Giving Praise and Thanks

Another year around the sun, and here we are back to our November issue, which marks our 6th anniversary and coincidently is always our “thankful” issue.

This year has been so incredible for the magazine. We are so thankful for all of the feedback you have provided. I never get tired of hearing “Loveland Lifestyle goes right on my coffee table!” It’s an honor to come into your homes every month. I have to take some time to thank some very important people. Loveland Lifestyle is not a one-woman show (I would never sleep). It takes a whole team. I have to say a big thanks to my editor, Steph Meinberg. She has been with me for all 6 years, and I am so thankful for her. I think it goes without saying that our writers are also thankful for her. She truly works to learn each writers’ strengths—by getting to know them . She loves her team and makes sure they know that.

Many of you know Courtney Kramer—you can often find her posting about Loveland on her Instagram page, @pathsidevibes. She has worn many hats when it comes to the magazine. This year she has taken on a marketing role. She makes sure we are reaching readers through a new newsletter, events and sponsorships. She makes me go the extra mile, and for that, I am extremely grateful.

Kelsie Ruoff is our newest team member and has already made a big impact. She took over our social media pages and has been taking us to the next level with more videos, tracking, Loveland school posts, etc. She is so organized, I am in awe of her. Whatever I send her—she finds a place. Thank you for joining our team. We wouldn’t have a magazine to print if it weren’t for our fantastic team of writers and photographers. I love reviewing each and every article and photo gallery that comes across my desk. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

Partners, some of you have been with me all 6 years, too. But whether one year in or six, thank you for helping us grow and serve our community. I am so grateful for each of you. You believed in us and the impact we could make. Thank you so much for all of your support.

We can’t wait to see what year 7 brings!

Though the season may be changing… Sundance has you covered.

When we say it’s the perfect addition to your deck, we mean it – and we aren’t just talking about during the summer. Yes, the motorized louvers effortlessly allow you to control how much natural light you let in, but why stop there?

Winter chill in the air – heat lamps can be added for extra warmth.

Night falling sooner – add lights to enjoy your deck well into the evening.

Snow falling – close the louvers on your Sundance roof for a snow-free patio.

Smaller back deck – Sundance pergolas can fit any size home.

It’s the most cost-effective way to achieve the three-season room you’ve always wanted.

Savers Heating & Cooling Believes in a Higher Degree of Giving Back

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A common question for the young that not many can say became reality. But Doug Hyrne can. It began in high school, when Doug went to Great Oaks for heating and air conditioning. Then he was an apprentice, then service technician, then started his own business in 2005—Time Savers Heating & Cooling LLC, which recently moved to Wards Corner near I-275.

In the time-honored tradition of many entrepreneurs, Time Savers was born in Doug’s garage. At the time, he was in North College Hill, but even then, he and his wife had their eyes set on Loveland.

“We wanted to move to Loveland because it was a great community with good schools,” Doug recalls.

So in 2008, three years after he launched Time Savers, Doug set up shop on LovelandMadeira Road. Since then, as Loveland grew, so did Time Savers—along with Doug’s family. Nowadays, Doug and his wife play a very active role in supporting those schools that first drew them to the community.

“It was always the goal that as the kids grew up and were in sports and different activities, I would use the business to have fun with them,” Doug explains.

For Doug, that fun began with a Loveland Youth Football sponsorship, where he eventually became a board member. One of his first projects was building a new press box, and Doug took a very hands-on approach—literally. His handprints, along with those of his two sons, Jacob and Leelan, are pressed into the concrete floor.

Doug’s kind of an expert at volunteering. He’s coached both of his sons in Loveland Youth Football. He coaches for the Loveland Youth Baseball Organization (which Time Savers sponsors) and Loveland Youth Basketball. Time Savers also became the first corporate sponsor of the Loveland Music Boosters. Been to the Loveland July 4th parade over the past two years? You’ve probably seen a Time Savers service van roll by. The dunking booth at Milford Frontier Days—fun brought to you by Time Savers, along with the Splash/Cool Zone. The annual (always sold-out) Milford-Miami Township Chocolate Walk— yep, a Time Savers event. They even collected 1,000 pounds of household batteries during Loveland’s One Stop Drop to keep them out of landfill. The list of giving back goes on.

“I really believe in helping when you can,” admits Doug, smiling.

Amid all this giving back, Doug and his family have found a community of support in return—which meant so much when Jacob, now 14, needed open-heart surgery at just 11. It was his last year of Loveland Youth Football, and would have to sit it out.

“He was really disappointed about that,” recalls Doug. “But the league put his number on the sleeve of all their jerseys that year.”

The players also put Jacob’s number on their wristbands and shoe tape. Jacob played offense, so to show their support, Loveland High School’s offensive linemen came to a party in Jacob’s honor. He even got to break out the LHS football team at their first home game that season.

For a man who’s been in the heating and air conditioning business since high school, it’s this kind of support and love for his family that truly really warms his heart—an abundance of gratitude all around.

pre-season checklist: timely furnace tips

As a long-time expert in the biz of helping others, thankfully Doug has some recos to help get your furnace or heat pump ready for the winter season.

1. Make sure the filter is clean. Air flow is extremely important for heating and cooling systems.

2. Keep your registers open and don’t block vents.

3. Make sure windows are sealed and don’t let cold air in.

4. Give your furnace some breathing room; don’t put anything in front of or around it.

5. Get a professional tune-up! Just like a car, your heating and air system needs regular maintenance.

VFW 5354 BRANCH HILL POST HAS BECOME A COMMUNITY CENTER

PHOTOGRAPHY

Ask this former Army soldier if he prefers Christian Gonzalez or Chris Gonzalez. He’ll say he’d rather you call him Gonzo.

Not an homage to an odd-nosed purple Muppet, but to journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

“If you’re a fan, you’ll understand,” he laughs. Which probably means there’s some crazy stories in Gonzo’s past. And there’s the dilemma with many military veterans—there are the fun crazy stories from a liberty weekend, but then there are the serious crazy stories from a war deployment. Two different adventures, but both not to be shared with just anyone.

He understands the importance of veteran spaces where former military can congregate to share experiences, compare stories, learn from each other. Maybe laugh. Maybe even cry.

Gonzo found camaraderie after active duty with a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post. But two years ago, he met a group of veterans from Loveland’s VFW 5354 Branch Hill Post who needed help. The Vietnamera vets had recently handed over the reins to the younger generation, who were slowly starting to make much-needed improvements.

For Gonzo, helping the young vets recharge a post with an entire gross revenue of $29,000 seemed like a perfect opportunity to involve his nonprofit organization, NXTStep Vets.

NXTStep Vets helps unemployed veterans find their purpose to thrive. Through its mental, spiritual, mentorship and career path pillars, NXTStep Vets hopes veterans can translate passions and purpose into financial freedom.

Gonzo realized improving the post’s physical grounds and mentoring the young members could showcase NXTStep Vets’ good work.

“We could make it profitable. And not just profitable, but where we’re actually investing money into the organization, improving our grounds, and giving back to the community,” he explains

One of the first decisions was to greatly expand the activities on the post property.

“We’re not a bar. We’re a community center.”

“We’re not a bar. We’re a community center.”

In an age where traditional social clubs like the Elks or Moose Lodges have lost membership, Gonzo realized that the new adult generation wanted something different than simply a place to escape and throw a few drinks back.

“Today, 20 and 30-year-olds have a different focus in their household. They want to spend more time with their families.”

CONTINUED >

Christian Gonzalez (Gonzo)

VFW 5354 now hosts fishing derbies at its one-and-ahalf-acre pond, and is home to dart tournaments, target shoots, football Sundays, bingo nights, live music and more. In fact, the post currently boasts the fastest-growing VFW membership in Ohio.

But new activities alone have not been the only reason for its success. Gonzo knew that—though having a veteran space to share personal stories is important. To improve mental health and a sense of usefulness, military veterans must integrate with their civilian communities.

“Everything that we’ve been doing since we moved forward is open to the public.”

Through social media, its website, and word of mouth, VFW 5354 has become a popular hangout in Loveland, where the civilian attendees have outnumbered the veteran attendees.

And that’s just fine with the veteran members. The members are the owners and operators. They decide and vote on its future—how money will be spent, how grounds will be improved, how the post will give back to the surrounding community. Ideas by all members are welcome. Majority vote rules.

Its current gross revenue is $416,000. And at least 25% of earnings are designated to charities.

More important than revenue has been the community connection.

“The canteen is open to all—as well as events on our grounds. Now the public understands who we are and what we are.” And during this month where we honor our military veterans and give thanks for their service, that relationship is what it’s all about.

Gallery Veronique Thankful to Be Celebrating a Milestone of Art Appreciation, Exhibition and Contribution

Over the past 30 years, Gallery Veronique has become a go-to staple for beautifying your home. With an assortment of art to adorn your walls, this little gallery packs a big impact—and its owner has made many friends along the way. When talking to Veronique Hammons about her gallery, it’s easy to see why she’s stayed in business and made lasting relationships in and around the area. Her down-to-earth attitude immediately charms, and her dedication to the community of Loveland is infectious—both signature traits to be thankful for. “The relationships we built with our customers contribute to the success of the gallery,” Veronique insists. “It’s happened so many times that my customers became my friends. We have drinks, we have dinner. You can’t avoid it after three decades!”

Veronique at the beginning of her art career, with Cynthia Baker

“We’re not a shop where people come in and out in 30 seconds,” she says. “They don’t buy something and leave. We get to know each other. I’m listening to what they like, I hear stories about their families and their tragedies—and they hear about mine.”

Veronique bought her gallery in 1995 when it was a frame shop. And while they still do frames, art is more up their alley these days. “My favorite part of my business is going to customers’ homes, helping them find the right piece.”

Veronique will also help clients find better placement for already-owned works, or help them decide what art best suits their space. She encourages everyone to look at art, to find what they like, and to train their own eye so they can truly appreciate their own pieces.

Over the years, Veronique has worked to make her shop more accessible to all. From school art shows to hosting private events, her gallery is a place everyone in Loveland (and beyond!) can feel at home. “We’re trying to be inclusive in the community,” she promises. She also regularly assists with HOMEARAMA® décor, installing her own pieces into each year’s designer homes to really make them shine.

Congratulations on your pearl anniversary, Gallery Veronique, and here’s to many more!

RETHINKING A RENOVATION AFTER A DIAGNOSIS SENT ONE FAMILY’S PLANS DOWN THE DRAIN

ARTICLE BY KATHY DOANE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS

In 2019, Mason residents Jan and Neil Lewis (then in their early 60s) had come to some conclusions. Both had worked in the U.K. and the U.S. Jan had retired in 2017 after various finance positions. Neil was seriously talking retirement after four decades as a career P&Ger. Their two daughters were grown and established.

The conversation became, “Should we downsize and move to a smaller house?”

After running the numbers and taking stock of how much they loved their home, their neighbors and the area, Jan and Neil decided to stay put but make some changes to their house.

In March 2020, their plans drastically changed when the pandemic brought life to a screeching halt. Neil, a microbiologist, delayed retirement to work in P&G’s COVID testing lab. The house renovation was moved to the back burner. Then their lives got even more complicated.

“My hands had started shaking,” Neil says. “In April of 2021, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.” In Oct. 2022, Neil finally retired. Still, it would take another year and a half to re-plan and get the renovation back underway.

“We knew we had three big projects to do: the master bathroom, the kitchen, and replacing the carpeting with wood flooring,” Neil explains. The bathroom was the logical place to start to accommodate the limitations posed by Parkinson’s that Neil was already experiencing. The next question: Who would do the job?

Enter John Wood, owner of Bath Inspirations in Loveland. “He had redone the bathroom of friends here in Mason,” Jan says. “They spoke so highly of him— and he did an excellent job.”

“I went to their home for about an hour, listened to their wants, their needs and goals,” John remembers. “We established a budget.”

CONTINUED >

“This is a unique business because I have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives when they need help.”

Neil and Jan admit their original ideas centered around merely improving what they had. “We thought about just refreshing the shower and putting in new vanities,” Jan says.

“At that point, I hadn’t proactively thought about how my limitations might increase,” Neil adds. “But once John started talking about things we could do, ideas began popping into our heads.” They agreed on a plan of action.

“I gave them a line-by-line breakdown of costs, because it’s important that people see exactly what they’re paying for,” John says.

And, according to Jan, the original budget didn’t change. “There were no surprises,” she says.

John and crew started by removing a soaker tub and creating a curb-free shower with a bench at the opposite end of the room from its former location. “We’ve lived here 21 years, and I think we used that tub three times,” Jan says, laughing.

The six-week renovation included new walls, non-slip floors, vanities and making sure there was space to maneuver should Neil need a walker or wheelchair. The new design included plenty of grab bars, including towel bars that serve double duty.

Still, the centerpiece of the Lewises’ new bathroom is the computerized, tankless VOVO bidet toilet. It automatically opens, closes and flushes; can thoroughly clean and dry the user in addition to itself; has a heated seat, LED lights, and a detachable control pad for manual operation as well. Those amenities might sound like pure luxury, but they will allow Neil to maintain an independence in the bathroom that most of us take for granted.

“Truly, the projects that give me the most satisfaction are ones like Neil and Jan whose lives have been upended, and they need someone to come in and help them,” John says.

“From the beginning, he gave us the impression he wanted the best for us and instilled the confidence he would deliver,” Neil says.

Such confidence, as a matter of fact, that John and his crew have recently begun the next phase of the Lewis house renovation this fall—laying new floors and starting the kitchen remodel. Updates that are sure to be as inspiring—and gratefully appreciated—as the rest.

Prose and Plants

ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER

Thankfully, The Perfect Pairing Now in Historic Loveland

Peanut butter and jelly, chips and salsa, milk and cookies—some things just go better together. But what about books and plants? Well, that’s a match made in heaven you’ll see for yourself once you step inside Bike Trail Books and The Split Leaf Co. store now in downtown Loveland.  This unique shop combines the charm of a local bookshop with the freshness of a plant store, offering visitors a warm and inviting atmosphere. Walls lined with crisp, new books coexist with vibrant greenery, creating a cozy environment for book lovers and plant enthusiasts alike.

Brooke Hathaway DeSantis, Loveland resident and owner of Bike Trail Books, started her business in 2023 out of a desire to bring a locally owned bookshop to Loveland. “I always thought to myself, ‘Loveland needs a bookstore,’” she smiles. “It was an idea that I couldn’t get out of my head.” Initially operating in a smaller space above Hometown Café, Brooke soon realized she needed more room to grow. Inspired by a similar concept she encountered while traveling, Brooke proposed the idea of co-retailing to Samantha Watts, owner of The Split Leaf Co. Sam, who previously ran her plant business from the Morrow Arts Center, was immediately on board. The partnership allowed them to share rent, increase visibility, and create a larger space for workshops and events. “I loved the idea of books and plants together,” Brooke explains. “But I needed to find the right fit—when I met Sam, we immediately hit it off.”

Sam started The Split Leaf Co. in 2020 after leaving the military with a brain injury and PTSD. Before getting more hands-on with greenery, she admits she killed every plant she owned. Determined to move forward, she found working with plants calmed her anxiety. The company was born out of her passion for succulents, and then grew into all things houseplants. “I love that this new venture satisfies people’s passion for plants and books,” says Sam. “It’s been the best decision. Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.”

Brooke and Samantha
“We provide a welcome respite for those who want to feel a book, pick out the perfect plant, or browse slowly—instead of just clicking ‘add to cart.’”

- Brooke

Now Sam and Brooke share their passion and knowledge by interacting with customers, holding workshops, and providing one-on-one experiences. “We’re a neighborhood store that offers a level of customer service that just can’t be found online,” Brooke says. “We provide a welcome respite for those who want to feel a book, pick out the perfect plant, or browse slowly—instead of just clicking ‘add to cart.’”

Since opening in August, the store has become a bustling community hub. Bike Trail Books exclusively sells new books in various genres for all ages, and hosts seven different book clubs a month. The bright and cheery children’s corner gives even the littlest readers something to explore, with weekly story times on Tuesdays and Saturdays. They also host special events such as Princess Story Time, Yoga in the Bookstore, overnight reading retreats—and this month, a talk and book-signing with local

bestselling author, Jessica Strawser, on November 11. For its part, The Split Leaf Co. offers customers a curated selection of plants, succulents, and hand-crafted arrangements, along with hands-on events to get creative like container painting, and succulent and moss wall workshops.

With the holidays just around the corner, this dynamic duo is sure to have something for every voracious reader and aspiring plant purveyor, including a Moss Holiday Wreath class and a Succulent Christmas Tree workshop, as well as Read with Santa, which includes a wrapped book from the jolly man himself. In addition, there will be extra store magic during Loveland’s tree lighting and Christmas in Loveland.

New State-of-the-Art Showroom Spotlights Latest Lighting and Plumbing Considerations

For over a decade, Lighting (one) of Cincinnati has been Greater Cincinnati’s go-to for chic lighting solutions and stylish home goods. Today, a reimagined, state-of-the-art showroom now includes the best in plumbing with iconic brands Kohler, Moen, Gerber and InSinkerator— displays that allow the staff of kitchen and bath experts to better serve builders, contractors and retail customers.

“You’ve known us the last 12 years,” says Matthew Streuer, facility operations manager, pointing to a proud reputation for customer service, design and selection.

“Now, we can extend that same great service and curated selections with plumbing in our newly renovated luxury showroom.”

Can’t-Miss Showroom Features

• Look up! The lighting designs on display go beyond function, bringing stylish considerations to any space—without breaking the bank.

• Kohler displays allow shoppers to customize fixtures with an

array of faucets and handles—and rethink what it means to keep clean.

• See the Kohler Anthem Shower—a working display that lets guests explore Anthem’s new line of smart shower technology.

The showroom is now known as Lighting & Plumbing (One) of Cincinnati—but they’ve updated so much more than just their name.

Stepping inside, guests are treated to what very well might be their most illuminating home goods experience yet. Stylish, tufted leather sofas provide an opportunity to reflect on a myriad of designs, from functional bath basics to jaw-dropping artistic lighting. It’s the perfect blend of modern and classic—including displays from the new Studio McGee collection (crafted by Kohler), reflecting quality craftsmanship and timeless style.

The best part? They also offer a professional roster of in-house design consultants adept at working with individuals to help make home builds and remodeling projects sparkle.

Together, this new Lighting & Plumbing (One) of Cincinnati is a one-stop-shop that’s been curated, Matthew says, “to welcome the builder, designer and architect community—as well as homeowners and DIY enthusiasts alike.”

Surprise and Delight This Season with Savory, Showy Focaccia

Need a show-stopper to “wow” at holiday gatherings?

Stephanie Amlung creates deliciously beautiful baked goods from her home baking biz, A Charmingly Sweet Life—her decorative focaccia bread is a fall fave.

ingredients:

• 16 oz warm water (110°F)

• 7 grams active dry yeast

• 1 tbsp sugar

• 24 oz bread flour

• 6 oz olive oil, divided

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• 1 tbsp flaky sea salt

• Fresh herbs, veggies & meats

directions:

Mix 8 oz warm water with yeast and sugar. Set aside for 5 minutes or until yeast becomes bubbly. Place yeast mixture in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. Add 8 oz of flour, mix on low until combined. Add remaining water, 2 oz olive oil, kosher salt and half the remaining flour; mix on low until combined. Continue adding flour with mixer running on low until dough pulls away from the sides; dough will be very soft.

Knead dough for about 10 minutes or until it bounces back when lightly pressed. Transfer dough into a greased bowl, cover tightly, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, until dough has doubled in size.

Pour enough olive oil into a 12x17 sheet pan to cover the bottom with a thin layer. Coat hands with olive oil before handing dough; it will be very loose. Lay dough in pan and begin stretching. If it shrinks, let rest for 15 minutes before stretching again. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. Before baking, remove dough from fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 450ºF. Dimple dough surface with oiled fingers, then drizzle olive oil across the top until all dimples have oil in them. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and decorate with herbs, veggies and/or meats; brush with more olive oil to prevent burning. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden.

» Brush for two minutes, two times a day.

» Brush and floss for your child until age 7 – longer if needed.

» Floss daily between teeth that are touching. Start as soon as teeth come in.

» Replace a toothbrush when it shows signs of wear or recovering from an illness.

» Don’t use any fluoride-containing mouthwashes on children younger than 6.
