hose who know me well might think that the fact I like to eat and cook and enjoy a traditional roast turkey dinner (I’ll prepare it several times a year) is why I like Thanksgiving the best of all holidays. While this culinary preference might play a small role in my choice, the fact is I think it is very important to do a complete job of counting our blessings. When I went through a divorce and some choices about who would be with whom on certain holidays, I asked for Thanksgiving. My three children were and still are an incredible blessing. Regardless of what inevitable conflicts and troubles occur during the year, a formal coming together was important. If we handle our lives as well as we possibly can, there is always something special to be thankful for. My children are now grown, have families of their own and are spread all over the country and the world, making a ceremonial Thanksgiving dinner rarely possible. We still do our best, even if it’s only by Skype or Facetime. This year, our mutual communities and our country are in serious conflict. More so than at any time since the growing pains of the Civil Rights Movement and the pain of the Vietnam War tore at our society, many of us are focused on what’s wrong. Unfortunately, there is a lot that is wrong. Particularly the resurfacing of latent hatred and racism. There is also a refusal on the part of many of our nation’s “leaders” to do anything about it. Case in point is treating the suffering of our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico as an annoying inconvenience rather than a life and death responsibility. To help me enjoy this Thanksgiving season, I am going to focus on a good thing. A happy place. An example of what is exceptionally good about the communities in which I work and live. The Conejo Valley, Malibu and Pacific Palisades are unquestionably affluent. However, that affluence does not equate to self-centered and selfish. The opposite is true. The level of support for nonprofits as diverse as the American Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Clubs, PathPoint, the Westminster Free Clinic, the Conejo Compassion Coalition and Big Brothers Big Sisters, to name just a few, never ceases to amaze me. Recently, in one evening, about $150,000 was raised for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County. WOW!! Time to say, “Thank You!”

Making Friends at the 5th Annual Armenian Family Picnic

Each year, some 130 Armenian families of Malibu gather on the beach for an annual picnic to meet and greet and enjoy an Armenian feast, dancing and laughing. “Bringing everybody together to meet and make friends is so much fun!” says host Ani Dermenjian of Coldwell Banker, Malibu Colony.

Pictures shown are from 2016; this year's picnic was held after the publication deadline.

ocean,” says Alexandra Power, development director. A Walk On Water serves L.A., Ventura, Orange, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and San Diego counties, as well as East Coast locations. The charitable endeavor is open to all, and “gladly welcomes anyone who has special needs or disability, or could benefit from surf therapy,” Power says.

“I knew it would be nearly impossible to get a wetsuit on him,” Agatha recalls. “He was kicking, hitting and screaming the whole time. But with help from the very patient wetsuit staff; it took five of them…we got it on him.” When Mason was placed on a surfboard, he was put in the care of Pat Notaro, who Wallen refers to as an “expert surfer/autism child whisperer.”

Over the years, volunteers have witnessed numerous positive changes in the athletes they serve, including altered behavior, “going from scared, unsure and even combative to calm, happy and laughing,” Power notes. Athletes also tend to improve their focus in other aspects of life, thanks to surf therapy. For instance, “parents report their child shows improved effort and results in the classroom,” Power says. Strength and stability is also honed. “Many athletes who attend multiple events show an improved ability to stand up and balance on the surfboard, and it has translated to improved motor skills and walking. Some of the athletes have even advanced to being able to catch and surf their own waves,” Power says. A Walk On Water was inspired by a group of watermen’s desire to dispel the stigma of surfing as a solitary, non-inclusive sport. Born

“As my tantrum child was being paddled off out to sea, in a hail of cheer and applause from everyone around, I could see him transform,” Wallen remembers. “My son became calmer as they moved with the water. I saw his body relax as he stretched out on the long surfboard. My child regained his composure and started to participate.”

out of a common goal to bring the powerful physical and emotional benefits of surfing to those in need, the nonprofit was founded in the summer of 2012 on the west side of Los Angeles.

In addition, American Luxury Limousine provides complimentary chauffeur service to veterans from the Wings over Wendy’s club, driving them to the event in style, where students from the Pepperdine Ambassador Council greet and escort them down the aisle to their seats. Mr. Stark’s 1943 Army Jeep is an event mainstay, providing photo ops for the audience, as are Victoria Netanel’s miniature therapy horses that travel around to hospitals and provide healing for veteran patients. Rick is also a pioneer and visionary. After being encouraged to explore the potential of Santa Barbara as a wine region by the famed Andre Tchelistcheff, Rick saw the future. He said he felt Santa Barbara County had the potential to produce world-class wines. It became his passion over the past 30+ years and he is honored to have his wines contribute to the area’s acclaim. Longoria Fa Ciega Vineyard Pinot Noir has consistently scored 90+ points. The 2013 scored a 93 in Wine Enthusiast as did the Bien Nacido Block N. Rick has also mentored many winemakers who followed him, sharing his knowledge and dedication to producing the best wines. This locally-owned business prides itself on “super simply prepared” food made with mostly wheat flours and whole grains, veggies and fruits. Items served directly from the farm include eggs, persimmons, figs, lemons, pomegranates, apricots, Asian pears, carrots, beets, asparagus and fresh herbs. Malibu Farms also buys items, such as strawberries, oranges, kale, chard, basil and tomatoes, from farmer Larry Thorne of the Thorne Family Farm; and potatoes and carrots from Weiser Farms. All arugula and lettuces come from Maggie’s Farm.
