Thankful Issue

Here’s Your Thankful Issue, You’re Welcome!

Some mornings start smoothly. Others start with me dropping coffee grounds across the kitchen like confetti. Either way, gratitude has a way of sneaking in, usually right after I sweep up the mess and get the dogs to stop “helping.” Gratitude is funny that way. It’s not about everything being perfect. It is about noticing what is already good.

This issue feels especially meaningful because I personally know the people we are celebrating. When I first met Dr. Dash, it was not in a boardroom or interview. It was when we were cleaning his house. Over time, I got to know his family and saw their generosity firsthand. With Mike Kinnan, I have lost track of how many times I saw him in the community, not just serving food but serving people, checking in like everyone there mattered. Bill and Lissa’s story through Maria’s Voice is one that makes you stop, listen, and realize gratitude is sometimes born out of the hardest places.

Even the businesses in this issue hit close to home. Interviewing Katie and Angela from Clean Nest felt like stepping back into my own history with Doran Cleaning. Seeing their dad helping with the books made me smile. Their journey brought back a lot of memories.

And then there is LeAnna Wurzer. I first saw her art at Chalkfest and was so impressed I had to ask if she would collaborate. Her painting graces our cover, capturing the heart of gratitude in Maple Grove with bold, beautiful color.

So yes, here it is: the Thankful Issue. Swept floors, burnt pizzas, empty coffee bags, loud kids, and all. Gratitude is not about perfection. It is about people. And this community gives us every reason to be thankful.

Warm regards,

November 2025

LIVES THAT LIFT OTHERS

Honoring three remarkable stories of service and generosity that strengthen Maple Grove and inspire far beyond our city.

Maple Grove shines brightest through people who give of themselves. This November, we honor three individuals whose impact reaches far beyond our city. From building communities to advancing global health to turning loss into hope, their stories show what gratitude in action looks like.

Dr

“From probiotics to Maple Grove’s Hindu Temple to Kalinga Hospital, Dr. Dash’s impact inspires deep gratitude.”

DR. S.K. DASH: SCIENCE, SERVICE, AND A SPIRIT OF GIVING

One individual whose work extends across the world is Dr. S.K. Dash. His journey, from a boy in India with a gift for leadership, to a scientist shaping a global industry, to a philanthropist whose generosity changes lives, shows how vision and compassion can transform communities.

A VISION FOR GLOBAL HEALTH

Long before probiotics became mainstream, Dr. Dash recognized their potential. Trained in nutrition and biochemistry, he founded UAS Laboratories in 1979 to develop research-backed products for the public. What began as a bold idea became an international industry. He published research, wrote books, and mentored scientists who continue his mission. More than an innovator, he bridged academic discovery and everyday families seeking healthier options.

For him, innovation was never just business. It was about improving lives, a value that guided every decision. His leadership inspired generations of scientists, and his company’s products reached millions worldwide. Today, his influence is still felt in labs, classrooms, and health stores across the globe.

A LEGACY AT HOME AND ABROAD

Though his work spans continents, Dr. Dash and his wife, Kalpana, have long called Minnesota home. His support helped establish the Hindu Temple of Minnesota, the largest of its kind in the United States, a spiritual and cultural anchor for thousands of families. The temple also

hosts music, language classes, and interfaith dialogue, drawing visitors from across the Midwest.

Beyond the temple, his generosity has strengthened many Minnesota organizations. From cultural festivals to Rotary youth leadership programs, he has invested deeply in the community he loves. He has sponsored concerts, exchanges, and initiatives that build bridges across generations and backgrounds, believing that diversity is one of Minnesota’s greatest strengths.

In India, his roots remain strong. As chairman of Kalinga Hospital, he helped transform it into a modern medical facility serving families across the region. The hospital combines advanced technology with affordable care, offering hope to those who once had little access. His foundation also supports rural health programs, schools, and scholarships, ensuring children in underserved areas have opportunities to thrive.

Dr. Dash has endowed professorships and research centers in both the United States and India, creating a legacy that fuels scientific discovery for decades. He often says, “Education is the greatest gift you can give.” Through scholarships and mentorship, he has helped countless young people pursue dreams once thought impossible.

Even now, he remains tireless, traveling frequently, checking on projects, meeting leaders, and encouraging the next generation. His guiding principle is simple: if you can help, you should. Here in Maple Grove, that compassion is visible every day. The temple that welcomes thousands, the students who receive scholarships, and the cultural programs that enrich our city all carry his mark. Around the world, hospitals, schools, and research institutions do the same.

As a community, we are thankful for Dr. Dash. Not only for his accomplishments, but for the example he sets. He shows us that true success is measured not by what we keep, but by what we give.

Bill & Lissa Weimelt, Founders of Maria’s Voice

STRONGER TOGETHER THROUGH MARIA’S VOICE

For Bill and Lissa Weimelt, grief became a mission that touches thousands. After losing their daughter, Maria Pew, they founded Maria’s Voice to create safe homes and stronger communities through education and prevention. Maria’s spirit, joyful, compassionate, and full of light, lives on in the work they do every day.

What began locally now reaches across Minnesota. In 2024 alone, nearly half a million people engaged with Maria’s Voice through trainings, outreach, and events. The focus is on recognizing early signs of unhealthy relationships and giving people tools to act before danger grows. For many, these simple lessons mean the difference between silence and survival.

Lissa and her team share their story in schools, businesses, and faith communities, and they train leaders from law enforcement to educators. One young woman said Maria’s Voice gave her the courage to leave an unsafe relationship. She believes it saved her life. Many others have echoed similar stories, proving that awareness truly changes outcomes.

Maria’s Voice also creates opportunities for survivors to share their own experiences, turning personal pain into education for others. This safe space has become a vital part of healing for families who once felt alone. Prevention, they remind us, is not only possible but powerful.

“Maria’s Voice shines as a beacon of hope, turning education into stronger and safer communities.”

Maple Grove has supported this mission from the start. The city was the first to join the Prevention Network, and local partners such as Spavia, Thrivent, Old National Bank, Prime Advertising, Malones, and Nothing Bundt Cakes (Maria’s favorite) have offered their support. Civic groups such as the Lions and American Legion, as well as Osseo Area Schools, continue to keep prevention front and center.

Through their courage, optimism, and dedication, Maria’s Voice has become a beacon of education and hope. Maple Grove is stronger and safer because of them, and for that, we are truly grateful.

FIREFIGHTER, FUNDRAISER, AND TRUE FRIEND TO MAPLE GROVE

When we asked who should be featured in our Thankful issue, one name came up again and again: Mike Kinnan of The Lookout Bar and Grill. To many people, Mike is more than a business owner. He is a neighbor, a friend, and someone who is always ready to step up when the community needs him.

The Lookout has been part of Maple Grove’s story for decades. When Bob’s Lookout first opened, it offered just 55 seats, 30 cent beers, and wide-open farmland. Over time it has grown into a full-service bar, grill, and catering business while keeping its home-style feel. For many families, celebrations, fundraisers, and reunions would not be complete without The Lookout.

Mike carries that same spirit of connection forward. For 37 years, he has served as Assistant Fire Chief for the Maple Grove Fire Department, responding to emergencies and mentoring young firefighters. His service extends beyond the firehouse. He sits on advisory boards, leads in community organizations, and joins efforts like the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, all with the same energy and generosity.

At the heart of his giving is Bob’s Lookout Foundation, which organizes golf tournaments, 5K runs, and parking lot parties. These events raise thousands for families in need while also bringing the community together for laughter, music, and shared purpose. The 35th Annual Golf Tournament this year is just one example, combining fun with life-changing support.

Mike’s big heart shines through in the many ways he gives, from lending space to local nonprofits to donating food and resources at a moment’s notice. He is often described as someone who never says no when help is needed. His example shows that gratitude is something you live out.

“When the community calls, Mike is always there to help.”

In honoring Mike Kinnan, we also honor the generations who have made The Lookout part of Maple Grove’s story. Cheers to the past, the present, and the many more years of community and service still to come. lookoutbarandgrill.com/bobs-lookout-foundation

JEWELRY WITH A STORY

Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs creates timeless pieces that honor memories, milestones, and heritage.

ARTICLE BY ANNIE DORAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN SIEMERS PHOTOGRAPHY

When you walk into Croft & Stern Jewelry Designs in Maple Grove, the first thing you notice is a genuine sense of belonging. Yes, the cases sparkle, and yes, the gemstones catch the light in every direction, but what stands out most is the atmosphere. The thankful season reminds us how powerful memories are, and jewelry has a way of keeping those moments close. That is what owners Kelly and Joshua Sternau set out to create: a studio that feels like a creative space rather than a jewelry store. The focus here is not on selling diamonds or gold. It is on creating pieces that carry meaning.

Kelly’s story begins with her mentor, Mark Lauer of Mark Michael Diamond Designs. She worked beside him for years, learning the craft and the artistry. When she took over his studio, she was determined to preserve the custom-focused spirit. “Maple Grove was the natural choice,” she says. “I live here, I am raising my family here, and I love the sense of community.” That sense of connection is woven into every aspect of Croft & Stern.

WHERE STORIES BECOME JEWELRY

Kelly set out to create a place where every design starts with a story. “Every gem, sketch, and casting begins with the client’s story,” she explains. Each order begins with a conversation. Kelly listens closely as clients share memories, ideas, and inspirations. Together they sketch possibilities, explore styles, and dream about what the finished piece will represent.

The next stage blends technology with tradition. Designs move into CAD modeling and digital renderings so clients can visualize their future piece. Then Kelly’s team uses 3D printing to create an exact replica before it is cast into precious metals. Lost wax casting, one of the oldest methods of fine jewelry making, ensures the final item retains every delicate curve and detail. At the end, each piece is hand-finished in the studio, a process that guarantees both quality and character.

Kelly’s passion shines through in rare colored gemstones, antique treasures, and one-of-a-kind creations. She works with lapidary artisans from around the globe, sourcing gems so distinctive the design is built around the stone. “We create the item for the gem, not the other way around,” she says. Her personal collection of antique jewelry, built over twenty years, also inspires her daily. These pieces, as she says, “whisper history” and remind her of the artistry that connects past and present.

Jewelry is also about joy and fun, and Kelly has a front row seat to what Maple Grove is loving right now. Wide gold chains, oversized hoops, and bold colored gemstones are on trend. Permanent jewelry, where chains are welded onto the wrist or ankle, has also captured attention and become a playful way to mark memories. While she enjoys seeing styles evolve, Kelly encourages clients to invest in pieces that truly speak to them. “Trends come and go, but you will never regret jewelry that feels like you,” she says. Classic diamond bracelets, simple gold bands, and timeless mixed-metal pieces remain favorites for a reason.

“JEWELRY IS ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS PEOPLE BUY WITHOUT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT IT,” KELLY EXPLAINS. “I WANT CLIENTS TO FEEL INFORMED, COMFORTABLE, AND EMPOWERED.”

What makes Croft & Stern meaningful is its role in life’s milestones. Engagements, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, new babies, and promotions are often celebrated here. Families return again and again, adding chapters to their story through jewelry. “We do not just make jewelry,” Kelly says. “We become part of people’s stories.”

COMMUNITY AT THE HEART

Beyond design and trends, Croft & Stern is deeply rooted in Maple Grove life. Kelly and Joshua are involved with Rotary, support citywide events such as Chalkfest, and host in-store gatherings that bring neighbors together. Twice a year they run estate jewelry buying events to answer the question, “Where do I sell my jewelry?” At their most recent event, buyers paid out more than $125,000 in three days.

Education is another priority. “Jewelry is one of the only things people buy without knowing much about it,” Kelly explains. “I want clients to feel informed, comfortable, and empowered.” Each appointment is approached with care and teaching in mind. The goal is never pressure. It is always about guidance, service, and trust.

In the end, Croft & Stern is about more than jewelry. It is about the stories the pieces carry, the hands that shape them, and the families who treasure them. Each design is crafted with intention, from the first sketch to the final polish, with a spirit that cannot be duplicated by mass production.

At Croft & Stern, jewelry does not just sparkle. It speaks. It celebrates. And most of all, it tells your story for generations to come.

Organically Clean Living

Thankful for their journey, Clean Nest Homes delivers natural cleaning, soothing products, and heartfelt service that create healthier living spaces

Katie Lother & Angela Ducklinski, Clean Nest

At Clean Nest Homes, cleaning is more than dusting, scrubbing, and polishing. It is about creating spaces where families can truly breathe. More than twenty years ago, sisters Katie Lother and Angela Ducklinski saw a need for a safer, more natural way to care for homes. “From the very beginning, we wanted to offer something that was safe, natural, and truly good for people’s homes,” Katie shares. What began with the two of them has grown into a trusted company known for its care, detail, and heart for the environment.

Their approach has always been thoughtful and personal. Each new client begins with an in-home consultation, where Katie and Angela listen carefully to household rhythms and preferences. “No two homes are alike, and no two cleans should be either,” Katie explains. That careful attention ensures every service feels tailored, leaving not just a tidy space but a sense of peace and sanctuary.

The sisters’ values can be traced back to their family. Raised by parents who modeled service and resilience, and guided by a mother with a masterful green thumb, they developed a deep appreciation for nature. That connection to the earth is now at the center of their work. Clean Nest has grown beyond homes to include The Clean Nest, a line of essential oil based products designed to bring the same natural approach to everyday life. With scents like lavender and citrus, these products do more than clean. They create calming rituals that transform daily

“We believe natural cleaning is more than spotless counters. With safe ingredients and soothing scents, our products transform everyday chores into moments of calm, comfort, and genuine care.”

chores into moments of self care. “We love hearing when someone says cleaning feels like self care with our products,” Katie notes.

Clients often describe the impact of a Clean Nest visit as a weight lifted off their shoulders, freeing them to focus on what matters most. That sense of peace is especially meaningful when the team provides gift cleanings for families experiencing illness, loss, or major transitions. These small acts of service carry immense value, offering clarity and comfort during difficult times.

Looking ahead, Katie and Angela are excited to expand their reach, growing both their service team and product line. “Every home we step into is a chance to make life a little brighter,” Katie says. For Clean Nest, that is the heart of their mission: building healthier homes and a more connected community, one clean space at a time.

We believe natural cleaning is more than spotless counters. With safe ingredients and soothing scents, our products transform everyday chores into moments of calm, comfort, and genuine care.

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.

Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.

Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.

To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries

• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

Path to Homeownership

EXPERT CAIT HAUGEN ADVISES BUYERS ON MAKING SMART MOVES IN A SHIFTING MARKET.

For mortgage broker Cait Haugen, mortgages aren’t just about rates and numbers, they are about people. As part of Edge Home Finance, Cait offers clients something rare in the industry: personalized options. Because she is an independent broker, she is not tied to a single bank. Instead, she has access to a wide range of lenders,

giving her the flexibility to match each client with the loan that best fits their needs. From starter homes to unique financing, Cait supports clients with expertise and compassion.

Cait’s entire philosophy rests on three pillars: education, advocacy, and empowerment. “I always meet clients where they’re at,” she says. That approach means breaking down each step of the process and being available whenever questions come up. Many of her clients are first-time buyers, and they often say her ability to simplify and reassure made all the difference. One young family with two small children once faced losing their dream home because their condo was not selling fast enough. Cait arranged for the grandparents to co-sign on the new loan, and the family ended up closing two weeks ahead of schedule.

THE MINNESOTA MARKET MOVES FAST

That kind of creative problem-solving is especially valuable in today’s climate. “Midwest homes, especially in Minneapolis, are selling faster than the national average,” Cait notes. “It is wonderful for sellers, but it means buyers have to be ready. By the time you leave the driveway, your dream home might already be sold.”

DO NOT CHASE THE RATE

While interest rates dominate the headlines, Cait urges buyers not to let numbers alone scare them off. “Rates change multiple times a day,” she explains. “What matters more is your monthly payment. Prices are still rising, so waiting for the ‘perfect’ rate could mean ending up with a higher payment overall. Buy in the range you are comfortable with, and know you can always refinance later.”

The end goal is bigger than a single transaction. She believes everyone deserves the chance to own a home and works to connect buyers with resources that make it possible. In a market that feels uncertain, there is reason to be thankful for an advocate who brings both heart and expertise, helping families take confident steps toward the place they will call home.

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

HONEY

ROASTED CARROTS WITH LABNEH AND FRESH DILL

Hosting Tip: “Ask for help from the right people. Some people aren’t going to be comfortable making bread rolls or a dessert, but maybe they’re great at making salad. Others can be asked to bring drinks or clean afterward. Nobody is a mind-reader—don’t be afraid to set up a spreadsheet where they can sign up!”

Ingredients

• 10 carrots

• ½ cup fresh dill

• 3 sprigs of thyme

Directions

• 1 cup labneh

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Wash, peel, and prep your carrots. If carrots are skinny, you can peel them and place them onto a cookie sheet. If the carrots are thicker in diameter you can cut them lengthwise into halves.

3. Drizzle honey and olive oil over carrots on baking sheet. Use your hands to make sure the carrots are properly coated on all sides.

4. Add salt and pepper

5. Bake in the oven at 400° F for about 25-30 minutes

6. Take them out of the oven and set aside

7. On a large serving plate add about a cup (or more) of labneh. My favorite is called Luretik.

8. Add your carrots then freshly chopped dill and thyme to the top

9. Drizzle a good olive oil over the whole thing

SEASONAL

HONEYNUT SQUASH

Ingredients

• 3 honeynut squash

• olive oil

• salt

• pepper

• smoked paprika

• pomegranates

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. Slice the squashes in half, remove all the seeds

3. Add olive oil, salt, and pepper and roast for 30 minutes

4. Add smoked paprika and pomegranates to serve

Hosting tip: “It’s all in the way you present it to kids…when you ask your kids to join, try not to make it sound like a punishment. Emphasize that they have a responsibility prepping really yummy food. Include a special drink for the kids while they’re helping, like spiced apple cider. Adjust your expectations to allow for extra mess, extra time, and know it won’t turn out exactly as if you had done it yourself. But the tradeoff of creating happy memories is 100% worth it.”

Cooking tip:

CRISPY POTATOES

“I don’t peel my potatoes because who really has time for that? The secret to this recipe: baking soda. The baking soda makes the water alkaline which helps break down the surface of the potatoes, making them very crispy and very delicious.”

Ingredients

• 10 small yellow gold potatoes

• 1/2 tablespoon baking soda

• olive oil

• salt

• rosemary, garlic, chives (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400° F

2. In a large Dutch oven, bring water, baking soda, and salt to a boil. Place unpeeled potatoes into the water and reduce the heat to medium-low. Once the potatoes are soft to touch (20-25 min), drain and let sit for 10 minutes.

3. On a cutting board, grab a potato and use any large object (wine bottle, glass jar) and smash down the potato. Do this gently and have a spatula close by to transfer to a baking dish. Once you have smashed all the potatoes, add salt and olive oil.

4. Place in oven and roast for 20 minutes or until crispy

5. Top with the garlic, rosemary, and fresh chives

CARAMEL CHEESECAKE

Ingredients

Crust

• 12 graham crackers

• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1⁄4 cup brown sugar

Filling

• 4 sticks of cream cheese (room temp)

• 1-1⁄2 cup sugar

• 5 large eggs (room temp)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350° F

Crust

• 2-1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

• zest of whole lemon

Caramel

• 1-1⁄4 cup sugar

• 1-1⁄3 cup water

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• 1 cup unsalted or salted butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. In a food processor, add the graham crackers, butter, and brown sugar. Blend until sand-like texture.

2. In a springform pan, add parchment paper and butter the sides

3. Place crust into the pan and pat down to form a smooth base

4. Set in the fridge and chill for 15 minutes

Filling

1. Add the cream cheese to a standing mixer. Make sure it’s room temperature—this is an important step!

2. With your whisk attachment on medium speed, mix the cream cheese. Once it becomes fluffy, add the sugar and one egg at a time. Scrape down sides as needed.

3. Remove the pan with the crust from the fridge, add the batter to the pan, and place into your preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

4. Remove from the oven and let sit. Once cool, cover and place in the fridge.

Caramel

1. In a saucepan, add the sugar and water. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Keep heat on medium. Watch the sugar water—it will slowly go from a light brown to a rich amber color.

2 . Once it turns amber in color, add the heavy whipping cream and butter and whisk

3. Turn the heat off and let sit for 5 minutes

4. Remove cheesecake from the fridge and add the caramel to the top

uniqueGIFTING

ADVICE EDITORIAL: ALTERNATE GIFT IDEAS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

The holiday season is officially on, and gifting is top of mind. We’re all used to scrolling online, browsing the malls or hitting the local boutiques, but sometimes it’s fun and unexpected to switch it up. If looking to surprise and delight recipients this year and to bring a new tradition to the season, offbeat gifting can be a great way to turn a new leaf on stale routines.

1) PRE-HOLIDAY SURPRISE.

For those traveling, send gifts early, such as cheeses, fruit or pies.

2) FUTURE FUN.

Browse winter or spring events; snag tickets to enjoy with recipients.

3) GENEROSITY.

Donations make heartfelt, thoughtful ideas.

4) TRAVEL.

Gift a loved one with a trip.

5) TIME.

Is a recipient busy, overloaded and overworked? Treat them to a whole home cleaning before or after the holiday.

6) LOVE OF LEARNING.

If a loved one is planning international travel, grab them a gift card for a language learning app.

7) THOUGHTFUL MESSAGES.

Ask friends and family to record loving messages on cellphones; combine recordings using a video app for meaningful holiday greeting.

8) BON APPÉTIT.

Sign up special someone for cooking class regarding favorite cuisine, or cuisine they struggle to make.

9) RECIPE BOOK.

Gather traditional family recipes and create printed books for guests as priceless keepsakes.
