Celebrating the Powerful Ladies Who Make our Community Whole
Dear Long Branch City Lifestyle Readers,
As we welcome the warmth of May, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate the women who make our community truly special. This month, we’re proud to present our Women’s Issue, focusing on the inspiring women who are making a difference and lifting others up every day.

In this issue, you’ll meet Patrice George on page 24, whose dedication to raising awareness about CTE after the loss of her husband is both powerful and heart-wrenching. Her story is a reminder of how we can channel personal pain into meaningful action.
We also get a look at the journey of Gina Mellish, former Miss New Jersey USA, now a pageant coach helping young women build confidence and chase their dreams. Gina’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of believing in yourself.
For me, Mother’s Day is a time to slow down and appreciate the special women in my life. My favorite tradition is having an at home brunch with my mom—it's simple, but it always brings us together to laugh and connect (with our dogs too)!
This month there is no better time than to support women-owned businesses. Whether it’s a local coffee shop, a Pilates studio, or a favorite restaurant, every little bit makes a difference.
Take some time this month to honor the women who inspire you—whether it's through their stories, their businesses, or just a simple conversation over a cup of coffee.
Happy Mothers Day!
With gratitude,
Carly Mac Manus

TRACY SANDLER ON WOMEN IN SPORTS AND CHANGING THE GAME
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACY SANDLER
Tracy Sandler

Tracy Sandler has built a career that seamlessly fuses sports journalism, fandom, and female empowerment. As the founder of Fangirl Sports Network, she has carved out a space in the male-dominated sports industry, proving that women can not only be passionate sports fans but also shape the conversation around the game. While her roots are in Los Angeles and her day-to-day coverage centers on the San Francisco 49ers, her impact extends nationwide—including to the East Coast.
BUILDING A SPORTS NETWORK FOR WOMEN
Sandler, a lifelong sports fan and University of Michigan alum, created Fangirl Sports Network nearly a decade ago with the goal of shifting how sports media speaks to women. "At the time, it felt like female fans were either expected to know nothing or just wear a pink jersey," Sandler recalls. "I love pink and sparkles, but not everyone does. I wanted to create content that truly engaged female fans." Through a mix of game analysis, off-the-field stories, and digital media savvy—including TikTok and meme-driven news—she has built a platform that resonates with a new generation of sports enthusiasts.
SUPER BOWL WEEK
While covering the Super Bowl in New Orleans this year, we had a chance to catch up with Sandler and ask her a few questions that we thought would speak to our female readers. Sandler's presence at Super Bowl LIX was more than just about covering the game—it was a chance to network, engage, and celebrate the evolving landscape of women in sports media. She attended high-profile events, including the Kelce brothers’ party, where Jason Kelce, the heart and soul of the Philadelphia Eagles, made an impression.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Sandler has her eye on several teams, including the Eagles. "The Eagles will continue to be a force to be reckoned with," she predicts. "They have a strong foundation and should remain a major contender in the NFC." Her analysis aligns with the high expectations Philadelphia fans have for their team, especially following seasons of playoff contention.
ADVICE FOR WOMEN CHASING THEIR DREAMS
Sandler’s journey is one of persistence, passion, and adaptability—lessons she hopes will inspire others. "At the end of the day, you just have to start," she advises. "You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has."
“You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has.”
— Tracy Sandler
Beyond Philadelphia, Sandler sees rising threats in the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders, as well as familiar AFC powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. However, she acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the NFL, where injuries and offseason changes can shift the landscape quickly.
As women continue to break barriers in sports media, Sandler stands as proof that determination and vision can turn an idea into a thriving platform. And while she may primarily cover the 49ers, her reach extends far beyond the Bay Area, making an impact on fans from coast to coast—including those donning green in Philly.
With Super Bowl LX set for Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco next year, all eyes will be on how the season unfolds. If Sandler’s predictions hold true, Eagles fans may have plenty to cheer about come February 2026.

Flounder, Flavor, and a Little Facebook Detox
Sautéed Flounder with Pine Nut Butter & Spicy Garlic Spinach
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY METROPOLITAN
SEAFOOD & GOURMET
INGREDIENTS
For the Flounder:
• 4 (6-to-8-ounce) flounder fillets (or substitute with red snapper, grouper, or catfish)
• Salt and freshly ground pepper
• ¼ cup all-purpose flour (for dusting)
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 2 tablespoons butter
• ¼ cup pine nuts (or coarsely chopped walnuts)
• Juice of 1 lemon
• 2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped
For the Sautéed Spicy Garlic Spinach:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
• 6 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced
• 2 teaspoons Bomba (Calabrian chili paste)
• 10 ounces fresh baby spinach
• Zest of 1 lemon, finely grated
• Salt and freshly ground pepper

I’m sorry, did you say you have no time to cook... but just spent the last two hours Facebook stalking your high school classmates? Stop scrolling your phone and let’s get in the kitchen to start living.
This delicious recipe comes from Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet , where fresh, high-quality seafood meets incredible flavors.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cook the Flounder:
• Season the fillets with salt and pepper on both sides, then lightly dredge in flour, shaking off excess. • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, tilting the pan to coat. • Cook fish for about 3 minutes per side, or until it flakes easily. Transfer to a platter and keep warm.
2. Make the Pine Nut Butter:
• Reduce the skillet heat to medium and add butter.
• Once the butter begins to melt, stir in pine nuts. Cook for 30 to 60 seconds, until butter is melted and nuts are lightly toasted (be careful not to burn the butter). • Add lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper. • Spoon the butter and pine nut mixture over the fish fillets and sprinkle with parsley.
3. Prepare the Sautéed Spicy Garlic Spinach:
• Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. • Add garlic and Bomba paste, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant. • Add spinach and toss with tongs until it begins to wilt. • While tossing, add lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Serve & Enjoy:

• Divide the spinach among four plates and serve alongside the flounder. • Savor your meal—oh, and by the way, those high school heartthrobs? Still hot, but now hair-impaired and a little thicker around the middle. A huge thank you to Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet for this incredible recipe. Now, wasn’t that better than doom-scrolling? Enjoy!

FROM OCEANPORT TO THE NATIONAL STAGE, GINA MELLISH’S MISSION IS EMPOWERING WOMEN TO FIND THEIR VOICE—ON AND OFF THE STAGE
Gina Mellish, crowned Miss New Jersey USA in 2020, didn’t have the typical pageant queen upbringing. In fact, she grew up as a self-described tomboy in Oceanport, and had no idea what the world of pageantry even looked like. Fast forward to today, and Mellish is not only a former titleholder but also an inspirational coach who has helped young women across the country achieve their pageant dreams.
In a candid interview, Mellish opened up about her unlikely journey to becoming Miss New Jersey and how she now works fulltime as a coach, using her experiences to guide the next generation of pageant competitors.
FROM TOMBOY TO BEAUTY QUEEN
The spark for Mellish's pageant career came during her time at Red Bank Catholic High School. As a sophomore, she was inspired by her senior volleyball captain, Christina Thompson, who had just won Miss New Jersey Teen USA. “She was so kind, smart, and hardworking. I thought, ‘I want to be like her,’” Mellish recalls.
That admiration led Mellish to her first pageant, where she placed third runner-up. But instead of walking away, she dove deeper, and the following year, she won Miss New Jersey Teen USA. “That’s when my parents became pageant parents,” she laughs, recalling how they got fully involved in the experience.
Mellish competed in Miss Teen USA, made lifelong friends, and, after graduating from Marist College, decided to return to the pageant world. “I thought maybe it would take a few years to win Miss New Jersey USA,” she says. “But I ended up winning on my first try. And I wasn’t even old enough to have a martini to celebrate!"
THE ROAD TO MISS USA AND TOP 10 GLORY
Mellish’s journey took an unexpected turn when the world shut down due to the pandemic in 2020. Crowned Miss New Jersey USA in November 2019, she was ready to compete in Miss USA that following year—but the world had other plans. As the pandemic

Gina Mellish and UmaSofia, Miss Teen USA 2023
forced a postponement of the competition, Mellish had to train in the comfort of her own home.
“I was juggling school, interning at Giorgio Armani, and preparing for Miss USA all at once,” she says. “But when we were sent home, it was a hard time for many, but it gave me the chance to focus.” That focus paid off, as Mellish placed in the top 10 at Miss USA in 2020, a feat she still feels proud of today.
FINDING PURPOSE BEYOND THE GLITZ
Mellish's time as Miss New Jersey USA was about more than just looking pretty in a crown. As she competed at Miss USA, she used her platform to raise awareness around healthy relationships, working closely with the organization One Love. “I had been in an abusive relationship when I was 16, and competing again gave me a chance to speak out and use my voice for something that mattered,” she shares.
Her message resonated deeply with others, as Mellish’s vulnerability and courage in sharing her story helped countless people navigate their own struggles. “I wanted to leave a legacy that wasn’t just about the crown and the glitz,” she notes. “It was about using my story to help others.”
A NEW CHAPTER: COACHING THE NEXT GENERATION
After her reign, Mellish transitioned into coaching, and now she helps young women—both teens and adults—navigate their own pageant journeys. “My biggest job as a coach is to help girls find who they are,” she says. “I want them to feel beautiful, not just in the pageant world, but in their everyday lives.”
She works with women from ages 14 to 35, teaching them everything from interview prep to personal branding. “We talk about current events, styling, walking, and image consulting. But more than anything, I want them to leave with tools they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” she explains.
Mellish has coached multiple pageant queens, including several Miss New Jersey Teen USA winners. “It’s incredible to think that my first national client won Miss Teen USA, and now I’ve had clients go on to win Miss Universe!” she says, looking back on her unexpected success as a coach.
But for Mellish, it’s not about the trophies. It’s about the people. “I’m just the catalyst between them and their dreams. My goal is to help women feel beautiful and empowered, no matter what stage they’re at in life.”
As Mellish reflects on her coaching career, she remains grateful for the opportunities pageantry has given her—and the chance to help others. “I’ve had some amazing moments, like coaching a Miss Teen USA and a Miss Universe,” she says. “But I’d love to have a Miss USA in my future. That’s the last piece of the puzzle for me.”
Above all, Mellish’s message for young girls and women who want to step into the pageant world is simple: take risks and have fun. “If I can do it, you can do it,” she shares with a smile. “Don’t be afraid to fail. You never know what can happen unless you try.”
Whether you’re a young girl dreaming of a crown or a woman looking for confidence and guidance, Gina Mellish is here to help you shine. Follow her on Instagram @theginamellish or visit her website ginamellishconsulting.com for more inspiration.

Turning Pain into Purpose
Patrice George’s Journey to Honor Her Late Husband’s Legacy and Raise Awareness for CTE
Patrice George has built a life defined by unwavering strength, resilience, and a deep love for her family. As a successful broker and real estate professional, as well as a devoted mother of three, George made it her mission to honor her late husband Tommy’s legacy. Through turning her pain into purpose, she found the power to help others.
“There was no other option for me than to persevere,” George says. “Tommy was my greatest cheerleader, and I made it my mission to make him proud.”
Tommy George was a vibrant, charismatic man known for his dynamic personality and smile that could light up any room. A businessman who cherished time with his family, Tommy was also a decorated athlete. He played middle linebacker for Long Branch High School and the University of Maryland before graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in international economics.

After a diagnosis, rapid decline, and an incredibly painful time, Tommy passed away at 54. Tommy made the decision early in his diagnosis to donate his brain to Boston University’s CTE Center for study. Though initially diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, doctors and Tommy suspected chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive head trauma.
With the help of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, the university confirmed Tommy had stage 3 CTE. This diagnosis, while heartbreaking, brought clarity and renewed purpose to George’s life. Though it could not bring Tommy back, she found solace in the mission to raise awareness about CTE. Tommy never wanted anyone to suffer the way he did, without knowing the possibility of it.

Patrice George
CTE is known to cause early-onset dementia and other degenerative brain diseases. Contact sports players and military personnel are most affected. George hopes that through increased awareness and research, doctors will one day be able to diagnose CTE while individuals are still alive, leading to better treatments. She calls it her “long-term mission.”
George stressed that the goal is not to go against the sports so many love but to protect the players as much as possible. “Tommy and Patrice’s children are all athletes, and Tommy comes from a very athletic family, but as a culture, we need more funding, more research, more awareness, and more involvement from parents and coaches,” George shares.

“We have come a long way, but there is still so much work to do. There are more programs to be implemented, and so many leaders are creating a path to minimize CTE. It’s incredible once you see so many passionate doctors, scientists, athletes, coaches, and those families affected, creating a path to end CTE.”
Throughout this journey, George's love for Tommy and her children—Tommy Jr., Holly, and Summer—has remained her guiding force. She continues to live in a way that honors their shared life, drawing strength from her experiences and the community that supported Tommy’s care right to the end. “Our support system was incredible, and it’s a real testament to Tommy and his love for family and friends.”
Tommy and Patrice George

Patrice George
“My gratitude was and is endless,” George notes.
In addition to her advocacy work, George has flourished in real estate, a field she has worked in for nearly two decades. After Tommy became ill, she joined O’Brien Realty and now serves as the broker of record for the company’s Oceanport office.
When asked what fuels her success in real estate, George's answer is simple: “The love of the business and helping people transition to another chapter of their lives. Home should tell the story of who you are and be the most peaceful and happy place on earth. I want that for all my clients.” She believes that investing in real estate is one of the best wealth-building tools available.
George's success is evident in her recent recognition with the prestigious Platinum Award from New Jersey Realtors, one of the highest honors in the industry. She continues to set the bar for excellence. “We live in a beautiful area, and my goal is to keep growing, learning, and assisting buyers and sellers in all areas of real estate,” she says.
The story of George's life and her love for Tommy is deeply intertwined with the Jersey Shore, and especially within Long Branch. Long Branch was one of Tommy’s greatest loves—the town that shaped their family’s story and holds a special place in their hearts. Patrice and Tommy met in Long Branch and purchased their first two homes there. In the summertime, the George Family could usually be found enjoying the day at Monmouth Beach bathing pavilion, followed by a stop at Strollo's Lighthouse and a walk along the boardwalk before heading home.
Even after Tommy’s passing, George and their children continue to drive through Long Branch, reflecting on the area’s transformation—a reminder of Tommy’s enduring presence and love for the community.

The George Family
“We were driving through lower Broadway recently, and my daughter said, ‘The transformation of Long Branch is just astounding. Dad would have made us drive through here every morning after catching a glimpse of the waves along the boardwalk,’” George recalls. “I responded with conviction and a smile, ‘Yes, he would have!’”
At home, George's space reflects her journey and her personality. Despite the pain, her home radiates peace and happiness—filled with cherished memories of Tommy and an atmosphere that reflects her love of life, family, friends, and light within her.
“I will honor Tommy every day of my life,” George says. “I will always be his advocate and set the stage for others in his memory. He deserves that.” “Tommy left me with three beautiful gifts, who he adored, and every time I look in their eyes, Tommy shines through. It is just beautiful to me.”

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART
Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.
As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions
associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.
In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
Florals and Fruit

“Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.”
Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keetp the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Flower Frogs

Hanging Florals
For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between longstemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.
No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.
