery. Managed by the Garibyan family, the gallery is open every Wednesday through Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
Nelli, the gallery director, is proud of her father’s artistic journey. “We have watched my dad embrace his love of art, and now to see how his technique has developed from those early days is very rewarding for our entire family.”
The Idaho Art Gallery comes alive with a diverse array of artwork. From oils on canvas depicting Idaho’s landscapes to sculptures crafted from stone and contemporary pieces, the gallery has become a coveted destination for artists and art enthusiasts alike.
Throughout the year, the gallery hosts a variety of events that bring the community together in celebration of art. Bill can often be found at the gallery, welcoming visitors and sharing stories about his captivating artwork.
“We want to be a place everyone can experience,” Bill expressed passionately. “Coming to the gallery is free for our visitors, and we want to continue to be a valuable community partner not only in Meridian but for the greater Treasure Valley.”
The Idaho Art Gallery, nestled at 211 E Pine Ave. Suite 108 in Meridian, offers a remarkable journey through the expressions of local talent. A visit to this cultural gem is an invitation to immerse oneself in the soulful beauty of art and to witness firsthand the transformative power of following one’s dreams.
To learn more about the Idaho Art Gallery and its events or to become a guest artist in 2024, visit LandscapePaintings.org Whether an art enthusiast or seeking a moment of inspiration, the Idaho Art Gallery welcomes all with open arms, inviting everyone to celebrate the vibrant spirit of creativity flourishing in the Treasure Valley.

INGREDIENTS
• 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin
• 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum
• 1/2oz- Lime juice
• Topped with ginger beer
• Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH
• Small paint brush
• Simple syrup
• Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).

I don’t use the word “awe” lightly. But I was more than a little awed when a giraffe’s massively long tongue grazed my hand as he took the chunk of romaine lettuce I was offering him.
Giving Tafari his evening snack was part of Zoo Boise’s Wine Safari. The seasonal event gives a small group access to unique animal encounters, cuisine, and, of course, wine from around the world.
My safari companion, Jeanna Vickery, joined me as we “traveled” across South America, Africa, and North America.
We arrived at Zoo Boise after hours on a toasty summer evening. After check-in, we headed over to one of the covered shelters for our first pours and food selections.
It was here we met Zoo Boise Director Gene Peacock, one of our main guides for the evening.
“What’s really neat about the Wine Safari is they’re so intimate,” Peacock said. “It’s fun to have that closer interaction with people. It’s intimate, it’s fun, it’s educational, and it helps our cause.”
Peacock said the Wine Safaris started in 2019.
“We have loads of kid stuff, but adults were asking for stuff too,” he said. “There was a demand for this, so we were glad to be able to start offering it. We’ve had visitors from other states and even other countries.”
Wine Safari is a bit unique among Zoo Boise events because of the close and relaxed access to the keepers. Peacock was a wealth of stories. With decades of experience and more than five years at Zoo Boise, he was able to provide insight and humor on daily zoo life.
For South America, we tried wines from Chilean wineries Rogue Vine and La Playa. Tasty morsels included a cheese-stuffed tomato and a variation on a deviled egg.
Then it was time to meet our first animal. Appropriately named for his blue-and-orange coloration, we were allowed the chance to pet Bronco, the bearded dragon.
His incredibly tiny scales felt strange as I dragged my fingertips across them, but the rescued animal seemed nonplussed by all the attention.
Off in Africa, Painted Wolf wines accompanied shrimp croquettes and samosas. We headed around the back of the giraffe enclosure while the zookeepers tempted Tafari out with some chilled lettuce. One by one, we climbed up a set of steps, handing over leaf after leaf to our new long-necked friend. Getting up close really gave me a sense of how huge these creatures are, and yet how gentle at the same time.
I’d classify this moment as my favorite part of the experience. It’s not every day that most people get to feed a giraffe!
While we didn’t open up her box, we did get to meet Pandora the crocodile. Peacock regaled us with the tale of how she burst from her crate when she was first brought to Zoo Boise.
Since it was North America, we tried some Idaho wines, along with a heart of palm skewer and an empanada.
Our visit ended with special enrichment for the African wild dogs: presents filled with food for them to tear open and enjoy. Asking our final questions and finishing our wine, we headed for the exit, stopping briefly to admire a southern ground hornbill showing off its evening meal and a snow leopard taking a roll in the long grass.
“The keepers were all lively, knowledgeable storytellers and shared their featured animals with great care,” Vickery said when I asked her about the experience. “Having the zoo mostly to ourselves, which was shady and comfortable even in summer, also enhanced the enjoyment.”
If you’re looking for a very unconventional wine tasting, Zoo Boise should be on your list.
