HARDWOOD SOPHISTICATION: THE GLOBAL RISE OF TREVOR HUDGINS

“All

Style Through The Years

One of the clearest hallmarks of our era is the personal style reflected in our clothes.

I was born in 1984, which means my style has been shaped by some of the most wildly different fashion eras imaginable.

In the ‘80s and early ‘90s, everything was about color. I lived in neon windbreakers, high-tops, and T-shirts plastered with cartoon characters. I also rotated through an endless supply of sports jerseys, my favorite being a Jim Kelly Buffalo Bills jersey. Then came the coveted Starter jackets. Though I never scored the holy grail - the Charlotte Hornets - I did have a Bills jacket. Those things were the ultimate status symbols of the ‘90s.

High school in the late ‘90s and early 2000s brought a heightened awareness of brand names. We wore Abercrombie hoodies, Lucky Brand jeans, and cargo pants with enough pockets to stock a small gas station. The hallways felt like a rolling advertisement for mall and skate culture.

In my 20s and into my 30s, the sports-nerd vibe gave way to T-shirts featuring vintage beer logos and cheeky slogans. I wasn’t afraid to break out a button-down when I needed to look like I had it together, though I still held onto touches of nostalgia like ball caps from teams I’d never watched. At the same time, I became more intentional with my wardrobe, making sure, at the very least, that my clothes no longer had holes.

Now, in my 40s, my style has settled into a comfortable balance. I lean toward neutral colors and find myself wearing khaki pants most days. Sport coats have become a regular staple, and my dress shoes need to strike the perfect balance between classy and comfortable. I try to keep my sneakers clean, and when I do wear sports gear, it’s usually in shades of purple or lavender.

In this issue, we celebrate styles across generations. From basketball star Trevor Hudgins, sharp in a timeless suit from Borck Brothers, seated on a classic 1962 Buick Invicta, to the curated treasures at Little Apple Vintage - there’s truly something for everyone, blending the best of past and present fashion.

No matter your style, my hope is simple: that you feel confident and comfortable in what you wear. The truest style always starts with feeling like yourself.

Happy September! Go Cats!

Warm Regards,

September 2025

From Manhattan to Global Stardom: The Rise of Trevor Hudgins

On June 24th, 2022, anticipation buzzed through the basement of a Little Apple home, where friends and family gathered. Some sank into couches, others stood, but every eye was locked on the TV airing the NBA Draft broadcast.

The basement was decked out with memorabilia from the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State, but this

celebration wasn’t for a Wildcat — it was for a Bearcat: Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State University.

Trevor Lamont Hudgins was born on March 23, 1999, in Manhattan. The son of Sterling and Pat Hudgins, he’s the younger brother of Chris and Sharnée. Trevor’s basketball journey began humbly, with his passion for the game ignited early on. Though he was active in many sports, he honed his basketball skills through countless junior teams and neighborhood pick-up games, often on the court next door.

He rose to prominence at Manhattan High, where his leadership, passing skills, and pinpoint shooting set him apart. The 5’11” left-hander displayed early flashes of the talent and relentless work ethic that would carry him far beyond the Little Apple.

Despite his impressive high school performance, Trevor flew under the radar of major Division I programs, not receiving a single offer. Undeterred, he chose to join Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, a Division II school with a proud basketball tradition. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

At NWMSU, Trevor blossomed into a true star. He became both a prolific scorer and a commanding floor general. Over four seasons, Hudgins led the Bearcats on an extraordinary journey, capturing three consecutive NCAA Division II national championships. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Division II history.

His college career overflowed with accolades: multiple NABC and MIAA Player of the Year awards, multiple Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player honors, and a school-record 2,829 points — the highest total in MIAA history. His performances drew national attention, and opened the door to the NBA.

Which brings us back to that basement in June 2022. Although his name wasn’t called on tv, just moments after the broadcast ended, his phone rang. His agent, George Landberg, had prepared him for this moment. On the other end was Houston Rockets general manager Rafael Stone, delivering the life-changing news: Trevor Hudgins was officially in the NBA.

Trevor signed a two-way contract with the Rockets, which allowed him to split time between Houston and their NBA G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Under this arrangement, he could play a limited number of NBA games, while spending most of the season developing in the G League.

He made his NBA debut for the Rockets on October 22, 2022, against the Milwaukee Bucks, and he appeared in a handful of games that season. Despite fierce competition and limited minutes, his drive was unwavering, signaling just the beginning of his professional journey.

Trevor soon took his talents overseas, signing with Le Mans Sarthe Basket (Le Mans MSB) in the fiercely

competitive LBN Élite, France’s top professional league. The organization boasts a rich history and a culture closely aligned with what Trevor has grown accustomed to: family-oriented, well-organized, and deeply supportive.

In France, Hudgins has been able to blend his American skill set with the distinctive European style of play, a combination that suits his game perfectly. This was evident in 2024, when he earned a spot on the All-LNB Élite Second Team and a new contract for a third season.

“God willing, I just keep playing,” he says. “I want to keep playing the sport I grew up playing, and grew to love. Hopefully I have a long career.”

For a kid from the Little Apple, chasing a basketball dream, Trevor Hudgins has proven that greatness can come from anywhere, and the entire world is the next step. Now, it’s just a matter of learning French!

LITTLE APPLE VINTAGE

CURATING CLOTHING WITH HISTORY

ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOFFMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE

Locally owned by Matthew Klassen, Little Apple Vintage is a clothing shop with a strong sense of history. The store’s walls are lined with Royal Purple K-State yearbooks, antique maps of Manhattan, and rows of retro K-State and Chiefs baseball caps.

Matthew’s love of history was sparked by early experiences with his father and grandfather. “My dad’s a history buff,” he says. “I collected coins with my grandpa, and that kind of got me into the old stuff.”

As a child, Matthew moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to southwest Kansas, where he noticed it was harder to find distinctive clothing. He’d pick up unique shirts on family trips to places like Disney World or Santa Cruz. While attending Kansas State, he stumbled across a vintage San Jose Sharks jersey at the local Goodwill. This experience catalyzed his interest in vintage clothing, and he dove into reselling items on online retailers like Depop, eBay, and Mercari. He learned the insand-outs of the resale business: how to curate interesting items and then repair, photograph, list, and ship them, all while juggling K-State classes and a job in Aggieville.

When the pandemic hit, Matthew worried about the future of his burgeoning endeavor. However, he found that online vintage sales surged, as people had more time to search and shop. In late 2021, he launched the Little Apple Vintage Flea, which was first held at what’s now Parkside Station. These pop-ups soon created a community, with Matthew making connections with other local resellers and regular customers.

Matthew is quick to clarify that Little Apple Vintage is not a thrift store. “Usually, thrift stores have donated items,” he explains. “We curate everything here. True vintage clothes are at least 20 years old.” Every piece is cleaned before being displaying — a process that requires about 25 loads of laundry each week. “The dryer only gets a break when I’m at the shop,” Matthew laughs. While the store does not engage in haggling, its prices are usually lower than what you’d see on national resale sites.

In April, Matthew and his business partner Andrew Kemp opened the permanent Little Apple Vintage Shop storefront. Community, affordability, sustainability, and storytelling are the core values behind the business. “There’s a lot of stories in here,” Matthew says. “Each piece has its own previous life, so it’s got its own history. You never know who was wearing it or where it’s been.”

include K-State athletes — former Wildcats point guard Markquis Nowell was an early supporter.

“We really want everyone to be able to come in here and find something they like.”
— Matthew Klassen

The store’s inventory comes from yard and estate sales, a textiles warehouse, and locals who schedule appointments to bring in clothing. Most items date from the 1970s through early Y2K, with an especially deep selection of K-State gear. There are also screen printed and upcycled items using vintage materials. In contrast to fast fashion, much of the clothing is made from natural fibers and manufactured in the U.S. The available sizes range widely, from baby-sized K-State tees to oversized varsity jackets. During my August visit, Matthew was beginning to turn over the inventory for the season, with shorts and tanks giving way to pants and winter wear.

“We really want everyone to be able to come in here and find something they like,” Matthew says.

The shop is currently open Fridays and Saturdays, with plans to add Thursdays and Sundays. The pop-up flea market continues monthly during the school year.

The shop’s customers come from all walks of life: Junction City high schoolers, K-State firstyears learning what “vintage” means, collectors looking for specific items, and folks who remember when these items were new. Regulars even

• Y2K: Low-rise denim, crop tops, bold colors.

LIVING STYLE in

THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

INthis unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression.

As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors.

Although we tend to consider cost-perwear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for

the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space.

The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.

In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that

are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory.

Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes.

The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.
