The ROI of Life: Investing in Returns Beyond the Dollar

Dear Readers,

Welcome to this month’s issue—a special edition dedicated to the art of investing. As Sharon and I sat down to plan our content, we realized that on Mercer Island, investing isn’t just about the financial gains; it’s about nurturing our families, communities, and futures. We say, "returns are not always financial!"

We’re excited to share a vibrant mix of features that celebrate returns in every form. This is our high est page count in our history and we encourage you to pay extra special attention to our advertising partners. Without them, we would not be in print and the community loses a valuable asset. They are the “investors” that make Mercer Island City Lifestyle possible!

For those who appreciate the finer things in life, Mark Harrington’s “Uncorking Returns” explores the myriad ways wine enriches our lives—proving that pleasure and prosperity often come in the same bottle. And when it comes to safeguarding our legacies, Matt Tabler of Pinnacle Private Wealth Advisors offers insights in “Managing Generational Wealth,” guiding us to secure not just our finances, but our family’s dreams for the future.

Time, too, is a priceless asset. Our Travel Advisor, Brenda El-Ghazzawy from Let’s Go Luxxe Travel, reminds us that “Investing in Time Together” can create memories that last a lifetime. Meanwhile, our feature “Investing in SUMMthing Special” with Tracy Drinkwater invites us to see the beauty and logic in everyday moments—yes, even math has its magic!

“We also want to introduce curated content from City Lifestyle. We hope you find “Eat Kind”, a simple roasted salmon with dill coconut cream recipe, “Invest in Your Greens”, and “Family Time is the Best Investment” to be as valuable as our MI content.

And just when you thought the journey couldn’t get any more delightful, we’ve stirred up another cocktail for you: the Butterfly from Northwest Spirits—a playful reminder that sometimes, the best investments are those that bring a little extra sparkle into our lives.

Finally, this issue is a heartfelt tribute to Teacher Judy Witmer, whose lifelong dedication has touched hundreds of Islanders—educators, parents, and students alike. Her unwavering commitment reminds us that the truest investments often yield returns of inspiration, guidance, and love.

Thank you for being a part of our community. We hope this issue inspires you to invest not only in your financial future, but in every meaningful aspect of your life. Here’s to nurturing growth, celebrating returns of all kinds, and cherishing the journey together.

Warmly,

CHRIS ISHII AND SHARON PEREZ

In loving memory of “Teacher Judy” Witmer, who touched the lives of thousands of Islanderseducators, parents and students.

MERCER ISLAND VOICES

With profound love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Teacher Judy Witmer—a remarkable educator, mentor, and friend whose impact on generations of children, parents, and educators will be felt for years to come. Judy’s warmth, wisdom, and boundless enthusiasm for learning created communities of curiosity, kindness, and joy. Judy’s passion for education shaped her extraordinary 53-year teaching career. For 48 years, she served as both a Parent Education Instructor and a classroom teacher of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds at Mercer Island Learning Lab. There, she nurtured the learning of not only young children but also the educators and parents who supported them. She lovingly shared her wisdom and spirit, so much so that in some cases, her former students returned years later with children of their own, continuing the tradition of learning within the same walls. One dedicated group of parents even dubbed themselves “Judy’s Forever,” a testament to the lasting bonds she built.

Teacher Judy

Judy’s deep commitment to early childhood education was rooted in her own lifelong love of learning. As a young child, she lived “on the lawn” at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where her father was a professor. Her high school years were spent in Madison, Wisconsin, attending a laboratory school dedicated to the improvement of teaching methods on the University of Wisconsin campus.

For college, Judy attend the University of Colorado, earning a degree in Education. As a freshman, she met her future husband, Daniel Witmer, and after graduating, they embarked on a new adventure together, moving to Bellevue, Washington. Judy began her teaching career at Georgetown Elementary in Seattle. It was there that she first developed a passion for supporting the readiness of 4-, 5-, and 6-year-olds for

the classroom, along with a deep interest in at-home, parent-led learning to nurture children’s natural zest for discovery.

After five years of teaching, Judy and Dan moved to Mercer Island, where she took a seven-year hiatus to focus on raising their two sons, Rob and Dave. A next-door neighbor later recruited her into the Bellevue College Parent Education and Cooperative Preschool program. She earned her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and remained dedicated to teaching, guiding families, and creating lifelong learners.

Beyond the classroom, Judy and Dan were deeply engaged in their community. From 2008 to 2024, they coordinated and volunteered at the Children’s Table at the Mercer Island Farmers Market, offering weekly lessons and activities for children. Their enthusiasm

and generosity created a space for families to explore, learn, and connect.

Judy’s love for nature, adventure, and travel took her family on hikes, beach camping trips, and sea kayaking excursions, particularly along the Pacific Ocean beaches of Washington and the inland waters of Northern Vancouver Island, where they

“JUDY WITMER WAS THE RARE TYPE OF HUMAN WHO MET PEOPLE EXACTLY WHERE THEY WERE AND GENTLY SUPPORTED AND GUIDED THEM FORWARD IN THEIR EDUCATION OR PARENTING JOURNEY.”

JULIE NEWCOMER, PRINCIPAL NORTHWOOD ELEMENTARY

shared countless magical moments watching orca whales. Summer vacations also allowed for trips to Europe, creating cherished memories with her sons.

Her enthusiasm for life extended to everything she did. She loved books and supported local bookstores, advocated for orcas and wildlife. She hosted Easter egg hunts, led holiday singalongs, and attended live music and theater performances with Dan. She saved acres of Amazon Rainforest through her Learning Lab Bake Sales, grew towering sunflowers in the Mercer Island Community Center Pea Patch, and enchanted students with her beloved “Lollipop Trees.”

In retirement, Judy found even more time to be with her grandchildren, blowing bubbles, building with blocks, and flying kites each February along the cold Pacific beaches of Washington.

In honor of her legacy, the xylophone in Dragon Park on Island Crest, is dedicated to Judy:

The Good Life Investment: Friends, Community & Joy of Living

Enjoying the wine investment

MICL editor Sharon Perez sat down with MIHS alumnus, BMW executive, and Robby Harrington Foundation co-founder Mark Harrington at Barrel’s Wine Bar to discuss wine as both an investment and a passion.

Mark: Some invest purely for financial returns, but for me, it’s about aging potential and the experience. Wine has this amazing ability to bring people together, which adds to its value beyond just numbers.

Sharon: Your Instagram feed showcases stunning wine photos.

Mark: I love sharing and educating—posting “wine of the day,” food pairings, and travel. Wine clubs are also great for exploring, especially Washington wines.

Sharon: Any favorites?

Mark: Definitely—Cayuse, Mark Ryan, DeLille, Doubleback, and Leonetti. I also love Montepulciano and Amarone and am exploring French wines.

Sharon: What’s your wine philosophy?

Mark: Keep an open mind. My first great wine had a cartoon label—totally unexpected. Never judge a wine by its label or price; just enjoy the journey.

Mercer Island Schools Foundation is a community-driven nonprofit that partners with Mercer Island School District to bridge critical gaps in state and federal funding to ensure all six public schools provide exceptional, well-rounded education by securing resources that help every student reach their full potential.

YOU What We Do

MISF funds essential programs in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Fine Arts (music, theater, visual arts) social emotional and academic student support; provides innovative, world-class curriculum and classroom resources that enhance student learning and teacher enrichment grants.

Why Support Who We Are

Since 2021, Mercer Island schools have faced a $29 million funding shortfall from the State of Washington. State and federal funding do not cover the full cost of the high-quality education our students deserve. Without community support, many of the programs that set our schools apart would not exist.

Managing Generational Wealth

Expert Insights for Our Families

The transfer of wealth across generations presents both opportunities and challenges. While many families want to ensure their heirs benefit from their financial success, wealth can quickly diminish without proper planning. To gain expert insights into this complex process, I spoke with Matt Tabler, a seasoned financial professional who has spent years guiding families through wealth preservation and transfer strategies.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THOUGHTFUL PLANNING

“We all came into this business with the goal of helping people make good choices with their money,” says Matt. “Our work is deeply personal—it’s about more than just investments; it’s about helping families navigate financial decisions so they can focus on living a more fulfilled life.”

To help families plan effectively, Matt shared eight key considerations for managing generational wealth.

1. PRIORITIZE ESTATE PLANNING

“Estate planning is more than just writing a will,” Matt explains. “It’s about ensuring that assets are transferred smoothly and in alignment with your long-term goals.” He recommends establishing clear directives, including power of attorney and healthcare proxies, to protect wealth during periods of incapacity. High-net-worth individuals may also consider trusts to provide additional control over assets.

PHOTOGRAPHY

2. CONSIDER LIFE INSURANCE

Life insurance can be a valuable tool in wealth transfer, helping to provide liquidity for estate taxes or unexpected expenses. “We often advise families to use life insurance strategically—it can ensure that beneficiaries receive financial support without disruption,”

3.

PLAN FOR TAXES

One of the biggest concerns in generational wealth transfer is taxation. “Many families don’t realize how much taxes can impact their estate,” says Matt. “Having a proactive tax strategy—whether through gifting, charitable giving, or structuring trusts—can help minimize tax burdens and preserve more wealth for the next generation.”

4.

DIVERSIFY INVESTMENTS

“A common mistake is concentrating too much wealth in one area, like a family business or real estate,” Matt warns. “Diversification helps manage risk and provides stability across different market cycles.” He advises clients to work with financial professionals to

Matt and Chris Rotberg, CFP

develop a well-balanced portfolio that aligns with their risk tolerance and long-term goals.

5. FOSTER FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND MENTORSHIP

Managing wealth effectively requires financial literacy. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping clients educate their children and grandchildren about financial responsibility,” Matt shares. He encourages families to introduce younger generations to budgeting, investing, and wealth management principles early on.

6. ESTABLISH PHILANTHROPIC GOALS

Many high-net-worth families integrate philanthropy into their wealth planning. Beyond tax benefits, philanthropy allows families to pass down their values. He advises clients to develop a structured giving plan, whether through donor-advised funds, private foundations, or legacy giving strategies.

7. MAINTAIN OPEN COMMUNICATION

“Miscommunication is one of the biggest risks to generational wealth,” Matt points out. Regular family meetings help align expectations and clarify roles, such as power of attorney and trustees. “Being transparent about your wishes and involving your heirs in financial discussions can prevent conflicts and ensure a smoother transition.”

8. ENGAGE PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

Wealth transfer strategies require expertise in multiple areas, from tax law to investment management. “No single person has all the answers,” Matt says. “That’s why it’s critical to have a team of professionals—financial advisors, tax specialists, and estate attorneys—who can work together to develop a strategy tailored to your family’s needs.”

LOOKING AHEAD: A LEGACY BEYOND MONEY

For Matt, financial planning isn’t just about numbers, it’s about helping families achieve security, stability, and fulfillment. “True wealth goes beyond financial assets,” he reflects. “It’s about living a meaningful life, pursuing passions, and ensuring that future generations have the confidence and resources to do the same.”

Invest in SUMMthing Exponential

Compound Your Interest in Art + Math!

Mathematics and art have the power to reveal truths—about the universe and about what it means to be human. In Spring 2025, Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) will celebrate this theme with a public art exhibition at the Mercer Island Community & Events Center, jointly produced by SUMM and MIVAL (Mercer Island Visual Arts League), with support from the City of Mercer Island.

Exhibition attendees are invited to experience mathematical “aha” moments, and delight in how 2D and 3D artworks can illuminate facts about individuals, societies, or otherwise emphasize the humanistic aspects of mathematics. The exhibition showcases works by local and international artists. This exhibition provides multiple opportunities to touch and manipulate several of the pieces, and be drawn into viewing physical representations of mathematical concepts and phenomena. Activities for engagement for both youth and adults will be available as well. Guided group viewings as well as associated activity workshops will be offered by appointment.

Exhibition Dates: March 3rd through April 25th, 2025. Reception at the April First Friday Art Walk, April 4th, 5:00–7:00PM

SUMM’s mission is to spark each and every person to love math. We love the wonder and beauty in math, how it helps us understand the world we live in and dream up ways to improve it. We exist to inspire kids to feel that way too. We love the beauty in an elegant proof, the mathematical relationship between notes in music, and finding a Fibonacci sequence in a head of cauliflower.

We support the inventors, musicians, engineers, educators, and artists of the future. We inspire kids to discover their passion for math and how it enriches their personal and professional life.”

YOUR GREENS

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.

EMBRACING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR BODY

Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.

Work in partnership with your body. Listen to it, support it, give to it, forgive it — and I promise it’ll give back. Repeat after me: I love myself as the most important and committed partner I will ever have

Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness, fuel your body in a way that is sustainable for both you and the planet, practice gratitude and empathy, give yourself grace when you lose routine, don’t try to make changes overnight, ditch the guilt, and always always be kind to yourself.

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment

These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.

EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.

This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.

CREATE SURPRISES

Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.

CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS

Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.

EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE

In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.

KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED

Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.
