@MERIDIAN.LIFESTYLEPUBLISHER A Period

CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MERIDIAN |

September is also known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Not only are we bring ing you fashion that will help keep you informed of the latest styles; but we are also sharing interesting interior spaces and trendy hotspots around town. Styles are ever changing, and the fashion world continues to bring us fresh images from generations past or shares concepts of the future for us to enjoy. Each decade has its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades earlier, the originality connects us to the culture and music of those days. Therefore, bring on this fall in your best style, and we will see you all around town.

The eternal optimist I loved the ‘back-to-school time’ of September because it presented a kind of blank slate, hinting at promises. We ponder the person we wish to be. We might start a new job or step away from the conventional 9-to-5 routine. We refresh our clothings, or update home interiors. There’s a natural reinvention that happens yearly. It heightens the sense of ending of one period and the beginning of something new. What that something looks like, awaits our interpretation.

Are you looking to buy a home and have concerns about the cost of a home and the current rate environment? If so, an Adjustable Rate Mortgage may be right for you.

REVIEWING OPTIONS WITH YOUR PREFERRED LENDER IS A GREAT PLACE TO START WHEN CONSIDERING FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITIES AND GOALS FINANCIAL BUZZ | PROFESSIONAL SERVICES16

Is an Adjustable Rate Mortgage Right for You? A

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED? At some point, an ARM rate will adjust depending on the terms of the ARM loan chosen. There are many ARM options available, and understanding the program is critical to knowing how the loan payments and interest rate may change over time.

An Adjustable Rate Mortgage, commonly referred to as an ARM, is a loan in which the rate is variable for a portion of the loan period. In contrast, a fixed-rate mortgage has the same interest rate assigned for the life of the loan. An ARM will carry a lower rate for the initial period of the loan than a static fixedrate loan. This option may help a borrower qualify for a larger loan amount or a more expensive home.

"An Adjustable Rate Mortgage, commonly referred to as an ARM, is a loan in which the rate is variable for a portion of the loan period. In contrast, a fixed-rate mortgage has the same inter est rate assigned for the life of the loan."

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGE?

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF AN ARM? • Lower initial rate  • May increase buying power • Lower initial monthly payment HOW

In addition to a review with a lender, there are many great resources available for consumers to do their own research. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau has many financial resources that may benefit a consumer looking for education, including an in-depth section on Adjustable Rate Mortgages. These resources can be accessed by visiting ConsumerFinance.gov and search ing for Adjustable Rate Mortgages or ARM loans.

To review your financial opportunities and goals reach out to the Loan Professionals at First Federal Bank,  BankFirstFed.com

Knowing what factors can impact the interest rate is critical to understanding the changes that may occur in the future and the potential impact on future payments.

Reviewing all disclosures and thoroughly reviewing the terms of an ARM loan with your lender is crucial to mak ing the best decision.

What may seem like a good opportunity to get into a loan/home, may not be the best opportunity in the future if the rate environment changes and the adjust ment period isn’t favorable to long-term financial goals.

AN ARM PRODUCT?

Some things to consider may be, for example, if a consumer is looking to stay in a home for under five years, a 5/1 ARM or 7/6 ARM may be something to consider. In the first example, a 5/1 ARM, the initial portion of the loan would be in place for 5-years. The rates can then adjust according to the terms of the loan agreement every 1-year. A 7/6 ARM initial portion would be in place for 7-years, then the rate can be adjusted to the loan term every 6-months. If the goal of being in a home less than five-years is attained, the fluctuation of the rates after the introductory period would not be a concern; however, if the goal is not achieved, the fluctuating rate may cause budget con straints if the consumer is not prepared for a rate and payment increase.  DOES ONE BEST RESEARCH

Reviewing options with your preferred lender is a great place to start when considering financial oppor tunities and goals. Partnering with a lender who under stands the consumers’ financial situation is critical to long-term success.

LOCAL'S CHOICE | LIFE + CULTURE

The Parma Motor-Vu is open Friday through Sunday, mid-April into October every year. “It is worth the drive to come out for a date night or fun for the whole family. We have a full snack bar and a beautiful digital picture on our 60-foot screen.”

And so, unlike many things these days, the Motor Vu still has some of its original equipment. While one of Susan’s big gest challenges is maintaining the nearly 70-year-old build ing, the same 1953 Manley popcorn popper is still running like a dream. And still making the best popcorn around.

The moon rises slowly into the sky as the sun creeps behind the horizon, taking with it the heat of the day. A cool atmo sphere settles over the massive gravel lot, already filling with cars—couples laughing, children darting into the concession stand, running out with armfuls of popcorn and treats. The giant screen buzzes on and a hurried husssshhh falls over the crowd, each tuning their radio stations to the proper channel.

To learn more about Motor Vu and their upcoming show ings, visit them online at ParmaMotorVu.com . A special thanks to the contributing @kaderandrewsphotographers: |@pixiestarlet@mari.hoskins|@tincangoat

Susan Haaheim handles the growing concession line with the ease and demeanor of someone who has been doing this for a long time, and in fact, she has. “I was born and raised in Idaho and spent a lot of my childhood playing and working at the Drive-In,” Susan shares with us before the movie. We dug into our pile of snacks and settled into the back of my RAV4, with the backdoor swung open as wide as she would go. Just as we achieved the perfect viewing angle and maximum level of comfiness, the show had begun. Bundled in our blankets, surrounded by snacks, and sharing this evening with two dozen other couples and families—each doing the same: reaching for snacks and snuggling into blankies—was an experience far greater than any Friday movie on the couch. However, nearly seven decades ago, it wasn’t all snuggles and snacks for the Motor Vu. In 1953, Susan’s grandparents, Gladys Anderson and Bill Dobbs, transformed this once banal dirt lot into what is it today. They did this to combat their latest enemy: the television. Before the drive-in, the family were proud owners of a string of local theaters, alongside the Jewell family. Gladys and Bill were incredibly slighted by this new technology. The (at the time) brand new TV had everyone and their dog enamored. No one was going out to movies anymore. It was a struggle to compete with television, but with cre ative ingenuity, the family prevailed. And now, 69 years later, Susan looks forward to 2023 and celebrating their 70th anniversary. “There aren't many drive-ins left across the U.S. It is such a unique and nostalgic business. It’s so much fun to have patrons young and old come out to enjoy watch ing movies under the stars. As a child I took it for granted,” Susan says. “Now it is my legacy and my favorite subject.”

CHIROPRACTIC CARE CAN BOOST YOUR GAME

Chiropractic can keep your body in harmony and boost your game, but there are also things you can do yourself to improve it evenStretchingfurther. is key. Give yourself time to do some warm up stretch ing and light swings before your game. Get in some light stretches after each round to keep your muscles loose and lengthened.  Stay hydrated! Dehydration can set the stage for a strained muscle or similar injury. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after playing golf, especially if it is hot out side. If you walk the course when you play, avoid carrying your bag and pull it instead. Carrying a heavy golf bag over 18 holes can cause disc problems and irritate nerves.

The lower back can undergo increased stress with the torque of a standard golf swing 22

The quick, repetitive twisting motion required to swing a club puts your back and other muscle groups at risk every time you play. With prime golf season in full swing (pun intended!), we have some tips to help improve your golf game and keep your back safe from harm.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH YOU

Chiropractic treatment can put your body back into align ment, remove nerve compression, and improve blood flow to vital muscles. When you are free from pain and your mobility isn’t hindered, you can swing freely and focus on your game.

BALLOON EVENT THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHER’STHEEYE A Sky CONTINUED > 24

The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, a colorful family-friendly production kicking off on Wednesday, August 31st, is an espe cially magical experience from behind the lens. So, as a new Boise photographer, I was thrilled to learn about the event that has been around since 1991. After a pandemic-driven cancel lation in 2020 and family plans in 2021 that cut my experience short, my hopes are flying high for 2022. Capturing these colorful hot air balloons as they come to life through breaths of fire requires early rising. Once they reach the sky just after 7 a.m., the race is on to find the perfect angle to capture the balloons in all their glory. Popular viewing spots are along the Boise Train Depot and Shoreline Drive. From that location, the morning sun rises from behind the foothills, which provides a great angle to capture the balloons as they light up

All of this consideration and strategizing requires patience, because things never go as planned... but that’s also part of the fun. Chasing balloons is an unpredictable, but exciting venture, like trying to capture a butterfly before it flies away, or lands just out of sight. There’s always a new angle or perspective. Millions of photo-possibilities are all wrapped into one glorious 5-day event, including morning launches and a Friday evening glow. Wherever these balloons take me, I’m looking forward to the exhilarating chal lenge of capturing something new and seeing what our community of inspiring photographers will capture this year, too!

like lanterns and reflect off the water below at Ann Morrison Park. As the balloons move higher, I found it best to do the same. For nearby hikes with city views, the hills of the Military Reserve may be an ideal loca tion to capture the balloons hovering over the city before they land on roof tops, streets or even the front lawn of the Capital building!

Visit SpiritOfBoise.com for more information and thank you to our contributing photographers:

Another very important factor for capturing that ideal image is light. Such questions float through a pho tographer’s mind faster than the balloons. Where is the sun, where are the shadows? Once they rise above trees and buildings, clouds can still hide the sun or cast a shadow upon the balloon at the exact moment you snap a photo.

It’s easy to play favorites from behind the lens and focus on the most colorful or interesting of the bunch. I could easily dedicate a whole morning to following one balloon, while another day might be spent cap turing that wide-angle view of the city with its fanciful fliers. Every day is a chance to try again - to set off on a different path to land a few good shots before the balloons retreat back to the ground just an hour or two later. But before picking a location to set up, it’s probably best to make sure all the camera gear made it out of the house during those barely awake 5 a.m. departures. Decisions must be made about trans portation, too. Cars may be faster, but setting off on foot or by bike could be advantageous in some areas.

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL A JOURNEY OF WINE, DELICIOUS INDULGENCES AND LAKEFRONT ADVENTURES WORTH REPEATING SCENIC COEURBOISEBYWAYSTOD’ALENE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY LOEB WA Rd to Coeur d’Alene Waterbrook Winery Lake Coeur d’Alene 30

DAY TWO: WALLA WALLA

We continued our wine adventure in two of the many tasting rooms downtown. I was convinced Joanna Gaines had been the inspiration for the ambi ance at Seven Hills Winery. The  bright, airy space wel comed us with views into the only working historic wine making facility in Walla Walla.  Unknowingly saving the best for last, we finished at Bledsoe Winery, where floor to ceiling windows encased the main tasting room, opposite a beautiful curved wall of basket-woven wine barrel staves. I was so impressed with childhood friends and winemak ing geniuses Jeff Bledsoe and Josh McDaniels, that I became their newest wine club member! After a pleasant afternoon, we were spoiled with dinner at the Walla Walla Steak Co., located in a historic train depot and accessorized with a full-size train caboose. Inside, we found a warmly lit and inviting space with lofted ceilings, flavorful drinks, friendly service, and high-quality steaks.

DAY ONE: BOISE TO WALLA WALLA Before departing from Boise, we grabbed drinks while taking in the alluring aroma of fresh roasted beans at Alchemist Coffee. We cranked up Billy Joel tunes and hit the road through the foothills into Oregon. We mean dered along the Snake River, past trains, crop duster planes, and a lone elk just before reaching the ascent through Deadman’s Pass heading towards Washington. Our first stop was a town we’d regretted not spend ing more time in before. Home to less than 40,000 people and 120 wineries, Walla Walla, Washington embraces its history, and creates the perfect ambi ance for relaxing with a glass of vino or perusing the storefronts along Main Street. It feels like a living museum, with restored brick buildings and the 1902 Odd Fellows Temple, a sturdy stone structure which showcases the town’s diverse ethnic and cultural history through photographs. After gazing through these “Windows on the Past,” our gurgling stomachs soon led us across the street to enjoy a satisfying brunch at Bacon and Eggs, complete with a self-serve, multi-tiered hot sauce display.

DAY THREE: WALLA WALLA TO COEUR D’ALENE (CDA) We left Walla Walla with a stomach full of delicious food from Maple Counter Cafe, and a sincere fond ness for this little town with so much to offer. As we continued onward toward our final destination, fields of corn, wheat, and grape vines surrounded tiny his toric towns like Colfax (est. 1879).The anticipation of that first glimpse of Lake Coeur d’Alene started to rise. Country roads turned into interstate after pass ing a “Welcome to Idaho” sign and grain silos became logging factories surrounded by towering pines. Time slowed down as I finally reclined on the bal cony of our room overlooking the pine-surrounded lake at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. The sun soaked into Last year’s journey to the idyllic lake town of Coeur d’Alene began as a one-time trip to celebrate family birthdays that ended with a unanimous “Let’s do that again next year!” Those words came to fruition when we welcomed my husband’s parents back to begin our highly anticipated repeat trip.

At Reininger Winery, the first stop of a self-guided tour that we had carefully curated with reservations, fresh berry notes tickled our nose as our taste buds anticipated the crimson and velvety smooth wine, served in a glass designed specifically to enhance the aromatic flavors. This refined, but not stuffy establishment was the perfect relaxing atmosphere. Our experience was as much educational as it was a sensory experience, thanks to the knowledgeable and friendly wine steward.

with food offerings and views from an expansive waterfront patio and courtyard that would be the perfect place for sharing a laugh with friends over a tipsy round of Bocce Ball.  Ready for a quick rest and refresh, we checked in to the modernly appointed Courtyard Marriott before hitting up Red Monkey for their monkey-branded burger and island warrior tacos - a tasty way to end our feast of a day.

We then returned to the acclaimed Long Shadows winery, greeted by sprawling grapevine views, a tast ing room filled with brightly colored Chihuly glass, and luscious, internationally-inspired wine. Nearby, Waterbrook Winery had a more casual environment

Home to less than 40,000 people and 120 wineries, Walla Walla, Washington embraces its history, and creates the perfect ambiance for relaxing with a glass of vino or perusing the storefronts along Main Street.

After another fun afternoon of golf, we walked right into Fire Pizza, a recommended downtown joint with a wood-fired oven and a surprising, but incred ible s’mores charcuterie board, which my husband cleverly suggested we should have as an appetizer. We devoured the roasted marshmallow covered chocolate, fruits, crackers and homemade chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth. The wood-fired pizza was tasty as well, but we’re definitely hoping the s’mores special makes it on the permanent menu!

DAY 6: COEUR D’ALENE TO BOISE

along the lakeside trails of Tubb’s Hill, located conve niently next to the resort. For breakfast, we hit Jimmy’s Down the Street, a 1950’s diner. Our return visit wouldn’t have been complete without their ginormous, Guy Fieri approved caramel-covered pecan roll.

DAY 4: COEUR D’ALENE

After a delightful French toast breakfast, we were on our way to the ultimate golf experience on the world’s only floating green at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course. My ball may have wanted to go for a swim instead of seeking dry land on that glorious 14th hole, but taking the quick ferry ride to stand on this modern marvel was well worth it.

After a long, but beautiful day outside, we enjoyed the casual atmosphere at Capone’s Pub and Grill for dinner, a downtown spot fit for getting your bar-food fix. We ended our evening back at the resort, at Whisper’s Lounge, where we sipped espresso martinis and reminisced about our day from comfy seating on the fire-lit patio.

In addition to the knowledgeable and friendly sommeliers, the food we enjoyed at the restaurant later that evening was divine, and the service was as impeccable as the lakeside ambience was beautiful. A short elevator ride led me back to a luxurious suite we had no regrets splurging on, as it was completed with a fireplace and expansive lake view that we enjoyed while cozying beneath plush bedding.

On our last morning, rain shattered our plans to bike the scenic Hiawatha Trail. Fortunately, reserva tions for spa treatments at the resort awaited us as a back-up plan. We slipped into heated sandals and soft robes, and soaked up views of the water as we lounged next to a beautiful stone fireplace. With each warm ing stroke of the smooth basalt across my skin, I gave into relaxation and let the sorrows melt away… but not before adding hot stone massage to my mental list of activities to Refreshedrevisit.andpacked, we gathered for our last meal at the CDA Resort Dockside Restaurant, where they accommodated a special request for choco late-chip pancakes. We made one last stop at Coeur d’Alene Coffee to refill the unique glass jars we saved from last year. The lofty industrial space with a sub stantial fireplace and ample seating made me wish I could stay to enjoy sips of my delectable oat latte spiced with maple, cinnamon and fresh orange zest.  To complete the loop home, we took the Idaho 95, passing through the evergreens towards rolling hills, embellished with bright yellow canola blankets. My mouth was agape as we looked down over Lewiston, a city sprawled at the base of the foothills, where the Clearwater River and Snake River unite along the IdahoWashington border. River Rock Café in Riggins, ID pro vided comfort-food nourishment for the rest of the ride through the quaint towns of McCall and Cascade. my skin and the breeze kissed my cheeks. I watched couples stroll along the world’s longest floating boardwalk nestled around the private vessels while boats came and went across the glassy blue water.  The day could have easily passed like this, but I was looking forward to another unforgettable wine experience awaiting us at Beverly’s, which boasts the biggest wine selection in the Pacific Northwest. The sommelier led us down the circular wooden staircase on a small group tour of their cellars (complimentary to CDA Resort Guests and those with dining reserva tions) filled with 1400+ varietals from across the globe.

DAY 5: COEUR D’ALENE

We got a refreshing start to a golf day the next morning aboard the free boat shuttle that was cap tained by the same friendly, dry-witted ex-navy seal as the year before. You could tell it was his dream retire ment job and it uplifted me to see his sea-weathered, smiling face again.

Rising early, I took a refreshing hike through the pinescented forest dotted with a rainbow of wildflowers

As we continued onward toward our final destination, fields of corn, wheat, and grape vines surrounded tiny historic towns like Colfax (est. 1879).The anticipation of that first glimpse of Lake Coeur d’Alene started to rise.

While enjoying the beautiful scenery, I reminisced about the people who made this trip so memorable: the friendly golf caddy, knowledgeable sommeliers, accom modating wine stewards, amazing hotel customer ser vice, the waiter who made a dessert extra special, and one of my favorite moments, a celebration over drinks and sunset with the eloped newlyweds that we met during our dinner at Beverly’s. The time spent laughing, exploring, and making new memories with family was priceless, and connecting with new and familiar faces also added a special spark to a journey that is definitely worth

ENGAGEMENT

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLAKE SIMMONS + BAILEY ROSENTHAL

Engagement rings are one of the most common symbols of love known today. Their symbolism can be dated all the way back to 1000 B.C., where it is believed that ancient Egyptians were given rings to signify joining the royal family. Later, in 500 B.C., the traditional idea of an engagement ring came to be in ancient Rome, where it is said that a man would gift his wife an iron ring, often with keys attached to it, to symbolize ownership. A Roman would placed this iron ring on the fourth finger of his wife’s left hand, because it was believed that the vein in that finger was directly connected to the heart... thus sparking a tradition still used in most Western cultures today. RINGS OVER THE DECADES

It wasn’t until 1867, when diamonds were found in South Africa, that they became more accessible

The diamond engagement ring that we now know and love began in the late 1440’s when Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned a ring made of gold and a diamond for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. The creation of this ring influ enced those of higher social class and significant wealth to give diamond rings to their loved ones. For many centuries only those of high social class had access to diamonds. It wasn’t until 1867, when diamonds were found in South Africa, that they became more accessible. The De Beers Mining Company, founded in 1873, made diamonds avail able to more jewelers, which sparked the many designs and trends we see today.

The art deco style remained popular into the late 1920s, until the start of the Great Depression. During the Depression the blingy rings were reserved for the extremely wealthy, while most Americans opted for more cost-effective options. During the 1930s ring styles were simplified, and it became more common to see one small stone and soft designs in platinum bands. Settings also shifted from having multiple stones to a single stone setting with four prongs, called “frame corners,” to help highlight the brilliance of the smaller stones. 1930s

Up until the turn of the century, gold was the metal of choice for engagement rings. Platinum was introduced in the early 1900s by Cartier, which caused a surge in production of platinum rings backed with gold. The period from 1901-1910 was known as the Edwardian Era. The styles during this time were influenced by King Edward VII’s love and respect for fashion and beauty. Engagement ring designs during this time were marked by their dainty details that often mimicked the same patterns as the lace in clothing. Ring designs during this time centered around a large stone, often a diamond for those with wealth, and began to have a real differentiated look from cocktail rings. This Edwardian style engagement ring remained popular until the early 1920s.

The 1920s brought a new era of fashion and art, known today as art deco. Around this time diamond mining increased with De Beers’ expansion, and made diamonds more readily available to the public. When the art deco style emerged, it brought with it a combination of diamonds and angled lines centered around one large stone. Ascher cut diamonds were one of the most popular styles in the 1920s. Invented in 1902 by the Ascher family, the cut is similar to an emerald cut, but is wider set and features larger step facets to make the diamond appear larger and more brilliant. 1920s

1950s Simpler silhouettes became more popular throughout the 1960s, showcasing larger, brighter center stones. Solitaires with tapered baguettes and smaller side stones became very popular for their chic, modern look. In 1967 Frank Sinatra proposed to Mia Farrow with a 9-carat solitaire pear-shaped diamond, causing a rise in popularity of pear shaped diamonds throughout the late 1960s.

During World War II, platinum was reserved solely for military use, therefore yellow gold reemerged as the popular metal for engagement settings. In 1947 De Beers came out with a new marketing campaign with the now classic slogan “A Diamond is Forever,” causing a spike in diamond sales within the U.S. The round diamond became the front runner for the engagement ring centerpiece, however the soft lace and floral metal designs remained in favor into the late 1940s. Around this time, the cushion cut became a popular option from the mid to late 1940s. 1940s

1960s

The 1950s saw the reemergence of platinum engagement rings, as the metal once again became available. The public also began to take interest in Jacqueline Kennedy. Her engagement ring from John F. Kennedy had a huge influence on engagement ring trends, introducing both colored stones and emerald cuts into the industry. The fashion world took a particular interest in emerald cut diamonds and they quickly became all the rage in the mid to late 1950s. In 1956 celebrity Elizabeth Taylor’s third husband, Mike Todd, presented her with a 29.4 carat emerald cut engagement ring, reaffirming the popularity of this newest cut.

The 1980s was all about excess as dramatic fashion trends took center stage. In 1982 Princess Diana picked out a sapphire and diamond cluster ring, which caused a huge surge in colored stone engagement rings that still resonates with many today. Yellow gold with large round stones and intricate designs also remained extremely popular during this time.

1990s Yellow gold once again became the metal of choice in the 1970s. During the early 70s the popularity of channel set diamonds, or diamonds set in a specifically cut channel (rather than prongs) became extremely popular. Many of the engagement rings during this time consisted of elaborate channels set around one large center stone. As individuals began taking a more personalized approach to their rings, it also became more common for a bride and groom to design matching wedding sets.

1980s

1970s

Both yellow gold and cooler metals like platinum and white gold were popular during the 1990s. The marquise cut had a major moment in the late 90s, when Victoria Beckham revealed her ring from fiancé David Beckham. The popularity of the marquise cut remained into the early 2000s.

The early 2010s saw a surge in rose gold settings and diamond alternatives such as Morganite and Moissanite. Princess cut center stones with pave bands also became very popular during the 2010s as a classic elegant option. With the increased interest in rose gold settings, the 2010s also saw mis matched metal ring stacks, which remain popular today.

The new millennium brought a need for extra sparkle making the halo a very popular style in the 2000s. The halo styles of the 2000s often featured a platinum or white gold setting with a radiant or cushion cut diamond surrounded by a “halo” of pavé diamonds, which makes the center stone look larger, while also adding a little extra dose of bling.

Today, stackable bands paired with a simple solitaire seem to be all the rage. Mismatched metal rings including white gold, yellow gold, and platinum are paired together for gorgeous unique sets. The most popular shapes seem to be large, elongated oval and emerald cuts on simple solitaire bands. We are also seeing a surge in unique gemstones being added to simpler settings, like Ariana Grande’s oval shaped diamond set at an angle with a pearl placed alongside. These unique pairings are creating an era in which the saying “anything goes” stands true.

Over 25 years ago, in Sun Valley, Idaho, the local rec reation district wanted to put in a bike path to connect the towns of the Wood River Valley. They approached the local ranchers, including John and Diane Peavey and John Faulkner and family, to get their permission to put the bike path where they annually trailed their sheep. The ranchers all agreed with the understanding that the sheep would still be utilizing this pathway twice a year for trailing. Yet after the bike path was implemented and began use as public recreation, users started making complaints about the sheep droppings on “their” bike path.

This past January, in sunny San Diego, California, John and Diane Peavey, long-time Idaho Wool Grower’s Association members and advocates for the sheep industry, were presented the American Sheep Industry Association’s (ASI) Industry Innovation Award. The Industry Innovation Award is an annual award recog nizing the accomplishments of an individual or orga nization that improves the American sheep industry in a game-changing way. The Peavey’s were honored with this award for founding the annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Since its founding, they have been actively involved in the planning and integral to its growth and success 25 years later.

John and Diane saw this as an opportunity. They invited people to the local coffee shop to teach them about the history of the sheep industry in the Wood River Valley and the critical role they play. Later, they invited them to trail with the sheep to experience the industry first-hand. The following year, they replicated the program. It continued to grow until John, Diane, and other community members determined, “We have a fes tival here.” From there, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival was born, bringing sheep ranchers, community mem bers, and the general public together to learn about the history, culture, and importance of sheep.

BORN OUT OF A NEED

John Peavey is a third-generation sheep rancher, for mer state Senator and co-founder of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. John ran Flat Top Sheep Company for nearly 60 years, before passing it on to his son Tom, the current operator, who has since brought his son Cory into the family business. Diane Josephy Peavey, John’s wife, is a co-founder of the festival, a current member of the Advisory Council, and an author who provides an insider’s view of the joys, struggles, and adventures of life in rural Idaho.

There is an old Chinese proverb that states, “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.” The message behind the adage implies the long-term importance of education. It’s not just a place of rote attendance, but a society’s desire for a population that values dedication, disci pline, and lifelong learners. Here in Idaho, there’s a similar vein of thought when creating educational opportunities through philanthropic efforts.  Bank of Idaho  President Jeff Newgard’s vision of meeting Idaho’s educational needs prompted a unique opportunity under the mantle of sports, with the creation of a golf tourna ment aptly named, “Swing for the Green”.

Access to education and opening financial oppor tunities is a sentiment that Newgard himself feels incredibly passionate about. “I have a background that includes two years of community college. I learned that community college students are not always traditional students. Sometimes people are reentering student life. It’s great to talk with people who have already had careers and work experience.” Newgard’s experience rings true with statistics. The average age of a community college student is 28, with many identifying as full-time workers who are often enrolled in full-time studies. Community col leges can provide access that traditional schools lack, like opportunities for single-parents and classes that conform to full-time working schedules. With Idaho’s college-educated population among the lowest in the nation, the need for opening more opportunities is one that drives Newgard’s passion forward. Though the tournament has grown increasingly each year, he hasn’t forgotten the bigger picture. When he started Swing for the Green back in 2017, Newgard envisioned not just a community event, but one that could sow seeds of future opportunities as well as tap into the community with something fun andHowfruitful.didthe tournament get off and running? It took a bit of planning and finding the perfect part nership. Says Newgard, “We worked with a company out of Phoenix ( Backswing Events) that had three LPGA players. They helped us go around from group to group, to play with them. One player camped out at a hole, and it all just made for a really fun event. We had a dinner beforehand with an inspirational speaker. It was a great success that first year.”

CONTINUED > PC: BanBury 53| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MERIDIANSEPTEMBER 2022

The first event took place June 16 and 17, 2022, at the Idaho Falls Country Club, benefiting College of Eastern Idaho; followed by a Pocatello tournament on August 8, at  Riverside Golf Course , benefiting Idaho State University. A third event will take place in Treasure Valley on September 15 and 16, at the Banbury Golf Club, benefiting College of Western Idaho.

The tournament is really two-fold: proceeds and impact. The funds help potential students and provide opportunities for the LPGA players in the tournament. “The company (Backswing Events) is a woman-owned company that provides up and coming tournament players the ability to pay for their own entry fees and support their career as they try to get into the LPGA.”

Not only did this maiden venture raise around twelve-thousand dollars, it also ignited a certain excitement for building scholarship funds and involving the community with potential to grow. Like most things that become readily successful, there is always the need to look for ways to expand or improve. This was duly demonstrated by last year’s tournament netting fifty-thousand dollars, with year to date funding over $100,000 for College of Eastern Idaho students. The growing numbers indicate not only its imminent success, but also potential for expanding educational opportunities for stu dents  all over the state of Idaho. This includes students here in the Treasure Valley, notably at the  College of Western Idaho. Circling back to Newgard’s vision, expansion was always a part of that plan.

The 25-team tournament include variations tailored to their location, featuring LPGA professionals, a derby shootout, shop ping and customized player swag, a pre-tournament party, signa ture cocktails, live entertainment and auction.

Jeff Newgard: Over $100K for studentsStudents train in CWI’s surgical technology lab before they start clinical rotations throughout the country

Newgard further explains this vision, “We decided that we would expand into Pocatello and Boise. So this year (2022), we’re going to have a similar event to support Idaho State University students in Pocatello. In Boise we’ll be at Banbury to support the College of Western Idaho. We love community college because it provides access for education. It opens those doors.”
