Experience superlative Northwest living in this sophisticated and joyous Mercer Island waterfront home.
Delight in unobstructed stunning Mt. Rainier views from the private dock and airy and light five-bedroom, five-bath residence. This classic Cape Cod stunner offers soaring ceilings, hickory hardwood flooring throughout, a chef’s kitchen and three fireplaces. An unusually large, flat lawn and multiple entertaining decks invite seamless indoor-outdoor living for all to enjoy along with 69 feet of rare, low-bank shoreline, and a covered boat slip. Located in a sought-after enclave near the Mercer Island Beach Club, this home is both a private retreat and an entertainer’s dream.
An older home with serious aesthetic deficiencies, situated on an exclusive south-facing lakefront, was ready to be revivified. Extensive remodels present many challenges... overcoming them together made the final outcome so much more rewarding.
There’s something uniquely joyful about August on Mercer Island. It’s the sweet spot of summer— sunny days filled with popsicles, park adventures, late bedtimes, and that final stretch of freedom before the first school bell rings. And for so many of us, our memories are made even more special by the kids and pets that share our days.
This month, we celebrate the curious, creative, cuddly, and chaotic spirits that keep our homes lively and our hearts full. From island pups perched patiently at pet-friendly patios to mini shoppers mastering the Farmers Market with their own mini carts, this issue is brimming with the charm of childhood and the comfort of four-legged companionship.
Inside, you’ll find local stories that highlight the families who make Mercer Island such a special place to grow up (and grow old). We meet spirited high schoolers, Kirin and Brody, captured through the lens of MIHS alum Jim Garner as we look ahead to the first day of school for MISD on August 27. We explore the island’s best spots to dine with your dog, including a new patio at The Crawlspace Gastropub.
Our August issue is also a gentle reminder to slow down and savor the season. Take that extra walk with your pup. Let the kids linger in the sprinkler just a little longer. Catch the golden hour on the dock. And know that the most meaningful moments often happen when we’re simply together—furry friends included.
As always, thank you for reading, supporting local and being in community with us.
Cheers,

Every Sunday through September 28, 2025, the Mercer Island Farmers Market showcases local produce, arts, community organizations and live music at Mercerdale Park— from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—with all the charm market shoppers love, plus some game-changing upgrades aimed at families, foodies, and fan favorites.
One of the market’s most delightful additions this season is the introduction of mini shopping carts for small children. These pint-sized carts empower kids to join in the grocery-fun while building independence and responsibility—and make for some absolutely Instagrammable moments! A smart solution to keep little ones engaged and reduce backseat meltdowns: kids can help pick out strawberries or herbs in their very own carts, making every visit a family adventure.
2025 marks the market’s busiest lineup yet: organizers have secured 65–75 vendors, a significant increase from years past . The expanded vendor roster promises a thriving mix of staples and surprises:
• Local farmers bringing fresh-picked produce by the bushel – cherries, greens, berries, and more.
• Artisanal food booths featuring fresh salsa, gourmet coffee trailers, and the new baked-potato food truck.
• Specialty services like knife-sharpening stations and master gardener consultations.
• A brand-new Youth Vendor Program—empowering King County teens to launch their own small businesses.
• Continued support via the Market Bucks initiative to aid shoppers facing food insecurity. This expanded variety ensures both longtime regulars and first-time visitors find something fresh to explore (or taste!) every week.
Live music has always been part of the market’s DNA, and this year the program is richer than ever. From opening-day performances by the Mercer Island High School Pep Band to weekly sets spanning folk, swing, blues, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, and more, the stage is alive with talent. Whether you’re enjoying a morning coffee or picnicking on the grass, the melodies enhance the market’s vibrant, communal mood.
Another unsung highlight of 2025 lies behind the scenes: the market’s email communication has received stellar feedback. Weekly updates now arrive in inboxes with polished vendor spotlights, music schedules, weather heads-up, volunteer
calls, and thoughtful tips (from parking advice to where to find the mini carts). The revamped format—clean design, clear sections, links to relevant sites—makes the newsletter as enjoyable as it is informative. That thoughtful outreach has fostered stronger engagement, boosting attendance and volunteer interest alike.
Taken together, these enhancements reflect the market’s ongoing evolution from a summertime farmers’ stall into a vibrant community centerpiece. Here’s how each improvement enhances the overall experience:
1. Kid-friendly carts—engage young shoppers, support families, and build early food-literacy habits.
2. Expanded vendor lineup—bolsters local producers, enriches diversity of goods, and stimulates entrepreneurial spirit (especially among youth).
3. Live music—creates a festive atmosphere that keeps shoppers lingering and mingling.
4. Top-tier communication—ensures smoother visits and fosters community connection.
On June 1, the season kicks off with a bang: the Mercer Island High School Pep Band starts the fun at 9:45 a.m. From then on, expect weekly live music, bustling booths, and happy families rolling through with mini carts in hand. Don’t forget the special fall events—the Farmers-Only Pop-Up Market on October 12 and the Harvest Market on November 23—to cap the season with even more local flavor .
The 2025 Mercer Island Farmers Market is more than just a place to buy produce—it’s a destination for community-style living, where families, neighbors, vendors, and students converge in a celebration of food, music, creativity, and human connection.
Bullish on its future, the market continues to embody its mission: connecting growers, consumers, and the Island business community to create a valuable, sustainable community asset. These enhancements aren’t just upgrades—they’re a promise to keep the market welcoming, dynamic, and inclusive.
ARTICLE BY CHRIS ISHII PHOTOGRAPHY BY THERAPY LAB
When a child starts melting down at preschool, refuses to go to school, or explodes into tears in the cereal aisle, parents are often left wondering: Is this just a phase, or something more?
Dr. Chandler Chang, clinical psychologist and founder of Therapy Lab, hears this question often—and believes that families don’t need to wait for a crisis to ask for help.
“Usually it’s one of two things,” she says. “There’s a real problem—maybe the child won’t go to school, is showing signs of ADHD or OCD—or, on the other hand, there’s really not a problem, but parents feel like they should get their child into therapy because everyone around them is doing it.”
But for Dr. Chang, the most meaningful reason to seek therapy isn’t to fix a problem—it’s to build a foundation.
“I really like the inverse of the ‘problem’ model,” she explains. “Instead of asking what’s wrong with your child, ask: What are the skills they’ll need to build a business, be an amazing adult, have their own family one day? Things like self-understanding, decision-making—knowing who they are.”
For Dr. Chang, few moments are as telling—or as full of potential—as a full-blown tantrum in the grocery store.
“I love to see kids throwing a temper tantrum at the grocery store,” she says with a smile. “And most importantly, I love to see the parents who ignore it—because when your child is throwing a temper tantrum and you’re ignoring it, you’re teaching them that that’s not how you get ahead. You just keep going—maybe give them a look of understanding or a gentle shoulder squeeze to acknowledge their frustration, but then move right along - you put the groceries on the checkout, you pay your bill, and you walk out.”
Rather than avoiding these scenes, she believes they’re vital learning opportunities—for both child and parent.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed this,” she adds, “but kids don’t go to the grocery store anymore. Parents have figured out it’s difficult. But it’s such an opportunity to teach patience, and what to do when someone says no. These are real learning experiences.”
At Therapy Lab, therapy isn’t endless or aimless. Instead, families are guided through structured, short-term care plans—typically around 12 weeks—tailored to the child’s age and challenges. Sessions may include role play, storytelling, games, or emotion charts to help kids identify, express, and regulate their feelings.
BEDTIME BATTLES
OPPORTUNITY: REGULATING ROUTINE, SLEEP HYGIENE, AND NIGHTTIME EMOTIONS
“ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE ASK ABOUT IS SLEEP— BECAUSE KIDS WHO AREN’T SLEEPING PROPERLY GO OFF THE RAILS.” A CONSISTENT BEDTIME ROUTINE SUPPORTS NOT ONLY REST, BUT SELF-SOOTHING, COOPERATION, AND DAILY RHYTHM.
“We’re not trying to fix kids,” Dr. Chang says. “We’re helping them name what they’re feeling, calm themselves down, and communicate more clearly. It’s emotional education.”
Sometimes families reach out not because they planned to—but because they’re suddenly in crisis.
“So let’s say we get a frantic phone call and it’s, you know, 11 a.m. on a Tuesday,” Dr. Chang recalls.
“It’s a mom who has a busy career, or a dad, or any kind of family, and they say, ‘Oh no, the preschool just called. Our kid can’t go back until we’ve got his behavior under control.’”
She emphasizes: this really happens. And when it does, Therapy Lab responds quickly.
“That’s one reason why we don’t see people forever,” she says. “We like to get people in right away. We book you a session the next day. You’re not on a waitlist—we start with a one-hour intake conversation.”
From there, the process is both gentle and strategic. Dr. Chang and her team begin with basics—like sleep and nutrition—before guiding families into what’s called a functional analysis.
“We ask: when is your child acting the way you want him to? When is his behavior totally out of control?” she explains. “We’re like Sherlock Holmes. We find the precise moment things are breaking down and help parents fortify that moment so they know what to do.”
Whether the issue is bedtime chaos, emotional outbursts, or preschool dismissal, the goal is to give families clarity—and a plan.
Parents are a critical part of the process. They’re given language, tools, and insights that help make everyday life calmer and more connected.
“Therapy is most effective when it doesn’t stop at the office door,” Dr. Chang says. “It works best when families carry it into their routines.”
Today’s kids are navigating a world that’s moving faster, expecting more, and offering fewer chances to slow down and reflect. Therapy isn’t just a safety net— it’s a skill-building environment. One where kids learn how to listen to themselves, regulate their emotions, and grow into the people they’re meant to become.
“Therapy is absolutely a way to get to know yourself,” Dr. Chang says. “And that’s a skill kids can carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
Where Community, Recreation and Family Thrive Since 1953
1. A FOUNDATION BUILT ON FAMILY AND RECREATION
Nestled on the scenic shores of Lake Washington, Mercerwood Shore Club has been a cornerstone of community life on Mercer Island for generations. Built on a foundation of family and recreation, the Club offers year-round opportunities for connection and fun—from social gatherings and beach days to swim meets and tennis matches.
2. COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN AQUATICS
The Club’s spectacular waterfront setting provides a stunning backdrop for its renowned aquatics program, offering members a wide range of ways to enjoy the water. From swimming and diving to lounging poolside with snacks from the seasonal snack bar, there’s something for everyone. The aquatics offerings go beyond traditional lap swimming to include Aqua Zumba, water polo, masters swimming, a relaxing hot tub, and a kiddie pool.
3. FITNESS PROGRAMS
Tennis and pickleball courts invite friendly competition, and the state-of-the-art fitness center overlooking the pool and the lake provides modern amenities for all levels of workout enthusiasts. In the summer, youth programs— from aquatics to tennis to Kids Camp—bring energy and joy to the Club grounds.
As the needs of its members evolved, so did Mercerwood Shore Club. In 2015, the club undertook a significant renovation, demolishing the original clubhouse to make way for a modern facility that better served its community.
The modern clubhouse serves as the social heart of the community, hosting events, classes, and celebrations for adults, families, and youth throughout the year. Whether it’s a holiday parties, fitness challenge, or family movie night, there’s always something happening at Mercerwood.
Mercerwood Shore Club recently upgraded its waterfront with brand-new docks and expanded boat moorage, enhancing the overall lake access experience. These improvements not only boost convenience and aesthetics but also reflect the Club’s commitment to sustainability. The grated decking design reduces harsh shadows over the water, aiding fish health, and updated boat ramp materials help protect the lakebed
Today, Mercerwood Shore Club remains a testament to the enduring values of connection, wellness, and tradition. With membership capped at 375 families, it fosters a close-knit community where everyone knows your name— and your favorite swim lane. Whether you’re looking to make new friends, stay active, or create memories with your family, Mercerwood Shore Club is where it all comes together.

TIPS EVERY PET OWNER SHOULD KNOW
ARTICLE BY DR. BLANCHETTE MEDICAL DIRECTOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISLAND ANIMAL HOSPITAL
Be Familiar with Emergency Vet Clinics
“
Being prepared can make all the difference in keeping your furry companions safe and healthy.
As pet owners, we cherish our furry companions and do everything we can to keep them safe and healthy. However, emergencies can happen when we least expect them.
One of the most important aspects of emergency preparedness for pets is knowing where to go in case of an emergency. At Island Animal Hospital, we are always available for emergency appointments during normal business hours, however, disaster may strike anytime, so familiarize yourself with the location and contact information for 24/7 emergency veterinary clinics.
CREATE
Just like humans, pets need their own emergency kit stocked with essential supplies. Your kit should include:
• Food and water: Pack at least three days’ worth of pet food and bottled water for each pet. • Medications: Include any medications your pet may need, along with instructions for administering them.
• First aid supplies: Include items such as gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for treating minor injuries.
• Leashes, collars, and carriers: Have sturdy leashes, collars with ID tags, and carriers or crates for safely transporting your pets.
• Comfort items: Include familiar items such as blankets, toys, and treats to help keep your pets calm during stressful situations.
• Important documents: Keep copies of your pet’s medical records, vaccination history, and identification information in waterproof bags. Check your emergency kit at least once every six months to ensure food, medication, and first aid supplies are not expired.
Natural disasters, such as wildfires and earthquakes, or even house fires, can strike without warning, leaving you and your pets vulnerable. In these situations, it’s important to remember that your pet has a better natural, survival instinct than you do. Oftentimes, letting your pet loose to find their own safety is the best move. That’s why it’s absolutely crucial to have an ID collar and to microchip your pet so you can be reunited in that case. In this event, indoor only pets may end up outside and exposed to diseases that they will need to have antibodies against, this is why we recommend vaccinations for all pets, even those that aren’t supposed to travel outside. If you do stay together in an emergency, take your pet emergency kit.
Summer brings its own set of potential injuries for pets. Here are some tips for handling common summer-related emergencies:
• Heatstroke: Know the signs of heatstroke in pets, such as excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area, offer water to drink, and apply cool towels to their body. Seek immediate veterinary care.
• Dehydration: Ensure your pets have access to fresh, clean water at all times, especially during hot weather. If you notice signs of dehydration, such as dry gums, lethargy, or sunken eyes, encourage your pet to drink water and seek veterinary attention if the issue persists.
• Injuries from outdoor activities: Whether it’s a cut paw from running on rough terrain or a bee sting from exploring the garden, pets can easily injure themselves during summer activities. Keep a close eye on your pets when they’re outdoors and be prepared to provide first aid or seek veterinary care if necessary.

KIDS AND POPSICLES ARE THE PERFECT SUMMERTIME PAIR
As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kid-friendly activity.

• 2 quarts Concord grape juice
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 12 whole cloves
• 4 cinnamon sticks
• 3 tablespoons whole allspice
