“Habitat isn’t a one-and-done program. Our homeowners join a close-knit community of support.”
- Communication & Marketing Coordinator, Elayne Harrington
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati has welcomed the public to build with them since 1986. Beginning as a volunteer-run operation, they merged with other regional Habitat organizations in the decades that followed. In 2013, Cincinnati Habitat and TriState Habitat merged to become Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati. They now serve Warren, Butler, Hamilton and Clermont counties in Ohio and several counties in Indiana and Kentucky.
“Over the past 36 years, we’ve built nearly 700 homes in partnership with families who work hard but don’t qualify for a typical mortgage,” VP of Development and Communications, Tracy Wells tells us.
Habitat builds and renovates affordable houses for people making between 30%-80% of an area's median income. Partnered home buyers must demonstrate a reliable source of income and invest 200 hours of “sweat equity” in their home and education classes. Houses are sold at no profit with a 0% interest, 30-year loan. The homeowner's mortgage payments are reinvested to build future Habitat homes.
“Habitat isn’t a one-and-done program. Our homeowners join a close-knit community of support,” Communication & Marketing Coordinator, Elayne Harrington explains.
Habitat aims to help families achieve strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
“We give a hand up, not a handout,” Tracy says. “Building a home with Habitat is life-changing and creates generational wealth. They can invest money saved back into healthcare and education, and increase their quality of life.”
Habitat home buyers work with volunteers to build their own homes and the homes of others. In exchange, homebuyers are provided the opportunity to build and buy a home with Habitat for Humanity with an affordable mortgage payment.
“We give away nothing but opportunity,” Elayne clarifies.
Of their many annual programs, one of particular pride is Women Build. This program brings together community friends and colleagues, raising funds to create an affordable homeownership opportunity for a family in Greater Cincinnati.
“Achieving housing stability is far more difficult for women than men,” Tracy addresses. “Women Build invites women from across our region to help a single mom achieve her dream of homeownership.”
After being temporarily shelved due to the pandemic, Women Build is relaunching this year to raise $50,000 to support part of the cost of one house. The female fundraisers and donors will join Habitat representatives on the build site throughout May, alongside the homebuyer.
“I love bringing women together to help other women rise up,” Women Build volunteer leader, Melinda Kirk Stenger tells us. “The Women Build initiative is vital because it supports women attempting to accomplish a goal, that without Habitat and generous donors and volunteers, would be far out of reach.”
Any woman interested in learning to build a home is invited to join. No construction experience is necessary, as volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners.
"[Owning a home] has been so great and rewarding. It’s one of the best things that has happened to me and my family.” JaQuanna, a Habitat homeowner of 10 years shares.
Also returning this year is Habitat’s Rock the Block event on April 20, where volunteers participate in community revitalization projects. Rock the Block brings hundreds of volunteers to partner with neighborhoods to support the beautification and repair goals of the community.
Further information on how to get involved with upcoming Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati programs and events can be found at HabitatCincinnati.org.

Home renovations are more than just aesthetics; they transform lives by reimagining spaces. Brent Thomas Renovations was founded by Mason resident Brent Crank in 2010, focusing on custom woodwork, great communication, cleanliness and navigating clients through the often intimidating world of remodeling.
One local family’s renovation journey with Brent Thomas Renovations began in the summer of 2020, with their office, powder room, laundry room and mudroom. The powder room underwent a significant transformation involving structural changes, plumbing and electrical work. Bespoke woodworking pieces made by Brent Thomas Renovations’ in-house team included a desk for their four kids and built-ins for the office, adding personalized and functional touches to the space.
“With four young children we had specific ideas for the mudroom and laundry room that would make our lives easier and more organized,” explains homeowner Carrie. “Brent Thomas Renovations met our ideas head-on and went above and beyond with the design and custom work. They were exceptional with communication throughout the process.”

“Construction is an interruption,” says Brent, “so we set out to ensure we can complete our proposed work within budget and in the timeframe we establish. Our goal is to lift the veil and eliminate any potential pitfalls that too often plague our industry.”
Due to the overwhelming success of the first project, Brent Thomas Renovations was hired by the same family in 2021 to tackle the primary suite bathroom. This was one of their most extensive renovations to date. The entirety of the bathroom and closet were gutted to allow for a complete redesign. Standout
features include a shower with body sprays, a standalone tub and a custom closet system.
Brent explains, “We work with each client through the spatial design to ensure what we are quoting is exactly what they want. Once we agree to work together, a project date is established on our schedule and we begin to tweak the design and selection process. This ensures that by day one of construction, we have all items selected and ready to go.”
“The design team was amazing to work with, allowing us to visualize spaces and make changes,” shares Carrie.
“They created the most functional living areas with beautiful, custom design touches,” enthuses Carrie.
“The team takes pride in their work and you can see it in all of the rooms and pieces they created.”
The summer of 2022 marked the completion of the first-floor transformation. This phase involved a comprehensive renovation of the kitchen, dining room, sitting room and living room. All cabinetry was meticulously designed and built by the Brent Thomas Renovations woodworking team, showcasing their dedication to craftsmanship. A special highlight was a custom hutch and table designed and built for the homeowners, adding a unique and personal touch to the living space.

Brent Thomas Renovations has not only revitalized the living spaces of this home, but also created a positive and personalized experience for the homeowners. The commitment to overcoming challenges, the emphasis on planning and the unique addition of an in-house woodworking division distinguish Brent Thomas Renovations as a local leader in the world of home renovations. THREE LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNERS SHARE THEIR TREND EXPERTISE FOR DECORATING THROUGHOUT THE HOME.
Designer: Your Design Partner;
Photography By: Cincy Visuals
You may have heard about recent design trends like maximalism, sustainability, bold color, mixed metals, natural wood grain, statement lighting, quiet luxury and more. As always, there are many new and continuing decorating trends to explore. This can make it hard to know what to incorporate and what to leave behind. We checked in with three talented local interior designers, to find out how they approach decor in key areas in the home and how to make trends the inspiration, not the focus.
Living Rooms & Family Rooms | YourDesignPartner.com
Mason Interior Designer and Owner of Your Design Partner, Ricci Jackson, has been interested in creating comfortable spaces since she was a little girl.
“I drove my mom crazy every time I changed my room around. I'd fall in love with my space all over again, just by shifting a few things for better placement and room harmony,” explains Ricci.
In 2010 she jumped into entrepreneurship founding Your Design Partner, focusing on exploring the emotional connection clients want to feel in their homes.
When approaching a living or family room, Ricci says, “One of the most important questions I ask my clients is how they want their living or family room to feel. I ask what activities are common for them and if they have favorite elements they'd like me to design around, for example, cultural or heirloom pieces.”
As for trends, Ricci says, “I look to them for inspiration, but I tend to pay more attention to how my clients want their homes to feel. Trends come and go. What's more important is making sure my clients feel heard and proud of what we create.”
CONTINUED >
When she does incorporate trends, it’s all about small doses. Ricci explains, “I will typically add in what I call ‘seasonings’ (easy-to-change accessories). I might paint or wallpaper a single accent wall in a trendy pattern or color to wake up a room or to add a fresh point of view. This way it's palatable, doesn't overwhelm the space and can easily be changed when a newer trend comes around.”
Ricci is inspired by the 2024 trend of dopamine decor for living rooms and family rooms, which is all about using bold colors to create feel-good spaces that evoke joy.
“An easy and affordable way to introduce the dopamine trend is to infuse colors into your space with paint, accent pillows, an area rug, etc.,” Ricci explains. Sustainable design is also a simple consideration to incorporate by reusing and repurposing pieces of furniture you already own.
“One of my favorite projects from last year was updating a piece of furniture our clients already had. It was an entertainment center that felt less than inspiring, but having it professionally painted in a bold color made it the star of the room,” shares Ricci.
Patti Johnson of Patti Johnson Interiors, based in Lebanon, has similarly been intrigued with interior design since childhood.
Patti shares, “From the age of 7 I would pour over the shelter magazines that my mom received monthly and determine how I could make the rooms in the photos better.”
In her work today, she still loves finding ways to help people improve their home life and environment.
“There are so many elements of design that can improve well-being other than just aesthetics,” she explains.
Patti advises that designing for the client rather than a trend is paramount and helps create a classic and timeless interior.
“I like to create a current look and feel to my projects, however, I tend to avoid anything too trendy. I often have to advise clients against certain design elements because they will feel stuck with it five or more years down the road,” says Patti.
Designing or renovating a kitchen and dining area requires not only understanding how the space will be used (who cooks in the home, will they be entertaining), but also resale, budget and client education. While white kitchens have been around for decades and aren’t going anywhere, Patti is seeing more color and natural wood tones being infused back into kitchen spaces.
“One welcome trend is a bit more color and the warming up of spaces. I did more non-white kitchens with colorful granite in 2023. Blending a white perimeter with a wood tone or a painted island is also a must. Natural stained and wood-toned cabinets are also currently making a strong statement.”
Warmer tones can mean more exciting and personalized backsplash options as well as more lively, varied countertop styles. Patti also sees formal dining rooms coming back, offering a great way to express some personality.
Abby Connell of Decorating Den Interiors, also based in Lebanon, loves to create longterm relationships with her clients, seeing them through various projects and different phases of life.
“We’re often with many of our clients through major life changes; the birth of a child, purchasing or building a new home, marriage, divorce, aging, an empty nest and the list goes on. We develop personal, lasting relationships with our clients which makes what we do worthwhile,” shares Abby.
She also advocates for timeless design, especially for investment pieces in the room. Fun, trendy decor should be able to be replaced or relocated in the future for an easy update.
“Timeless design does not have to be traditional,” emphasizes Abby. “We have made very modern spaces timeless, it's just a balance of elements used to create the perfect space.”
She is currently loving warm wood tones that are popping up in design, “They just add so much to a space and I love incorporating them into a project.”
Bedrooms are often put off in favor of focusing on common areas for family and entertaining. However, the bedroom is where everyone starts and ends their days and the design plays heavily into the psychology of restfulness.
“I love bringing soft and comfortable items into the bedroom whether it be bedding, window treatments or a cozy sitting area. We also use color theory in bedrooms to make sure that we create peaceful, restful spaces. Most of the colors and patterns that we use are more subdued with softer lines and edges,” explains Abby.
Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.
ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESThe art of soap making has come a long way since our grandmothers’ day. All the nourishing oils, beautiful colors, scents and exfoliants would have been a dream to her. Today, it is easy to custom make soap for any skin type. Adding oils such as avocado, olive, jojoba, and argon are just a few ingredients to make a rich smooth bar.
Not only do handmade soaps get super-fatted oils to add moisture, they can also include some amazing exfoliants, additives and scents. A few of my favorites are honey, aloe juice, goat’s milk, activated charcoal and clays.
If you want to get started making soap try this simple pour and mold recipe.
ingredients
•2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
•1 lemon rind, zested
•3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
•15 drops of lavender essential oil
•6 drops of lemon essential oil
• Jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
directions
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

• 2 cups frozen pineapple
• 1 frozen banana
• 1 handful spinach (optional)
• 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon manuka honey (or other natural sweetener)

Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day.
