In the vast tapestry of American cities, each with its unique charm and character, there's a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Flint Hills that stole my heart long ago – good ole Manhattan. The Little Apple possesses a distinctive allure that makes it an extraordinary place to call home. It really is A Spot That I Love Full Well.
One cannot help but be captivated by the warmth and friendliness of the people here. In a city where the sense of community is woven into the very fabric of everyday life, you're not just a resident; you're part of a tight-knit family. Whether it's at Bramlage Coliseum, the farmers' market, a Third Thursday downtown, over Lucha tacos, or strolling through Dillon’s, the sense of camaraderie here is palpable.
Manhattan's natural beauty itself is often overlooked. The breathtaking Flint Hills, with their rolling prairies and scenic vistas, provide a stunning backdrop to everyday life. A leisurely stroll through City Park, a canoe on the Kaw, or a bike ride along the Linear Trail offers a serene escape from the demands of modern living. Manhattan allows one to connect with nature, right in the heart of the city.
I know I can really romanticize this place, but I often reflect on the reasons I love calling Manhattan home. It is the perfect blend of community, natural beauty, and cultural richness that makes this city a special place. While we’re small enough that our entire town population could basically fit into Bill Snyder Family Stadium, it looms large in the hearts of those fortunate enough to savor its unique charms.
We truly feel like the lucky ones as we get to learn more and more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you. In your city, in your neighborhood, and most of all — in your home.
Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month that’s on the cover. They say they hold onto it forever as coffee table art, or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in Manhattan, and we strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Since 2013, Carpet Cleanse has put the customer experience first. The company’s journey from a small startup to a leading name locally in carpet cleaning demonstrates founder Jason Meysenburg’s commitment to his clients.
Jason’s venture into the world of carpet cleaning was inspired by his nine-year tenure in the restoration industry, where his passion for exceptional customer service was sparked. A native of Salina, KS, and an alumnus of Washburn University, Jason’s journey is not just a business venture but a personal one as well. Carpet Cleanse spun off from his father-in-law’s restoration business. Jason was encouraged every step of the way by his wife Beth, and this July, they will celebrate their 20th anniversary!
The initial challenge for Carpet Cleanse was maintaining steady business throughout the year. While property management companies kept the company busy from May to August during the moving periods for K-State students, the company experienced lowered demand off-season. However, Jason quickly realized that his focus on the customer experience was paying dividends in the form of repeat business. “We figured out that if we took care of people, they would take care of us, and we no longer really have a down season.”
Professional carpet cleaning is not just about aesthetics. Removing pollutants like dust, pet dander, and allergens improves indoor air quality and extends the life of carpets by preventing the breakdown of fibers caused by dirt accumulation. This process can also eliminate stains, mold, dust mites, and bedbugs. Moreover, it can address unpleasant odors, especially from pets, creating a fresher ambiance. Regular professional cleaning also maintains a carpet’s original color and texture. Overall, a clean carpet looks better, feels softer, and contributes to a more inviting environment.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOFFMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE | SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHYJason’s team has refined a comprehensive 12-point cleaning protocol. This begins with a thorough inspection and vacuuming to prepare the carpet. Small furniture is moved for unobstructed cleaning, and a spray and targeted spot treatments are applied to tackle stubborn stains. The carpet is then groomed, which loosens and lifts trapped dirt, pet hair, and debris, then it is deep cleaned using a truck-mounted hot water extraction system. After soil extraction, carpets are pH balanced to prevent any residue and maintain fabric integrity. The procedure concludes with post-spot treatments, grooming for optimal drying, and speed drying with high-velocity air movers. The Carpet Cleanse crew then completes a final walkthrough to ensure the highest standards of customer satisfaction and cleanliness are met.
In an industry often criticized for its chemical and water usage, Carpet Cleanse stands out by prioritizing green products and practices. Listening to customer concerns has been pivotal in providing services that not only clean but also ensure the safety and comfort of their homes.
Since its founding, Carpet Cleanse has embraced technological advancements, including cutting-edge scheduling software and cleaning equipment. This forward-thinking approach has kept them at the forefront of the industry, offering efficient and effective cleaning solutions.
Jason places a high value on customer service and communication skills in his team. “We can train someone to be a really good cleaner. The biggest focus for me is finding people who are customer service oriented with communication skills.”
“We take the invitation into your home very seriously.”
“ We figured out that if we took care of people, they would take care of us, and we no longer really have a down season.”
In addition to its Manhattan base, the Carpet Cleanse has broadened its reach to include Salina, Jason’s hometown. Looking forward, the company aims to expand its reach by adding locations and potentially developing a licensed franchise model. This ambition reflects Jason’s confidence in the company’s business model and his commitment to spreading their exceptional service standards.
Jason approaches his work with profound dedication and professionalism. Carpet Cleanse has built a reputation for trustworthiness and excellence, and he encourages potential clients to read the reviews from customers who have invited the company into their homes. “Jump online and see what real customers are saying about us. Talk to people who have used our services. We take the invitation into your home very seriously.”
The morning sun casts a warm glow over a Victorian home, illuminating the intricate details of the century-old architecture. High atop a sturdy ladder, armed with a paintbrush, a painter from C&C Painting & Remodeling stands ready. With meticulous care, the brush is dipped into a bucket of vibrant paint, ready to transform the exterior of the house into a masterpiece of color and charm.
As the brush sweeps across the surface, a fresh coat of paint emerges, covering imperfections with a smooth, even layer. Each stroke is deliberate and precise, as the painter methodically works their way around the house, breathing new life into its exterior.
Slowly but surely, the house begins to undergo a stunning transformation, evolving from dull and worn, to vibrant and inviting. The overall scene radiates a sense of transformation and rejuvenation. The fresh coat of paint radiates with fresh energy and charm. Ultimately, the finished project reveals yet another day of exceptional craftsmanship.
The tale of C&C Painting & Remodeling unfolds more than a decade ago in the Little Apple when Cameron Crocker arrived in Manhattan to pursue his education at K-State. Taking a hiatus from school during a summer break, the native of Colby, Kansas embraced an internship as a painting contractor. Growing up in a family that valued self-reliance and the ability to fix things independently, Cameron found a natural inclination toward painting.
As the internship progressed, it evolved into a platform for networking and referrals, expanding beyond painting to encompass handyman services. It dawned on Cameron that there was potential in this venture. With this realization, he reached out to his brother Cody, inviting him to join the journey.
With a commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction, the brothers leveraged their existing skills and industry knowledge to venture into the realm of home remodeling.
After taking a leap of faith, Cody moved to Manhattan from Hays, and the duo landed on the name C&C Painting, LLC. While they realized this new company had a ton of potential, they also knew they had a lot to learn. In their pursuit of self-improvement, they shadowed contractors across Wichita, Oklahoma City, and Nebraska. Through this experience, they gained valuable insight and knowledge from a diverse variety of industry professionals.
Like any entrepreneurial journey, the brothers faced challenges in the early days of C&C Painting. Securing initial clients, building a reputation, and establishing the business infrastructure required determination and hard work. However, the brothers remained undeterred, leveraging their creativity, work ethic, and commitment to delivering exceptional results.
The Crocker family’s dynamic has played a crucial role in the success of the company. Cameron, serving as the CEO, embodies the company’s personality and vision. Meanwhile, Cody, in the role of COO, showcases meticulous attention to detail, emphasizing the importance of image. With a reserved communication style, he lets actions speak louder than words. Then, completing a trio is their brother Chris, the CFO, who excels in financial management. This family dynamic, combined with the dedication of longstanding employees, underscores the genuine essence of a family-run business.
The company sets itself apart from competitors through a steadfast commitment
to a client-centric approach, referred to as “The Three Pillars”: Show Up and Show Out, Everything’s Better After You Show Up, and Big Picture, Small Details. From the beginning, their focus has been on these three fundamental principles grounded in communication, transparency, and collaboration with clients. This dedication has not only fostered trust, but has also played a pivotal role in cultivating an expanding community of satisfied customers who value the personalized touch that is consistently brought to every project.
With a commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction, the brothers leveraged their existing skills and industry knowledge to venture into the realm of home remodeling. This expansion not only broadened their service portfolio, but also positioned C&C Painting, now officially known as C&C Painting & Remodeling, as a one-stop destination for homeowners seeking both aesthetic enhancements and structural improvements for their properties.
The addition of home remodeling services allowed C&C Painting & Remodeling to address a wider range of projects, from minor renovations to major overhauls. The company could now undertake tasks such as kitchen and bathroom renovations, room additions, flooring installations, and other remodeling projects. The synergy between painting and remodeling services has enabled C&C Painting & Remodeling to seamlessly integrate these offerings, delivering clients a smooth and efficient experience from conceptualization to finalization.
As the family has expanded, so has the Crocker family, and with this growth, a new mission has emerged for the painting company. On December 14, Cameron’s son, Quinton Clive, arrived prematurely. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka cradled him for eight days, with his family navigating the uncertain journey. The Ronald McDonald House became their sanctuary, offering comfort and solace amid the beeping monitors. Grateful for the support, C&C has resolved to give back. In 2024, the company has pledged to donate $1 for every gallon of paint sold, with the goal of 10,000. They see this as a tribute to the resilience of premature babies, and a nod to the generosity that once enveloped them in Topeka’s Ronald McDonald House. Quinton’s story — a testament of love, hope, persistence, and community care — is a direct reflection of the company itself.
Through their dedication to quality craftsmanship, community engagement, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, the brothers transformed their artistic talents into a thriving business. C&C Painting & Remodeling stands as a shining example of how a vision, coupled with hard work, and a commitment to core values, can turn a small venture into a local success story.

“ I LOVE THIS PLACE! ”
“Best CBD shop in town and really in the whole area. These guys are complete professionals and are so well educated in what they sell that you are guaranteed to leave with exactly what you were looking for. Super clean and friendly environment. 10/10.”
“I mean, it’s a pretty weird job, but I love it,” Jamie Coones’ trademark laughter echoes through the room as he speaks. And why wouldn’t it? Quitting a six-figure, high-pressure sales job to move his family back to Manhattan and start a dog poop pickup service from scratch certainly requires a good sense of humor. “Life is tough enough; why not have some fun? I work outdoors, help people, pet dogs, and it has changed my family’s life for the better.” With 15 Poo Squad franchises now open across the country, it seems the fun is just beginning.
FROM MESS TO MARVELOUS: POO SQUAD TAKES ON DOGGY DEBRIS
It’s a simple business idea. Do something that people need but cannot or will not always do themselves. From busy parents to disabled veterans, Poo Squad is happy to provide the solution. Jaime launched the first location in Manhattan in 2017 with just a truck and a bucket. Initially, Jamie handled everything — finding and scheduling clients, scooping the yards, and managing the books, all with the significant support and patience of his wife, Ashley. She was the one who helped and believed in the idea when everyone else thought it was crazy.
If you’re going to do something others consider crazy, you better be willing to commit fully. For Jamie and his team, commitment is everything. “You can’t be afraid to be the ‘poop guy.’ You have to fully embrace it for it to work.” The proof is in the branding — all orange everything: shirts, hats, jackets, backpacks, signs. “It started as a safety point,” Jaime explains. “I wanted people to know exactly who was in their yard. Now, it’s just who we are.” This commitment to branding has succeeded, not just in Manhattan but across the country. The 15th location recently opened in New Haven, Connecticut, joining others in Kansas, Missouri, Texas, California, Ohio, and Kentucky, with more on the way. Poo Squad will soon scoop its 250,000th yard, marking an incredible journey in just seven years.
“I wanted people to know exactly who was in their yard. Now, it’s just who we are.”
The company’s success has allowed investments in two crucial areas: community and technology. Jamie, often spotted in the brand’s signature orange, has become a familiar face at community events in Manhattan, KS. From initiating the Manhattan Chili Cookoff to sponsoring Purple Power Animal Welfare Society pet adoption events, the team aims to have more fun than anyone else
while giving back. Jaime was named Young Trustee Volunteer of the Year in 2023, and this spirit of service is carried across all locations, which sponsor sports teams and has donated services to dog foster families. “We exist because people trust us with their homes. It’s part of our culture to give back and make our communities welcoming,” Jaime states.
Jamie’s software sales background has been instrumental in the company’s growth, employing advanced technology to streamline operations for clients and employees. This includes routing software, text reminders, and even a ‘poo report’ for clients to monitor their pet’s digestive health. Behind the scenes, ‘Poo Squad University’ provides video courses for new franchises and employee training.
Building the company hasn’t been without challenges, including Jamie’s severe bout with Covid. Thanks to friends, family, and robust technology, Poo Squad not only survived but thrived. “I wouldn’t be here without the prayers and support of my family and friends. I’m proud of what Poo Squad has done for my family and how it’s changing the lives of other franchise owners. Most of all, I’m proud that Poo Squad is from Manhattan, Kansas.”
Fox Home Innovations is celebrating 15 years in 2024
In 2008, Chris Fox found himself like many in the home construction and renovation industry: unemployed. Armed with construction skills, a business degree from K-State, and an entrepreneurial mindset, Chris was ready to forge his own path in the remodeling industry. A year later, he officially founded Fox Home Innovations and brought on his friend and fellow K-State graduate, Matt Carlson, as his business partner. Together, Chris and Matt envisioned a company that would break the mold, focusing on remodeling with a level of professionalism that was scarce in a market fixated on new construction. For the first few five years, Matt split his time between working at the Manhattan Fire Department and building the business. “Ten years ago this month, actually, I came to a fork in the road where I had to decide whether to resign [from the fire department],” says Matt.

Providing an unequaled client experience through clear communication, empathy, and meticulous attention to detail has been their guiding principle. They’ve fostered lasting relationships, treating each client’s project not just as a job, but as a pivotal investment in their lives.
