Home Is Where the Art Is... WE HAVE LIVED IN WESTLAKE VILLAGE SINCE 2004. As the years have passed, when it came down to easy access to performing arts and entertainment, we have found ourselves increasingly challenged by traffic on the 101. Anytime we wanted to go to Los Angeles for theater, music, museums, dining, sports or shopping, it was difficult. An evening of world-class jazz at the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood often included an overnight stay at a nearby hotel. Ridiculous if you consider the fact that Hollywood is only 30 miles away. Not ridiculous if you want to enjoy yourself and avoid a two-hour crawl into Hollywood. Bottom line is that we do not go that often anymore. Unfortunately, I no longer get to see Tierney Sutton, Arturo Sandoval or other jazz artists I so very much enjoy. I don’t remember the last time I was at the Hollywood Bowl, the Music Center or the Pantages. Too bad, since I love musical theater, ballet and much of what those fine venues have to offer. Rather than continue complaining, it’s time to live and enjoy life locally. The Conejo Valley, Malibu and Pacific Palisades, the communities we serve with our Lifestyle magazines, have a

In upcoming events, guest speaker Roksana Pirouzmand, who graduated from the California Institute of Arts in Fine Arts, will show slides of her paintings, sculptures and performance art from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Pacific Palisades Woman's Club, 901 Haverford Avenue. Others include Judith Carr, who uses a brush and palette knife to create daring acrylic paintings on canvas; Laura McCormac, who sculpts mainly the medium-hard alabaster stone so she can use a hammer and chisel, files and sandpaper for a more organic experience than the use of power tools; and Chris Alexakis, who is experienced in logo, packaging, poster, animation and cinematography design.

ANNUAL ART SHOW The Art Association’s yearly efforts include the Annual Pacific Palisades Village Green Art Show and Sale, which has been beneficial over the years by placing artists in the center of town for a day. “The event brings attention to the general public of our existence and encourages people to take part in our community, whether it be joining as a member or sharing their art,” Dugdale-Alexakis says. Fundraising is also a part of the Art Association’s mission and is conducted through membership dues for $55 at PaliArt.org. Members

may attend special guest lectures and demonstrations from renowned artists, gallery chairs and museum curators from throughout the Los Angeles area. Members also have an opportunity to showcase their art in collaborative shows at a discounted price for a year. Membership fees go toward paying for guest speakers, demonstrations, website maintenance, rent and liability insurance. The public is welcome to make donations to the Art Association to help fund grants to young aspiring artists at Pacific Palisades Charter High School. “Every year we try to make sure we have enough money to donate a small scholarship to the Pacific Palisades Charter High School art students,” Dugdale-Alexakis says. “The scholarship and art shows are incentives for members to join so that we may continue bringing local art free to the public.” The Art Association has been running for close to 70 years, and today has approximately 55 active members. “We are always looking for more,” Dugdale-Alexakis says. “People may join and are welcome regardless of age, gender and where they reside.” The ultimate goal of the Palisades Art Association is to encourage the community and offer tools and knowledge—regardless

Pepperdine University’s Creative Writing Department Chair Dr. John Struleoff, an Esteemed Writing Fellow of the National Endowment of the Arts and the Wallace Stegner Program at Stanford University. Ybarra’s post takes him to local schools, where he enjoys sharing his love of poetry with students. “Meeting students and other artists, not just poets,” are perks of Ybarra’s post he finds especially rewarding. “My ‘post’ speaks and honors all the arts and everyone involved because everyone has a creative spark,” adds the 6th generation Californian. “I am very proud to be a 6th generation Californio on my Mexican Ybarra side of the family,” says Ybarra, who grew up in Echo Park/Silver Lake, which he describes as a “fascinating childhood and neighborhood.” Ybarra, who started writing poems in his 30s, finds inspiration for his writing in relationships and everyday events. He says his favorite topics to write about are “things I don’t understand or know too well.” Ybarra found a mentor in renowned SoCal poet Benjamin Saltman and names several poets among his favorites, including Neruda, Wanda Coleman, Sandra Cisneros, Uncle Walt and Wooi-chin J-son. When it comes to offering advice for aspiring poets, Ybarra says keeping in mind that “not every poem works” is a good rule of thumb. And as for writer’s block? “Love writer’s block,” he laughs. Bonds: Should I Stay or Do I Go? ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN
THEIR PROMISE TO RAISE INTEREST RATES, THE OLD AXIOM “WHEN RATES RISE, BOND PRICES FALL” PUTS INVESTORS IN A PRECARIOUS SITUATION. The question, “Should I retain bonds in the portfolio or sell them because they’ll lose value?” has merit and highlights a reasonable concern that follows the right train of thought. However, while the world of investing fits many descriptions, it most certainly is never characterized as black or white. First, a quick reminder on what a bond is and how it works. A bond is essentially an investment whereby you loan money for a specified period of time and earn interest for making that loan. Money is typically loaned to a government (i.e., the United States), a municipality (like the County of Los Angeles), or to a corporation (ranging from Amazon to Viacom). And, you, the investor, are paid interest each year for the loan you made. At maturity of the loan, you’re then repaid the Face Value of the bond. For a quick illustration, let’s say you buy a Face Value $100,000 bond issued by Amazon, with a 3% coupon (interest payment) that matures in 10 years. Amazon pays you $3,000 every year for the next 10 years, and in the 10th year they repay you the $100,000 you loaned them. But, what if interest rates go up to 4%? Now, if Amazon wants to borrow money, they pay new bond buyers 4% (or $4,000 yearly) on a $100,000 loan. You can see that if rates go up, and you own the 3%-paying bond and you want to sell the bond, investors will pay you less to buy that position because they can get a bond that pays 4%— why would they want yours only paying 3%? The challenge is that when you only consider the example above, you’ll likely be running from bonds in a rising rate environment. But, if you take other investment elements into consideration, you may evaluate your situation and find bonds can still be a complement to a successful investing strategy. Bonds provide diversification from stocks and real estate—think of “not keeping all your eggs in one basket” if you were to trip and fall. Meaning, if the stock market or real estate market were to decline in value, then you would have greater total portfolio safety by being diversified and owning different types of assets. Please note that diversification does not guarantee against a loss. Also, for retirees and other long-term investors, you may have bond positions that pay higher rates of

Self-Love DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE YOU ARE ALWAYS PUTTING YOUR-
SELF LAST ON YOUR OWN LIST? Well, I’m right there with you. There are some people who put themselves first in everything they do and only think for themselves first. Some may think this is selfish, while others see it as a form of self-love. In order to truly be happy, it is important to incorporate some form of selflove into our lives. However, some of us might not know how to love ourselves, how to receive love or even how to accept compliments. This is a great time of the year to learn how to not only love yourself, but also how to love and appreciate the important people in your life. I have many tips for you all to practice self-love while also showing your love and appreciation for others. You can start doing this by admiring others for their inner beauty and noticing their reactions. Also, make an effort to find out what others’ perceptions of giving are in regard to showing their love for others. You may find out that some people in your life really have a flair for it! The next step you can take is to find a mentor you admire and have them teach you something you want to get better at in life. Start your days by putting a zip in your step, as this could be the change you’ve been needing to make that will lead you to living your best life. In your everyday life, is your automatic response to things usually a positive loving one, or would you consider it negative criticism? If you start to voice your daily responses with compassionate feelings, you will definitely see positive changes in your relationships with those around you. Counting your blessings is another great place to start on the path to self-love. Do you have dreams and goals? Or, are you someone who always thinks that having dreams and goals are not worth it? Well, I am here today to say that your dreams and goals are very important, and you are so worth it. Chasing your own dreams and goals is a great form of showing self-love, as it will make you feel more accomplished once you start reaching for your dreams and goals. We all need to learn to be our own best friends and cheerleaders in life and know in our hearts that we are worth it. When we work with others from a heartfelt place, we not only gain our own power back, but we also take away any negative feelings that may be holding us back. Always remember to help others in life, especially when you start reaching your own personal goals. Don't forget to turn around and help the next person in line in your life. Always stay humble, be kind and be good to others. Most importantly, don’t forget to always love yourself. Happy Valentine’s Day!
