LIFESTYLE LETTER
Have you ever wondered, “What makes fathers so important?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
My father is the strongest guy I know, someone who works hard to make sure his family is happy. All he asks in return is dinner around the TV, taking out the trash, and food shopping. It's always been the simple things that allow him to see that we care so much for him.
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fathers this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home and inspire the people around them:
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. The GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/ songwriter’s early releases, I’m About To Come Alive, The Sound Of A Million Dreams, I’m A Fire and Fighter ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker, yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure from the only record company home he’d ever known, MCA Nashville, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now.
Through dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be,” Nail began making his most “organic” work to date, David Nail & The Well Ravens, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh, Mother, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. In Nail’s own words, “My philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.”
His most recent release If I Could Call was released this past March. We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Nail before his performance at City Winery in Manhattan and found out a lot about his life, his music … and about him. This is his story.
“I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”
In the heart of America's sprawling countryside, where the breeze carries whispers of old tales and the earth sings of simpler times, there exists a figure whose music embodies the very essence of rural life. That man is David Nail, a humble small-town guy from Kennett, Missouri who found himself playing country music because it was “what the Good Lord told him”.
CONTINUED >
It’s been a good journey – over 20 years in music while on the road for 15 of those years.
He’s an unpretentious guy whose lyrics ring true. We met with him before his show at City Winery this past March, where he talked to us about his upcoming single If I Could Call which was released on March 15th. It’s a beautifully personal and heartfelt song about grieving the passing of a loved one and wanting nothing more than to have the chance to speak to them again.
Nail first picked up his father’s guitar in 6th grade –it had only two strings on it. The first song he learned was (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. He continued learning how to play until he reached 6th or 7th grade and figured that he wouldn’t get much better than that! Country music wasn’t a choice but rather a lifestyle. In his words: “I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.” There have been many moments where he’s tried to give up playing music and turn it in, but he said that The Good Lord has a way of pulling him back in. We observed right away that when he plays on stage he closes his eyes and gets lost in the music. Music helps him refocus and grounds him. It’s been a good journey – over 20 years in music while on the road for 15 of those years. In his own words: “I tried to quit to become a baseball umpire, but my father taught me to hate the Cubs and the Yankees.” Back to music he went.
Between the string picking and written words, music tells a much bigger picture, just like the vast fields he grew up around. Songwriting isn’t just about getting it all on paper. Nail's life gives breath to the words. “It’s hard to just make stuff up out of thin air.” A common theme in his songwriting is from the heart and pulling inspiration from home life. He feels that music is reflective. A big musical influence for David was Glen Campbell and Vince Gill - but his biggest influence was his father.
Nail's dad was a band director. Music has a remarkable ability to evoke memories and nostalgia: hearing a song from the past can transport listeners back to specific moments in their lives, accompanied by all the emotions and experiences associated with those memories. This leads us into his newest song about his grandfather. If I could call is written about a hypothetical conversation that he has with his grandfather who has passed away. At the end of the song he sings, “If I could call, I’d wipe the tears away and tell you about my only son who in the morning will be eight. If I could call, I’d tell you that the greatest thing I've ever done is give that boy your name.” Naming his son after his grandfather was not just touching but showed us his vast heart. This song came to him in one night, which is not something that happens for him very often. He usually writes when his wife gets into the bath and he goes to his office and picks up his guitar.
In the video, you see him in the space where it started from nothing but became everything. It’s like the walls were talking to him. Hearing stories of his grandfather comforted him while traveling all over the country.
David Nail, with his moving deep voice and heartfelt lyrics, stands as a testament to the enduring power of country music to tell stories that resonate deeply with listeners. From the honky-tonks of Missouri to the grand stages of Nashville, Nail's journey is one of perseverance and an unwavering commitment to his craft. With each chord strummed and every word sung, he invites us into a world where honesty, vulnerability, and authenticity reign supreme.
“The power of a song that hits you right” is hard to sing technically, emotionally, and psychically. A man who has sung them hundreds of times, mostly with his eyes closed as he performs. As we throw ourselves in the melodies and narratives woven by David Nail, we are reminded that the true essence of country music lies in its ability to capture the essence of life itself — its struggles, its triumphs, and everything in between. In the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, Nail remains a steadfast beacon of authenticity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans old and new alike.

Michael Dorf, a visionary entrepreneur, founded both City Winery and Knitting Factory, iconic venues blending music and culture. City Winery offers a unique fusion of wine and live performances, while Knitting Factory became a haven for indie music. Dorf's legacy lies in revolutionizing entertainment spaces with creativity and community spirit. Dorf started the company in 2008 in NYC where he saw a wide open space in the market to serve great wine to music fans who wanted to sit for a concert and sip out of a real glass–not a plastic cup. We had the opportunity to talk with Dorf about his love of music AND wine, while sipping on a lovely Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO START KNITTING FACTORY AND BE INVOLVED IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
You really should read my book! (editor's note: I just finished his book “Indulge Your Senses” and it is an INCREDIBLE window into the world of music entrepreneurs – if you love good music and good wine, I advise you to pick it up!) But I was managing a band, which led to putting out their record and trying to be a record company in NYC at the age of twenty-four … I struggled, and rather than go back to Wisconsin, I found the old Avon office on Houston, convinced the landlord to rent to me, and opened what I thought was a simple performance-space-meets-coffeeshop, with my record company in the back office. It kept growing into the international media business that was the Knitting Factory until I left in 2002.
TELL US ABOUT THE WINE THAT IS SOLELY BRANDED FOR CITY WINERY. WHO MAKES IT?
We make all our own wine. We have about 30 vineyards, mostly on the West Coast, under contract bringing about 400 tons of grapes to our various locations, all of which are bonded wineries. David Lecomte, our chief winemaker, who started when we originally opened 15 years ago, still is in charge of our overall winemaking.
HOW MANY LOCATIONS ARE THERE AND WILL YOU BE EXPANDING BEYOND THE US?
16 locations now, and I hope to open in London UK in the next 3 years.
ARE YOU A BORN AND BRED NEW YORKER?
I was born in Milwaukee and moved to NY in 1986 at the age of 24.
THE VENUE IS ALWAYS BUSY! HOW MANY SHOWS DO YOU PUT ON EACH MONTH?
25-30 shows per month in each of our rooms, in our Manhattan location we have two spaces, so 55-60 shows.
FAVORITE PART ABOUT CITY WINERY? WHY DO PEOPLE RESONATE WITH IT?
Because we indulge their senses. We are thinking about all the little sensory components, taste, smell, feel, hearing, sight and make sure everything is working in sync. When it is, it becomes magic.
IS EACH CITY WINERY DIFFERENT?
Most of our spaces are an adaptive reuse of the buildings so have some differences in size and layout, but overlap in other various looks and feel. We want the front of house to have some individuality with the back of house and systems to be exactly the same.
“David Lecomte, our chief winemaker, who started when we originally opened 15 years ago, still is in charge of our overall winemaking.”
“I wanted to create something that no technology can replicate: a kind of spiritual experience in a sacred place.”
WHAT’S YOUR FUNNIEST STORY?
I wanted to create something that no technology can replicate: a kind of spiritual experience in a sacred place. A great example of this occurred in August of 2013, when Prince was in town. We had already booked four sold-out nights with his band The New Power Generation – but, as usual, there were no guarantees that Prince himself would show up. During the Friday night show, he actually circled the block in his car but, for whatever reason, decided not to come in. Then, on Sunday night, his band played a long, killer show and the concert appeared to be over. But, just after 3 am, the crowd let out a roar when “His Badness” himself strode onto the stage, dressed in black, wearing shades and a long gold chain necklace. Prince proceeded to play a wild, thirty-two-song show with two encores. By the time he finished, it was nearly 6 a.m. Our delirious audience staggered out into the downtown dawn, sleep-deprived but totally energized, still high from his incredible performance (and the superb food and wine – I’m just sayin’). There’s no app for that.

YOU WORKED NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AS A STYLIST, TELL US ABOUT THAT EXPERIENCE. WHAT MADE YOU GET INTO STYLING? YOU’RE VERY STYLISH YOURSELF, BY THE WAY!
I LOVE FASHION…. Beautiful, Provocative, Sexy, Cool…ALL OF IT!
Styling myself is expressive and creative.
I studied Fashion Merchandising and Design at F.I.T. and worked as a freelance stylist designing and installing window and in-store displays of luxury retail brand items. That opened doors of opportunity for me to meet and work with designers as well as photographers. Such an exciting and memorable time in my career. It was amazing to work with super-models and handle high-end luxury goods.
My role was to ensure that these items were accurately depicted during photo shoots as specified by the designer. I also worked on fashion shows and TV/ film wardrobe styling, where I would shop and acquire clothing pieces as specified by the costume designer, maintain and organize fashion closets for on-set and on-location dressing of the models and actors.
AND NOW YOU'RE AN EVENT PLANNER... TELL US MORE.
After working as a stylist on TV/Film sets, organizing and setting up for events, becoming an event planner was a natural progression for me. I got my start as an event planner at The Bubble Lounge in Tribeca, where I worked as their Special Events Manager.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR INTEGRATION WITH REAL ESTATE TO EVENT PLANNING?
I am passionate about both real estate and event planning. I love the connectivity with my clients and team. I’m also a great proponent of having a dual career and merging both if possible. Finding someone a home or celebrating their milestone moment – it all starts with the space. It’s about space, and I’ve been fortunate enough to find myself in both real estate and event planning. When I walk into a space, I think about its architecture, its use, and whom it may best suit. Whether it’s staging a space for an event, a party, to lease or to sell, I love to work with spaces.
WHAT WAS YOUR STRATEGY FOR KEEPING BUSINESS DURING COVID WHEN THINGS WERE SHUT DOWN?
Changing, adapting, and pivoting from the real estate industry into my events planning business was essential during COVID-19. There was a lot of uncertainty in the real estate market, so I decided to launch my events planning business. During this time, it was important for me to stay connected with my team and clients through social media. Without a physical store, my online presence was a great way to get noticed. I set up a company blog to address current issues and provoke questions from my audience. Being flexible with the ever-changing times was key to keeping my business afloat and building new relationships whilst working remotely. I coordinated several online meetings and events and kept the channels of communication open with my team.
“Whether it’s staging a space for an event, a party, to lease or to sell, I love to work with spaces.”
WHAT’S IT LIKE LIVING IN NYC WHERE IT’S SO COMPETITIVE … HOW DO YOU STAND OUT?
I must say after living and traveling around the world, New York is one of my favorite cities to live in. The energy and excitement can’t be beaten. From the vibrant to the serene, each neighborhood has its unique style and charm. New York is truly a hub for creativity and originality. With a multitude of individuals competing, to win attention, I find being genuine and consistently expressing my ideas and creativity in my work sets me apart from many of my competitors. Building relationships with my clients is important, and along with my passion and dedication to the work I do, I have a reputation for exceeding expectations and being fun and energetic.
FAVORITE EVENT TO PUT TOGETHER AND HARDEST?
We remember the events in life in moments, and I recognize the importance of making special moments memorable - that is why I do this. Designing, creating, and delivering on my client’s vision whether a small celebration, milestone event, or a large gala.
It always gives me great joy to see my clients light up when they walk into the event or party space that my team and I designed. No event is too hard or impossible with the right resources. Milestone events like weddings and mitzvahs are my favorite. They offer me any opportunity to connect and make a lasting impact on my client’s life.

1. Plan in advance.
Besides allowing you to avoid last-minute stress - it is a surefire way to get the best work from your florist. Here’s why: if they can have your order in before they are ordering their flowers from the wholesaler or farm, you will get the best quality and seasonal selections that way. Also, does your partner love peonies? Know that everyone loves peonies. Be the HERO who got them before they sold out.
2. Think about the card message.
Before you place your order, online or on the phone, write out what you want on the message card that accompanies your floral arrangement. Think about how you want your recipient to feel and put it in your own words, and not written by A.I. Pro Tip- select a florist that hand writes the cards (like ÉLAN FLOWERS does). Or better yet, stop by and write your own.
You don’t have to wait for a special occasion or celebration. Order flowers to make ordinary days extraordinary. Order flowers 24/7 through our website or up until noon for same-day delivery or order your flowers for pickup on the way home from work to arrive with them in your arms.
Protip: ask the floral associate what they think is particularly beautiful that day. Just like a restaurant, the best florists are buying the finest seasonal flowers week by week.
If you send your special person flowers often and both spontaneously and on special occasions, they will not be suspicious of your gift as an apology for something.
When you come home with that beautiful bouquet, you will receive a hero’s welcome, every time. You get the picture.
If you are lucky enough to live with your recipient- remember to change the water for them in the arrangement every day. It’s easy - but if you need tips there’s a video tutorial on our IG bookmarks- showing how to gently lift the arrangement over the sink and tilt it while holding the flowers in the case and then upright the arrangement and refill the vase with fresh tap water to extend the life of the arrangement.
Protip: Impress by refreshing the arrangement by removing any expired blooms - this leaves all the remaining flowers of a full lush arrangement to shine and keeps your gift for the longest period possible. (3-5 days or longer!)
Bonus: If the flowers are a hitReplace the arrangement with a fresh one every week by giving the gift of a weekly subscription!
Many men don’t consider sending their dads flowers on Father’s Day like they do for moms on Mother’s Day. However, I lost my father at a young age and remember ordering flowers for his funeral, but never thought to do it when he was still around. Time is precious and life is fleeting and ephemeral - like a fresh flower arrangement. Don’t hesitate to remember Dad with flowers on FATHER'S DAY, too.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
02.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads: Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
Instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first.
