Making A Difference

One of the reasons I love publishing this magazine is because I get to encounter amazing people who are bringing positive change to their community. This issue is a prime example of that.

Over the last year, I have received emails from a variety of local kids and teens who wish to share their talents, ideas, progress and products with our readers. So naturally, we had to publish a story about them. The best part is, no two individuals are focusing on the same thing. I am amazed at the drive and ambition these kids have, and I know you will be, too.

Of course, I have to mention our cover story ... Louie, and his person Danise, who are spreading a message of love and acceptance through their books and in-school programs. To date, they have visited numerous schools and students with their Unleash Love program.

Lastly, I want to make sure and mention our photographer, Matt Capps, and his latest project. He put down his camera (just a for a second) and collaborated with his wife and son to publish multiple books ... books that focus on what his son, Garrett, loves. Books that strengthened their family bond even more. Books that are meant to be shared and enjoyed.

We hope you enjoy this issue. We are so lucky to have so many kind and caring people in our community.

This Year, Enjoy Being Outdoors a Whole Lot More

A Sundance all-season pergola is one of the best, most cost-effective ways to achieve the covered deck or patio you’ve been dreaming of. But don’t just take our word for it.

“We loved the design and engineering. Every component of this system is first class. They did a great job designing and installing our pergola. I’d recommend it 100%.” - Wayne

“The versatility of the louvers being able to open and close—that was an important aspect for us. We didn’t want to get an awning that blocked out the sun and nothing could get in. We wanted to have the flexibility where we can open the louvers and let some sun in or close when the rain comes.” - Cheryl

Young Community Members Impress— and Inspire

Loveland Wunderkinds

With a spark and a dream, many of Loveland’s youth among us are learning at an early age how to harness and develop remarkable talents. Now, the world outside of the immediate community is starting to take notice—putting these talented individuals on the map.

Abigail Boyle Publishing Powerhouse

At just 15, Abigail has already published three books: Alex’s Adventures, A Fox’s Tail , and A Fox’s Journey (available on Amazon).

“I’ve always wanted to write books for others,” she says. “I wrote my first book when I was 7 years old. I enjoy participating in book events and writing workshops for young authors—to encourage creativity among writers of all ages.”

Abigail hopes to one day be a famous author, known “not only for my books, but also my passion for inspiring others.”

“I want my books to be my legacy—a way for me to leave my mark on the world.”

Jordan Friend Entrepreneurial

Drive

“I have a very entrepreneurial mindset,” 13-year-old Jordan reports. An understatement—considering he used that mindset to launch a business from his favorite catchphrase, “cool beans.”

After dreaming up and drawing out a huge array of “Cool Beanz” characters, Jordan connected with manufacturers, built a website— then launched (and marketed) his own line of apparel.

“I think I was just born with an entrepreneurial drive, but I really developed that by learning as much as I could and just getting out there, getting out of my comfort zone—even if the zone was quite big,” he says. “I see next steps for me going forward ... to continue to learn and grow my business.”

Fiona Johnson Design on Demand

“Because of my business, I’m constantly meeting new people,” says 15-year-old Fiona. “It’s nice to know my artwork might make someone’s home a little more beautiful.”

Just last year, Fiona began creating one-of-a-kind ink drawings for friends’ and neighbors’ homes and other spots that held significance—like churches where couples were married.

Word spread fast—Fiona now does hand-drawn greeting cards, selling them at shops (like Busy Bee Boutique). “I might even try craft fairs, create an online presence—the possibilities are endless. Not only am I learning entrepreneurial skills, I’m also saving money for my college education and travel dreams!”

Evagoras Papasavvas Full Speed Ahead

“I’ve always loved cars,” smiles the 17-year-old driver.

When he was around 6 years old, Evagoras’s father got him hooked on go-karts. “I loved it,” he says. “And I just knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

Today, Evagoras participates in INDY NXT, a driver development racing series owned by INDYCAR—considered a pathway for drivers aspiring to compete in the INDYCAR Series (its centerpiece attraction being the iconic Indianapolis 500).

“The plan is to do this partial season to gain funding to be able to compete in a full season of INDY NXT,” Evagoras explains of his future plans, noting that participation in the program can cost about $1.4 million per season. “We really want to gather all the support from my own Loveland community ... that’s what all of this year is about.”

“I started competitive go-karting when I was 7, then got my first time in a full-size race car around 13,” he says. “I’ve been in race cars ever since.”

“Now I’m almost there … I’m almost at INDYCAR,” Evagoras says, excited. “We’re close.”

Stella Rose Crist Wildlife (and YouTube) Dynamo

With 100,000+ views on her YouTube channel, “Stella Rose Knows,” Loveland 2nd grader Stella Rose already knows a thing or two about capturing the spotlight.

“I’m 7 years old and absolutely love nature,” she says. “Flipping rocks on the hunt for snakes, catching cicadas, cruising down the river in my kayak—I feel most at home in the great outdoors.”

Stella Rose invites you to follow her adventures “learning everything I can about animals from wildlife experts of all kinds.” And wisdom? That, too. “The confidence I’ve gained over the past few years is something I’ll have for the rest of my life.”

HOW ONE LITTLE-LEGGED POOCH IS INSPIRING KIDS TO BE BETTER HUMAN BEINGS

ON THE NOSE

September 15, 2013. It’s a date that Danise DiStasi will never forget. She certainly hadn’t expected anything special to happen that day. She’d only entered the store on a whim.

“LOUIE

“He started jumping on my bed … growling and snapping at me,” she remembers. Danise briefly considered returning him, but there was something in those big brown eyes that made her reconsider.

HAS TAUGHT ME THAT EVERYONE ON THIS EARTH WANTS TO BE KNOWN AND LOVED.”

She walked around inside for a few minutes … and that’s when it happened. Louie sat quietly, a calm, somewhat sad presence amid a storm of activity and noise. His big brown eyes locked with her big brown eyes, and the world shifted for them both. She knew without hesitation that he would be going home with her that day.

It’s probably a good time for a few more details.

The store was the PetSmart in Deerfield Township. Louie was a CorgiBeagle mix barely out of puppyhood. He’d been rescued from a shelter in Kentucky and fostered for a time before ending up at the PetSmart. “I had dogs all my life … my last one had died about a year earlier,” Danise says. “I thought my granddaughters, Evi and Mea, would enjoy having a dog around.”

Once Danise and Louie got home, however, the honeymoon was over.

“I made the conscious decision to love him in spite of his challenging behavior.” She also hired a trainer to teach Louie some “good dog” basics. In the process, Danise, whose job was teaching corporate leadership skills, picked up some new skills herself … from the dog trainer. “He told me I’d been letting Louie run the show—it was time I became the Alpha dog,” she says, laughing. “Not in a mean, aggressive way—but by being calm, controlled and consistent.” Within a couple of weeks, Louie made an amazing transformation. And Danise began to see a greater purpose for what was happening between them.

As the lessons on living with each other kept coming, Danise was encouraged to write about them—so she started a blog. “People loved it,” she recalls. Eventually, that led to putting those lessons into books.

The first was Lead Like Louie, aimed at adults, followed by Love Like Louie for middle schoolers. Then began a series of children’s books for pre-K–3rd grade, casting Louie and his short Corgi-like legs as the lead character.

“Louie’s Little Legs” books include lessons in patience, hope, kindness, and the joy of Christmas. A new one, Louie’s Little Legs and the Power of Trust, is currently in the works. Her granddaughters (Evi now 17, Mea 13) serve as unofficial editors. “They are brutally honest. If they like an idea, I know other kids will, too.”

In 2021, Danise formed Unleash Love, a nonprofit that partners with several organizations—including The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League, Adopt A Class, and City Gospel Mission—to get her books into the hands of as many kids as possible,  free of charge. To date, Danise has done 41 author visits to area schools.

“I hope we have some part in teaching children—and adults—that love is being kind, patient, hopeful, trustworthy and persevering through tough times.”

“The feedback from teachers has been amazing—we ask them to fill out an impact survey,” she says. “There’s also a QR code in the books for parents to respond.” In fact, 93% of teachers say they’ve seen improvement in character development and a 75% improvement in literacy.

“Louie has taught me that everyone on this earth wants to be known and loved,” Danise says. Although Louie, at 13, doesn’t do school visits with her any longer, the stories he inspires remain front and center.

One of the main goals is to help eradicate bullying. “I hope we have some part in teaching children—and adults—that love is being kind, patient, hopeful, trustworthy and persevering through tough times.”

Does it work? Just ask Louie.

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Looking for an epic adventure to close out the summer (or plan for next)? Look no further than the sparkling, brand-new Universal Epic Universe, the latest theme park opened by Universal in Orlando, Florida. Loveland’s own Renee Gorman with Magical Moments Vacations had the privilege to preview this awesome new spot in April, and she gave us the scoop on just how magical of an experience this park truly is.

Located on the Universal Campus, Universal Epic Universe is only a bus ride away from the three other

parks. “They haven’t opened a new theme park in Orlando in more than 25 years,” Renee says, excited.

So this new park is kind of a big deal. What makes it so special? A lot. Instead of relying on 3D glasses and screens, this park has “more traditional theme park rides with amazing animatronics and new technology,” Renee explains. It’s made up of five different “worlds”—all of which are accessed through “portals”—The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ Ministry of Magic™, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™, How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, and Celestial Park.

Stories and Characters Come to Life at Universal’s Newest Theme Park

“When you go into each portal, you’re actually immersed into each individual land. You can’t see the other lands from the one you’re in, so you’re really pulled into the moment,” Renee explains of just how captivating this park is.

While you could cover it all in one day, Renee suggests planning for two—to really see everything, to fully enjoy the park. All of the worlds contain different experiences, from food and shopping to themed rides and character meet-and-greets. “The rides are great, the food is great. The whole park is just really well done,” Renee promises of a trip to Universal Epic Universe.

UniversalOrlando.com/web/en/us/theme-parks/epic-universe | magicalmomentsvacations.com/agents/renee-gorman

OK, LET’S GO!

Want to know what not to miss at Epic? These are Renee’s faves from her trip!

• “The most exceptional meet-and-greet I had was with Toothless and Hiccup in the Isle of Berk. Toothless is an animatronic, but a very realistic one!”

• And the best food in the park? Renee suggests the Mac and Cheese Cones from Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel, also located in Isle of Berk. “They’re super instagrammable … so much fun to eat!”

• As far as rides go, Renee suggests Stardust Racers. “It’s the best coaster I’ve ever been on,” she exclaims. She also recommends Mine-Cart Madness in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders in the Isle of Berk!

Springboard to Success

A Hometown Game-Changer for Students with ADHD & Learning Disabilities

Springer Diagnostic Center Director Molly Bernosky visits with Fiona

By the time Molly and Erick Blenk contacted Springer Diagnostic Center, they already suspected that their daughter Fiona had dyslexia. The tipping point ... they saw their 8-year-old’s confidence taking a nosedive. But within 6 short weeks of help at the Center, Fiona had a diagnosis, a personalized action plan, a team of advocates—and a smile on her face.

Under the leadership of Director Molly Bernosky, Springer Diagnostic Center opened in 2023 as a nonprofit offering psychoeducational evaluations for students aged 5–18. The community’s need was clear—Springer had fielded countless requests before the expansion.

“Springer decided we could broaden the scope of how we’re servicing the community by adding the Diagnostic Center,” Bernosky says.

Art is Fiona’s favorite subject at Springer—pink is her signature color

While the Center is adjacent to Springer School, it’s not a pipeline to it—their services are available for students in any school district.

“This process is all about meeting the individual needs of each family and child,” she explains.

While a traditional path to an ADHD or learning disability diagnosis can be long and winding, Springer offers a short wait for a collaborative, comprehensive diagnosis—all available under one roof. Offering a team of three psychologists with more than 45 years of combined experience, plus on-staff occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists, they’re focused on creating a personalized plan for each family.

“You don’t have to make separate appointments with the Department of Speech Language Pathology, then the Department of OT, then the Department of Psych ... we’re a one-stop shop,” Bernosky explains.

“Our assessments are multi-method, multisource,” she adds. “Including standardized assessments, observations, rating scales and interviews. We get the child’s voice, the parents’ voices, the school’s voice—all the relevant people.”

After gathering this cross-section of information, they conduct testing sessions, followed by feedback meetings.

“From initial consult to feedback, it typically takes between 4 and 7 weeks ... we don’t want you waiting forever to get results,” Bernosky says.

The Center advocates for each child and will also accompany families to school meetings to help relay the newfound information.

“It’s a lot of information—it can be like drinking water out of a fire hose to get this report about your child,” she adds.

The Blenks were pleasantly surprised at how quickly they were able to get Fiona into the Center. More important, they felt heard and understood throughout the process.

“Every child has individual, unique talents … and Springer is about discovering what they are.” - Erick

“The whole Springer approach aligned with our philosophy as parents wanting to understand our child as an individual—and help her be the best version of that,” Erick shares.

“From other sources, we might hear there’s something ‘wrong’ with our kid,” agrees Molly. “But Molly [Bernosky] helped us learn about dyslexia—teaching us this is a great gift, that the way Fiona learns is super cool. With Springer’s help, we’ve learned the language of how dyslexia works.”

“The sooner you understand what your child needs, the better opportunity you have to help them grow,” Erick adds.

Although they didn’t expect to, the Blenks transferred Fiona to Springer School. With a diagnosis and learning plan, Fiona’s bubbly spirit is back—she’s excited about school, an eager and curious learner.

“Springer has literally been a game-changer for Fiona’s learning,” Molly smiles.

“Art is my favorite!” Fiona chimes in with a smile of her own.

STORIES FOR Garrett

From Snapshots to Children’s Books, Creating Connections for All

You may know Matthew J. Capps as the guy behind the lens … snapping cover shots, capturing community events, bringing stories to life for Loveland Lifestyle magazine. The longtime photog genius behind our annual fashion shoot, dog star and so much more. But when the cameras are off, Matt and his wife, Kaytee, have found a new creative outlet: writing children’s books made especially for their neurodivergent son, Garrett.

“Garrett had been nonverbal for most of his life … he taught himself to read and type,” Matt explains. “We’ve been trying to get Garrett into reading books, but he hasn’t been very interested. So we decided to write some that we thought he’d be interested in … and so far, he seems to really like them.”

Under the whimsical pseudonym Audrey Anders, the couple has published three children’s books, each filled with playful language, bright visuals and subjects close to Garrett’s heart—letters, colors, sounds. Matt writes and illustrates, while Kaytee keeps the creative train on track.

Photography has been Matt’s passion since he was 6 years old; he made it his full-time career in 2019. But writing, he says with a grin, taps into a different kind of creativity. “I find myself writing whenever an idea pops into my head, usually in the middle of the night.”

Their stories brim with alliteration and rhyme, and Matt hints that similes and metaphors are coming soon, woven into the next round of books to come. “Sometimes you gotta get a little creative to meet your child’s needs,” he adds.

For the Capps family, storytelling isn’t just about reading—it’s about reaching, connecting and celebrating the unique ways each child sees the world. And helping other kids and families do the same.

Summer’s winding down … with family vacays, kid camps and endless pool days accomplished. Need inspiration for one more outing? An original plan for the long weekends ahead? It’s never the wrong time to explore the wealth of museums practically in our own backyard. Whether you hope to experience local history, inspiring artists or cultural artifacts, options abound throughout Cincinnati and Dayton.

AMERICAN SIGN MUSEUM CARILLON HISTORICAL PARK

www.AmericanSignMuseum.org

The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood is on a mission to celebrate the rich history of American signage through preservation and education … not to mention stunning visuals and master craftsmanship. “Signs and sign-making are a fascinating reflection of America through the years,” offers Tod Swormstedt, founder and curator. “If your experience at the American Sign Museum causes you to be more aware of signs in your travels and of their value to businesses and communities, then we’ve done our job,” This season, enjoy 45-minute guided tours every weekend, plus neon demonstrations every Saturday. Every 4th Saturday, learn the art of sign-crafting, and explore the skills needed to become an expert sign-maker. All are included with general admission.

Dayton History’s Carillon Historical Park museum complex opened in 1950 to showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements and Dayton’s unique contributions to world progress. This beautiful 65-acre campus was designed by the Olmsted Brothers (the same landscape architects of NYC’s Central Park) and contains dozens of museum buildings and countless artifacts. Plan your visits around Deeds Carillon Concerts in August and September, or explore special events like the Antique Fire Apparatus Show on August 30. For an extra special experience, attend their signature event, Dayton’s Concours d’Elegance, on September 13 … featuring nearly 200 antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles, it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see some of the finest vehicles in the country.
