While our readership consists of 64 percent female readers, June is dedicated to the other 36 percent: the gentlemen of the Treasure Valley. With six sons, our family has our fair share of testosterone and is pleased to bring you one of our favorite issues. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16, but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, baseball games, camping trips, fishing excursions and so much more. To gather information for this issue, we looked to the experts: the men of Treasure Valley, including this month's Inspired by Success featuring Pat Rainey, owner of Alpine Tree Service. We’ve also included info on my personal car, a 2015 Dodge Challenger.

GOOD TIMES
Meridian Canine Rescue Second Anniversary Meridian Canine Rescue (MCR) celebrated two years on April 6. In the morning, dog owners took advantage of a microchip and nail trim clinic. The celebration continued with a silent auction, vendors, games and a doggie bake sale. In the afternoon, K9 officer/MCR adoptee Huck demonstrated and the day was rounded out with a volunteer vs. adopters softball game.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace Ribbon Cutting Sleep in Heavenly Peace opened its doors to its new facility in Meridian at 1120 Taylor Ave., Suite 100. The staff from SHP Boise was on-site to meet and greet visitors, and food was catered at the event. SHP builds bunk beds for children in need. Volunteers welcome! SLIDING INTO
SUMMER
AT IDAHO SKI RESORTS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ROGER PHILLIPS THE CLEAR, COOL AIR, SEEMINGLY ENDLESS VIEWS AND LUSH GREEN SLOPES MAKE SKI AREAS AS ATTRACTIVE IN THE SUMMER AS THEY ARE WHEN SWATHED IN SNOW AND SKIERS CARVE GENTLE ARCS ACROSS THE MOUNTAIN. Summer has a different vibe. Long days mean you can slow down, relax and take things at a slower pace—unless you’re pointing the front tire of a mountain bike down a ribbon of dirt and careening through the trees at ski racer speeds. Not your thing? No problem. Take a scenic chairlift ride, go for a casual hike, catch a concert, have a beer, grab a burger or try many other activities ski resorts offer in the summer. The options may not be endless, but they’re pretty darn diverse. I’ve paid numerous summer visits to south/central Idaho’s big resorts— Bogus Basin, Brundage Mountain and Tamarack—and I can assure you they are worth a trip, and they don't lack things to do.
BOGUS BASIN After years of turning out the lights in the spring and hanging a “closed until winter” sign on the lodge door, Bogus came roaring back several years ago with a topflight summer program and a long list of activities. Its flagship “mountain coaster” is like a four-season bobsled run for those who don’t want to defy death, and there’s much more to do. You can mountain bike or hike on the trails, play a round of disc golf or do various other activities including summer tubing, climbing wall, trampoline and more. They also serve food and drinks on the patio. Bogus has done a really nice job of making things affordable and family-friendly for summer visitors.

Tamarack’s base village is getting an overhaul, but the resort will still host summer visitors.
TAMARACK Tamarack’s tales of woe are old, stale news. This resort has been successfully operating winter and summer for years now, and it’s seeing a resurgence in many things. This summer will be pivotal as work resumes on the main lodge, which will transform the base village for summer and winter activities. The summer activities will continue during construction, and Tamarack has some uniques ones, including Tamarack’s famous zip line tours and its marina that features rentals for SUPs, kayaks and motor-

TOP OF THE ROCK The fastest way to make it to the top in New York City is by
elevator. From the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, found on the 70th floor, you can take in unparalleled views of the beau-
tiful Manhattan skyline including the Empire State Building, Central Park and other notable landmarks. These views are one of the best sights in the city. Upon arrival at Rockefeller Plaza, you will go through a secu-
rity check; watch a short documentary; and travel to the top in the Sky Shuttle, an elevator that takes you up 850 feet in less than a minute. It was one of the best parts of the experience. Then you have as much time as you’d like to explore the different observation decks. Consider buying your tickets ahead of time to avoid long

HARBOR CRUISE After a day of exploring the city, the per-
fect way to end the evening is with a sunset harbor cruise. Highlights for most harbor cruises include the Financial District, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and gorgeous views of the city skyline. The bonus of a sunset tour is that you get the see the city in both the daylight and after sunset. The shimmering city lights are beautiful at night. There are numerous companies that
offer tours. We booked our sunset tour with Classic Harbor Line and had a wonderful time relaxing as the sun went down. The group size was small, and we enjoyed our time on their elegant yacht.Â

BROOKLYN & DUMBO
When planning a trip to New York City, make sure you leave some time to explore Brooklyn. It is one of hippest neighborhoods in NYC, yet it still maintains beautiful historical districts, lined with cobblestone streets, beautiful views of downtown Manhattan and plenty of iconic stops. The American manufacturing buildings have been transformed into luxury condos, unique restaurants and pioneering art spaces. Start your time in Brooklyn at the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. You will have unparalleled views of the city and walk across one of the most famous bridges in the United States. After arriving in Brooklyn, take a spin on Jane’s Carousel and explore the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Next, head over to the corner of Washington and Front Street for one of the most iconic photo spots in DUMBO. You’ll have a fantastic view of the Manhattan Bridge with the Empire State Building in the distance. From there, head to Grimaldi’s for one of the best pizza pies, explore the artsy boutiques and wander the streets. 22

A CITY GUIDE FOR EVERY GUY
If you’re traveling to Lower Manhattan via the subway, you’ll more than likely go through the Oculus, a transportation hub, by
default. If not, take some time to go inside
and marvel at the 800,000-square-foot
building, rebuilt after the attacks on 9/11. The sleek and modern design along with the shops inside are well worth a visit.
Next, make your way to the 9/11 Memorial. The memorial honors those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Feb. 26, 1993,
and Sept. 11, 2001. There are two beautiful memorial pools surrounded by the names of the victims. Staring into the memorial pools
is a humbling and moving experience that will be one of the most meaningful parts
of your visit to New York City. Despite the hustle and bustle of downtown Manhattan, the memorial is a beautiful tribute and a very peaceful place.
“Visiting the memorial and museum was a very humbling and moving experience during our visit to New York City,” says Coltin Steele, contributor at CSGinger.
com. “I remember exactly where I was when
I heard about the terrorist attack, and visiting the place where it happened was a surreal experience. In that moment, I felt extremely proud to be an American and grateful for those who defend our freedoms.” Next, make your way to the National September 11 Memorial Museum. The museum tells the story of 9/11 through a variety of exhibits ranging from artifacts to multimedia displays. The museum also commemorates the lives of everyone who was lost in the terrorist attacks, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about their lives. Take a break from your busy life, and wherever your destination, take your family and enjoy the experience. You will be glad you did. FOR A FATHER’S DAY OUTING THE GUYS ARE SURE TO ENJOY, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE NAMPA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. Take Dad for a Saturday brunch at The Tower Grill Breakfast and Burgers, 105 Municipal Drive. Patio seating is available where you can sit and watch planes take off on the adjacent runway. After you have eaten some delicious diner food, head next door to the Warhawk Museum, 201 Municipal Drive, and stay the afternoon until the museum closes. The Warhawk Air Museum is filled with an impressive collection of aircraft, automobiles, uniforms, firearms and paraphernalia from World War I, World War II, the Homefront, the Cold War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Veterans are on hand to answer questions about the planes and choppers they flew or to simply shoot the breeze. Songs such as The Andrews Sisters’ "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" float from old-time upright radios and lend atmosphere to the brightly lit hangars. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Allow at least an hour to walk through the collection; enthusiasts will need two hours. A visit to Nampa’s Municipal Airport area is a great Father’s Day outing Dads will remember for years to come.

EVEN BEFORE I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE, I’VE ALWAYS LOVED PONY CARS: PONTIAC FIREBIRDS, FORD MUSTANGS AND PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAS, TO NAME A FEW. In 2009, Dodge released its third-generation Challenger based on the 1970 design, and I found my new dream car. In 2015, the Challenger experienced a new facelift which incorporated a circa 1971-style grill/split tail lights, and I couldn’t wait any longer. I purchased my new 2015 Dodge Challenger in “B5” blue, and I’ve never looked back. Some hidden gems the Challenger offers are the open hood intakes and true dual exhaust system. The Super Track Pak lowers the suspension by 0.5 inches and adds Bilstein shock absorbers, high-performance brakes and specially tuned suspension. Every day I have the deep enjoyment of driving my dream car, and that has made all the difference in my life. But mostly, it’s just fun to drive!

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS?
+ OUTDOORSY
continuing to try to be the best you can be and always
+ DEPENDABLE + OWNER, ALPINE TREE SERVICE
Always giving 100 percent to whatever it is you do, leaving something better than you found it. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? Starting my day early, taking care of the major and pressing issues early in the day, being flexible, having situational awareness, being goal-oriented and always allowing time for the people I care about and the things that bring me joy—even if it is only five minutes a day that I take for myself to decompress. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF? First and foremost would be my daughter. Being a father has been my No. 1 accomplishment. Getting to work with my daughter has been such a wonderful learning opportunity for both of us, and it has been a great bonding experience. I am also very proud, of course, of Alpine Tree Service. Over the past decade, we have grown so much, not just as far as expansions, but the advancements and progress we have made in our efficiency and the depth of knowledge we have gained has been astounding. Getting to watch the team grow, learn, sharpen their skills and continually work on being the best at what they do gives me a lot to be proud of every day. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS? Continue to work hard even in the face of struggle. The road to being successful will always be difficult, and it will oftentimes be slow. Being your own boss and owning a business is rarely the “easy” route, but it is so rewarding to be able to work toward building something.
