Setting Up for Success

It’s that time of year when local families switch from summer to school mode. While it can be stressful at times, there is also a lot of excitement. Our August issue spotlights home projects, local leaders and organizations that can help make that transition smooth.

Having a decluttered space to focus while studying is one key to student success. Our expert partners at Closets by Design take us through recent projects and share organizational solutions for kids’ spaces.

Navigating transitions between grades and schools can be challenging for students. Our community is blessed to have such an outstanding team of teachers, staff and administrators guiding local students along the way. Get to know Ben Brown, the newly appointed executive director of high school experience and principal, and how he plans to continue the Mason Momentum while strengthening Comet Culture.

We love sharing nonprofits that are building a better community —especially those established by local students. Spectrum Empowerment was founded to cultivate educational and social opportunities for children on the autism spectrum and with any developmental disabilities. Learn more about how Mason High School student Harshita Ganga uses STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) to brighten local children's futures.

This is our Kids + Pets issue, so we couldn’t leave out our furry friends. Dogs have long been known as “man’s best friend.” For those with disabilities, dogs are so much more. Canine Companions for Independence has trained and placed service dogs for nearly 50 years. Read more about this ‘pawsome’ organization and how you can support future dogs on their journey of service.

We hope this month’s collection of stories offers some inspiration for your own family and we wish everyone a successful start to the school year.

MASON NONPROFIT OFFERS ENRICHMENT FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM AND WITH ANY DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES.

Full STEAM Ahead

ARTICLE BY NAN PARASKEVOPOULOS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Spectrum Empowerment is more than an organization, it’s a labor of love.

Spectrum Empowerment is a local nonprofit dedicated to providing opportunities for children on the autism spectrum and with any developmental disabilities. Founder Harshita Ganga, a student at Mason High School, was driven by the struggles faced by her cousin with Rett’s syndrome. The rare neurological disorder affects brain development, coordination and communication.

Harshita partnered with Jill Hartsock, a gifted education teacher at Mason City Schools with 26 years of experience, to advise the group. Now, Harshita is the CEO and Board Chair, and Jill is the Board Director of Spectrum Empowerment. The nonprofit aims to integrate kids into the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), fostering educational and social growth. They offer a variety of programs catering to a range of interests and developmental needs.

STEAM events, held every second Friday of the month, provide hands-on learning opportunities. Activities include robotics, science experiments, Lego building, art and other programming. These events foster an interest in STEAM and provide a platform for children to explore their potential.

One parent shares, "Our son has always been fascinated by science and technology, but finding a program that catered to his needs was challenging until we discovered this program. The instructors have created a welcoming and inclusive environment where he can explore his interests."

Spectrum Empowerment hosts a sports event on the fourth Friday of each month featuring tennis and pickleball clinics. The events include mini-tournaments, encouraging friendly competition and physical activity. Winners receive prizes like math puzzles, promoting both physical and cognitive engagement.

Harshita notes, “A moment that touched my heart was when a parent shared a choice their son made.

There was a dance at school scheduled at the same time as a tennis event. When asked which event he wanted to attend, he chose the Spectrum Empowerment tennis event over the school dance.”

Special events are included in Spectrum Empowerment’s offerings. One notable event is a quarterly Dental Day. Participants engage in role-playing activities at a dentist’s office to help alleviate the sensory challenges often associated with dental care for children with autism.

The First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Teams is a cornerstone program, running weekly from July through April. Participants are prepared for robotics competitions at regional and state levels. This initiative not only builds technical skills but also fosters teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Spectrum Empowerment’s FLL Explore team, the Super Spikes, represented Ohio at the FLL World Championship.

Jill shares, “As one of Harshita's teachers, I am incredibly proud of her vision in founding Spectrum Empowerment. This initiative has profoundly impacted over 200 student participants and their families, enhancing their social, scientific and athletic skills. Everyone who participates in Spectrum Empowerment events is positively impacted and forever changed.”

Harshita explains her experience working with students, “Spectrum Empowerment is more than an organization, it’s a labor of love. The joy derived from working with participants and witnessing their growth is immeasurable.”

Spectrum Empowerment’s commitment to supporting and empowering children reflects a belief in their potential and a dedication to providing them with opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. Closets by Design offers flexible solutions for every age, space and stage.

Closet Creations for Kids' Spaces

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA LITTLETON PHOTOGRAPHY

Whether your child is an infant or a teenager, trying to figure out how best to organize their closet can feel like a puzzle that just can’t be solved. Deciding which storage solutions will work best now and into the future as they grow is a difficult task, and that isn’t even considering visual appeal.

The professionals at Closets by Design bring specialized knowledge and experience to create customized solutions tailored to individual needs. Their expertise not only enhances the functionality of the space but also adds a touch of elegance to the home.

“When we moved into our home in Mason, one of the first things we did was call Closets by Design,” shares homeowner Sarah Newcomer. “They understood my vision perfectly.”

Designer Joey Adams helped bring Sarah’s ideas to life, creating customized closets for each of her three children that would not only meet their individual needs but also grow with them. “The adaptability of the Closets by Design system works so well for children's closets because they are fully adjustable and can be changed as the child grows and has different needs for their storage space,” explains Joey.

Sarah loved being able to design three unique closet spaces. “My oldest has a larger walk-in closet so we were able to add a custom built-in hamper, one of our favorite features,” expresses Sarah. Although the closet in her middle child’s room is smaller, Joey was able to design a system that provides ample hanging and shelf space. “We love having the option to change the shelving and hanging arrangement even after it’s installed,” Sarah says.

As a designer, Joey understands that it is not only the functionality of the closet space but also the overall look. For her youngest child’s closet, Sarah wanted to make sure the appearance matched the rest of the room.

“The adaptability of the Closets by Design system works so well for children's closets because they are fully adjustable and can be changed as the child grows and has different needs for their storage space.”

“I loved that I could pick out rose gold bars for the hanging sections and rose gold handles for the drawers to match the rest of the room,” shares Sarah. “Changing the hardware along with picking out a drawer face that had a more sophisticated trim detail elevated the look of the closet.”

In this closet, Joey maximized space by utilizing triple hanging bars. In time, one of those rods can be removed for a traditional double hang or rods can even be swapped out for additional shelving. “Utilizing triple hang for little girls is a great option because they have so many cute dresses and outfits,” notes Joey. “I used drawers to store hair ties and bows, diapers, etc. and those drawers will be usable for underwear and socks as she grows.”

Extra shelf space in each child’s closet offered room for items like memory books, special keepsakes and often-used items like humidifiers and extra hangers.

Every Closets by Design project begins by listening to the client’s needs. “We are as close as you can get to a custom closet without the custom closet price. I love designing here, because with the factory in Cincinnati, we can be more custom than our competitors,” explains Joey.

Joey's passion for her work results in beautiful spaces and happy customers. “Working with the designers at Closets by Design was a smooth and easy process. We are so pleased with our closets,” shares Sarah.

LIFEASA LE AD LEARNER

As students return to the halls of Mason High School (MHS) in just a few weeks, they will see a new friendly face. Ready to bring Comet Culture to life and take on the role of lead learner, Ben Brown will start the school year as the new executive director of high school experience/principal.

Mr. Brown’s proven leadership was clear following multiple rounds of interviews with nearly 100 stakeholders at Mason City Schools (MCS), including students, staff, families and community members. A seasoned educator, Mr. Brown comes to Mason from Lakota, where he most recently served as principal of Lakota West High School since 2020. Numerous leadership roles and notable achievements have marked his 19 years of administrative experience.

Ben Brown begins his journey as executive director of high school experience and Mason’s newest principal.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Brown to our Comet community. We admire his commitment to connection and visibility, proven experience leading a large high school and enthusiasm for sustaining and enhancing extraordinary experiences and opportunities for our community’s teenagers,” says MCS Superintendent, Dr. Jonathan Cooper. “He is a humble, student-centered instructional leader who builds strong, collaborative relationships, and we look forward to the bright future ahead for MHS under his leadership.”

We caught up with Mr. Brown on the eve of beginning his journey at MHS to help the community get to know him better.

WHAT ORIGINALLY DREW YOU TO A CAREER IN EDUCATION?

I come from a family of educators and I have always valued the noble profession of education. Like so many educators, I want to make a positive impact in the lives of students and their families. I am motivated by creating positive change in the world, making a difference and working with youth and people in general. I want to contribute to the community through servant leadership.

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER THUS FAR?

The relationships established with everyone within the school community are at the heart of everything we do. It has been the thing I enjoy the most. Seeing our students thrive both during the school day and in their extracurricular pursuits and passions is what brings me joy.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I am most proud of being part of teams doing great work that improves student learning experiences while creating systems that sustain success and opportunities for our learners. Education is an interdependent profession and there needs to be great collaboration within the school community to take new ideas, develop them and bring them to fruition. Sustaining good work that empowers students and staff motivates me as a leader.

WHO HAVE BEEN YOUR GREATEST MENTORS?

I have been very blessed to have a long list of mentors on my journey, but first and foremost are my parents. They had long careers in education. My father spent most of his career in school administration, serving as high school principal and then assistant superintendent at Mt. Healthy. My mom was a teacher, working with students with special needs as an intervention specialist and later as an elementary classroom teacher at Finneytown.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR NEW ROLE AND WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST?

My goals are centered around listening, learning and leading. I want to build relationships and establish trust. I will be very accessible and observant, soaking up the culture of Mason and seeking opportunities to set the tone and lead in a positive, inclusive way that helps celebrate all of the excellence here in Mason. I will also explore pathways and opportunities for Mason Momentum on our journey to 2030!

WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE MHS STUDENTS AND PARENTS IN THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I want to thank everyone I have met in the Mason community for being so kind and welcoming. I want to assure the families and students that I will work tirelessly to support our students, to ignite their passions and interests and to personalize their educational experiences.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF EDUCATION?

When I have time outside of work, it is focused on spending quality time with my family: my wife Lynette, who is also an educator and my son Isaac, who is 10 years old. We enjoy doing things as a family: supporting Isaac’s extracurricular activities, making memories and finding things that inspire and recharge our spirits.

PUPPY POWER

Canine Companions is driven by passionate volunteers who help raise puppies to enhance the lives of people who need them.

CANINE COMPANIONS PROVIDES TRAINED DOGS TO EMPOWER PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.

Imagine a world where wagging tails bring hope, independence and joy to those in need. This is the reality that Canine Companions for Independence has been creating since 1975, by providing expertly trained service dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities free of charge. With more than 7,800 graduate teams and a robust network of volunteers, their mission is clear: to enhance the lives of people through the power of incredible canine companions.

Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Lab/Golden-cross puppies are bred in Santa Rosa, California and carefully selected by veterinarians based on their health and temperament. After their time with volunteer puppy raisers in different locations around the country, including in local homes with volunteers from the Cin-Day Chapter, the pups go to regional centers to undergo specialized training and socialization tailored to the unique needs of the people they will assist.

Some dogs alert their hearing-impaired owners to alarms, ringing phones, unusual sounds and danger. Others assist with fetching items, opening drawers and doors, paying with credit cards and helping with dressing and laundry. For those on the autism spectrum, dogs offer comforting nudges and help redirect heightened emotions. For veterans with PTSD, dogs interrupt anxious behaviors, wake them from nightmares and create a personal space in public.

Dogs trained by Canine Companions provide crucial support in various settings. They work in physical and occupational therapy, assisting at several Cincinnati Children’s Hospital locations. Canine Companions is also the only organization to place a dog in the Cincinnati court system, offering comfort to children.

Diane Gudaitis and Beth Tumbleson are two dedicated puppy raisers with the local Cin-Day Chapter. Canine Companions’ dogs get their start at these loving homes.

Diane shares, “A raiser has the dog full time. They get the dog at eight weeks and raise them in their homes up to 18 months. We’re involved in the long-term development of the puppies, preparing them for their future roles as service dogs by teaching them 30 commands, which are the foundation for their advanced training.”

At 18-months-old, the dogs transfer to a regional training facility. “Our training center near Columbus evaluates each dog's strengths and temperaments to ensure they’re perfectly matched with individuals based on their specific needs,” Diane explains. “They then undergo six more months of extensive training.”

Realizing everyone may not have the time for an 18-month commitment, Canine Companions has started a program where volunteers can become starters or finishers. Starters and finishers each have the dog for six or nine months. Volunteers can also become sitters, providing temporary care that matches their calendars.

Beth shares a glimpse into a day spent training her puppy, Brazil. “Puppy raising includes socializing her, taking her to puppy and obedience classes and taking her out in public,” she says. “Whether it’s to a church or a park, I make sure she has a full range of experiences around other animals, people and places.”

While other service dog organizations charge in the five-figure range, Canine Companions’ dogs are provided free of charge. The application process enables accepted applicants to have a companion animal within a year and a half to two years. “We not only raise and train puppies but also fundraise and host gatherings to support the cause, ensuring everyone has the support and resources they need,” Diane adds.

Beth notes, “Even though puppy raising is an unpaid position, it's worthwhile. It's a wonderful way to invest in and empower someone with a disability. You feel good about the commitment. It’s exciting and it’ll change you.”

The journey of these service dogs is supported entirely by sponsors and donors. Many local vets also offer discounts on their services.

Canine Companions is looking for help to continue this lifechanging work. Volunteer puppy raisers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of these dogs and teaching them the foundational skills they need to become successful service animals. Additionally, support as a corporate or individual sponsor is crucial in sustaining programs and expanding reach.

Diane urges, "We are always in need of more puppy raisers to join our organization."

Canine Companions is committed to reaching an ambitious goal by 2025—to become the most recognized leader in their industry, providing expertly trained, high-quality service dogs free of charge to all qualified applicants. As they strive to eliminate their waitlist, they aim to set a new standard of best practices, ensuring that no one in need is left waiting.

Join the Cin-Day Chapter of Canine Companions in this fulfilling journey of service to make a profound difference, one puppy at a time.
