It's A Wondeful Life

It's a Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, a man who sacrifices his dreams for the good of his family and community. Facing financial ruin and questioning his worth, he’s shown by his guardian angel what the world would look like if he had never been born. Through this journey, George discovers the profound impact he’s made, realizing his life has been rich with love, friendship, and purpose. This classic resonates deeply during Christmas, as it reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can ripple through a community, enriching the lives of those around us.

In the Little Apple, this message finds its roots. Known for its close-knit, generous spirit, Manhattan embraces the Christmas season by fostering goodwill, charity, and community gatherings. Much like George’s story, the people of Manhattan uplift each other, bringing warmth and joy to the holidays.

Christmas in Manhattan is a great season of warmth, tradition, and community spirit. The Little Apple transforms into a festive wonderland. Families gather for annual events like the Festival of Lights at Blue Earth Plaza. Aggieville’s lights twinkle bright inside Auntie Mae’s Parlor and The Hi-Lo, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Local boutiques offer unique gifts, and the community comes together for charity drives and holiday markets. In Manhattan, Christmas is more than a holiday—it’s a time to celebrate togetherness and create cherished memories.

This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what MHK has to offer. Our local gift guide makes holiday shopping easier while supporting small businesses in our community. For those who feel like Clark Griswold in December, now is the time to start planning your pool! Then, of course, we bring back the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign. Throughout the years, my beloved parent company has given thousands of dollars to people in need. If you know someone who could truly use some help, scan the QR code and nominate someone. You never know whose life you could help change.

My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace, and that we all remember to take care of each other. After all, the world really is a much better place because you're here. It truly is a wonderful life!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Warm Regards,

December 2024

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

Winter Wishlist: Pool Edition. Why December is the ideal time to start planning your backyard pool with Energy Center-Manhattan Pool.

Mele Kalikimaka

ARTICLE BY COOPER DETERS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE | SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Remember that iconic scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation when Clark Griswold gazes out the window, envisioning the pool he’d always wanted? He gazed longingly out the window, dreaming of the perfect pool he plans to install with his holiday bonus. Imagining joyful summer scenes with family and friends, Clark’s vision is cut short by the reality of the frozen ground outside—and no bonus in hand. While he may have started with a Jelly of the Month Club membership, he eventually got his pool, and the dream scenario he’d imagined.

For those in the Little Apple, and this side of the nut house, Energy CenterManhattan Pool (ECMP) is the ultimate destination for pool design and installation, offering complete, customized solutions to create your ideal backyard oasis. Interestingly, many pool construction projects begin in December.

EMCP’s process typically begins with a site survey to determine the optimal pool location and identify any potential challenges. The team also discusses key considerations with clients, such as desired functionality and use.

The next step in the process is determining your timeline and budget. At ECMP, planning starts with your desired completion date. Unlike other companies, ECMP doesn’t prioritize clients based on budget; they prioritize commitment. Once the commitment is made for the project, the project is added to the queue.

Budgeting for a pool often involves more than people expect. Even with a rough budget in mind, costs can vary significantly depending on selected features and upgrades, making flexibility essential to bringing your dream pool to life. Any project can also be completed in phases, allowing for more manageable budgeting.

“We treat every pool as a custom pool. We help determine the size, style, and features that are right for the customer.” —Kimberly Weber

Once the budget and timeframe are set, ECMP helps bring your vision to life. The exciting part? Using photos of your backyard, they create 3D renderings of the space, complete with the pool. This allows you to see exactly how everything will look, with room for adjustments adding a diving board, slide, or other features.

In-ground swimming pools come in a variety of designs to suit any style or space. Rectangular pools provide a classic, elegant look ideal for lap swimming. Freeform designs mimic natural ponds, blending into lush landscapes. Infinity pools offer visual appeal, while geometric and kidney-shaped pools bring unique aesthetic flair to any backyard.

Another factor that varies from customer to customer is whether they want a turnkey solution. "Turnkey" means

handling everything, from landscaping to fencing and retaining walls. Some clients prefer them to manage it all and act as the general contractor, while others just need the pool installed.

Beyond pools, ECMP can also incorporate fireplaces, fire pits, and even kitchen islands into the design. Not only can they add these elements to your vision, but they also offer these products in-store, including grills and patio furniture. This flexibility is where project stages come into play, allowing for seamless integration of features over time.

If you want an island, they can get you swimming first and add it in another season when it’s right for you. It doesn’t all have to be done at once—you can build and grow your space as you go.

attention to detail, much like his father. However, Hayden has a broader vision, always thinking on a grander scale. He's constantly staying ahead of the curve, participating in forums and learning new techniques. Not afraid to reach out to larger builders for advice, he’s become certified in advanced, highly technical classes, embracing innovation without hesitation.

Once the pool is in place, some clients want ECMP to handle opening and closing it, while others request weekly maintenance to ensure the pool is properly balanced. It all depends on the individual and what suits their needs.

A few years after Brian and Kimberly Weber purchased ECMP in 2000, a customer reached out and asked them to build a pool. Despite never having built one before, they figured it out, and since then, EMCP has constructed countless pools in the area. “Brian has a map,” Kimberly Weber shares, “like those travel maps with pins, except his shows where we’ve built pools.”

Since then, their son Hayden has joined the business. He brings boundless energy and creativity, with a keen

In recent years, since Hayden became the primary foreman for pool builds, it’s been exciting to watch. His creativity has resulted in beautiful, functional masterpieces, elevating both design and functionality. He helps customers expand their vision, showing them the endless potential of what can be achieved. His influence has truly transformed the pools he’s been involved with, thanks to his bold, forward-thinking approach.

The future is bright at Energy Center-Manhattan Pool. With a new pool showroom coming soon, customers can look forward to an inspiring space showcasing top-quality pools and designs. This addition will make creating your dream pool easier than ever, so you can channel your inner Clark Griswold this December—no Jelly of the Month Club required!

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board. Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.
