Life Is Like A Basket of Chicken Wings

I turn 41 this month, and I’ve come to fully believe that life is a lot like a basket of chicken wings. Stick with me here.

Sometimes you order them up with confidence, knowing exactly what you want. Hot buffalo, extra crispy, extra ranch. Other times, you take a chance on a sauce you’ve never had, hoping it pays off. Either way, you don’t always know what you’re going to get. Some baskets arrive perfectly cooked and sauced just right. Other times, you end up with something overcooked, underwhelming, or just plain nasty. That’s life: some days are the perfect wing, some days you’re left scrapping the basket for a burger and fries.

It reminds me of that classic line from the movie Tommy Boy, when Chris Farley’s character says, “Even if I didn’t get the chicken wings, I still have a meat lover’s pizza in the trunk.” At first it sounds like a goofy throwaway line, oh and it is, but there’s wisdom buried in it. Life doesn’t always give us the exact basket we ordered. We don’t always get the promotion, have the perfect plan, or a smooth road ahead. But if we look around, we always have a “pizza in the trunk.” Meaning, even when life doesn’t go our way, there’s always a silver lining in every situation and always something to be grateful for.

Sure, sometimes you’ll burn your tongue, sometimes you’ll get more bones than meat, and sometimes your order won’t come out quite right. But like Tommy Boy reminds us, that’s okay. Because in the end, there’s always another basket to try - or a surprise pizza waiting in the trunk!

In The Food Issue, we’re excited to share our staff picks for the best wings in the Manhattan area. This article was inspired by one of the Little Apple’s favorite events: Wing Wars at Manhattan Brewing Company. With so many amazing wing spots in town, choosing just six was no easy task. We also visit Full Circle, Aggieville’s fantastic spot for breakfast and cocktails. And just in time for the holidays, we’re sharing a classic pumpkin cookie recipe!

I hope you enjoy this issue, and remember: life, like wings, is best when you savor what you have, laugh at the mess, and keep reaching for the next, best bite! Just don’t forget the ranch!

Happy October!

Warm Regards,

October 2025

Aggieville’s Full Circle delights with fresh breakfast favorites and imaginative cocktails, making every meal a memorable experience, whether it’s morning, noon, or happy hour.

Full Circle

Full Circle is Aggieville’s newest hotspot. A blend between a hometown diner and an elevated cocktail lounge, the restaurant was first dreamed up in 2018. This story begins at Kansas State University. Tanner Hockenbury, a communications major from Lawrence, balanced his classes with shifts at Nico’s, where he met Cameron Williams. Originally from Ellinwood, Cameron studied horticulture at K-State. Michael Chen, a Manhattan native and business graduate, grew up learning the ropes of the restaurant industry from his parents,

longtime owners of Chen’s Chinese Restaurant. Together, the trio shared a desire to create something new: a breakfast restaurant for townies in the heart of Aggieville.

After identifying a potential location on Laramie St, construction delays and the outbreak of COVID-19 put their plans on the backburner. Five years and a few career pivots later, an opportunity arose that none of them could ignore. In 2023, the old Hunam Chinese Restaurant space, right in the middle of Aggieville, became available. The three friends jumped at the opportunity.

Every aspect of the restaurant was designed with intention. When the team first got the keys, the space was a uninspired rectangle of concrete floors and cinderblock walls. Tanner, who had developed a love for design, took the lead. He introduced rounded arches, globe lights, and a curved bar faced with textured wood. Inspired partly by disco aesthetics, he painted the entire space a bold retro blue, which was a decision he briefly doubted until the flooring and lighting

brought the space together. “I almost cried thinking I’d made a mistake,” he shares, “but in the end, it was exactly what the space needed.”

The menu reflects the same careful thought. Instead of offering dozens of items, the team opted for a small, curated selection. “People think they want endless options, but in reality, they don’t,” Tanner explains. “We wanted to focus on a handful of dishes we could execute perfectly, made from scratch.”

That philosophy has paid off. The chicken and waffles, featuring chicken soaked for two days in a spiced buttermilk bath, has become the restaurant’s most popular dish. The avocado toast, topped with vibrant slices of watermelon radish, offers a fresh, eye-catching vegetarian option. The cinnamon rolls are

flavored with orange and cardamom, while the brisket is smoked on-site. “We wanted everything not just to taste good but to look good,” Tanner says. “In a college town, that’s often overlooked, but presentation matters.”

Many recipes came from informal late-night experiments. Before the restaurant opened, Tanner and Cameron often tested dishes in their apartments, improvising with whatever ingredients they had on hand. One night, with leftover feta, red onion, and homemade tzatziki in the fridge, they created a Mediterranean omelet that became a menu favorite.

Full Circle’s cocktail menu is just carefully planned. While living in Kansas City, Tanner moonlit as a bartender, which developed his appreciation for cocktails that are both creative and approachable. One of the most distinctive drinks is the Caprese Martini, made with goat cheese-infused gin, tomato cordial, basil eau de vie, and honey chrysanthemum liqueur. “We didn’t want to stop at breakfast,” Tanner shares. “If we were going to make this a space for locals, we needed to offer something different in the evenings too.”

The name “Full Circle” is apt. Years ago, Tanner lived in an apartment above Hunam, never imagining he’d someday return as an owner. Michael, Cameron, and Tanner had each explored other paths after college, but returned to build something new for the Manhattan community. For them, the business truly did come full circle.

From the beginning, the trio was clear about their vision for the restaurant. They wanted to make a hub for the community, not just another bar or student hangout spot. “We wanted to create

a space for locals, for professionals, for people who wanted a different kind of Aggieville experience,” Tanner said. While students are welcome, the restaurant deliberately appeals to graduate students, professionals, and long-term residents who might otherwise feel crowded out by the Aggieville bar scene. The restaurant’s regulars range from recent K-State graduates grabbing cocktails to couples in their forties or fifties who come in weekly for brunch.

Over time, Full Circle has fulfilled the owners’ vision for a community hub. On the weekends, patrons can enjoy live music, customers are often greeted by name, and the has staff built genuine relationships with regulars. For the founders, that connection is the ultimate manifestation of their long-held dream. “We’re not a corporation, we’re not a franchise,” Tanner said. “We’re just three people who wanted to give something back to this town.”

The ultimate wing guide: Manhattan City Lifestyle staff reveal their favorite local spots for crispy, spicy, and unforgettable wings.

Manhattan’s Best Wings

ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE | SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Years ago, I read a travel blog claiming to know the “Best Chicken Wings in America,” and I thought it would be fun to try a few while traveling. Over time, I’ve sampled some of the country’s finest: Pok Pok in Portland, Oregon, The Sweetwater Tavern in downtown Detroit, the original Buffalo wings at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, and of course, The Peanut in Kansas City.

But no matter how far I roam, my cravings always come home. There’s just something about the wings in the Little Apple. Maybe it’s the perfect crunch I find at my favorite Aggieville spots. Maybe it’s the sweet-heat at a local bar where the staff knows your name before you finish walking in. Maybe it’s sharing a platter with friends after a K-State game, where every bite feels like a victory. I’ll continue to chase “the best” wings across the country, but the very best are truly right here.

Here are Manhattan’s Best Wings as chosen by the staff of Manhattan City Lifestyle, without any particular order:

AGGIEVILLE BREWING COMPANY

Aggieville Brewing Company has taken wings to an art form. Each wing starts its journey smoked over white oak at 260º for two hours, infusing a subtle, smoky depth that sets the stage for flavor. After their slow smoke, the wings are finished with a crisp, golden fry in rich beef tallow, creating a perfect balance of tender interior and crunchy exterior. From there, the real fun begins with Aggieville’s housemade sauces. Their classic buffalo packs a spicy, tangy punch, while the BBQ sauce hits that perfect sweet-and-smoky note. But the showstopper is the Tiger Wings, a sticky-sweet glaze combining hot sauce and brown sugar that earned them the title of 2025 Wing Wars champions. For wing lovers in Manhattan, Aggieville Brewing Company is a destination. 612 Pillsbury Dr.

There’s just something about the wings in our own backyard.”

RC MCGRAW’S BAR & GRILL

McGraw’s Bar & Grill has made wing night legendary in Manhattan, but don’t worry if you can’t make it on a Tuesday or Thursday—they’re available any day. Each wing is carefully seasoned and baked to lock in flavor and juiciness. After baking, the wings are refrigerated, then fried to order, ensuring a perfectly crisp exterior with tender, flavorful meat inside. From there, the sky’s the limit with sauces. Classic fans can go mild or hot with Buffalo, or enjoy the sweet-savory balance of Spicy or Honey BBQ. Adventurous eaters have options like Caribbean, Thai Sweet Chili, or Mango Habanero, while Garlic Parmesan adds a savory punch and Korean BBQ delivers a sticky, bold finish. With so many sauces and a flawless fry, RC McGraw’s wings are a playground for flavor seekers. Each bite is crafted to satisfy, whether you like them sweet, spicy, or somewhere in between. 2317 Tuttle Creek Blvd.

MOE’S ORIGINAL BBQ

Opened in 2020 and owned by Dave Alt, Moe’s Original BBQ has quickly made a name for its wings. Each wing starts with a brine of salt water and brown sugar, locking in juiciness before a slow, three-hour smoke at 200º infuses deep flavor. Once smoked, the wings are finished in the fryer, achieving a perfect balance of tender inside and crisp outside. Sauces elevate them even further: the house-made wing sauce is a classic favorite, while occasional jerk wings add a spicy twist. Their house-made BBQ sauce hits that smoky-sweet note every time. Then, there’s the  Alabama white sauce. This stuff is better than ranch or bleu cheese. It’s a blend of mayo, hot sauce, BBQ rub, lemon & sugar, and a creamy, tangy complement for all of Moe’s offerings. Moe’s wings earned top honors as the 2024 Wing Wars champions and are available for catering and tailgates. More than just BBQ, Moe’s wings are a must-try on the outskirts of Manhattan. 11855 Cassie Ln, St. George

“Manhattan’s wings are a flavor-packed adventure with each spot offering its own twist, making every bite a must-try for locals and visitors alike.”

MCCOOL’S BAR + KITCHEN

McCool’s Bar + Kitchen, opened in 2022 by Jeff Zerr and Casey McCool, has quickly become a go-to spot for wing enthusiasts. Freshness is the name of the game: wings are never frozen and are cooked to order in a fryer reserved exclusively for them, using seasoned oil for perfect flavor and crispiness. Daily, diners can choose from 20 flavors, plus a rotating weekly special, with inventive options like Flaming Hot Cheeto, Maple Bacon, Gator Glaze, Gangnam Style, and Hot Yaki, keeping taste buds intrigued. McCool’s also caters to bulk tailgate orders and offers delivery via DoorDash. Midweek perks include 75¢ wings on Wednesdays with $5 Busch Light pitchers, making it a local favorite for both flavor and value. Wing lovers can join the free Wing Club, sampling all 20 wings plus five rotating specials to earn a t-shirt. At McCool’s, wings aren’t just food. They’re an experience, a weekly ritual, and a playground of bold, inventive flavors. 710 N. Manhattan Ave. Aggieville.

SUNNY’S BULGOGI HOUSE

Near the gates of Fort Riley, Sunny’s Bulgogi House in Ogden brings Korean-style wings with a deeply personal touch. The story starts with the family’s roots. Originally a barbershop in Junction City, the owners opened the Sunny’s Family Salon in Ogden in 2012 and expanded into their culinary venture next door in 2014. Every wing is crafted with care, following family recipes or original takes, reflecting cooks who are serious about their craft and always exploring ways to improve. The wings are your choice of sweet or hot, with each delivering a vibrant punch of flavor without any dredge or flour, letting the quality of the meat shine. While “Bulgogi” literally means “fired beef,” Sunny’s expands the concept to chicken and pork, giving diners a taste of Korea with a Kansas twist. At Sunny’s, wings are a family tradition, a labor of love, and a continually evolving culinary experiment that keeps customers coming back for more. 308 Riley Ave. Ogden

TALLGRASS TAPHOUSE

Tallgrass Taphouse serves wings that are as bold and flavorful as their taps. Their Korean Fried Chicken Wings are twice-fried to achieve the perfect crunch, then tossed in a sticky soy-chile glaze and finished with toasted sesame seeds, fresh scallions, and served with a side of creamy gochujang ranch. The result is a harmonious balance of sweet, spicy, and umami flavors that hits every bite. For those craving a classic, the Buffalo Fried Chicken Wings don’t disappoint. Also twice-fried for maximum crispness, they’re coated in the Tap House Buffalo Sauce and served with tangy bleu cheese, making each bite satisfyingly spicy and creamy. Whether you’re after adventurous Korean-inspired flavors or a traditional buffalo kick, Tallgrass Taphouse delivers wings that are perfectly cooked, flavor-packed, and ideal for pairing with a cold beer. These wings make it easy to see why the Taphouse is a favorite spot for wing lovers in Manhattan. 320 Poyntz Ave
