We love any opportunity to recognize the women in our lives who make life more rich and beautiful. Friends, wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers and aunts are some of the most influential women in our lives.
With Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. But it’s not just biological mothers who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the female family members, teachers, coaches, first responders and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives, making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role, connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to local, regional women. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Thanks to ALL motherly types.

Women serve as selfless backbones of families and communities, providing care, support, nurturance, workplace professionalism, camaraderie and organization. Women also deliver significant roles in community building and leadership. For that, particularly during the month of May, Lifestyle team members applaud all local, inspiring females.
Every year since 2018, Lifestyle Publisher Sharon Duffy says she delights in gathering local women who are affiliated with both her magazines, McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle as well as Frisco, for a special, uplifting luncheon designed to foster new relationships through heartfelt networking and empowerment.
"I think it's important to give the opportunity for women in all three cities to meet and connect with each other through forming new relationships, and it's important to give all women chances to express and share their voices," explains Sharon.
The luncheon includes the publications' advertising partners, nonprofits representatives and community leaders.
Farmhaus Catering served for attendees.Sharon says the luncheon is held at a different venue each year, selected deliberately to support those owned by local residents. This year’s luncheon was hosted at the Prosper Wine House event center owned by Prosper residents Mike and Trina Lopez.
Yearly luncheons have been catered every year by FarmHaus Catering in McKinney, owned by Jason Lewis.
“We cater over 400 events a year, so you can say we’re in front of a lot of people,” Jason states. “I love that my staff remembers Sharon and this event every year, and is always excited to work it! It’s such a fun, beautiful event and a chance to meet new faces every year.”
Jason says businesses supporting one another is essential: “FarmHaus Catering by Five Star Event Services solely depends on referrals from other businesses, past clients and friends.”
“I had an opportunity to work this event this year and left making six viable business connections, including connecting with an event venue (the host), where our menu is now a part of their preferred catering program,” Jason shares.
To honor luncheon attendees, pictures are taken on-site for the magazines’ covers every year in support of the annual Ladies theme for May editions.
During the luncheon, Sharon states that each lady stands to introduce themselves and tell the group about what they do, in addition to any other details they especially want to share.
“I work with so many positive ladies yearround,” says Sharon, “and we also intentionally feature nonprofits in our publications to support various initiatives.” Those nonprofits include One Heart McKinney, L.I.F.T. R&R, Prosper Veterans Memorial Monument, Rotary Club, Burress Family Foundation, Prosper Education Foundation, McKinney Education Foundation, Hugs Cafe/Hugs Training Academy, Community Garden Kitchen, Love Life Foundation, Leia’s Kids, Beautiful Lives Project/Rockstar Runway, Grand Love, Spirit Of A Hero, Smiles Charity, Women Empowering Women Foundation, Treasured Vessels Foundation, Fish America Now Foundation, Community Food Pantry, LatterHouse Decor, St. Arbor Community Garden, Lovepacs, Frisco Family Services and Responder Impact.
Luncheon invitees look forward to this yearly event, confirms Sharon, citing their comments: “Thank you, Sharon, for bringing us all together;” “This has been wonderful meeting so many great ladies;” and “Thank you, Sharon, for introducing me to new friends.”
1. Don’t let common myths about networking be barriers, such as networking is only about how many contacts one has or it's only for extroverts.
2. Map out your network's structure. Who knows the people you want to know? Are relationships operational, personal or strategic? Trusting and mutually beneficial? Superficial and one-sided? Vertically diverse? Is your network heavy with people who are similar to each other? Is your network outdated?
3. Identify resources you need to do your job, have influence and advance your career.
4. Connect with others authentically by reading each situation and really listening.
5. Volunteer for projects or 'assignments' to get out of your comfort zone.
6. Develop networks by building, maintaining, leveraging and transitioning relationships.
This year, Sharon delivered extra luncheon sandwiches to McKinney firefighters in appreciation for their services to the area.
In conclusion, as another form of tribute to local ladies, here's a befitting poem.
A Poem By Nyx Crayton, Texas (as shared in Poetry Circle, one of the Internet's most active poetry forums and online journals)
Women are like flowers, soft and fair, elegant in every way, each one unique, a work of art, nature's beauty on display.
like a rose, a woman can be strong, with thorns to protect her heart, but open up to reveal her beauty, and a love that sets her apart.
like a daisy, wild and free, a woman can be bold and bright, with a spirit that can't be tamed, and a beauty that shines so bright.
all women are like nature's gifts, each one a treasure to behold, with beauty that's both rare and precious, and stories that have yet to be told.

At Niiidental Studio, McKinney Dentist Dr. Ben Kim, DDS., is determined to change the traditional image of a dentist’s office in that our practice is deliberately designed within a fun and friendly atmosphere to put our patients at ease during each visit.
Every Tuesday is Ladies' Day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Range in McKinney, offering women half-off indoor firearm lane fees and free handgun rentals.
"We wanted to build a different kind of gun range, one designed to make everyone feel at home,” emphasizes Julie Beyer, director of communications at The Range in McKinney and co-founder with her husband, Thom Beyer. “A range with great customer service and a family-friendly environment where men, women and families interested in firearm instruction, safety and proficiency could feel comfortable, as well as learn about and practice target shooting."
Since officially opening on Nov. 1, 2022, Julie says The Range in McKinney experienced significant changes and growth. She adds that over the past year, there has been an increase in the customer base as more people have discovered the establishment, and the events at The Range have catered to a diverse range of occasions.
"Our events have expanded over the last year. We've hosted a wide range of events, including bachelor parties, office team-building events, birthday parties, community fund raisers, friends and family get togethers, reunions, and anniversary parties,” states Julie.
Through their passion for target practice and years of experience, Thom and Julie established a community-oriented business that caters to a wide range of visitors seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge in a safe and supportive setting. Complete with an interactive live-fire range, on-site training, personal firearms and an immersive 300-degree video simulator, The Range in McKinney supports individuals and families interested in firearm instruction, safety and proficiency.
This range stems from Thom's lifelong passion for shooting, which he says began at the age of 8 on his family's property. Emphasizing the importance of proper teaching and respect for firearms, Thom dedicated years to sharing his knowledge with others, initially by taking friends to his
family's property for shooting lessons. Inspired by their travels to various ranges across the country, the Beyers share they had envisioned creating a unique practice range that prioritizes customer service and fosters a welcoming environment.
New membership options at The Range were introduced to better serve the needs of the clientele, including corporate armed security, school districts, school marshals, church safety and firearms trainers seeking a dedicated teaching space.
Julie says the beginner private lessons, allowing up to two participants per session, have proven to be extremely popular, with couples and families often opting to learn target shooting together instead of a classroom setting. Gun Safety Camps for youth and teens were launched, offering both online and in-person LTC options. Julie shares that the Silver memberships have exceeded expectations, providing an affordable option for individuals older than 65 and fostering a sense of community among members.
“One of the most pleasant surprises for us has been how The Range in McKinney has helped bring people together. For example, our Silver members include a group of retired gentlemen who met at The Range In McKinney and have formed strong friendships through their shared weekly target practice, coffee breaks and post-range lunches every Tuesday," she says.
The Range in McKinney is open to the public so no memberships are required to participate there at 415 Industrial Blvd. In addition to target practice, training, simulations and special events, they offer in-house cleaning and light smithing. The owners also coordinate with an external gunsmith for advanced work.
A key aspect of The Range in McKinney's ethos is its focus on education and safety. Julie explains, "We offer specialized membership classes and comprehensive training programs to ensure our patrons have the knowledge and skills necessary to handle firearms responsibly."
She adds, "From beginner private lessons to free Women’s Situational Awareness classes, we strive to empower individuals of all backgrounds."
A 20% discount is offered on memberships, lane fees and classes for all first responders, including military and veterans. Additionally, group memberships are available for security organizations and law enforcement agencies. Special training sessions are provided for women and other groups, such as tailored classes for women realtors and first-time women shooters is available.
A new specialized training class, The Texas Guardian Program, is the Texas D.P.S. approved training for school district employees and teachers to be accessible for schools and independent school districts to train, become certified, and comply with the new Texas state guidelines. Texas License to Carry courses are available both online and in-person.
Thom and Julie say they've developed a deep appreciation for McKinney and its residents. "The warmth and friendliness of the people have left a lasting impression," states Julie. "Witnessing families and friends come together to celebrate and spend quality time at our range is truly heartwarming. It brings immense joy. We are proud to own a range where everyone, regardless of background, feel at ease and welcome."
Julie says The Range in McKinney's commitment to the McKinney community extends beyond providing a welcoming space for shooting enthusiasts. "Giving back is a core value," explains Julie.
Over the past year, complimentary Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) and Women’s Situational Awareness classes were offered to educate and empower the community. Additionally, support has been provided to several schools, a respite charity, as well as veteran, military and law enforcement charities. A drop-off point for Toys for Tots was facilitated, and collaboration with a regional local hospital has led to the development of a hospital to develop a program focused on suicide prevention and gun safety for families in the community is in the works.
Looking ahead, Julie shares The Range in McKinney's plans for the future. She mentions, "We have exciting projects in the pipeline, including fundraisers, shooting competitions and large corporate events, all aimed at enhancing the experience for our patrons."
Thom and Julie invest a significant amount of time and effort into the unique aspects of operating The Range in McKinney, with a strong focus on creating an inclusive environment indoor range where everyone feels welcome. "Every day, we strive to improve our customers' experience and make everyone feel at home,” says Julie.

Rachel Olson transformed her business, She’s Gone Bananas, from an anxiety-induced baking endeavor into a flourishing cottage bakery in Prosper. With a background in hospitality management, Rachel’s career took a turn when her husband’s job ended, leading her to discover her passion for baking and entrepreneurship.
“When my husband lost his job, I went into panic mode,” Rachel recalls. Seeking a quick source of income, she began baking banana bread and posted about it on her local Homeowners Association Facebook group. What started as a simple endeavor in 2017 soon evolved into a fullfledged business specializing in custom buttercream cakes and other delectable treats, including homemade rice cereal treats and sugar cookies.
“Ever since I was a child I’ve had a passion for food, cooking and making people happy” explains Rachel.
Driven by her commitment to exceptional customer service and top-notch products, Rachel’s business flourished. She attributes her success to her dedication to quality, professionalism and personalized service. “My background in
hospitality allows me to offer a different level of service,” she states.
What Rachel believes sets She’s Gone Bananas apart is her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to professionalism. As a licensed LLC with business insurance and food management certification, she ensures that every aspect of her business is conducted with integrity and professionalism.
Rachel says using buttercream instead of fondant and royal icing also distinguishes her cakes.
Despite facing challenges and undergoing numerous trials, Rachel’s passion for baking and entrepreneurship remains unwavering. She says she dreams of expanding her business into a brick-andmortar establishment, providing the community with a welcoming space to indulge in sweet treats and socialize.
Rachel contributes the support of her family and the Prosper community for a large part of her success. “I truly love what I do,” she says. From humble beginnings to a flourishing business, She’s Gone Bananas stands as a testament to Rachel’s determination, passion and entrepreneurial spirit.

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. These easy-to-follow recipes are exploding with flavor and are simple to make.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ½ cups flour
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon lemon zest
• ¾ cup milk
• ½ cup vegetable oil
• 2 eggs
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon almond extract
LEMON GLAZE ICING:
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon almond extract
• 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder. In a separate bowl, combine sugar and lemon zest and lightly mix. Stir in flour mixture and set aside. In a separate bowl, mix oil, eggs, lemon juice, vanilla and almond extract. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan and bake for 1 hour. Cool for 15 minutes and then carefully remove from the pan. Next, make the lemon glaze by combining all of the icing ingredients and whisk until smooth. Drizzle glaze all over the loaf and sprinkle with almond slices. Enjoy!
For an added health benefit, try this probiotic-rich sourdough bread known for being easy to digest and a healthier gut-friendly option. To make sourdough bread, you will need a starter which can take anywhere from 7-14 days. To make your own, mix flour and water together in a jar and feed the starter each day until ready. There are many sourdough starter recipes online.
SOURDOUGH STARTER INGREDIENTS:
• 2 teaspoons sourdough starter
• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 5 teaspoons water
DOUGH INGREDIENTS:
• ¼ cup active sourdough starter
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 cups flour
INSTRUCTIONS:
Twelve hours before you plan to mix the dough, add the ingredients to make ¼ cup of active sourdough starter. Stir and cover and let the starter rise. The starter is ready when it has doubled in size and there are bubbles on the surface and sides.
To make the dough, add ¼ cup sourdough starter and 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of water and stir. Next, add 4 cups plus 2 tablespoons of flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Use a spatula to work the ingredients together until there are no more dry ingredients in the bowl. Wet your hand with a little water to prevent sticking, and pick up the dough on one side of the bowl and stretch it up and over itself. Turn the bowl a quarter turn and repeat this step until you have turned the bowl a full circle. Cover the bowl and let the dough sit for 30 minutes. Repeat the folding process one more time. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise on your counter for 8-10 hours.
Next, on a lightly floured surface, shape the dough into a ball by pulling the dough into the middle of itself. Turn the ball over so the seam is down. Use your hands to gently pull and cup the dough until it forms a tight skin. Place the dough on parchment paper and transfer the paper and dough to a medium sized bowl. Cover the bowl and let it rise for 2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 450°F. Score the top of dough with a sharp knife. Use the parchment paper to lift the dough up and transfer to a dutch oven. Place the lid on and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until golden brown.

As consumers, we are constantly being enticed to buy. Whether it’s the jewelry we can’t live without, concert tickets to a show we don’t want to miss, or that favorite pair of shoes calling our name, we buy what we love, and art should be no different.
If you are new to acquiring original art, you may find it daunting, but it shouldn’t be. It is a special purchase that forces you to dig deep and discover a bit more about yourself. At first, many people shy away from buying original art because of the commitment. It’s a big decision after all, and how do you really know when it’s the “perfect” piece? Because art is subjective, part of the process is learning what style of art is the best fit for you. Is it colorful and energetic abstracts, or soothing landscapes that catch your eye? Maybe you are drawn to local photography, or even figurative works. There is no wrong answer, and maybe it’s a mix of several styles that creates your unique collection. The best way to find out your “art personality” is to get out and visit your local galleries. Consider making it a tradition to visit galleries while traveling or buy a piece of art as a gift on special occasions. In the gallery setting you can explore various art styles, mediums, and even learn more about the talented artists who create those works.
With the purchase of original art comes other considerations. Often, we have clients who need direction figuring out what size of art they need and its placement in the design of their space. If you find a piece of art you love, you will always find a spot for it. Ask the gallery if they offer in-home art consultation services to see the piece in your setting. Great custom framing is key, and well-designed framing is the jewelry to a great piece of art. Quality archival framing protects your art from UV rays that can damage a piece over time. Original art should last generations.
I’m often asked, should I buy art for investment? There is a place for investment art, but I don’t believe in buying art with the pretense that it will go up in value. There is no guarantee it will and to me, good investment art brings different riches to your life. Art that brings you joy, adds personality to your space, and makes your home original is an investment in you. The best art investment should be the feeling you experience gazing into an oil painting that perfectly captures a warm sunset over the prairie, or the texture created by a palette knife on the abstract that seems to pop off the canvas. That is what makes investing in original art priceless.
Art that brings you joy, adds personality to your space, and makes your home original is an investment in you.
