Changing It Up
Change is a good thing! That message kept hitting home as I read and reread each article in this issue. All of the business owners featured in this issue embrace growth, embrace change ... and I have to say, it’s paid off.
Prime example—Brian Maxson owner of Railway Barber Shop. He made some big changes while we were working on his article. He closed his doors for a week and when he finally switched his sign back to “open,” a third barber chair had been added, some décor changes had been made, and a new sign hung over the front door.
Or take John Hill of John Hill Construction. From building larger homes for growing families to adding an addition or two, he is in the business of change. His business has been growing and changing with the expansion of his own team, which his son and son-in-law are both part of.
Lastly, I can’t forget Chris Castleman. Where one person might see a tired, faded, old tennis court, Chris saw possibilities. Pickleball, basketball, chess, shuffleboard ... whatever game you prefer, Chris’s company Cincinnati Sportscapes can build it over your old court. Now that’s a gamechanger, literally!
Congrats, gentlemen, on a job well done—and good luck as you continue to grow and change!

A happy client is a wonderful thing! A happy client who calls us back to complete another new home project because they were so pleased with our previous work … well, that makes our day!
After we corrected a botched job done by another company, our new clients were so impressed they felt they could trust us with their dream project—an outdoor living space that had the “WOW” factor.
So, we built them a showstopper—a radiused (curved) corner of the deck that accents their landscaping below. Holmes is one of few contractors with the technology to create a curved corner.
Their dream list also included:
- Replacing their existing deck, railing and stairs with Trex Island Mist decking.

- A gorgeous screened-in overbuild where they can relax and enjoy nature with skylights, and a covered walkway from their home to get them there.
- Creating a useable space under the deck with Trex Rain Escapes and a catio (patio for cats = catio).
- Adding a drive-in shed for the riding lawn mower, complete with concrete ramp and Hardie siding.
The result? Clients who are over the moon and can’t wait to host a neighborhood get-together!

You Can Grow Your Own Way
Count on John Hill Construction, Generation After Generation ARTICLE BY NICOLE BROWNING | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPSYour home is so much more than just a house—it’s a place for your family to gather, a place to feel safe and comfortable. When it comes to construction and remodeling, you want someone you can trust with your space, someone within your community who has your best interests at heart, and can grow with you and your family. Enter John Hill Construction, a home-grown Loveland custom home builder and remodeler. He’s your guy. He and his team.
It’s easy to see how dedicated and devoted John Hill is to the city of Loveland. One of 11, born and raised on a parcel of land that was home to not only all of his siblings, but also cows, chickens and sometimes pigs, John’s own brothers played a leading role in his construction beginnings. “Looking back, what got me into the industry was one of my brothers and my brother-in-law—two of the finest carpenters in the region,” smiles John. “I
was the little brother that ran around behind them. I wouldn’t have had the good start I had if it weren’t for my older siblings.”
No surprise, after finding a home in construction from his own family, John has passed the torch on to his own son, bringing in a new generation to advance the business. Up until his son Benjamin started, John’s construction company had been a one-man show. “Ben had always been a hard-working laborer for me in the summers, but his junior year of college, he wasn’t quite sure where he wanted to go next.”
The next logical step, when Ben expressed an interest in the family business, was bringing him onboard. Now, they’re not only father and son, but business partners—Benjamin has proved himself to be someone whom John can hand the reins to when the time comes to step back. There’s more—John’s son-in-law, Adam Arnett, has also joined the team, making it a full family biz.

But John’s growth isn’t limited to his own family. As his clients’ needs expanded, he’s proven time and again that his company is the one for the job. John estimates that 1 in 5 clients are repeat customers. “We’re currently finishing a home for a client building their dream home. We also built their starter home, the house where they raised their kids, 18 years ago,” explaining that this family’s story isn’t out of the ordinary. “We have a lot of clients where we’ve done work for parents, then we’ve done work for their kids. We were there for them, and there again for their children when the time came to work on their children’s homes.”

In truly fated fashion, maybe one of the sweetest builds John has done was back on that parcel of land where he grew up—a new couple purchased the land from his family in 2008. “We built a home for them in what used to be the field for the cows,” he laughs, and it didn’t end there. “Later came a finished basement, followed a few years later by a detached barn, and finally a few years ago, a carriage house. They’ve loved and cared for that property in a way that makes me proud.”
Whether being asked to return for an addition on a previous build or to refinish a basement, John Hill and his team pride themselves on always bringing phenomenal, reliable work to the table. “The trust that’s given to us by people—with their homes—we take that very seriously. We take it to heart,” John states candidly. “And when we’re asked back, that means the world to us. That’s really what’s key to us.”

what to pack in your pack when you hit the trail, the river, the woods

advantage HOME COURT
Chris Castleman loves bringing people together—whether to play a quick game of basketball or pickleball, or relax on a personal putting green.
“We see people of all ages and backgrounds being active together,” he proudly shares. “People whose paths might not have crossed, had they not been on one of our courts playing together.”
“It’s pretty special.”
Chris and his Cincinnati Sportscapes team specialize in creating, maintaining and transforming existing outdoor play areas for both home and public enjoyment.
In fact, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen some of his handiwork. “We’ve done jobs for Dayton VA Medical Center and Summit Hills Country Club. We have a big court in Loveland at Arrowhead Trails, along the bike trail,” he says. Cincinnati Sportscapes also showcased its work at the Cincinnati Home + Garden Show, and were part of Loveland’s HOMEARAMA at ChimneyRidge in 2022.
“ I was in the hardscape and landscape business for about 20 years, and have worked on a lot of outdoor living spaces and patios,” he says. “And that’s where it transitioned.” After having a project in mind for his own home about eight years ago, Chris learned about VersaCourt, an organization that custom-creates play area components—Chris quickly became an exclusive dealer.
“We pride ourselves on working directly with all of our clients, from beginning to end,” Chris says. “We’re excited to offer our revamping and creative services throughout Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Indiana.”
All courts are custom-produced, and take about 4–6 weeks to be prepared. That timeframe allows Chris and his team to be on-site, taking care of prepwork and planning. “It’s a seamless process,” he explains. “From the time we first meet until the first game is ready.”
Cincinnati Sportscapes is able to accommodate both large and small requests, from hundredsquare-foot spaces to projects totalling thousands of square feet.
Feeling up for a life-size chess match? Chris can make it happen.
“We get a lot of requests to update existing, old double tennis courts, which have become underutilized,” he says. “We come in, totally revamp it, and retrofit for any number of additional sports—hopscotch, basketball, putting greens, pickleball …”
At the end of the day, what really matters to Chris and his team is providing friends and neighbors with a safe place to play, relax and enjoy life to its fullest.
“Our work really brings communities together— it encourages people to shut off their electronic devices, go outside, and have fun!”
POPULAR REQUESTS? THINK BIG.
Cincinnati Sportscapes offers unlimited potential when it comes to setting up sports and play areas.
PICKLEBALL COURTS

“The minimum recommended space for a pickleball court is 24' x 54'—and the ideal size would be 30' x 60',” Chris says. “The latter size also accommodates multi-sport play, and can include halfcourt basketball regulation game lines.”
CUSTOMIZED COURTS
“People ask us, ‘We have a small yard but still want to play. What are our options?’ We fully customize and tailor each court to your specific needs—when it comes to size, color and design, all our courts are custom-made for the available space.”
UPGRADED TENNIS COURTS
“We can design a new court to be installed over an existing surface,” Chris says. “We bring any old court back to life with a lifespan four times that of a typical court space.”

BEYOND THE COURT
“Some want a backyard that incorporates both court and landscaping—our in-house team can completely transform that space.”

BANKSY OR BARBER?
Railway Barber Shop Will Blow Your Mind—and Deliver a Great Cut to Boot

While giving a good cut is the passion of Railway Barber Shop owner Brian Maxson, fascination (awe?) is the first thing most clients feel when they walk into this newly renovated Loveland landmark, branded (of course) by the quintessential barber pole. Come crack open a craft beer, play Nintendo, marvel at the art (even on the ceiling)—truth, you’ll want to just hang out.
Opening up shop was somewhat fate for this tenured barber, who had spent nearly 20 years of his career in Mariemont.
“A customer of mine in Loveland told me the barber he normally went to just closed—the same day the rent sign went up, I signed the lease,” Brian remembers, quickly making the shop his own with refinished floors (carpet, begone), adding his signature character, flair, and most recently, a third chair, a new sign.
“This was my dream location—I really wanted to open a barbershop in the community I live in. It sounds cliché, but it feels like I’m living the dream.”
Clients likely feel the same—that they’re dreaming the moment they step through the door. The once-traditional shop is now styled with graffiti, plants, Maxson’s own woodwork, mirrors, movie art, more. It’s classic but modern. Approachable but cool.
But as awesome as the vibe is, the most important part? The cuts. These flows and fades are popular styles that all-age guys are rockin’ right now …

• “ The Joe Burrow is a fave—they just call it ‘The Joe.’” ’Cuz who wouldn’t want to look like the next Tom Brady?
• “Skin fades are always huge—that’s where it’s skinned out on the sides and blended into about an inch of hair on the top.”
• “The third is … I don’t know what it’s called, I need to think of a name for it. You know what, we’re naming it right now!”
Brian laughs. “ The Loveland Flip —kids go shorter on the
sides and the back, but long on the top and front, then brush it down and kind of curl it up.” Reference? TikTok.
• Last, but not least, “ Mullets! Mullets are hot. Cincinnati is a sports town, so if you pay attention to how some athletes wear their hair, you can bet within about a month, boys will have their hair just like that. The mullet started here in the U.S., went to Europe, and came full-circle back—now it’s more of a mix between mullet and mohawk.” European soccer stars lead, mullet-style. NHL skaters boast “flow.” But even baseball and football pros like Gardner Minshew have made the “Mississippi Mudflap” super cool to sport.
Appointments are encouraged (bookable online)—come for a cut, steamed towels, a hot lather, but stay for the music, free beer and barbershop banter.

FINEST
ARTICLE BY J.M. GREENONE MAN, MANY MEATS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAILEY BOLLINGERI don’t consider myself a barbecue aficionado, especially around these parts, but I do love meat. And the recent honors bestowed on Loveland’s Midwest Best BBQ and Creamery were all the motivation I needed to sample its menu of meats. First, in December 2021, Esquire plucked “The Best Wing Spot” in every state and declared Midwest Best BBQ the Ohio pick for its “smoked then fried wings.”
In March, Yelp devised its own algorithm to announce its list of the “Best BBQ Restaurant in Every State.” Midwest Best wins again.

It began when Midwest first launched with a small shop in Camp Dennison in April 2013.
“We had steady growth there, and knew in order to really reach our potential, we needed more space,” owner Nicole Worsham says. “In September 2018 we opened in Loveland and have been blessed with continued growth.”
The restaurant is contemporary, tucked in a corner off I-275 and Wards Corner Road.
The interior, unassuming—a couple of bigscreens on sports channels; some Cincinnati sports memorabilia on the walls that I only hope is growing. With garage doors leading to their patio area, I just know on a summer afternoon this place is bumpin’.
After some careful discernment, I order at the counter and find a table strategically located where I can watch both TVs, the counter and the kitchen entrance. One thing I learn from my lookout—Midwest Best’s pick-up business is insane. The server charged with carryout duty is never not walking back and forth between the kitchen and counter. Her legs are marathon-ready. Her biceps bulge.
I start with Tater Skins—my appetizer—and choose chicken as my meat. In hindsight, why didn’t I choose the bacon? Nothing wrong with chicken, but for some reason I passed on the applewood-smoked bacon and now I feel embarrassed. What I don’t regret is choosing the Simply Sweet sauce. If Cincinnatians love anything, they love their sauces sweet.
The tangy, cheesy, savory skins were a taste bud burst. I scraped the cheese off the basket’s paper like a savage. And then I discovered how they paired with the Creamy Slaw.
Usually, I toss my slaw into the salad category—it’s rabbit food. To quote my favorite Parks and Recreation character Ron Swanson, “It’s food my food eats.” However, the Slaw was the side dish I didn’t know I needed. Cool, creamy, slightly tart—it was the perfect complement to the barbecue.
The MB Combo (with pulled pork slider, beef brisket slider and wings) was my entrée. At this point in my dining experience, I had to return to the counter and request more sweet sauce. Wish granted.
OHIO’S HONORED BBQ SPOT, MIDWEST BEST, AT ITS LIP-SMACKIN’
“We started as a barbecue sauce and rub company in 2009 after my husband created a barbecue sauce that his coworkers and friends couldn’t get enough of,” Nicole smiles.

The two promoted the sauce in meat markets and Jungle Jim's.
“We started participating in local festivals using our sauce on our smoked meats,” Nicole says. “People were more excited about the meats than the sauce!”
I get it. The pork is lean and definitely cooked slowly over low heat. But still, after two bites, I take the rest of the slider and shove it into the sweet sauce container.
Before I can take my first bite of the brisket, the cook comes out and asks me how I like my meal. The entire staff is friendly. (And there goes that young lady again with the carryout bags. Back and forth. Back and forth.) I always want to say I love brisket. Seems manly. Like what I need to eat after a day spent herding cattle at the Yellowstone Ranch. Truth be told, I find brisket too fatty. Not at Midwest—their brisket is already my clear favorite, and my only regret is not ordering the full brisket sandwich.
But on to the wings with the House Buffalo sauce. The secret seasonings in Midwest’s dry rub are “locked-in-a-vault-worthy”—ever so lightly charred on meaty wings.

Finally, my “entrée” ends with a side of Mac -n- Cheese. Along with their pulled pork and G-Funk flavored wings, Nicole says the Mac -n- Cheese is one of their most popular items. Cheesy and creamy with a unique and wonderful peppery taste. Still, I feel like I’m cheating on the slaw—never guessed I could be so smitten with a small bowl of cabbage. For good reason, Midwest Best BBQ has tagged “and Creamery” at the end of its name. For dessert, I order the Coffeehouse Cookies and Cream Sundae with chocolate syrup and allll the toppings. Refreshing after a savory barbecue meal. Pro tip: the ice cream alone is worth the trip.
I celebrate my first Midwest meal with an after-dinner wrap (don’t judge). I order the BBQ & Blue with pork, though I’m wondering if I should suck up the extra $1 for the brisket. The pulled pork is tender, not overwhelmed by blue cheese, and though I’m not a ketchup fan I do love tomatoes—the wrap is infused with cherry tomatoes, which is a wonderful complement.
“We are always exploring ways to grow and expand the Midwest Best BBQ brand,” Nicole says. “Our main focus this year is to expand our catering business, since we’re releasing a new menu soon.”

New menu? As if I thought that server might rip the wrap out of my grip, I quickly slap on so much sweet sauce, it’s streaming down my arm. I have no shame. Nor will you.
